I would like to welcome you to Spain NOW! 2012, an annual arts & culture season that the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, amongst others, is very pleased to support as an autumn preview in London of Spain’s contemporary culture.

This year has seen London play host to some very exciting sporting and cultural events. With the arrival of September, London once more readies itself for an autumn season of high profile cultural events of which Spain NOW! is fast becoming an important fixture.

Some might say that the current international climate is not conducive to creativity. On the contrary, we firmly believe in the need to continue our support of culture as an important means towards better mutual understanding and collaboration between Spain and the UK, highlighting the more diverse and cutting edge aspects of our culture.

We are also certain of the immense continuing international potential of Spain and especially Spanish arts and culture, which in its most salient contemporary aspects go, in many ways, untapped abroad.

Spain NOW! has been lifting the lid on that potential since 2009 and as we prepare for our fifth anniversary in 2013, we present to you two whole months of music, visual arts, gastronomy and performance.

We hope they whet your appetite for what’s to come.

welcome2012 marks the fourth year of Spain NOW!, the annual season of Contemporary Spanish art and culture. As with previous years, we are extremely excited about the sheer amount of talent being presented to London audiences directly from Spain.

This year the flavours and sounds of A Coruña in Galicia, northwest Spain take centre stage in an attempt to showcase to London audiences what the gastronomy of this beautiful part of the world has in store as part of the CorunaRocks series of events.

Galicia features prominently too in the music segment of Spain NOW! 2012 where we bring you the first London dates of 981 Heritage, the music festival which already has the specialist press in Spain reeling with anticipation of its forthcoming maiden dates in Madrid this October.

But gastronomy and music are but the starting point of a programme which also includes the harrowing En Tierra de Silencio, a contemporary dance piece by Camille Hanson Company; the stupendous Avatara Ayuso in a unique collaboration with visual artist Antonio R. Montesinos and DJ bRUNA; and the comprehensive exhibition of contemporary Spanish drawing Nulla Dies Sine Linea.

Pedro Enrique Alarcón Ramírez 17

November will see the return to our already traditional pop-up space, where we have prepared a whole programme of screenings, music and visual arts to say goodbye to this year’s Spain NOW! with a bang.

Grateful as we are for the continuing support of those who have been with us from the beginning, we are also very glad to welcome new partners, as is the case of the Spanish Tourist Office and the team behind the 981 Heritage Music Festival; as well as old friends such as the London Spanish Film Festival.

Difficult as it sometimes is to persevere in the pursuit of the objectives that the team of people behind Spain NOW! set ourselves at the outset of this enterprise, today more than ever we believe in the need to carry on consolidating what has been achieved and growing ever stronger, together.

For that we have you to thank. We hope you will join us to celebrate yet another vintage year for Spanish creativity.

CABINET EXHIBITION7.00 - 9.00pm

ISLINGTON ARTS FACTORY2 Parkhurst RoadHolloway, LondonN7 0SFExhibition takes place 15-21 Sept.

Curated by Toni Ferrer and Laura Guedes, with the participation of Pablo A. Padilla Jargstorf

Cabinet Exhibition is a group show that presents the work of forty international emerging artists from over ten different countries. Based on the concept of the early modern ‘Cabinets of Curiosities’, this exhibition draws together painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, video and other more contemporary practices, all arranged in an unconventional display. The result is a sort of arrhythmic mosaic intended to present a panoramic view of art production today.

This exhibition aims to be an immersive experience for the curious visitor who will face an unorthodox, eclectic selection of artworks. The variety of the works presented turns this exhibition into a sort of barometer to see how contemporary artists address current affairs and the way they give response to them. Some of the issues these artists focus on are mobility, migration and displacement, sustainability of painting practices, environmental degradation, the fragility of digital data and how we interact with new technology, the physical and psychological concept of home or the landscape (be it natural, artificial or impossible) and how to construct, re-construct or de-construct reality to create individual narratives.CABINET

Opening Spain NOW! each year is like unwrapping a present: we’ve been thinking what we wanted to give you all year long, we’ve anticipated the moment, we’ve looked for the most special paper, and this catalogue is the card that goes with it.

This year’s season officially opens with no less than bRUNA’s emotional and vibrant electronica cum infectious melodies, Avatâra Ayuso’s choreographic explorations and her search for new ways to connect our physical, material and intellectual realities and Antonio R. Montesino’s installation “Los amigos de mis amigos” (my friends’ friends), with a visual rendering of what our online lives tell about ourselves and how physical virtual networks can become.

All these sounds, movements and images will happen at The Hospital Club and will unveil all that’s awaiting us in the next two months of Spain NOW!

18.10MUSIC GIG

Under the name of Jane Joyd, Elba Fernández has created one of the most attractive indie music projects coming out of Spain. With her first EP, Jane Joyd (2010) she won the Demo Project competition organized by Spanish National Radio and Benicàssim Festival, and she was also nominated for the Pop-eye Awards. She has played all the main music festivals in Spain, at times supporting artists such as Basia Bulat, Greg Dulli, James Yuill or Matt Elliott.

