.sabías que en julio...?… el día 14 de 1789, tubo lugar en París la Toma de la Bastilla, dando paso a la Revolución Francesa? La Bastilla era una vieja fortaleza

que Luis XIV había convertido en prisión, donde se detenía a los opositores del régimen monárquico y además se almacenaban armas y

grano. El pueblo se sublevó contra el poder —debido al hambre ocasionada por el fracaso de la cosecha del año anterior y al aumento

de tributos— y decidió tomar la Bastilla, liberando a 7 prisioneros y matando al gobernador, el marqués Bernard-René Jordan de Launay.

Se construía así el símbolo de los revolucionarios contra el despótico poder real. A partir de entonces, cundió la agitación social por toda

Francia, atacándose propiedades privadas, a cobradores de impuestos y a latifundistas, no limitándose, por lo tanto, a la lucha contra la

Corona.

The Bastille was an old fortress that Louis XIV turned into prison to detain those who were against the monarchy and also to keep

weapons and grain? The people rose up against power —due to the hunger caused by the crop failure the year before and the

rise of taxes— and decided to storm the Bastille, releasing 7 prisoners and killing the governor, the marquis Bernard-René Jordan

de Launay. Thus was created the symbol of revolutionaries against the despotic royal power. From then onwards, the social state

of unrest spread all over France, attacking private properties, tax collectors and landowners, becoming much more than just a fight

Original del África oriental y meridional, el Aloe Vera Barba-

densis Miller es una Liliácea de la familia de la cebolla, co-

nocida también como «Lirio del desierto». De hojas largas y

suculentas, de unos 50cm. de largo, 10 de ancho y 4 de gro-

sor, y dispuestas en forma de rosetas, esta planta ha sido con-

siderada «milagrosa» prácticamente desde los orígenes de

la humanidad. Sus propiedades curativas han sido probadas

por infinidad de culturas: mayas, griegos, romanos, hebreos,

asirios, árabes, chinos, egipcios…, estos últimos refiriéndose

a ella, en la antigüedad, como la planta de la inmortalidad

—quizás por sus características sanadoras—, que incluían

entre los regalos funerarios enterrados con los faraones.

Existen documentos históricos que comentan sus virtudes

medicinales y cosméticas. Se dice que Alejandro Magno

conquistó la isla Socotora (sur de Arabia) por la cantidad

de aloes que poseía (para sanar a sus tropas), y que Cleo-

patra lo usaba diariamente para sus cuidados corporales.

En España el aloe fue un elemento esencial en la medicina

popular, hasta que el empleo generalizado de la medicina

moderna lo relegó al olvido, junto a la mayoría de las plan-

tas medicinales.

Durante la II Guerra Mundial se redescubrió su valor tera-

péutico. Las quemaduras causadas en las poblaciones de

Hiroshima y Nagasaki —por las explosiones atómicas— se

curaron más rápidamente con el aloe y en muchos casos

sin dejar señales ni cicatrices.

Sus características como regenerador celular y otras parti-

cularidades medicinales, ha despertado el interés de mu-

chos países para su estudio y su aprovechamiento.

En Medicina se utiliza el jugo de sus hojas cuajado en una

masa sólida de color muy oscuro, y muy amarga, llamada

acíbar. Las formas más comunes de empleo son su uso

externo, mediante geles y cremas, y la administración vía

oral normalmente en forma de jarabes o zumo.

Numerosos estudios han demostrado que el aloe tiene po-

der anti-inflamatorio y analgésico (estimula la producción

de endorfinas, que calman el dolor), además de activar y

fortificar las células epiteliales, lo que lo hace de mucha

utilidad en las úlceras gástricas y estomacales.

Proporciona una profunda limpieza de la piel ya que eli-

mina bacterias y depósitos grasos y, gracias a su poder

regenerador (plantas de más de 3 años), evita la aparición

de arrugas y reduce la medida de los poros abiertos (en

parte también gracias a la cantidad de vitaminas que po-

see; es de las pocas especies que contiene vitamina B12,

además de vitamina A, B1, B2, B6, y C). Cura las heridas

necrosantes, como las quemaduras (también las solares),

regenerando los tejidos y cicatrizándolos, restaurando a su

vez la sensibilidad del área afectada.

Elimina los venenos y desechos de las células, reestructura y

revitaliza la médula ósea, reactiva el sistema inmunológico (in-

cluso acotando la infección del VIH y estimulando la inmuno-

respuesta contra el cáncer). El gel obtenido del aloe produce

seis agentes antisépticos de elevada actividad antimicrobiana,

además de ser anticoagulante y astringente; aunque consumi-

do en grandes cantidades es un perfecto laxante natural.

El Aloe Vera es una especie susceptible de adaptarse y ser

propagada en las zonas áridas y semiáridas. El terreno tiene

que ser arenoso, aunque no es una condición imprescindible,

ya que también crece en óptimas condiciones en tierras vol-

cánicas, como es el caso de las Islas Canarias. Fuerteventura

es la isla donde la planta desarrolla sus máximas propiedades,

gracias a su tierra, su climatología especialmente seca y sus

vientos constantes que dejan una atmósfera limpia.

CURIOSIDADES

— Se dice que tomó el nombre científico Aloe Barbaden-sis porque los Franciscanos españoles, al llegar a tierras americanas, llevaron la planta a las Barbados, donde se desarrolló en un clima que le resultó muy favorable.

— En la cultura Maya había emisarios o carteros que llevaban en largos trayectos las noticias de una tribu a otra, uniendo Améri-ca Central con América del Sur. Cargaban esta receta (aloe con cachaça) como único paliativo para combatir envenenamientos, picaduras de insectos, arañas, mordeduras de serpientes y alimañas, y mantenían sus energías masticando coca.

— La NASA lo utiliza porque absorbe el 90% de la toxicidad de sustancias como: el PVC, la fibra de vidrio, los barnices, las pinturas, las radiaciones de los ordenadores, los televiso-res y demás aparatos electrónicos.

