Shared Enrichment Programme

INTRODUCTION TO THE SHARED ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME

“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.”

(Henry Ford)

Objectives

To ensure that all Year 13 pupils within the Magherafelt Learning Partnership:are aware of the background and principles of the Shared Enrichment Programme;appreciate the importance of embracing curriculum enrichment opportunities;are aware of the procedures for applying for a particular curriculum enrichment course.

What is the Shared Education ?

Shared Education aims to encourage schools in Northern Ireland to engage in cross-sectoral collaboration as a means of improving the educational and personal development opportunities of young people.

By facilitating the development of collaboration and sharing in education, the programme aims to promote reconciliation in Northern Ireland, a society emerging from conflict and one which remains largely segregated in areas such as housing and education.

Cross-Sectoral Collaboration

What is Cross- Sectoral Collaboration ?

The education system of Northern Ireland may be described as multi-sectoral. In other words, schools identify themselves as belonging to particular sectors of the system. For example, a school might exist within the integrated sector, the grammar sector, the secondary sector, the controlled sector or the maintained sector.

Cross-sectoral collaboration is not just about bringing together people from different denominations but also about encouraging people from different sectors of education to work together.

Reconciliation

Why is there a need for reconciliation in Northern Ireland? The history of conflict and the multi-sectoral education system in Northern Ireland have contributed to social division. As a result, particular prejudices, perceptions and mindsets pervade Northern Ireland society.

Shared Education aims to challenge prejudices, perceptions and mindsets by bringing together people from different religious, cultural and educational backgrounds in the spirit of mutual respect and understanding.

How does the Magherafelt Learning Partnership participate in Shared

Education?

In December 2009, the Magherafelt Learning Partnership (MLP) submitted a successful application to Queen’s University for Sharing Education funding to further develop inter-school collaboration in the Magherafelt area.

Since then almost 1000 Year 13 MLP students have participated in shared enrichment classes

This funding was used to provide all Year 13 pupils within the MLP with access to a common Curriculum Enrichment Programme. The funding has now ceased but the MLP is continuing to fund a Shared Enrichment Programme.

The Increasing Importance of Enrichment

‘Enrichment’ refers to the courses and activities undertaken by pupils who are interested in self-development beyond that which is offered by those subjects selected for curriculum study.

The competition for university places in September 2013 is well documented. Even students with top grades face being rejected by universities. Future applicants should embrace any opportunity to boost their portfolio and enhance their university prospects.

Participation in the Shared Enrichment Programme is one such opportunity for you to enhance your prospects by broadening your experience and should be regarded as a significant aspect of your personal career plan.

What are the benefits of participating in the Shared Enrichment Programme?

Academic BenefitsBroadening of academic portfolio and experience.Strengthening of many aspects of university application e.g. stimulus for discussion at interview, inclusion on Personal Statement, referred to by UCAS referee.Preparation for life at university and in the workplace in terms of interacting with people from different walks of life.Additional qualification gained from those courses which carry external accreditation.

What are the benefits of participating in the Shared Enrichment Programme?

Personal BenefitsAcquisition of transferable skills.Development of new friendships.Opportunity to work and learn alongside people from different school sectors and cultural backgrounds who share similar interests.Demonstration of an ability and willingness to work with people from different backgrounds and the future potential to contribute to the building of a shared society in Northern Ireland.Positive reflection upon the individual showing commitment, a determination to succeed and an interest in continued personal learning and development.

You may choose to pursue a course because it:complements your study of a curriculum subject;is a departure from your curriculum subjects, hence showing breadth of interest and individual roundedness;gives you an insight into a particular career/profession; is simply something which interests you.

What Do I Need to Do?

Study the booklet carefully – some courses are over 8 weeks, some are delivered over one day or several twilight sessions. When you enrol you are committing yourself to being available at that time!

Look at the Overview of Courses section and select those courses which are of interest to you.

Read carefully the Course Information section for those courses which are of interest to you.

If necessary, seek advice regarding your course selection. Before applying for a particular course, check details such as the day and

the time of the course delivery, making sure that there is no clash with any other commitments.

When you have decided upon a course, follow the instructions in the Enrolling for Courses section of the booklet.

Enrolling for a Course

It is very important that you follow the instructions for enrolling on a course carefully and that you submit your course selection by the given deadline.

Although every effort will be made to match pupils to their preferred courses, this cannot be offered as a guarantee.

Social Media

All SEP students are strongly encouraged to ‘like’ mlpenrichment on Facebook or ‘follow’ mlpenrichment on Twitter.

Any students deemed to be misusing this facility will be immediately withdrawn from the Enrichment Programme and will be subject to disciplinary procedures under the MLP E-safety contract.

Your Questions Answered

I can get a bus at 4.45pm but my class does not end until 5.00pm. Can I leave at 4.40pm to get my bus? No. Classes will end at 5.00pm and all participants will be expected to stay until the end of each class. The successful completion of courses will depend on full attendance and participation. Students will not be allowed to leave classes early. You must, therefore, be prepared to get a later bus home or make alternative transport arrangements.

Can I enrol for more than one course?Yes – if numbers permit you may participate in two enrichment courses.

Your Questions Answered

Do all afternoon classes finish at 5.00pm? The majority of classes will finish at 5.00pm. However, some courses may run a little later to ensure that course content is covered. Where this is the case, Course Tutors will advise what time classes will finish.  Do I have to attend my chosen class every week? Yes. Full attendance is a pre-requisite for the successful completion of courses. Only in exceptional circumstances will non-attendance at a class be accepted.

Your Questions Answered

I know of a genuine reason why I will not be able to attend my class on a given day. What should I do and will this mean that I will not successfully complete the course? If you know that you will not be able to make a class for a genuine reason, you must speak to the Co-ordinator in your school in good time and explain your reason to him/her. He/she will be able to advise whether or not the reason you have given is acceptable and if your progress in the course will be affected. He/she will then contact the Co-ordinator in the school delivering the course and ensure that the Course Tutor is aware of your absence.  When you opt to complete a course, you must make sure that the time slot for your chosen course does not clash with any other commitments either in school or outside of school. For example, if you know that you have another commitment such as sports training or a music lesson on a Tuesday evening then you would obviously not choose a course which is being delivered on Tuesday evenings. You should also ensure that medical and dental appointments do not clash with your chosen class.

Your Questions Answered

What is a ‘Home School’ and what is a ‘Host School’?A home school is the school in which a pupil is enrolled. A host school is a school which a pupil may visit to complete part of his/her studies.  What is a ‘Host Pupil’ and what is a ‘Guest Pupil’?The Shared Enrichment Programme will bring about different uniforms in different schools in a context of mutual respect. It will create host pupils in schools and guest pupils in schools. A host pupil is a pupil from a particular school who has chosen to pursue a course in their home school. Host pupils will have a responsibility to welcome and look after pupils from other schools who have chosen to study in their school. Guest pupils are those pupils who have chosen to pursue a course in a school other than their home school. All pupils have a responsibility to respect the culture, ethos and environment of the schools in which they have chosen to pursue a course.