Jane Joyd has won over the critics with her unique combination of folk references (think of Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, Beirut or Fleet Foxes) blended with Anna Calvi or the most experimental side of PJ Harvey.

Her first album, Shy Little Jane Presents: The Dramatic Tale of Her Animals, came out recently. This time her seductive voice is accompanied by orchestral arrangements creating a highly captivating atmosphere. This is her first UK gig and one definitely not to miss.

This year we pay special attention to gastronomy, a discipline most people nowadays would recognise as an artform. Also, it is a discipline which in the past few years has become synonymous with a new Spain, one that is at the forefront of innovation and which defies current notions or stereotypes.

And we are very excited to count some of the most exciting names in the Spanish culinary scene today among the list of participants in Spain NOW! 2012, offering their take on dishes from A Coruña in Galicia, northwest Spain. In fact, it is the flavours of this region which will take centre stage this autumn.

From David Muñoz and his exciting take on molecular cuisine straight from his award-winning Madrid restaurant, to Nacho Manzano, César García, Diego Bello and London-based José Pizarro, will share their delicious creations at live cooking demonstrations in Canary Wharf. Top class sommelier Bruno Murciano will complete this deluxe offering with a series of wine masterclasses throughout October. Enjoy!

Is there anything more basic but at the same time more powerful in art than the drawing of a simple line? Drawing is the visible trace of a mental seismograph that is in a state of constant activity and actualisation. This exhibition, curated by Blanca Soto, takes us on a journey through contemporary Spanish drawing with the work of 23 artists from across Spain, artists with different trajectories and with different ways of approaching drawing. From pencil on paper to digital prints or drawing-video hybridisations, this journey gives us an idea of the heterogeneity of Spanish drawing to be found at present.

All these artists surrender, without excuses or “guilt complexes”, to the exercise of drawing, not because they seek sketches or rough outlines for other pieces of larger format or in other techniques, but because they understand that there, they can express what they want to with total freedom. Drawing is a fertile form of plastic thought. They don’t only know this, but they show it.

Into the earth is an artistic project focused on social and ecological thinking. It is also a contemplative dance and video performance that reflects on environmental justice and collective responsibility, exploring the relationship we have with our own body as a way to communicate new landscapes that stimulate reflection and grace in a time of dramatic climate change. This piece explores the borders between authenticity and fiction, beauty and the invisible, the familiar and the foreign. The creative environmental pulse is inspired in texts by biologist Roger Payne, and Catalan poet Xavier Bayle, with the collaboration of the Spanish visual artist Juan Carlos Arévalo.

Camille Hanson is a US dancer based in Madrid, specialised in modern dance improvisation and choreography. Her recent creations are dedicated to site-specific dance works, video, and the experience of sound and listening. Into the earth was supported by the Centre of Contemporary Creation Matadero Madrid, and has been selected for The Arts Presenters Conference in New York, one of the most anticipated international events of the performing arts field.

INTRACITY OR THE SUSTAINABILITY OF INTERSTICES6.30pm

ROCA LONDON GALLERYStation CourtTownmead RoadLondon SW6 2PYNearby StationsImperial Wharf OvergroundOpposite the Roca London Gallery

Intracity or the sustainability of interstices will discuss the latest work of a multidisciplinary group of artists, architects, designers, anthropologists, sociologists and students working together and with the support of citizens in Spain. The aim is to present a snapshot of the actions and research on urban transformation that have been put in place in several cities in Spain. Different proposals will be considered within the concept of sustainability, which recreate and embody new possibilities for social and cultural life, as well as an improvement of local ecology achieved via citizen participation.

The conceptual background for the debate will be Guattari’s concept of ecosophy, and how to rebuild the ‘modalities of the self’ in a group, with a glocal effect. The objective is to build a collective conscience of techniques and strategies that will allow for new energy behaviours, new means of transport, ways of reusing, rehabilitating and recycling, and will contribute to the generation and use of new energy sources.

We live in a period of pathological individualism, seeking to shape our personal identity yet conditioned by our socially recognised identity. The way we relate socially is like collecting people; we connect with them but we brush aside affective intensities. I want to have a million friends investigates the social and artistic context of building a virtual alter ego through identity relationships. With the immediacy of communication, life and relationships become more and more an interpretation of ourselves, individual and collective relational identities provide a parallel social structure that, while virtual, does not cease to be real. If you’re not on the Network, you don’t exist. And depending on whom you are going to relate to, you had better devise several profiles and do a good job of reinventing yourself without creating too much confusion...

Antonio R. Montesinos and Raquel Labrador link physical and virtual media, enabling a progression of art to emerge through the cracks between them, discussing the limits of the ego and how to cross those physical limits and trespass into other parallel realities that simultaneously occur in our lives and affect us in some way.

