Editors Note:Written in response to our article on Change in edition 47 of the Alresford Forum.

Change is being thrust upon us. From mobile phones to digital cameras, instant news, solar power, wind farms. I wonder how many of the new every day objects and services we use we now take for granted. I remember when most cars were noisy and smelly and unreliable. If you were on the road and needed to call home, you looked for a red phone box. I wonder how many of us would give up all the conveniences of modern life. We are evolving, multiplying and change happens. None of us can stop the clock nor progress. What we do need to do is get involved in that process and try to understand what is happening in the area we choose to live. No good complaining if you do not choose to get involved and have a say.

In Alresford we have a local council who meet at regular intervals at Arlebury Park to make decisions that will affect us all now and in the future. These are residents like all of us but what they decide on our behalf in our absence affects us all for the future. Go along to meetings and get involved because without your input they cannot form a view of public opinion and their rubber stamping of issues may not actually be what is desired by the town at all!

At present there is a great deal of discussion with regard to the proposed rugby pitch and housing development at Arlebury Park. If you are in favour then let those views be known. If you are against do the same. Or perhaps you feel, like myself, that there should be a local referendum. Whatever you feel about change it is something that we can help guide towards what we would like to happen and not have it just thrust upon us. So come on Alresfordget involved.

YOuR LETTERS AND EMAILSDear Editor,I really enjoy the Forum, which has, in my opinion, only changed for the better!

Now I always look for the Hampshire Mum page first, because I know I will be entertained by the dippy witty Sandra Pagan. But this month I found myself reading an article called Change on my way to HM which has stimulated the following response. As someone who does not read local newspapers, I also appreciate the reviews of local art work. So, please, keep up the good work,

ChangeLife is change, so resisting the basic concept of change, because what we have is familiar and comfortable, will inevitably

To the Editor:I'm a an admirer of your publication and very much like the content and focus on community activities and I see that these events are listed throughout the magazine.

Just an idea, but wouldn't it be better to have them all in one place, on one page, in date order? I imagine your readers may find this more beneficial.

To the Editor:I recently picked up an edition of the Alresford Forum in the newsagents in Alresford. The magazine is a pleasing read and is beautifully presented. I am presently a resident of Nortington, nr Alresford. Would it be possible for the Forum to delivered to us in Northington?

A Resident - Northington

Editors comment:We have recently expanded our delivery area to encompass Ropley and Ropley Dean. We hope to have the Forum delivered into the Candover Valley as far as Preston Candover by the end of 2011 so bear with us and you could be receiving the magazine soon.

cause suffering. We need to accept and adapt. However, as agents of change - especially change which will affect others and the environment on a minor or major scale - we need to exercise the utmost integrity.

We can all think of endless examples ranging from planting a tree in the garden or developing our local towns and cities to the huge impact of building dams which will change whole landscapes and eco-systems or producing massive fishing trawlers which are capable of clearing entire shoals in seconds. As fallible human beings, we have to learn to accept change, let go gracefully, go with the flow, to avoid

In the meantime, keep up the good work!

Annonymous

Editors comment:As you will see by this issue we have taken your comment on board and have reverted to listing all the events on page 7. I hope that this makes keeping up with whats going on a little bit easier.

unnecessary suffering. As agents of change, don't we need to be open and considerate, with a researched awareness of the impact any change we contemplate would have on our garden, our neighbours, our town, country, planet?Perhaps managing change successfully is the biggest challenge to the human race.

Sincerely SM

Editors comment: Many thanks for your letter SM I am delighted that the Alresford Forum's changes have been noticed by our readers. I would like to think that we will continue to improve the Forum over the coming years so please keep on reading!

Alresford Surgery News

We would like to thank everyone for their good wishes, cards,

gifts and donations to The Eddie Pay Medical Fund on our retirement. We have greatly enjoyed working in Alresford and are looking forward to our retirement. We wish all the patients and practice all the best for the future.Doctors David Green and Sheila Cassidy.

Blood Tests We have been given notice that the Pathology Department at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital will withdraw nearly half of the time they provide in this surgery for taking blood tests. This will happen at the end of October. We are making strenuous representations to reverse this unilateral decision but it will mean in the short term at least that waiting times for routine blood tests will be much longer. We will put measures in place to ensure that tests considered urgent by the doctors will be done in a timely fashion. For patients able to get to the RCH Hospital there is still a walk in service for blood tests in the Pathology Department and we would encourage patients who can use this to do so.

Flu ClinicsThe final walk in clinic will be on Tuesday 2 November and we are also running bookable clinics for flu vaccinations.

