All that JazzThey were formed at the back end of 1948, they played at The Cavern on its opening night in 1957 and The Beatles fondly (we think!) referred to them as ‘The old buggers’ back in 1962. And now, 62 years later, they are still going strong and are appearing at St Ann’s Church in Warrington Road, Rainhill on Saturday 9th October. We’re referring, of course, to the Merseysippi Jazz Band. The band has played locally and nationally all over the country and were awarded with the BBC Jazz Heritage Award in 2003. Tickets are just £7.50 and are available from the Millennium Centre next to the church and if there are any tickets remaining, they will be sold on the door, on the night. For more details call 0151 493 9350.

Queens Park nears completion St Helens is set to boast some of the best leisure facilities in the region – as the £4 million project to rebuild Queens Park Leisure Centre nears completion. The state of the art complex will offer a five-lane 25 metre pool, dry and wet changing rooms, fitness facility, refurbished sports hall and community meeting room. The facilities will rival those of many private gyms. The squash courts at the old centre have made way for a new entrance and a bigger fitness suite featuring the latest keep-fit technology. Previously known as Boundary Road baths, leisure facilities on the site date back more than 100 years. The new facility is due to open to the public Monday 1st November and our picture shows Leisure assistant Jenny Graham surveying the new facilities. Tucked away in a cobbled courtyard, surrounded by freshly artexed walls, with the distant sounds of spanish guitar music and the remnants of the summer evening sun just peeping over the rooftops, you could be in Madrid or Menorca. But nope, we’re not in Spain, we’re just round the corner from St Helens bus station, visiting La Casa Vieja – The Old House. Once you pass through those gates on Bickerstaffe Street, everything about this place is authentically Spanish and it’s owned and ran by the same family for the past 18 years.

For any restaurant, particularly one which is off the beaten track, to survive for 18 years is remarkable, but once you’ve sampled the food at La Casa Vieja, you’ll understand why. Don’t expect fancy decor

or minimalist table settings, because this place is decorated like the authentic Spansih restaurant that it is.But this adds to the charm of La Casa Vieja; it’s a haven from the outside world, and it’s not surprising that this place has been taken to the hearts of the great and good of St Helens and beyond, including many local celebrities. It’s effectively a warm and cosy place to laugh, love, eat, drink and create memorable times.

Your first challenge is getting into the place. On weekend nights, La Casa Vieja fills the restaurant twice over and if you’re one of these people who likes to dress on the sloppy side of casual, and you think that turning up for a meal in your PJ’s or your trackpants is acceptable, you’ll need to make alternative eating arrangements. Luckily, La Casa

Mi Casa, Su Casa

Vieja is now open at lunchtimes (see advertisement on previous page) and is serving a wide selection of tapas and crusty sandwiches. So, tonight we were at La Casa Vieja to try the tapas.

We tucked into our first tapas, which contained a house speciality, Gambas al Ajillo; translated as prawns with garlic, which was still sizzling in a dish as it arrived at the table. The sweet white flesh of the fresh prawns was quickly devoured and we made good use of the fresh bread on hand to sample the heavenly mix of olive oil, garlic and finely chopped chilli peppers. This is a dish with a kick, and it encapsulates all that is good about Spanish cuisine; the finest fresh produce cooked simply to delight the Mediterranean palate.

Next up was the Cordero, the lamb. Described as slowly roasted steak leg of lamb cooked in herbs, spices and red wine, this dish was quite exquisite! Beautifully ‘falling off the fork’ tender, this dish was my particular favourite and was soon cleared. Close your eyes when you try this dish and to tingle your tastebuds, suck the juices from the lamb; the taste is so good, it’s virtually obscene!

Bravas con Chorizo was next in the queue, roast potatoes with chorizo sausage in a hot paprika sauce. The smoky slices of chorizo dominated the dish, contrasting perfectly against the simple potatoes, but the superb paprika sauce, containing peppers and onions as well as the paprika, pushed the dish to new heights. Again: such a simple combination, but delivered perfectly.