— El acíbar no debe darse nunca a las mujeres durante la mens-truación y el embarazo, ni tampoco cuantos se padecen hemorroides sanguinolentas. Tampoco se debe administrar a niños menores de 6 años. Ocasiona una notable pérdida de potasio a nivel intestinal, por lo que los enfermos cardíacos o renales deberán utilizarlo con precaución.

— El zumo, diluido en agua a partes iguales y usado para hacer gárgaras, actúa eficazmente contra los dolores dentales y de las encías, neuralgias, aftas, laringitis, disfonía, amigdalitis, anginas, placas y cualquier afección bucal o faríngea.

— Para prevenir las enfermedades gastrointestinales y del cáncer, se toma una cucharada de jugo de aloe vera por la mañana.

— La aloína revitaliza el cabello tornándolo más flexible, reluciente, dócil y resistente.

— En casos de quemaduras, se puede preparar un ungüento de aloe con base de aceite. El aloe, de hecho, es nota-blemente astringente, por lo cual el aceite evitará que se reseque demasiado la piel.

Originated in oriental and southern Africa, The Aloe Vera

(Barbadensin Miller) is a Lilac from the onion family, also

known as «desert lily». Juicy long leaves (50cm long, 10cm

wide and 4cm thick) in the shape of a rosette this plant

has always been considered as miraculous from the origins

of humanity. Its healing properties have been proved by

thousands of cultures: Mayan, Greek, Roman, Hebrew,

Assyrian, Chinese, Egyptian… , the latter referring to it,

in the old times, as the plant of immortality —maybe

because of its healing properties— being included among

the funerary gifts buried with pharaohs.

There are historic records that comment on its healing and

cosmetic powers. It’s said that Alexander the Great conquered

the island of Socotora (in the south of Arabia) because

o the quantity of Aloes it contained (to heal his troops),

and that Cleopatra used it every day for her body care.

The Aloe was an essential element in popular medicine in

Spain, until the generalized use of modern medicine relegated

it into oblivion, together with most healing plants.

During WWII, its therapeutic properties were rediscovered.

The burns caused in the populations of Hiroshima and

Nagasaki — due to atomic explosions — healed up more

quickly with aloe and in many cases leaving no signs or scars.

Its properties as a cellular restorer and other healing

properties have awakened the interest of a lot of countries

in studying and taking advantage of it.

The juice of its leaves is used in medicine, thickened into a very

dark bitter and solid dough called bitter aloes. It is used mainly

in the shape of gel or cream, or orally as juice or syrup.

— It’s said to have taken the scientific name Aloe Barbadensis because the Spanish Franciscans, getting to American lands, took this plant to the Barbados Island, where this plant developed under a weather that proved to be very favourable for it.

— In the Mayan culture there were six emissaries or postmen who carried, during long trips, news from one tribe to another, joining Central and South America. They carried A recipe with them, aloe with «cachaça», as the only palliative against poisoning, insect bites, spiders, snake bites, and vermin. They kept their energies by chewing coke.

— The NASA uses it because it absorbs the 90% of the toxicity from substances like: the PVC, the fibreglass, varnish, paint, computer radiations, TVs, and the rest of electronic devices.

— The bitter aloe should never be administrated to women during menstruation and pregnancy, neither to people suffering from bleeding haemorrhoids. It can’t be administrated to children under six either. It causes a noticeable loss of potassium in the bowels, so heart and kidney patients must use it with caution.

— Its juice, diluted in water (50% of each) and used to gargle with it provides a quick relief for tooth and gum ache, neuralgia, thrush, laryngitis, dysphonia, tonsillitis, throat infections, plaques and any other oral or pharynx conditions.

— In order to prevent gastrointestinal diseases and cancer, a spoonful of aloe is taken in the morning. Aloin revitalizes hair, turning it more flexible, bright, manageable and strong.

— In case of burns, an ointment can be prepared with an oily basis. The aloe, in fact, is considerably astringent, so the oil will prevent the skin from becoming too dry.

CURIOSITIES

Several studies have proven that the aloe has anti-

inflammatory and analgesic properties (it stimulates the

production of endorphins, which relieve the pain), in

addition to activating and strengthening the epithelial cells,

which makes it very useful for gastric and stomach ulcers.

It provides a deep skin cleansing getting rid of bacteria

and fatty deposits and, thanks to its restorer properties

(older than three-year-old plants), it avoids the appearance

of wrinkles and reduces the opened pores (partly due to

the vitamins it has; it’s one of the few species that contains

vitamin B12, in addition to vitamin A, B1, B2, B6 and C). It

heals necrotizing injuries, like burns (also the solar ones),

restoring tissues and cicatrizing them, apart from restoring

the sensitivity of the affected area.

It also gets rids of poisons and cell waste, restructures

and revitalizes the bone marrow, reactivates the immune

system (even diminishing the risk of infection by the VIH

and stimulating the immune answer against cancer). The

gel obtained from the aloe produces six antiseptic agents

with a high level of antimicrobial activity, in addition to

being anticoagulant and astringent; although consumed

in big quantities it can be a perfect natural laxative.

The Aloe Vera is a species capable of adapting and growning

in arid and semi-arid areas. The soil must be sandy, although

this isn’t an indispensable condition, as it can also grow in

volcanic soils under optimum conditions, such is the case

of the Canary Islands. Fuerteventura is the island where this

plant develops its best properties, thanks to its soil, its dry

weather and constant wind which cleans the atmosphere.

Este simpático canario se crió en Pozo Izquierdo, primero con

un trozo de corcho y luego con media tabla de windsurf bajo

el brazo. Se pasaba las horas sumergido en el océano ceban-

do las olas, es decir, corriendo las espumas con cualquier cosa

que flotase, hasta que un buen día cayó en sus manos un

bodyboard y empezó a tomarse esta afición un poco más en

serio. Con 15 años llegó la primera tabla de surf y con ella las

primeras reparaciones que se hacía él mismo. Eran muchos

baños y también muchos toques con que practicar el arte de

la resina, y como se le daba bien decidió montar un taller de

arreglos para tablas en la parte de atrás de la casa de sus pa-

dres. Así fue pasando el tiempo entre las clases, el taller, el surf

y un viento que nunca paraba. Un viento que venía en mayo y

no se marchaba hasta septiembre; podías esperar todo lo que

quisieses, pero siempre iba a estar ahí. Desesperado de espe-

rar una tarde, cuando tenía 18 años, mientras miraba cómo

las gemelas se caían una y otra vez intentando levantar por

primera vez una vela, decidió iniciarse en el wind.

