STEP INTO OUR OFFICE: The Dodgers continue their five-game
homestand (1-1) with the first “Freeway Series” contest of 2015. The
Dodgers are riding a three-game winning streak over the Angels and
are looking for their first four-game run over the Halos since 2006.
Following the weekend tilt, the Dodgers will travel to Philadelphia on
Monday and begin a six-game road trip against the Phillies (3 G) and
Pirates (3 G) Tuesday night.
Los Angeles has gone 5-4 in Interleague play this year in
pursuit of its third consecutive winning season against
American League opponents.
Tonight’s game has already been announced as a sellout, the
club’s ninth of 2015.
GETTING THE “W”: The Dodgers and Angels have been consistent
winners over the last three seasons:
Most Consecutive Non-Losing Months, MLB Active Streaks
(April – September only)
Cardinals 19 July 2012 – July 2015
Angels 12 August 2013 – July 2015
Dodgers 10 April 2014 – July 2015
Pirates 9 May 2014 – July 2015
The Dodgers’ 10 consecutive months at .500 or better is their
second-longest such streak since they moved to Los Angeles
in 1958 (13 from Sept. 1964- Sept. 1966).
The Dodgers have been in first place for 105 days this
season, second to only the St. Louis Cardinals (109). SOURCE: STATS, LLC
CY GREINKE: Tonight, Dodger All-Star right-hander and Cy Young
Award candidate Zack Greinke will make his 21st start of the season
and 10th career outing against the Angels. Greinke leads the Major
Leagues with a 1.37 ERA, a .186 opponents’ batting average and a
0.83 WHIP (tied with Max Scherzer). In his career, Greinke is just 1-5
with a 4.07 ERA (27 ER/59.2 IP) against the Angels. His lone victory
came on May 7, 2008 for the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Both Joel
Peralta and Alberto Callaspo played for Kansas City in that game.
Dodger starters have posted a 2.67 ERA (41 ER/138.1 IP)
this month, the best mark in the Majors, led by Zack
Greinke and Clayton Kershaw, who have combined to go
6-0 with a 0.43 ERA (3 ER/63.0 IP) in eight starts.
According to Elias, the duo has a chance to post the lowest
ERA by a pair of teammates in a single calendar month,
outpacing the current record of 0.49 (5 ER/92.1 IP), set by
Orel Hershiser (0 ER/55.0 IP) and Tim Belcher (5 ER/37.1
IP) in September 1988.
DEADLINE DEALINGS: Yesterday, the Dodgers acquired left-
handed starter Alex Wood (No. 57), left-handed reliever Luis Avilan
(No. 43), right-handed reliever Jim Johnson (No. 54), right-handed
starter Mat Latos (No. 55), right-hander Bronson Arroyo, infielder
Michael Morse and highly touted prospect Jose Peraza in a 13-
player, three-team trade with the Marlins and Braves. To make room
for those players on the 40-man roster, the club placed Arroyo on the
60-day DL, transferred right-handed reliever Chris Hatcher to the 60-
day disabled list (left oblique strain) and designated the following
players for assignment: right-handed pitcher Brandon Beachy,
outfielder Chris Heisey, infielder/outfielder Morse and right-handed
reliever Chin-Hui Tsao. the club optioned Mike Bolsinger and Zach
Lee to Triple-A and placed Justin Turner on the 15-day disabled list
(retroactive to July 27) with a right thigh skin infection in order to
place Wood, Avilan and Johnson on the active roster. In addition, the
Dodgers picked up minor league outfielder Jose Tabata from the
Pirates in exchange for Morse and cash consideration.
Prior to 1995, the Dodgers had made just one trade on July
31, a 1991 deal that brought reliever Roger McDowell to
Los Angeles. Since then, the Dodgers have made deadline-
day deals in 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004,
2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. A complete
list of trades in Dodger history can be found on pgs. 350-355
of the 2015 Dodger Guide.
HOWIE DO IT: Howie Kendrick went 2-for-4 on Wednesday and
leads the team with 32 multi-hit games (T-6th, NL). Kendrick, who
spent the first nine seasons of his career playing for the Angels, will
face his old team for the first time this evening and his .292 career
average with the Halos is fifth all-time. Kendrick is batting .353 (12-
for-34) in nine Interleague games this year.
LOCKED IN: Adrian Gonzalez has hit safely in 10 of 11 games
since the All-Star break, posting a .415/.489/.732 slashline and one of
the National League’s top batting averages in that span:
Highest Batting Avg. Since All-Star Break, NL (min. 20 AB)
1. Joey Votto, CIN .542
2. Jeff Francoeur, PHI .500
3. Gerardo Parra, MIL .444
4. Justin Turner, LAD .424 (14-for-33)
5. DJ LeMahieu, COL .417
6. Adrian Gonzalez, LAD .415 (17-for-41)
Despite missing the last two games with an infection on his
right upper thigh, Turner has hit a team-best .343 through 19
July games (23-for-67), which would mark his third-
consecutive month with a batting average of .315 or better.
Since joining the Dodgers last season, Turner leads the
Majors with a .332 batting average (min. 500 AB).
According to STATS, LLC, Gonzalez, Mike Trout, Paul
Goldschmidt and Josh Donaldson are the only players in the
big leagues to lead their respective teams in runs, hits,
doubles, homers and RBI this year.
Since his rookie year in 2006, Gonzalez’s 28 Interleague
home runs are tied for 13th among active players.
Outfielder Andre Ethier’s .325 batting average (53-for-163)
against the Angels rank fourth among active players (min.
150 PA), trailing just Joe Mauer (.354), Mike Napoli (.331)
and Jose Altuve (.330).
SO IT GOES: Dodger reliever J.P. Howell saw his streak of 36
games without allowing an earned run come to an end Wednesday
night, after giving up three runs (two earned) to the A’s. According to
the Elias Sports Bureau, Howell did set the club record for most
consecutive appearances without allowing an earned run (36) and is
second to John Candeleria (23) for the franchise record (since 1900)
for most consecutive scoreless games (22).
REHAB UPDATE: Tonight, right-hander Carlos Frias (low back
tightness) is expected to make a rehab start for Single-A Rancho
Cucamonga. Frias, who was placed on the DL July 1, will throw
approximately 65 pitches.
READ ALL ABOUT IT: This morning, All-Star catcher Yasmani
Grandal and his wife, Heather, joined the Los Angeles Dodgers
Foundation (LADF) in a reading event at Helen Keller Elementary
School in Lynwood. Grandal read “Stealing Home,” a book about
Jackie Robinson. For more details on the LADF’s community work,