By this time, the restaurant was bustling with diners, all enjoying a happy, sociable atmosphere. Enthusiastically tucking into their food were a large family party, some groups of friends and, tucked into intimate corners, were a few young couples. The staff were efficient and friendly, and were on first name terms with many customers, which is always a good sign for a good restaurant.

We turned our attention to our final two tapas dishes, the first of which was the delicious Pisto, a ratatouille-type dish. This sweet tomato-based dish, which is suitable for vegetarians, contains courgettes, peppers, onions and, surprisingly, a good helping of chickpeas, which add a great texture to the dish.

Last, but certainly not least, was the Pollo Ajillo,

chunks of chicken breasts, cooked in a white wine, basil, garlic and cream sauce. Whilst we both tried this scrumptious dish, with its wonderfully tender breast meat and a sauce to die for, my dining partner finally played her ‘favourite’ card, and emptied the remnants of the dish onto her plate!

And that was the end of the tapas. We were two hungry bunnies when we arrived, fortified only by a couple of slices of toast that morning, and we just about managed to finish the five tapas dishes we tried. We were warned in advance that the tapas dishes contained large portions, and so it proved to be, and with a glass of excellent sangria or two, we were happy to call it a night.

But on hearing the news that all the desserts were made on the premises though, we suddenly found some space and decided to share a portion of the Peras Gratinados. The pears were cooked, then grilled and were served with an almond and cream sauce, sprinkled with pine nuts and accompanied with a scoopful of delicious vanilla ice cream. This was a simply gorgeous dessert, sweet, but very light and a perfect end to the evening.

And the verdict? La Casa Vieja is a sparking Spanish gem, tucked away in a urban backstreet, but with bags of character, lots of loyal customers and a great selection of gorgeous food!

Absolutamente magnifico, as the Spanish would say!

If your idea of holiday paradise is lying on a sun bed by a pool, then Madeira would be wasted on you. However, if you appreciate breathtaking unspoilt natural beauty, coupled with lots to see and do, then you simply must put Madeira on your ‘places to visit’ list. Known as the floating garden of the Atlantic, this Portuguese island is situated 450 miles off the coast of Morocco, and enjoys a stable climate all year round, averaging between 18 and 24 degrees.

Madeira’s capital, Funchal is a fascinating place, with an extremely relaxed cosmopolitan feel. Wherever you go, tourists mix easily with the friendly residents, and unlike most capital cities, the crime rate in Funchal is almost zero. There’s a wide variety of cuisine here, with hundreds of restaurants providing al fresco dining from many types of cultures, though thankfully it’s not the type of place where you can get a full English breakfast every ten yards.

A great day out is a trip to Monte, the mountain which overlooks Funchal. Take the modern cable car up to Monte for fabulous views, and you can visit the tropical garden located on the mountain top. Five minutes walk away from the garden is the ancient church of Nossa Senhora do Monte Church, which is worth a quick visit, but then let your hair down on a toboggan ride which takes you part of the way back to Funchal. Originally a fast means of transport down to Funchal for Monte residents back in the 19th century, thousands of tourists every year now make this exciting trip, sliding at high speed on narrow, winding streets, pushed by two men traditionally dressed in white cotton clothes and a straw hat.

The vibrant market in the centre of Funchal is also well worth a visit, but do go early to capture the real flavour of the place. As you make your way round, stallholders will offer you slices of various mouth-watering fruit; you’ll never realise that fruit can taste so good!

There’s plenty to see outside Funchal too! The bus services are excellent and cheap too, but car hire is recommended

Magical Madeira!

Page 19: Local Life Issue 48

to make the best of Madeira. You’ll need to be a confident driver though to negotiate the steep and narrow roads out of Funchal to the motorway above the city.

Walkers will love the island’s levadas, the island’s 2,500 kilometres-long irrigation system dating back to the 16th century, which enable tourists to discover an abundance of unspoilt areas of the island and its

native forest, the Laurissilva. For views that will leave you gasping, you must visit Curral das Freiras (Nuns Valley), which is a small village nestling between almost perpendicular mountains in the heart of the island.

A great, and inexpensive, fun day out for families is the brand new aqua park at Santa Cruz, which is

just a 30 minute bus ride from Funchal. The Maderia Theme Park at Santana isn’t a theme park as we know it, but is suitable for families with children of primary school age. Children will also love the numerous trips are on offer from the harbour at Funchal, to see the dolphins, turtles and whales at sea.