Trabajaba en el taller por las mañanas e iba a la universidad

con un amigo por las tardes, pero con 21 años se sacó el car-

net y con la independencia que le dio comprarse un coche

empezó el dilema: clase de geografía o baño en La Cicer;

«Me gusta esta isla porque aquí se está un poco más alejado de la industria del surf».«I like this island because here you are a bit further from the surf industry».

poco a poco la segunda opción era la que más se repetía

y los estudios empezaron a empeorar, así que no tuvo más

remedio que hacerse profesional del mundo acuático.

Él era su propio sponsor, el taller de reparaciones sólo

abría de plato a medio metro, ya que a partir de ahí sur-

feaba todo lo que podía, tanto con wind como con tabla,

una vida relajada y sin mucho estrés.

Pero continuamente, a su cabeza llegaban recuerdos de

Fuerteventura. De pequeño venía a veranear con sus pa-

dres al sur de esta isla y, en un principio, no le gustaba

mucho porque no veía olas, sólo un viento continuo. Pero

un día, mientras veraneaban en el sur, sus padres decidie-

ron ir a Lanzarote de visita y se lo llevaron con él. Su con-

cepto de Fuerteventura cambió inmediatamente cuando

vio Corralejo en un día clásico de olas. Y a partir de ahí

empezó a venir con amigos, desde Gran Canaria, a acam-

par días y días en Esquinzo, sin salir prácticamente del

agua. Cada vez le gustaba más la tranquilidad de la Isla,

los espacios vírgenes y esos lugares sin luz que escasean

en su Gran Canaria natal —también aquí se está un poco

más lejos de la presión de la industria del surf, que es lo

que menos le gusta de este deporte—. Todos estos facto-

This nice Canarian boy was brought up in Pozo Izquierdo,

surrounded by a piece of cork and, then, by half a surf

board under his arms. He spent his time chasing the waves

with anything that could float until one day he found

a bodyboard and he started to take this hobby more

seriously. When he was fifteen he had his first surfboard

and then he learnt to repair it himself. As he spent so long

in the water he had great opportunities to practice the art

of repairing boards with resin, and as he realized he was

good at it he decided to set up a workshop to repair boards

at the rear part of his parents’. So he spent his time among

lessons, the workshop, practising surf and a wind that

would never stop, a wind that would come in May and

would not leave until September; you could wait as long

as you wished but it would always be there. Being 18, one

afternoon, hopelessly waiting, as he was watching how

the twins were falling again and again, trying to raise a sail

for the first time he decided to start out in windsurf.

He was working in the workshop in the mornings, and he

went to university with a friend in the afternoon, but at the

age of 21 he got his driving license and the independence that

meant buying a car led to his dilemma: «Geography lesson or

sailing in La Cicer», and little by little the second option gained

ground and he studies started to get worse, so he had no other

option but to devote professionally to the world of water sports.

He was his own sponsor, the repair workshop only opened

when there were no waves or when they were very small.

From half a metre onwards he spent the day practising

surf and wind, a relaxed life, not really stressing.

But memories of Fuerteventura came continuously to his

mind. When he was a child he used to come to the South

of the island with his parents to spend the summer. At the

beginning he didn’t like it that much because he could see no

waves, just a continuous wind. But one day, while they were

spending their holidays in the South, his parents decided

to go to Lanzarote and took him with them. His view of

Fuerteventura changed immediately as he saw a classic day

of waves in Corralejo. From then onwards he began to come

with some friends from Gran Canaria, camping in Esquinzo

for several days, spending almost the whole day in the water.

He liked it more and more every day. He liked the quietness

in this island more and more, the virgin spots and those dark

places that are missing in his native Gran Canaria —here you

are also a bit farther from the pressure of the surf industry,

which is what he likes least about this sport—. All these «Cuando era pequeño mi abuelo me decía que cuando llegase a Fuerte-ventura tuviese cuidado de no perderme en el bosque».

factors led him to leave Pozo nine years ago and come to live

in Fuerteventura: first in Puerto Lajas, then in Corralejo and

finally in El Cotillo, where you can enjoy surf as well as wind,

and more recently, kite.

What he finds it most important in a swim is to find a

good atmosphere in the water, to be able to enjoy it with

friends, no matter what the conditions are, and although

he is not a surfer of big waves he likes masterful swims,

and he stands out because of the quietness with which he

faces the most hollow sections of the waves, getting inside

deep tubes as soon as he has the chance to do so. His style

is a mixture of fluency, verticality, and aggressiveness quite

compensated and with a certain dose of acrobatics.

While practising wind he likes strong and constant wind,

one foot left waves, but these conditions are scarce

(moreover to keep a wind equipment a day is complicated:

two boards, three sails…) and although you find a lot of

wind in Fuerteventura it’s not very strong, so you can use

it best for kite, where he feels really great catching waves

and he is improving quickly.

When there is neither wind nor waves you can find him

climbing —another one of his passions— any stones in

Fuerteventura: primero a Puerto Lajas, luego a Corralejo

y finalmente a El Cotillo, donde puede disfrutar tanto del

surf como del wind y, más recientemente, del kite.

Para él lo más importante de un baño es que haya buen

rollo en el agua y poder disfrutar con los amigos, inde-

pendientemente de las condiciones y, aunque no es un

surfista de olas grandes, sí le gustan los baños potentes

y destaca por la tranquilidad con la que encara las sec-

ciones más huecas de las olas, metiéndose en profun-

dos tubos en cuanto tiene la más mínima ocasión. Su

surf es una mezcla de fluidez, verticalidad y agresividad

bastante compensada y adornada por cierta dosis de

acrobacia.

