Inpharma 1284 - 21 Apr 2001 Lomefloxacin had remarkable bioavailability after oral administration’ in men with chronic prostatitis, say researchers in Italy. They measured serum and tissue antibacterial concentrations from 12 such patients who received oral levofloxacin 400mg for perioperative antisepsis once daily for 4 days, at 4 hours (group A; n = 6) and 8 hours (group B) after the final levofloxacin dose. In both patient groups, mean tissue levofloxacin concentrations exceeded those in serum; tissue:serum concentration ratios were > 2 in the prostatic capsule and seminal vesicle and > 1.6 in the prostatic adenoma. The researchers note that ‘the prostatic tissue concentrations in this study exceed the MIC [minimum inhibitory concentration] for the pathogens usually involved in urogenital infections’.