Despite visiting at the height of the school holidays though, we never felt that Madeira is overrun with children. Perhaps influenced by the cruise ships that stop off at the island regularly, tourist attractions on this unspoilt island are targeted mainly at the mature, more discerning holidaymaker. Whether by accident or design, this clearly works for Madeira.

Regrets? As the song goes, we had a few, but the biggest was only booking for a single week. To appreciate the beauty of magical Madeira and sister island, Port Santo, you’d need at least ten days. But never mind, at least we can look forward to a return visit to magical Madeira!

Re-Birth for NCT BranchA group of local parents have joined forces to re-start the Wigan and St Helens Branch of the National Childbirth Trust (NCT). The NCT has been around as a charity for over 50 years and provides national and local support to parents and parents-to-be, through pregnancy, birth and early parenthood. Locally, the groups provide support for new and future parents, as well as information and friendship.

The group were successful in getting a National Lottery grant to support their first year and have already set up have a calendar of events and activities. The next few events will all be held at Billinge Family Church on 31 Crank Road in Billinge, which was chosen for its range of facilities and because it’s a central point between St Helens and Wigan.

The Launch Day is on Saturday 16th October, and consists of a baby fair and fun day! The event is free, and everyone is welcome to come along, bring their kids, enjoy lots of fun and games, and try some of

the taster sessions on offer as well as the different stalls. Taster sessions include Jo Jingles and Tumble Tots, both fun classes to get kids active and moving. There will also be stalls offering advice and support to parents from local agencies.

On Saturday 30th October, the branch are holding a Nearly New sale at Billinge Family Church from 12pm-2pm. NCT Nearly New Sales are a fantastic opportunity for parents to sell their used (and good quality) baby clothes, equipment, toys, maternity clothes etc that they no longer need. Parents to come along as buyers or sellers, for more information call 0844 243 6325.

In addition to the events mentioned, the group have set up a sensory playgroup, established a lending library for parents, and are planning days out. Speakers will be talking about a range of subjects on the 1st Tuesday of every month. For more details, e-mail [email protected] or call a local volunteer on 0844 2436325.

Chance to Dance? The next Town Hall tea dance will take place this Thursday(7th October). These increasingly popular tea dances, hosted by Alf Christinson at St Helens Town Hall and sponsored by Lancashire Tea, are a great way to spend an afternoon! Held on the first Thursday of every month from 2pm-4pm, the £3 entry fee includes refreshments and entry into a raffle draw for a hamper.

With Christmas now just 12 weeks away, there’s no better time to start planning for the array of functions you’ll be attending over the festive season. And whether it’s a ball, a party, a meal or a simple soiree, you’ll want to look as good as you can, as you mix with your family and friends.

“What can I wear?” is always the question at this time of year, and if your wardrobes can’t offer any solutions, then the answer can always be found at Barbara’s of Standish.

Standish is a pretty village just north of Wigan, within easy access of Junction 27 of the M6 and attracts customers throughout the Lancashire area. You’ll find an impressive array of independent shops and restaurants in Standish, and Barbara’s of Standish has two outlets on the High Street in the village; a large, double fronted ladies wear store and a second shop which is dedicated to selling shoes, handbags and accessories.

Barbara’s hasthe Answer!

Established in the village since 1976, Barbara’s ladies wear store offers discerning shoppers 70 sq. meters of retail heaven, containing display upon display of the latest fashions from the country’s best known and loved designers. Rainford Double JoyAfter a summer of nervous anticipation, students at Rainford High Technology College had plenty to celebrate when results day dawned, as these pictures show.

A Level students at the college achieved a staggering 99% pass rate overall, compared to the provisional A-E pass rate of 97.5% in St Helens. Ruth Halsall, the Principal at the college said “We are absolutely delighted with the results this year. Our overall pass rate is 99% and we have the highest percentage we have ever had for many years. The vast majority of students got the grades they require to move to Higher Education. Thanks to students and staff who have worked hard to achieve an excellent set of results.”