Fashion takes us to places. We can travel in time and space and become different people. And innovative designers allow us to try other skins or to rediscover aspects that we had forgotten about ours. This year, FF>> brings you the universe of five of the freshest and most original Spanish young designers. From the print overdose of Manuel Bolaño and his collections that teach us colorful lessons about “how to repair a broken heart” (the title of his Spring/Summer 2012 collection), to Uke and their concept of “sunny minimalism”, combining 20th century avant-garde movements with the Mediterranean sun and the natural fabrics and simple geometric shapes of Nordic design. And, to go with it, nothing better than the shoes of Deux Souliers, who mix traditional shoe craftsmanship with bold shapes; the ceramic jewelry of Andresgallardo and their unique world inhabited by wonderful animal and floral

motives; or the cosmic and geometric touch of Après Ski’s accessories, combining vintage and antique trinkets found in flea markets and experimenting with materials like resins, wood or antique textiles.Do not miss the fashion video strand and the set of collages that open to us the very own universe of these young designers who are sure to make a name internationally for themselves in the future.

LITERATURE:“THE SHARED PLOT”20 NOV.POP UP SPACE_THE GALLERY SOHOfrom 7.00pmScreenings 20-25 Nov.12.00pm - 6.00pm

Curated by Silvia Terrón and Nacho R. Piedra

A plot is a planned, logical series of events having a beginning, middle, and end. Under normal circumstances a short story plot, as crazy as it may become, is the creature of one writer. But what happens when this plot becomes a sea that receives water from different rivers? How do those waters mix and flow? What can we read in that sea?

Spanish writers Javier Calvo, Mercedes Cebrián and Juan Carlos Márquez are familiar with literary games. Their writing combines the ordinary and the extraordinary with doses of surrealism and acid humour, light and darkness, and unique ways of approaching history, popular culture and everyday events. For Spain NOW! 2012 they have worked on a shared plot, defining their own rules of collaboration and shared creativity.

But the result goes beyond words: some of the most exciting video artists of the Spanish film scene, Augusto Lima, Videadores and Los Hijos have also played yet another game. They have recreated this short story in images using the exquisite corpse technique. Each of them hasn’t been able to see what the other two were doing.

The result of this literary and film collaboration resides in the land of the unexpected, a prism where each element contributes to a unique remix of perspectives and disciplines while retaining its own creative distinctiveness.

VIDEO“CUT HERE”

A selection of clips from the odds and sods of the Spanish independent music scene.

In its second year, Cut Here will present a selection of some of the best music clips from Spain in the 21st Century. Expect not only great songs, since the criteria does not focus merely on the originality and the effectiveness of translating a song into images: the value of music clips goes beyond the song itself, beyond the moving images regarded as a short film or a form of advertising. Music clips are a work of art in itself.

Have you ever fallen in love with a clip, recording it in the old video tapes or watching it again and again on YouTube? The best music clips combine the effects that music and films have upon us: they tell stories and scenarios where we would like to go and live for a while (or at least, pay a visit); they make us feel angry, sad, energetic, nervous, rebellious or romantic.

Cut Here is a great way to discover cool songs but, even more so, you will take with you the images of truly special video gems.

Maverick writer Susana Medina will present her bilingual (English/Spanish) book ‘Red Tales – Cuentos Rojos’ (Araña Editorial, November 2012), seven magnificent stories for wicked readers co-translated with Rosie Marteau. Richard Marshall of 3:AM Magazine has said of it that it is ‘a book of wonders’ where ‘each story is a perfectly wrought performance, an exquisite reminder of our weird informal freedoms and the zealousness of an inflamed, sexy imagination’.

And bilingual magazine Alba Londres will present their third issue, in which they continue suggesting, discovering and creating bridges between Hispano-American and Anglo-Saxon literature. Alba Londres is part of the Alba network, a group of literary magazines

published in different cities such as Paris, Beijing, Berlin and London that also acts as a laboratory for literary experimentation and translation.

DJ VJ CLOSING SESSIONTrans Europe Spain25 NOV.POP UP SPACE_THE GALLERY SOHO7.00pm till late.FREE ENTRY

Music knows no borders. It crosses and joins sounds in infinite and unexpected ways. Like a train going through Europe (like Kraftwerk’s Trans Europe Express), our Trans Europe Spain wants to cross and join the wide open spaces of alternative and electronic music in Spain and the UK. This DJ session by Aldo Linares (the DJ who opens Benicàssim festival every year) wants to highlight those connections and make us dance to wave goodbye to our pop-up space 2012.

He will be accompanied by a live VJ session by Nacho R. Piedra, video artist who has directed videos for some of the best independent Spanish and international bands, including Xiu Xiu, The Zephyrs or Sr. Chinarro.