Con el wind le gusta el viento fuerte y constante, con

olas de izquierda de un palo; pero estas condiciones esca-

sean (además mantener un equipo de wind al día es com-

plicado: 2 tablas, 3 velas....) y aunque en Fuerteventura

hay mucho viento no es muy fuerte, por lo que se puede

aprovechar más con el kite, con el que se siente muy bien

cogiendo olas y está evolucionando rápidamente.

Cuando no hay viento ni olas te lo puedes encontrar practi-

cando escalada —otra de sus pasiones— en cualquier piedra

de la isla; o si tienes mala suerte escucharlo aporreando su

timple.

De Fuerteventura le gusta casi todo, menos cuando va

con su furgoneta y escucha por la radio a los politiqui-

llos locales soltar sus programas electorales: a unos que

quieren agujerear Tindaya, otros que van a hacer un

puente hasta Lanzarote, que si puertos deportivos en

cada esquina.... «parece que jugasen a ver quién propo-

ne una estupidez más grande». Le dan ganas de coger

la furgo y estrellarse en la primera curva al recordar los

desastres que han pasado en su isla y en otras del ar-

chipiélago.

Mientras hablábamos, estaba haciendo las maletas para

irse a Cantabria, donde pasará el verano dando clases

para la Solar Surf School de Suances, aprovechando el

glassy de la península, mientras se da cabezazos por todo

el vientazo que se va perder este año.

El Enano, el Bolaño, el de Jilti o simplemente José, uno de

los surfistas más queridos y respetados del norte de Fuer-

teventura, todo un ejemplo de saber estar en el agua y

un espectáculo del wind, surf o cualquier cosa que sirva

para deslizarse o navegar. Gracias por enseñarnos que lo

importante es disfrutar, en armonía, del océano y demás

compañeros de baño (léase peje verdes, marrajos, viejas,

cuchilleros, marikiters, bugueros o longboarders), indepen-

dientemente de la disciplina y las condiciones que encon-

tremos.

Buena suerte y este verano mándanos un poquito del

glass que te vas a encontrar, que nosotros te guardare-

mos un poco de viento. Un abrazo y hasta pronto.

He likes almost everything in Fuerteventura, except when

he is driving his van and he listens to local politicians in

the radio talking about their election manifestoes: some of

them want to pierce Tindaya; some others want to build a

bridge to Lanzarote and marinas everywhere... «it seems as

though they were playing to «who makes the most stupid

proposal». He feels like crashing with his van in the first

bend when he remembers the disasters that have taken

place in his island and some others in the archipelago.

While we were talking he was packing to go to Cantabria,

where he will spend the summer teaching in «La Solar Surf

School» in Suances, taking advantage of the glassy sea in the

peninsula, but at the same time feeling like kicking himself

when he thinks of the wind he will miss so much this year.

El Enano, el Bolaño, el de Jilti or just José, is one of the most

beloved and respected surfers in the north of Fuerteventura,

an example of how to behave in the water and a show in

wind , surf or any other sport where you can sail into the

water. Thanks for teaching us that the most important thing

is to enjoy the sea and swim friends in harmony (that’s to say,

peje verdes, marrajos, viejas, cuchilleros as well as marikiters,

bodyboarders and longboarders), independently from the

conditions and the badly behaved people we may meet.

Good luck this summer, send us a little bit of the glass

you’ll find, and we’ll keep some wind for you.

Después de arrastrar durante un tiempo el peso de la CRISIS, por fin se comienza a desenmascarar

el término, y muchos nos damos cuenta de que tal crisis no es más que la acción desencadenada

de un capitalismo descarnado; un capitalismo que crea discusión en casi todas las casas a la hora

de la comida: ¿quién no habló alguna vez de la falta de empleo y las condiciones precarias del

mismo?, ¿y de los sueldazos y los excesos de los políticos?, ¿qué joven no se ha resignado a la idea

de no poder tener una vivienda digna?, ¿quién no ha pensado en alguna ocasión que el pastel

está mal repartido?, ¿a quién no le ha dolido, de alguna manera, ser tratado como un número de

cuenta corriente por estas entidades financieras que nos acosan?, ¿quién no ha pensado, aunque

sea de pasada, el mal que se le está haciendo a la Madre Tierra, siempre a costa del dinero?,

¿quién no ha criticado alguna vez la falta de igualdad y solidaridad?, ¿quién no se ha quejado por

la dificultad del libre acceso a la cultura?, ¿quién no ha discutido, en más de una ocasión, sobre la

precariedad en la sanidad?, ¿y sobre el exceso de gasto público con fines militares?, ¿y respecto a

la manipulación de la información por parte de los medios de comunicación?… ¿Quién no se ha

sentido, de algún modo, eslabón de una sociedad insatisfecha?

El movimiento 15M nace para hacer frente a todo lo que nos hace estar indignados; para ponerle

freno a los rasgos negativos del ser humano sobre los que se ha levantado este sistema —la avari-

cia, la competitividad, el egoísmo, el miedo…— en favor de la ética y la humanidad.

Y este movimiento ahora remueve también las entrañas de Fuerteventura; esta isla tranquila que poco

a poco va despertando para formar parte del todo. La pasada manifestación del 19J —en contra del

Pacto del Euro— reunió a más de 500 personas por las calles de Puerto del Rosario, gritando que «no

somos mercancía en manos de banqueros; somos personas que queremos tomar un rumbo nuevo,

un rumbo más humano». Y, tras el éxito de la manifestación, el movimiento continúa. Aunque se

levante el campamento —organizado en la Plaza de la Iglesia desde el 27 de mayo—, las asambleas y

las comisiones seguirán funcionando; es más, se irán extendiendo hacia los barrios y los pueblos, para

hacer partícipes cada vez a más personas; transmitiendo la ideología de un movimiento que está vivo,

que late, que es grande y que se ha iniciado el camino hacia un cambio necesario e inevitable.

After having been carrying the weight of this CRISIS for so long, this term begins to get unmasked at

last and many of us have realised that such a crisis is not but the consequence of bare capitalism. A

capitalism that raises discussions at lunch time in every single home: Who has never spoken about the

lack of jobs or about their precariousness? And what about the excessive salaries that politicians earn?