Just seven days later, residents of Higher Lane again heard sounds of excited students when the GCSE results landed at Rainford High. Across St Helens, a record 80% of pupils achieved 5 or more A*-C GCSE grades, an increase of 9% on the previous year, but Rainford High students topped the town average by achieving an outstanding 84%.

The Principal, Ruth Halsall was delighted and had this to say to Local Life, “Our students’ achievements at GCSE this year have broken all records. 84% have 5 or more A*-C Grades with 70% including Maths and English. 41% of all the grades awarded are A* or A, and 34% of students have achieved 3 or more Grades A* or A. We are delighted with this success which is the result of outstanding effort and determination from students and staff, along with excellent support from parents and governors.”

0 Local Gardening Life www.locallife247.co.uk

When in Rome …As we head towards winter, let’s be honest, the garden tends to take a back seat. People generally think the garden goes to sleep from October to March and there is nothing to be gained from giving any thought as to how we can make the most of our outside space.

In reality, we are writing off a valuable asset for half the year. I have undertaken work this year for many clients who have extended their properties, invariably bringing light and space into their homes with increased views of the garden. It makes sense therefore that the garden should look good all year round.

There are so many ways you can make the garden look appealing during the colder months. Structure, evergreen planting and winter flowering shrubs can all play a part. The shorter days also bring with them the opportunity to use subtle lighting in the garden. Visit www.moonlightdesign.co.uk for some inspiration and remember subtlety is the key. Lighting your garden up like a football pitch is not the desired outcome.

As for a plant of the moment, Anemone x hybrida ‘Honorine Jobert’ is a gorgeous white flowered Japanese anemone that will keep your garden looking pretty well into autumn.

Being a garden designer I take my main holiday later

in the year and this time we are lucky enough to be going on a cruise for the first time. Hubby has always wanted to go on one but wouldn’t splash the cash as they say. So one very cold morning last January I booked the holiday on line with P & O and didn’t tell him for weeks. (Well you have to do these things sometimes!)

The thing is, how do you book day excursions to places like Rome and Florence for someone who won’t queue for anything, doesn’t like heights, finds museums and churches boring and doesn’t like walking up hill! I’ll let you know how it goes …

LESS SIXTY, MORE SEXY

Volvos aren’t boxy anymore. The cars that gained the Swedish manufacturer its reputation for displaying all the design flair of an accountancy firm are long gone. The manufacturer’s recent output has shown progressively more stylistic innovation and the latest S60 aims to take the concept of the pretty Volvo to new heights.

Volvos have tended to feel like the safe cars they are when you get them out on the road but with this S60, more emphasis than ever before has been placed on instilling some excitement. The steering ratio is 10 per cent faster than in previous models and the thick steering column is said to amplify the feeling of contact between the driver, the wheels and the road. The suspension is stiffer and was partially developed in the UK, the proud owners of some of Europe’s scabbiest road surfaces, so you can expect a polished performance on that B-road that usually loosens your teeth.

Volvo’s S60 has the compact executive elite in its sights. Steve Walker reports.

Page 33: Local Life Issue 48

Local Lifewww.locallife247.co.uk

The front-wheel-drive layout of the S60 will put it at a disadvantage in the eyes of some keen drivers but Volvo’s all-wheel-drive technology is available with some models and the Four-C active chassis technology is available across the range. This is an active chassis system that uses numerous sensors to monitor the car’s behaviour and adjust the dampers to best cope with the road conditions and the driving style. The driver can also select Comfort, Sport and Advanced modes as required.

The engine line-up is topped by a 3.0-litre straight six petrol engine complete with turbocharger and this 304bhp unit will take the S60 to 62mph in 6.5 seconds. More realistic choices for the target S60 customers are a pair of five-cylinder diesels: the twin-turbo 2.4-litre D5 has 204bhp and the 2.0-litre D3 generates 163bhp for a 9.2 second 0-62mph sprint. Arguably even more impressive is the braking system which can detect an imminent low speed collision and brake automatically.

