February 8, 2018

Dear Parents,

Challenge accepted! We are participating in The Matific Games. This online K to 6 math

resource is running a math competition, and we are excited to be taking part! The Matific Games,

which runs from February 21st to 28th, 2018, awards students as they progress through the

educational activities with stars.

The more our students play, the more stars are collected and the closer our school becomes to

winning the grand prize of $15,000 cash! The best part about this great competition is that screen

time, really is learning time with Matific. According to the Matific website, recent academic

study showed that Matific helped improve students’ math test results by 34%!

So let’s give this a whole-hearted try and all get into the competitive spirit to show our math

talents in this MATH +TERRIFIC competition! For more information visit

www.matific.com/matificgames. You may also read below Top Tips for Parents and Top Tips

for Students.

Sincerely,

Telma Largent Linda Wenzel Director of Mathematics Director of Studies East Side

THE MATIFIC MATH GAMES

TOP TIPS FOR PARENTS

Check out these great tips that will give your child the best opportunity to winThe Matific Games and improve their math skills! Tip 1 Help your child get started Matific is very engaging, and your child is going to have a lot of fun. Help set them up by logging them in with the username and password your child’s teacher sent home, and then give them space to explore! . Tip 2 Incorporate The Matific Games into your daily routine Research everywhere shows that mathematical attitudes begin at home. If you can bring The Matific Games into your everyday routine for at least ten minutes, it will have a lasting benefit for your child. Tip 3 Turn screen time into learning time If your child has an allocated amount of time that they are allowed to be on screens, encourage them to use the time for The Matific Games. Tip 4 Get the family involved Have your child get grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings and friends involved. Explaining how a game works is a great way to challenge children to think deeply about math concepts. Tip 5 Encourage a positive attitude towards math Matific makes math fun for your child. Be sure to speak positively about your own experiences with math to ensure your child is set up for success. Tip 6 Celebrate successes at home Reward your child for getting involved in positive math experiences. Celebrate their good attitude towards mathematics because, this above a lot of other things, will benefit them moving forward. Tip 7 Matific on the go Families are very busy, and often there is very little time for “extras.” Luckily, Matific is available on tablets, meaning your child can engage wherever you can connect to the internet! . Tip 8 Set family goals for the number of stars you want to achieve Striving towards a goal is a great way to keep your child enthusiastic and engaged during the competition.

Page 14: Lori Smith: The Parent's Playbook - Corbett Prep_Letter/... · need to know about social media, staying safe online, screen time, and a wealth of other information. This is appropriate

THE MATIFIC MATH GAMES

TOP TIPS FOR STUDENTS Check out these great tips that will give you the best opportunity to become the student champion of The Matific Games! Tip 1 Have fun! Challenge yourself with Matific activities and find new and exciting ways to approach problems. Tip 2 Ask to use Matific during screen time When you use your screen time to play Matific, you will be earning stars for yourself, your class and your school! Tip 3 Try and try again Sometimes we need to try more times to get answers correct. That’s ok, we call that learning. Play Matific activities up to five times to earn the maximum stars and improve your score! Tip 4 Bring home your log in cards Ask your teacher to print your login card and sign on to Matific at home. If you need help logging in, ask your parents. Stars you earn at home will count too! Tip 5 Get parents involved Tell your parents about The Matific Games. Show them how to play some Matific activities and describe what you are doing. Tip 6 Ask for more time with Matific Ask your teacher if you can use free time to play Matific. Tip 7 Challenge a friend or sibling Challenge one or two other kids to see who can earn the most stars. Tip 8 Have fun! We know that was Tip #1, but it is the most important part of The Matific Games!