Who is the youngster who hasn’t had to put up with the fact of not having a decent home? who

hasn’t ever thought that this «cake» is not being divided in a fair way? Who hasn’t felt hurt when they

have been treated as a bank account by those financial institutions that don’t stop hounding us? Who

has never thought, even if not very deeply, how much our mother Earth is being hurt by money? Who

has never criticised the missing equality and solidarity? Who has never complained about how difficult

it is to have free access to culture? Who has never discussed about the public health precariousness?

And what about public expenses with military aims? And about the manipulation of information by

the mass media?.... Who has never felt as a chain link in a dissatisfied society?

The uprising 15M was born to face up what makes us feel outraged, to stop the negative

features of the human being on which this system set up —greed, competitiveness, selfishness,

fear…— in favour of ethics and humanity.

And this movement is now stirring up the entrails of Fuerteventura; this quiet island is little by

little awakening to take part in the whole. The last demonstration on the 19J —against the Euro

agreement— gathered more than 500 people in the streets of Puerto del Rosario, shouting « we

aren’t just freight in the hands of bankers; we are people who want to take a new direction, a more

human one». And after the success of this demonstration, the uprising goes on. Although the camp

settled on the 27th May in Plaza de la Iglesia has been raised, meetings and committees will keep

working; in fact, they will spread to neighbourhoods and villages to make more people take part in

this uprising; we will keep spreading the ideology of an uprising that is alive, is beating, is big and

has started a path towards a necessary and unavoidable change.

El pozo es fuente de vida. Mi padre dice que sin él ningu-no de nosotros existiría. El viejo de la montaña lo cons-truyó cuando el mundo se vació. En verano, cuando el agua se esconde, montamos a camello mi mamá y yo, y nos vamos antes de que se levante el sol, lejos, lejos. Vamos allá, por el Malpaís, al río. El río es pequeño pero canta. A mí me gusta mucho. En la playa, cerquita, hay unas tablas flotantes y a veces, al regresar, vamos a ju-gar en las olas. Mi mamá dice que en el tiempo de las maravillas mucha gente hacía así, en vez de trabajar el campo. Y viajaban por el aire como aves, desde todas partes del mundo, porque todo era posible. Yo lo he vis-to con mis propios ojos, en la casa del viejo. Tiene una caja mágica que come la luz del sol. Una vez por sema-na nos invita a todos los niños del pueblo y sentados en la oscuridad esperamos a que encienda la caja mágica. De pronto, se ilumina con los infinitos prodigios de un mundo que sólo él conoció. Pienso que sin eso, nadie creería sus historias. Mi padre dice que es un «ingenie-ro» y mi madre dice que es un loco. Yo le pregunté al viejo si todos lo ingenieros son locos y se rió, afirmando que sí, «los verdaderos son todos locos».Tiene doscientos años. Dice que no se puede morir hasta que termine de escribir todo lo que sabe, para que no se pierda por siempre la «ciencia». Se le cae la

piel de los huesos, y cuando sueña, parece muerto. Pero de pronto abre sus ojos, y lucen con el color del campo después de la lluvia, aunque no vean nada. Es porque ya han visto demasiado, durante la gue-rra era todo muy feo, pero de esas cosas, de las ceni-zas, no se habla frente a los niños.El viejo nos cuenta que, cuando era joven, todo lo que se puede imaginar era posible y además fácil. El agua fluía a todas las casas; la luz llegaba al presionar un botón; la comida no había que sacarla a mano de la tierra porque llegaba sola, ya lista para comer. Pero todas las maravillas dependían de un agua negra, viscosa, oculta en las entrañas de la tierra. La gente se puso ávida de ese agua y le robaron a la tierra más y más, y empezaron a pelearse y no se dieron cuen-ta de lo que habían hecho, hasta que la descuidada tierra tomó su venganza. El viejo dice que la Isla nos protegió y que nuestro anciano conocimiento de la tierra nos salvó. Dice que sólo recordando se aprende y que, si construimos para los hijos de nuestros hijos, llegaremos a un tiempo aún más maravilloso, donde no se pierdan las almas. Yo sé que no olvidaré nada, porque creo en el viejo de la montaña.

On August 1st, Le Caravan Guitars will leave from Fuerteventura towards Barcelona with six musicians. Antes de comprar o adoptar un perro que permanecerá con nosotros aproximada-mente unos 10 años, deberíamos tener en cuenta una serie de factores:

Tiempo y dedicación. Un perro requiere un mínimo de dos paseos diarios y del ejercicio necesario según su tamaño y constitución. Además, también hay que darle una educación básica. Ningún perro es feliz pasando la mayor parte del día sólo.Gastos económicos. No se trata únicamente de gastarse el dinero en comprar un perro, sino de mantenerlo durante toda su vida. Deberemos contar con suficientes ingresos para afrontar los gastos veterinarios (vacunas, microchip, desparasitación, posibles enfermedades...) y aquellos correspondientes a la alimentación, entre otros.Aprobación por parte de todos los miembros de la familia. La adquisición del perro debe ser aprobada por todos los integrantes de la familia, también hay que com-probar con anterioridad que ningún miembro sea alérgico al pelo del animal.Períodos vacacionales. Hay que tener presente que no podremos llevarnos al perro a todos los sitios donde queramos ir. Por lo tanto, tendremos que contar con los posibles gastos adicionales en residencias caninas o cuidadores.Dimensiones de la vivienda y clima. El tamaño de la raza a elegir deberá depender de las dimensiones que tenga su casa. Si además vive en una zona calurosa, evite comprar razas de origen nórdico, de lo contrario, el animal sufrirá mucho y no se adaptará bien a las condiciones climáticas.Paciencia. Hasta que el cachorro no aprenda, orinará y defecará dentro de casa, romperá cosas, ensuciará y llorará. Si no nos vemos capaces de afrontar estas situa-ciones durante una temporada, mejor que no compremos un cachorro. Si perdemos la paciencia, gritamos y reñimos al animal constantemente, éste no aprenderá nada y la convivencia por ambas partes será un martirio.Carácter de cada raza. Debemos tener en cuenta que las perreras municipales o los centros de acogida tam-bién disponen de cachorros abandonados y de perros adultos que buscan un hogar.

