The executive committee of tho Good Roads association at a special meeting held in the club house of the Long Island whoolmen last night, appropriated the sum of $30 as a dona tion to the fund for the building of tho cycle path from Patchoguo to Port JafTerson. Ibis action will go far toward binding tho wheel- ni*n of Long Island closer together, because their interests are identical The meeting of the association was called for the purpose prin- cinally of sending out a circular letter to ail oandidntos for legislative offices and tho mayoralty asking them how they stand ou tho question of certain Improvements which arc favored by tho wheelmen and horsemen of Brooklyn. President .Angell presided and Bwerotary S. B. M^acham recorded. Those present included Messn*. Share, Schwalbach, McKean. Jervis, Van YIeck, Hewlett, Newburg and Btebbins. Tho principal business of the meeting was Introduced at once, and thsre was considorable discussion as to what form tho circular should lake. Tairasch, the great German chess mas ter, in an extended article on the recent Hastings tourney and its players, has this to say of America’s champion; “Shortly before the beginning of the great tournament I wrote as follo3vs: ‘This tourna ment Is the most important ever played; who ever will be the winner must be acknowledged to be the greatest chess player of the world.’ W'ell, the young American master, Pillsbury, came out as victor, but only -with one-half point. Nevertheless, his performance was ad mirable, the more so as he made his debut in a great tournament at Hastings. It became, therefore, evident again that age has nothing to do with tho game of chess, and that genius requires no routine in order to achieve suc cess. Pillsbury is a player of genius, full of deep ideas, who, as he says himself, admires and reveres Steinitz, as hl« teacher. He will doubtless forever take a place of honor, if not even the first, among the grand masters of the royal game. Furthermore, he makes a fine impression independent of chess. He is very amiable and sympathetic, •without being modest, a quality which only becomes medi ocre individuals; but on the other hand be is not arrogant, but he has the proud self confi dence of his cleverness.” ROMAN CHARIOT RACES. At the time of ad journment, when Showalter sealed his move, the position tvas extremely interesting, though evidently much in favor of Lipschutz owing to the Brooklyn man’s cramped game and. the utter uselessne4>s of his bishop for anything but defensive purposes. The game and the adjourned position were the chief :^bjccts for discussion at all the clubs on Tuesday, when groups of players could be seen analyzing the different varlatlonu and trying to forecast the probable continuation. On resumption of play Lipschutz, with his line of play wcU mapped out, wont straight to the mark, by a route, however, that had not been generally antici pated. The whole will be mounted on pnaumatio tired bicycle wheels, the spokes of which will bo corered to imitate the elaborate ornamentation of the Roman chariot wheels.