The cabin is an area where the S60 should be able to lever an advantage over its competitors. The Volvo is simply a bigger car and this car increases rear passenger space even over the previous generation model. Volvo interior design has been impressing for a while and the S60 features brand trademarks like the floating centre stack with storage space behind

while adding more of a sporty flavour with its metallic trim and supportive seating.

Technology features available on the S60 include the ACC Adaptive Cruise Control system that can maintain a set gap to the vehicle in front, a parking assist camera with front and rear sensors and a further camera on the front grille to help the driver see out of bind junctions. The specially developed infotainment system brings the various functions together on a five or seven inch screen mounted high on the dashboard.

The S60 promises low running costs for a car of its size. The D5 diesel engine can return 48mpg which isn’t bad considering the performance it offers while the D3 2.0-litre diesel chips in with 54mpg. It means that the S60 can’t match the best of the BMW engine range for efficiency but has equivalent Audi and Mercedes models in its sights.

Volvo executive cars have usually been safe, reliable and practical but sporty and stylish? Buyers with those as priorities may have felt inclined to look elsewhere. The S60 could be the car to change all that.

On the road prices start from £23,295. For more details visit Rybrook Warrington, Off Silver Street, Warrington WA2 7DH. Tel: 01925 247190.

It’s happened tous all...You’ve parked in the supermarket car park, or perhaps you’ve left the car parked on the street in a bit of a dodgy area, and when you get back it’s been damaged. A careless driver has scuffed your bumper and hasn’t left a note, worse still, some malicious idiot has run a key along the side of your car, leaving you to pick up the tab.

And what a price we have to pay! An estimate comes in from the main dealer body shop, your heart sinks and bang goes the city break you’ve been planning, or that new i-phone you’ve been saving up for.

Stop! It doesn’t have to be this way!

These days when we all took our cars to the body shop to fix up scuffs, minor dents and vandal scratches are long gone. Using today’s technology, mobile body repair companies are perfectly equipped to deal with minor dents, scratches and chips. Indeed many car body shops now sub-contract these SMART repairs out to mobile body repair companies because they offer a high standard of work at reasonable rates.

One such operation is local company Auto Cosmetic Solutions, which is owned and run by Gary Unwin, a born and bred Prescotian. Gary served his ‘apprenticeship’, covering the St Helens area as a franchisee for national company Chips Away for five years, but left the company two years ago to start up his own company, Auto Cosmetic Solutions.

And you’ll be amazed by slickness of Gary’s operation, his specially customised vehicle has what appears to be a small laboratory in the back! It is here that paints are professionally mixed to exacting standards before application, and Gary can guarantee

a perfect colour match for your car or commercial vehicles, whatever the make and model.

Gary’s confident enough about his prices to offer customers an absolute guarantee – he will beat any written estimate from any other company. Unlike many of his nationwide competitors, Auto Cosmetic Solutions isn’t VAT registered, so that saving is passed on straightaway!

It’s not just about the money though! In addition to the savings, Gary’s customers also save time as he will come to you, either transforming your vehicle at home or at your place of work, meaning that you won’t be without your car, not even for a single day!

A session with Auto Cosmetic Solutions can transform the look and value of your battered car leaving damaged areas looking as good as new. Scuffs to exterior mouldings, bumpers and mirror casings are restored to their factory finish, and Gary also renovates damaged alloy wheels.

With dents fixed from just £35 and top quality repairs guaranteed, Auto Cosmetic Solutions offers remarkable value for money for all those who like to look after their motor. You too can save money without compromising on the quality, so remember, next time this happens to you, don’t empty your bank account, call Auto Cosmetic Solutions instead!

There are plenty of restaurants and shops located around the park in case you get peckish, or if you prefer to bring a picnic, there are lots of places you can sit and enjoy your lunch. Gully Town is an indoor play area where children can let their imaginations run

wild – this miniature town has a garage, theatre, gym, post office and supermarket to keep children busy while parents relax in the café.

Last year, Gulliver’s World opened its latest Warrington attraction – SplashZone. Situated next door to the theme park, this indoor water fun factory creates a safe environment to introduce younger children to the water.

There’s no standing water, so children of all ages can enjoy it – even if they can’t swim yet. It’s open all year round, even when the theme park is closed, and