It’s important to get information about every breed’s character, as well as about their compatibility with children or other pets. For example, a German shepherd dog will get really bored if its owners like to spend the weekend quietly at home, and it’ll run the risk of suffering different behavioural and health problems.

We must also bear in mind that dog pounds also have abandoned puppies and adult dogs that are looking for a home.

LA FERTILIDAD DEL SUELO y el ABONADO DEL SUELO y el ABONADO

La palabra fertilidad significa «capacidad de dar vida». Las plantas toman del suelo 15 elementos principales para su nutrición

(N, P, K, Ca, S, Mg, B, Cl, Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Mb, Na y Al). Si alguno de estos elementos no está en el suelo la planta no puede

crecer, por tanto es importantísimo realizar un buen abonado para lograr y mantener un suelo nutrido y alimentar a la vez a la

microfauna de bacterias, hongos, lombrices… que son los verdaderos trabajadores del suelo, ya que se encargan de disgregar

los compuestos orgánicos y minerales y convertirlos en asimilables por las raíces.

Para lograr una fertilización natural de los cultivos, que no suponga un problema medioambiental ni de salud huma-na, se pueden usar entre otros:

—Estiércol (excrementos de animales): se encargan de ace-lerar y mejorar la reintroducción de la materia orgánica en el ciclo de alimentación de las plantas; puede ser de oveja, cabra, vaca, cerdo, conejo, caballo… Hay que tener cuidado con los que provienen de animales de la agricul-tura intensiva ya que si la alimentación de estos animales no es adecuada mucho menos lo serán sus deposiciones. Otros tipos son: el guano (de aves marinas), gallinaza (de gallinas), palomina o excremento de murciélago. Contie-nen gran cantidad de nutrientes para las plantas.

—Abonos verdes: son los cultivos que se siembran para mejorar el suelo, por ejemplo de leguminosas (fijan el nitrógeno, nutren la tierra, protegen contra la erosión, evitan la evaporación, controlan el crecimiento de la maleza y además se pueden utilizar como alimento para animales y para el hombre).

—Turba: es la primera etapa del proceso por el que la ve-getación entra en estado de putrefacción y se transfor-

ma en carbón mineral. Es buena para los suelos por su capacidad de retención de humedad (evitando la lixivia-ción, que es el lavado de la tierra por efecto de la lluvia o del riego, perdiendo gran cantidad de nutrientes).

—Compost: es un material obtenido a partir de restos vegetales y otras materias orgánicas sometidas a un proceso de compostaje o fermentación controlada. Se conoce como la base de la correcta fertilización en agricultura ecológica. Existen muchas clases y muchas formas de elaborarlo.

—Lombricompost: las lombrices, en el suelo agrícola, siempre están trabajando. Mediante su digestión trans-forman gran cantidad de materia orgánica en humus y nutrientes asimilables para las plantas. Remueven la tierra y favorecen la ventilación de las raíces.

—Abonos líquidos: •Orina: ya sea humana o de animales, tiene un alto

contenido de nitrógeno y potasio (6l.orina = 1kg. de nitrógeno). Es preferible dejarla reposar por tres sema-nas y luego diluir (1:10 de agua).

•Estiércol líquido: estiércol diluido en agua, reposado ycolado.

We must be careful with dung coming from intensive agriculture animals, as if those animals haven’t been properly fed then the quality of their depositions will not be good either. Other kinds

— Enmiendas orgánicas: algas marinas (gran cantidad de potasio y oligoelementos sanos para el huerto, crean suelos esponjosos y aireados, que retienen bien la hu-medad); harina de sangre, de cuernos, de huesos, de plumas y de pescado (gran aporte de nutrientes, aun-que se ha tendido a rechazar los procedentes de la ga-nadería intensiva, por problemas como los derivados de las «vacas locas»); cenizas (ricas en potasio, recomenda-bles en pequeñas cantidades).

— Enmiendas minerales: fuentes inorgánicas que nos pue-den proporcionar sustancias ricas en minerales y nu-trientes para las plantas, una vez trituradas y molidas, o calcinadas (polvo de roca caliza, yeso, minerales de sílice…). No son solubles en agua ni directamente asimi-lables por las plantas, así que su aplicación se realizará con varios meses de antelación al cultivo.

En el próximo número detallaremos cómo se fabrica un compostador y hablaremos con más detenimiento de los beneficios del compost como abono orgánico.

farming llLos abonos químicos —a parte de problemas que ya hemos tratado en artículos anteriores, relacionados con la salud de las plantas y de los seres humanos— pueden provocar gra-ves problemas en los suelos, como:Contaminación por nitratos: las plantas sólo aprovechan el 50% del nitrógeno aportado en el abonado químico, por tanto el resto se filtra con el agua y es arrastrado hacia los acuíferos, ríos y embalses, contaminando las aguas desti-nadas a consumo humano (puede provocar en los lactantes efectos mortales, ya que disminuye la absorción del oxígeno por la sangre (cianosis), y en adultos además aumenta el riesgo de cáncer). Eutrofización de las aguas: las aguas superficiales reciben cantidades excesivas de nutrientes por los vertidos urbanos e industriales y el arrastre de abonos químicos (sobre todo nitró-geno y fósforo). El exceso de nutrientes provoca un crecimien-to exagerado de algas y otras plantas acuáticas que al morir se depositan en los fondos y se descomponen, consumiendo el oxígeno disuelto en el agua. A su vez la capa superficial que se forma impide la entrada de luz y el agua se empobrece cada vez más, haciéndose imposible la vida en ella.

The Word «fertility» means «capability to create life». The

plants take from the soil fifteen main elements for their

nutrition (N, P, K, Ca, S, Mg, B, Cl, Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Mb, and

Al). If any of these elements is not in the soil the plant

will not grow, so it’s very important to fertilize it properly

to keep it nourished and, at the same time, feed the

micro fauna of bacteria, fungi, earthworms… who are the

real soil workers, as they are in charge of disintegrating

organic and mineral compounds to turn them into

compounds that can be assimilated by the roots.

