SOCAL SHOWDOWN: The Freeway Series (1-1) shifts to Anaheim
for the first of two games at the Big A as the Dodgers open a five-game
road trip against the Angels and Padres. Los Angeles capped off a
nine-game homestand (5-4) with a 5-1 win last night over the Angels,
the Dodgers’ ninth win in their last 11 games against the Halos. The
Dodgers won two of three games in Anaheim last year and, dating to
2014, the club has won four of its last five games at Angel Stadium.
With last night’s win, the Dodgers improved to 4-3 in
Interleague Play this year. In addition to the Freeway Series,
Los Angeles has split a two-game set at Tampa Bay and taken
two of three from the Blue Jays in Toronto.
The Dodgers return to their road slate tonight, where they’ve
gone 11-7 and averaged 5.44 runs per game, the third-best in
baseball. Los Angeles has hit .267 (175-for-655) on the road
this year, including a .312 mark with runners in scoring
position (53-for-170).
BE LIKE MIKE: Mike Bolsinger (6-6, 3.62 ERA in 2015) will make
his 2016 debut tonight after allowing two runs in 8.0 innings (2.25
ERA) in two rehab starts with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and
Triple-A Oklahoma City. The 28-year-old last pitched on May 12 for
OKC at Round Rock, allowing three hits, walking three and striking
out four in 4.0 scoreless innings (63 pitches). He suffered a left oblique
strain on March 20 prior to a scheduled start and went 1-0 with a 2.00
ERA (2 ER/9.0 IP) in three Cactus League games (one start).
To create room on the active roster after reinstating Bolsinger
from the DL, the Dodgers optioned infielder Charlie
Culberson to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Culberson made the
Dodgers’ Opening Day roster and appeared in 15 games,
batting .259 with two doubles and four RBI.
K IS FOR KERSHAW: Clayton Kershaw continued his dominant
May last night, striking out 11 in 8.0 innings of one-run ball to improve
to 4-0 with a 0.82 ERA (3 ER/33.0 IP) in four May starts. It was
Kershaw’s sixth consecutive start with at least 10 strikeouts while
allowing no more than one walk, a modern MLB record, with the left-
hander striking out 68 batters and issuing only two walks since April
21. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, no pitcher in the modern era
(since 1900) has had that many strikeouts with that few walks in a six-
start span. The closest was Curt Schilling, who struck out 69 batters
and walked only four during a six-start span in 2002.
REHAB UPDATE: Alex Guerrero (left knee) has gone 7-for-26
(.269) with a double, a homer and four RBI in six rehab games with
Rancho Cucamonga and is expected to continue his rehab tonight with
Double-A Tulsa.
Hyun-Jin Ryu, who tossed 2.0 scoreless innings for Rancho
on Sunday, is expected to make his second rehab start for the
Quakes on Friday.
PRIME TIME: ESPN has picked up the Dodgers’ June 26 game at
Pittsburgh for its Sunday Night Baseball package, with the game time
moving from 10:35 a.m. PT to 5:05 p.m. PT. The Dodgers have already
appeared twice on Sunday Night Baseball this year (1-1) and will also
play at New York-NL on May 29 and at San Francisco on June 12 in
ESPN’s nationally televised game of the week.
ELECTION YEAR: All-Star balloting is underway online at
Dodgers.com/vote, where fans can cast their votes for starters a total of
35 times with the 2016 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot, including
a maximum of five valid ballots cast in any 24-hour period. Get
clicking, because voting ends Thursday, June 30 at 8:59 p.m. PT.
AN EXTRA HITTER?: Clayton Kershaw stroked a third-inning
single last night, extending the hitting streak by Dodger pitchers to five
in a row. Los Angeles pitchers have posted a .176 batting average (13-
for-74) this year, while its designated hitters have gone just 3-for-19
(.158) in five Interleague road games. Carl Crawford, Adrian
González, Kiké Hernández, Howie Kendrick and Justin Turner
have served as the Dodgers’ DHs thus far this year.
GOING DEEP: With home runs from Joc Pederson (2) and Corey
Seager last night, the Dodgers have now homered in 11 consecutive
games dating to May 7, their longest run since an 11-game homer
streak Sept. 9-22, 2009. The Dodgers’ last home run streak of 12 or
more games was a 12-game run from May 23-June 4, 2002. After
averaging just 0.7 home runs per game in 29 games (20 HR) through
May 6, Los Angeles has hit 19 homers during its 11-game streak (1.7
HR/G).
Last night marked Pederson’s second-career multi-home run
game (also: May 6, 2015 at Milwaukee), as he posted a
season-high three RBI. It was the third consecutive multi-
homer game by a Dodger following Corey Seager’s two
homers on Sunday and Trayce Thompson’s breakout game
on Monday. According to Stats, LLC, the Dodgers have only
twice previously had players hit multiple homers in three
games in a row and this time was the first with three different
players:
Dodgers, Most Consec. Games w/1+ Player Hitting 2+ HR,
All-time
June 17-19, 1954 Robinson 2; Hodges 2; Robinson 2
August 19-21, 2004 Beltre 2/Green 2; Beltre 2; Green 2
May 15-17, 2016 Seager 2; Thompson 2; Pederson 2
The MLB record for most consecutive games of a team
having at least one player hit multiple home runs is four,
shared by the Chicago Cubs (June 17-20, 1998) and
Cleveland Indians (July-20, 2000). – Source: Stats, LLC.
EIGHT BALL: Corey Seager blasted a solo home run in the seventh
inning last night to extend his hitting streak to eight in a row and is
batting .412 (14-for-34) with two doubles, five homers and seven RBI
during the run, which began on May 10. His career-long hitting streak
is 11, set Oct. 1, 2015-April 12, 2016. Seager leads the National
League with 44 hits as a shortstop and ranks among the Senior
Circuit’s best at the position in batting average (3rd), doubles (10, T-
2nd), home runs (7, 2nd) and RBI (21, T-3rd).
Trayce Thompson had two more hits last night to raise his
overall batting average over .300 (.307) and his May slashline
to .379/.438/966, going 11-for-29 with two doubles, five
homers and 12 RBI in 10 games.
A LOOK BACK: On this date in 1931, during a 14-4 victory over
Cincinnati, Babe Herman of the Brooklyn Robins hit for the cycle for
the first of three times in his career, which is tied for the MLB record.
The only Los Angeles players to hit for the cycle are Wes Parker
(1970) and Orlando Hudson (2009).
THE MEN IN THE ‘PEN: Kenley Jansen struck out two in a 1-2-3
ninth inning last night and is tied for second in the Majors with 13
saves in as many opportunities this season (Jeanmar Gomez, 14), while
allowing just one run in 17 appearances (0.55 ERA, 1 ER/16.2 IP)
Dating to Aug. 26, 2015, he has been successful in 25 consecutive save
opportunities and, with 155 career saves, Jansen is just six saves shy of
Eric Gagné’s club record.
Louis Coleman has made 12 consecutive scoreless
appearances (10.1 IP) since April 25 and, overall, he is
limiting opposing hitters to a .132 batting average, including a
.079 mark against right-handers (3-for-38).
Adam Liberatore has not allowed a run in 10.0 innings in 13
appearances this year and has limited opposing hitters to a
.194 batting average, including a .095 mark by left-handers
(2-for-21).
