project: Numbers in Our WorldTime Frame: 3-4 weeks

PROJECT WEEK ONE

Notes

Entry Event: Read aloud the book City by Numbers.

Discussion with students about the numbers they saw and liked.

Make a list with student ideas.Revisit the list with student ideas.

Ask if they think they could find numbers around their school just as in the book.

Take students around the school and have them point out numbers.Administer pre-assesment.

Initiate discussion by posing questions: did you see numbers around our school? Where else have you seen numbers? Do you think we need numbers in our world? Why?

Begin lesson on number recognitionNumber recognition practice: flashcards, songs, videos.

Continue gathering information about what students know about numbers

Introduce the Project to students.

Share the expectations and the different components.

Continue with number lessons: recognition, writing and counting

PROJECT WEEK TWO

Notes: Number recognition, writing and counting is ongoing every day for the duration of the unit.

Begin lessons with iPod use: Teach how to take pictures and video.

Continue with number lessons: recognition, writing and counting

Divide students into groups. Guide them in deciding the places they should visit to look for numbers around the school.

Visit the library, office, classrooms, playgrounds, etc. Students practice taking video and pictures.Introduce the Learning Logs.

Meet in small groups with each group and discuss the evidence they collected.

Adjust lessons to meet group/student needs.Have a whole group discussion on the types of questions they would like to ask potential people they will be interviewing about how they use numbers. (example: librarian, principal, teachers, custodian, office manager)

PROJECT WEEK THREE

Notes: Number recognition, writing and counting is ongoing every day for the duration of the unit.

Each group is now assigned a school area and a person to interview to gather information about how they use numbers.

Teacher meets with students to decide who will take video, pictures, ask the questions, and make sketches

Field Work: Students conduct their investigation around their assigned school area. Each group will conduct an interview, take video, pictures and take necessary notes (drawings) to include in their final project.Meet with students in small groups to discuss their findings and help them adjust their projects. Review the evidence gathered and determine if they are ready to begin the final product.Whole group discussion and sharing by each group about the evidence they have gathered so far. Students have an opportunity to ask and answer questions.Share rubric about the iMovie project and presentation.

Begin whole group iMovie lesson.

PROJECT WEEK FOUR

Notes: Number recognition, writing and counting is ongoing every day for the duration of the unit.

Continue with iMovie lessons.

Meet with each group in small groups to help with any difficulties they might encounter.Begin meeting with each group to help them develop their iMovie videos.Continue developing and polishing the iMovie videos.Practice video presentations and answering questionsBegin presentations.

Presentations may spill into the fifth week depending on how students do in developing their final product and presentation practice.