— Organic amendments: sea weeds ( a big amount of potassium and healthy trace elements for our orchard give place to ventilated fluffy soils keeping humidity), blood, horn, bone, feather and fish flour ( a big contribution of nutrients, though those coming from intensive livestock have been rejected due to the issue about the mad-cow disease); ashes (rich in potassium, advisable in small quantities).

— Mineral amendments: non-organic sources that can provide substances rich in minerals and nutrients for the plants, once they have been crushed and ground or burnt (limestone powder, gypsum, silica minerals…). They can’t be diluted in water nor can they be directly assimilated by plants, so their application will take place some months before farming.

In our next issue we’ll enter into detail to explain how a composter is made and we’ll talk about the benefits we get from compost as an organic fertilizer.

Chemical fertilizers —Apart from the problems we have already talked about in previous issues, related to the health of plants and human beings— they can cause serious problems in the soils, such as:Nitrate pollution: plants only take 50% of the nitrogen provided by chemical fertilizers, so, the rest of it filters with water and is taken to aquifers, rivers and reservoirs, thus polluting the water destined for human consumption (it may cause mortal effects on unweaned babies, as they reduce the absorption of oxygen by blood (cyanosis) and it also increases the risk of cancer in adults)Eutrophication of water: shallow waters receive excessive quantities of nutrients due to industrial and urban dumping, and the dragging of chemical fertilizers (mainly nitrogen and phosphorus). The excess of nutrients causes an exaggerated growing of seaweeds and other water plants that, when they die, lie at the bottom and decompose, thus consuming the oxygen diluted in the water. At the same time, the surface layer keeps light away and the water gets more and more impoverished, life within it turning impossible.

— Green fertilizers: they are the crops that are sown to improve the soil, like the leguminous plants (they fix the nitrogen, nourish the soil, protect against erosion, and they can also be used to feed animals and even humans)

— Peat: it’s the first stage in the putrefaction process of vegetation, when it turns into coal. It’s very good for the soil, because of the degree of humidity it keeps (thus avoiding leaching, that is, the soil washing because of rain or watering, which makes the soil lose all its nutrients).

— Compost: it comes from vegetal remains and other organic matter undergoing a process of composting or controlled fermentation. It’s known as the basis of a proper fertilization in organic farming. There are many different kinds and ways of producing it.

— Earthworm compost: earthworms are always working the soil. They turn, through digestion, a big quantity of organic matter into humus and nutrients that can be assimilated by plants. They dig about in the earth and favour the root ventilation.

— Liquid fertilizers: • Urine: either from humans or animals, it contains a

big quantity of nitrogen and potassium (6l.urine=1kg

But if there is a reason why Macaronesia was there it was

to record the presence of The Canary Islands in «El Pri-

mavera» this year. Through our music promotion platform

«Rockinthecity 2011» three of the groups with the grea-

test international renown in our archipelago —The Bir-

kings (Gran Canaria), GAF and «La Estrella de la Muerte»

(Tenerife), and Zürych (Lanzarote) —have taken part in this

festival, also supported by the Canarian government pro-

gramme «Septenio», which means a step forward in the

actions taken by the music promotion in The Islands.

Pero si por algo Macaronesia estaba allí era para dar constancia

de la presencia de Canarias en esta edición del Primavera. A

través de la plataforma de promoción de música hecha en

las Islas «Rockinthecity 2011», tres de los grupos de mayor

proyección internacional del archipiélago —The Birkins (Gran

Canaria), GAF (Tenerife) y Zürych (Lanzarote)— han tomado

parte en este festival por medio de este proyecto, respaldado

por el programa «Septenio» del Gobierno de Canarias, y que

significa un paso adelante en las acciones de promoción de

la música hecha en las Islas.

The last month of May, from the 25th to the 29th, Ma-

caronesia had the chance to attend one of the festivals

with the greatest international renown in the Spanish

scene, the Primavera Sound 2011, in its 11th occasion. An

event characterized, mainly, by an increasing audience

—120.000 people, the maximum in the history of this

festival— and number of participating bands. Not even

the final of the champions’ league or the icelandic volcano

ashes could stop the massive attendance.

El pasado mes de mayo, días 25 al 29, Macaronesia tuvo

la ocasión de asistir a uno de los festivales de mayor

proyección internacional del panorama español, el Primavera

Sound 2011, en su ya undécima edición. Una edición que se

caracteriza sobre todo por el crecimiento tanto en asistencia

—120.000 personas, la máxima de su historia—, como en

grupos. Una asistencia que ni la final de la Champions, ni las

cenizas del volcán islandés pudieron parar.

We could speak to The Birkins —El Genio Equivocado— and

GAF —Foehn Records— and here you are their impressions

about this great festival:

«Primavera Sound is a gift for any musician or music lover. And

this is something said not just by us, who were just a grain of

sand in the large music beach the Primavera Sound was, but

it was also said by each one of the stars as they addressed the

audience (we still remember Jarvis Cocker or Nick Cave ear-

nestly recommending the performances of other participating

bands). This festival has become the great international date

of independent pop and rock, something we can also perceive

in the audience’s attitude, much more cultivated and deman-

ding in comparison to the audience you find in other similar

festivals. We can proudly say that we passed the test, and we

got very positive impressions from those who approached our

two performances on «Escenario Adidas» and in «Parc Central

del Poble Nou». (The Birkins)

«Playing in a festival like the Primavera Sound , maybe the

most important show in the Spanish alternative music, and for

two reasons: it’s quite an experience and the dream of a lot

of bands, as it’s really difficult to get in there. So we are really

grateful to Producciones Salán (Rockinthecity) for counting on

us, and to the Canary Islands government for making this kind

of projects possible. Besides, the chance to take part in this

festival came just in time, when we had just launched our third

record: Gaf y la estrella de la muerte. We were really lucky to

Thus, after five days of funny anecdotes, the festival that is

reaching its maturity stage was coming to an end. A festival

that is growing year after year, that stays in the memories

of those who lived it and whose audience devoted their

bodies and souls to their favourite bands. A unique festi-

val that allows enjoying the most legendary bands at any

levels, giving you the chance, at the same time, to meet

national bands of a great quality and renown.

