So what do great conductors do? The answer lies in those cosmic
performances, where, in a truly alchemical transformation of elements,
something is achieved that goes beyond the composer, the players, and the
soloists, and we are transfixed by the musical energy that is created on stage.
Great conductors don’t create concerts that just happen to you, they draw
you in to performances where you are an active, essential part of it.
Experience a concert in the LSO’s 2014/15 series, and let some of the
world’s greatest conductors take you on a musical journey like no other.
In October and June, Bernardhaitink, a musician with a weight of authority,
experience and insight behind him, conducts symphonies by Bruckner,
Beethoven and Brahms. Over the season,SirSimonrattlewill join the
Orchestra for a series of concerts exploring everything from Romantic oratorio
and 20th-century masterpieces to a brand new children’s opera. And we’ll have
visits from two figures who, as former Principal Conductors, are an integral
part of the LSO’s history and identity – Conductor LaureateandréPrevin
and Principal Guest Conductor michaelTilsonThomas, who celebrates
his 70th birthday with a special gala concert in March.

From Easter until the end of summer in 2015, the LSO
has assembled twelve of the world’s greatest violinists for
an International Violin Festival at the Barbican, alongside
our own wonderful string talent. With concertos spanning
the classical masters (Mozart and Beethoven) right through
to the 20th century’s finest (Britten, Bartók, Szymanowski) –
this Festival is an experience that will be etched in the
LSO’s history for many decades to come.
Amongst those joining the LSO on stage are regulars
to the Orchestra, Leonidas Kavakos and Anne-Sophie
Mutter (who have both held LSO Artist Portrait series
in the past few years), Janine Jansen, and Nikolaj Znaider
(who you can also see conduct the LSO earlier in the season)
among others; an opportunity to see the LSO’s leader
Roman Simovic direct the LSO String Ensemble, and we
welcome Joshua Bell to give a fitting end to the Festival
in the final concert on 28 June.

In 2014/15, the LSO will be welcoming the best in home-
grown conducting talent to the podium, with visits from six
of Britain’s finest and most inspiring maestros. The diverse
line-up spans multiple generations of conductors, and will
bring a striking mix of repertoire to the Barbican stage.
The series includes return appearances by revered
conducting icons and long-standing friends of the LSO.
Sir John Eliot Gardiner continues his ongoing exploration
of Mendelssohn and Schumann; Sir Antonio Pappano returns
for two concerts focusing on evocative orchestral music;
Sir Mark Elder conducts a programme of quintessentially
Romantic works; and Sir Simon Rattle leads four
performances throughout the season, two choral and
two orchestral.
Two members of a younger generation of British
conductors, both mentored and supported by Sir Simon
Rattle at the start of their careers, are also set to bring their
musical visions to the LSO. In January, Robin Ticciati leads
a programme of Ravel, Mahler and Japanese composer
Toshio Hosokawa, and throughout the season LSO Principal
Guest Conductor Daniel Harding will explore some of the
cornerstones of Romantic music, from Brahms to Mahler.
