■ ‘Lomefloxacin had remarkable bioavailability afteroral administration’ in men with chronic prostatitis, say researchers in Italy. They measured serum andtissue antibacterial concentrations from 12 suchpatients who received oral levofloxacin 400mg forperioperative antisepsis once daily for 4 days, at 4hours (group A; n = 6) and 8 hours (group B) after thefinal levofloxacin dose. In both patient groups, meantissue levofloxacin concentrations exceeded those inserum; tissue:serum concentration ratios were > 2 inthe prostatic capsule and seminal vesicle and > 1.6 inthe prostatic adenoma. The researchers note that ‘theprostatic tissue concentrations in this study exceed theMIC [minimum inhibitory concentration] for thepathogens usually involved in urogenital infections’.Scelzi S, et al.