GAF —Foehn Records— y aquí tenéis sus impresiones de

este gran festival.

«El Primavera Sound es un regalo para cualquier músico y

amante de la música. Y no es algo que podamos decir sólo

nosotros, que al fin y al cabo éramos sólo un pequeño granito

de arena en la gran playa musical del Primavera, sino que lo

sostenían casi todas las estrellas cuando se dirigían al público

(aún recordamos a Jarvis Cocker o a Nick Cave recomendando

encarecidamente las actuaciones de otras bandas con las que

estaban compartiendo cartel). Se ha convertido en la gran cita

mundial del pop y el rock independiente, algo que también se

nota en la actitud del público, mucho más ilustrado y exigente

de lo que se suele encontrar en otro festival al uso. Podemos

decir con orgullo que superamos la prueba, y recogimos

impresiones muy positivas de los que se acercaron a nuestras

dos actuaciones en el Escenario Adidas y en el Parc Central del

escaparate más importante de la música alternativa de España,

y encima por partida doble, es toda una experiencia y el sueño

Así, después de 5 días de divertidas anécdotas, se cerraba un

festival que entra en su etapa de madurez. Un festival que

año tras año crece, que queda en el recuerdo de quienes lo

vivieron y cuyo público se entregó a sus grupos favoritos. Un

festival único ya que te permite disfrutar de las bandas más

legendarias a todos los niveles, a la vez que te da la posibilidad

de conocer grupos nacionales de gran calidad y proyección.

Stefania —o Stefy, como muchos la conocemos— siempre

fue la típica niña que, ante la mirada atónita y preocupada

de los adultos, se subía a sitios imposibles y se colgaba de

los árboles, como un monito, para sentir la adrenalina.

Creció en Parma —siempre relacionada de alguna manera

con los deportes—, y aunque su vocación en el mundo

del Circo Contemporáneo no le llegó desde muy pequeña,

a los 27 pensó que si volviera a nacer formaría parte de

un Circo, e inmediatamente se dio cuenta de que «nunca

es tarde para volver a nacer». Así que se embarcó hacia

Argentina, en busca de formación en una escuela de circo

tradicional. Tras seis meses en Sudamérica regresó a Ita-

lia, donde decidió continuar seriamente con su formación

en artes circenses, y así empezó una carrera de dos años

en la escuela Flic —Escuela Profesional de Circo Contem-

poráneo de Turín— donde aprendió, a base de un duro

entrenamiento, los mil y un secretos de este mundo de

«saltarines», combinando las acrobacias del circo con la

danza y el teatro.

Le encanta llevar su cuerpo al límite y, entre todas las

disciplinas estudiadas —trapecio, verticales, telas, rueda,

mástil, malabares…—, se decanta por la rueda y el tra-

pecio. Su constancia y entrega la han hecho evolucionar

rápidamente y lo que más le apasiona de este mundo es

poder crearse su propio papel: una mezcla entre técnica

—muy depurada—, interpretación y una gran fuerza y

valentía.

Hace casi un año que dedica sus esfuerzos a enseñar parte

de su arte en talleres y cursos impartidos por toda Fuerte-

ventura, isla a la que llegó hace unos siete años y con la que

se siente en verdadera armonía, y más ahora que puede

desarrollar aquí la profesión que más le motiva. Le encanta

enseñar y transmitir sus conocimientos, y ver que muchos

otros, como ella, disfrutan de esas dosis de ejercicio extre-

mo y de satisfacción.

Si alguna vez ves una estructura enorme, montada en

alguna plaza, con telas y trapecio colgando, puedes

acercarte a presenciar un verdadero espectáculo que

te aseguramos no te dejará indiferente; y si además

tienes la valentía para probarlo, esa noche dormirás

con una nueva sensación, que con palabras es difícil

describir.

Gracias por dejarnos volar en tu trapecio mágico para mi-

rar el mundo del revés, que a veces es necesario.

Stefania —or Stefy, as many of us know her— was always

the typical girl who, against the adults’ astonished look,

climbed unreachable places or hung from trees, just like a

monkey, to feel the adrenaline.

She was brought up in Parma —somehow always related

to sports—, and although she had not felt her vocation

in the world of Contemporary circus from an early age,

when she was 27 she thought that if she could be born

again she would take part in a circus and very soon she

realised «it’s never late to be born again». So she departed

to Argentina in search of education in a traditional circus

school. After six months in South America she went

back to Italy, where she seriously decided to continue

her studies in the Circus Art, so she started a new two-

year career at Flic —Professional School of Contemporary

Circus in Turin— where she learnt, through hard training,

a thousand and one secrets of this jumpers’ world,

combining circus acrobatics with dance and theatre.

She loves taking her body to extreme situations, and among

all the studied disciplines —trapeze, verticals, aerial silks,

wheels, masts, juggling… —, she opted for the wheel and the

trapeze. Her perseverance and devotion made her develop

quickly, and what she loves best in this world is to create

her own role: a mixture of technique —very polished—,

performance, and great strength and braveness.

From almost one year ago she has been devoting her

efforts to teaching part of her art in workshops and courses

in Fuerteventura, where she arrived some seven years ago

and where she feels in true harmony, most of all now that

she can develop here the profession that motivates her

most. She loves teaching, transmitting her knowledge,

and seeing that many other people, like herself, like this

dose of high risk exercise and satisfaction.

If you ever see a big framework in a square, with aerial silks

and a hanging trapeze, you can approach and witness a real

show that, we assure you, will not leave you indifferent. And if

on top of that you are brave enough to try it, that night you’ll

sleep with a new feeling, difficult to explain with words.

Thank you for letting us fly on your magic trapeze so as to

be able to see the world upside down, which is sometimes

necessary.