The vaccine includes an element to protect against Swineflu but the number of sore arms reported are considerably down on last year’s experience. Patient groups who qualify for the vaccination are :

• People who will be 65 as at 31st March 2011• Asthma – that requires continuous or repeated use of inhaled steroids or has required hospital admission• Chronic respiratory, heart, kidney, liver or neurological disease• Diabetes• Lowered immunity (due to disease or treatment such as steroid medication or cancer treatment, HIV, asplenia or splenic dysfunction)• Any other serious medical condition – check with your doctor if you are unsure• Those in receipt of a carers allowance or the main carer of an elderly or disabled person whose welfare would be at risk if you fell ill.• Poultry workers• Pregnant women who have not had swineflu vaccine in the past

Please visit our website www.alresfordsurgery.co.uk As well as being a source of information about the practice, the staff and services we provide our website is a useful resource for other health related information. You can also register to receive this newsletter via email..

Members of Alresford Art Society have been back to

school and are planning to return next year: they enjoyed it so much.

The Society had been invited by Teresa Sullivan, Head Teacher at Cheriton Primary School, to come along and spend a day painting in and around the school.

The plan was for the children to see artists at work, ask questions and be inspired to become artists themselves, creating their own works of art. Other local artists had also been invited to share their drawing, tonal and pastel skills during this special Art Day.

“We also want to create some long term activities, at the invitation of the School,” said Art Society Chairman David Hughes, “which will see a small number of members

“Cheriton Primary School is a small village school and links with the local community are very important to us,” said Head Teacher Teresa Sullivan. “We are very excited at the prospect of this new link with the Art Society. It will enrich our art curriculum and give the children some wonderful first hand experiences.”

Alresford Town Council Reports

Many of you will have read that the Coalition Government has

changed the policy regarding housing development. Gone are the targets for new houses and in its place has been introduced localism whereby local residents have much more say on what should happen in their communities.

Local people are being consulted on how they wish their community to develop over the next 10 – 20 years but with this comes the need to be responsible, reasonable and realistic. For example whilst the housing targets have been removed the housing need hasn’t and it must be recognised that some housing development will still be required. But we now have the ability to influence what type of housing and where. The consultation process, known as Blueprint, also allows us to focus on other local needs, which may or may not be impacted by new housing, such as, Education, Environment, Transport, Recreation and Employment into a comprehensive Town Plan for the future.

In consultation with other organisations the Town Council is leading the production of the plan and to help us we would welcome answers to the questions below. We would also welcome any comment residents may have on any aspect of planning the town’s future. This work is having to be done on a very short timescale but we hope to be able to publish the draft plan for inspection during

December prior to it being formally adopted at the Town Council’s meeting in early January. Any comments should be addressed to the Town Clerk (contact details below) and completed questionnaires can be deposited in the box in the Co-op until the end of November.

Stratton Bates HedgerowCouncillors recently met with residents who wished to see the hedge retained and a compromise solution has been reached. The hedge will now be ‘laid’ some time in December. This will enable the hedge to thicken up next season which should prevent litter accumulating underneath it.

Sun Lane Railway BridgeTwo months ago we reported that plans were well advanced for the provision of a pedestrian footpath across Sun Lane railway bridge. This is a much needed safety improvement to protect our children on their journey to and from school. However, since then Hampshire County Council have now decided to be obstructive and despite funding for the project being provided from the Safer Routes to School grant they are finding reasons for the project not to go ahead.

In the interests of pedestrian safety the Town Council will continue to actively campaign for this work to be carried out urgently particularly as the grant funding will not be available after March 2011. Do we have to wait for a child to be killed?

Citzens Advice Bureau

We have provisionally agreed to a grant of £1000 towards the re-establishment of the CAB Outreach service in the town provided that the balance of some £4000 per annum can be found from other sources.

Christmas in Alresford The Town Council is pleased to support the work done by the Christmas Tree Committee and will once again be giving a grant of £675 to support the carol singing and the arrival of Father Christmas on December 8th.

November Meeting ScheduleNovember 3rd Recreation - 7.30pm ARCNovember 23rd Planning - 7.30pm ARCNovember 30th Full Council - 7.30pm ARC

Members of the public are always welcome to these meetings and there is an opportunity for public participation at the beginning of each meeting.

Here's a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are) 1. When you say 'room' or 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ish. But we don't quibble if the areas are a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes us to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount rates is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tv's. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden' extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay (VAT is included).

A New and Unique Children’s Book ‘HELLO PuD-SWAN’by B.D.B. [BRYAN BEGGS]

Naomi House Children’s Hospice in Hampshire, as reported last month, has benefitted to the tune

of £3000 from the newly published storybook for children by Andover author Bryan Beggs. ‘Hello Pud-Swan’ [a three-part set] is a story with a difference, which aims to capture the imagination of readers aged from 7 – 10 years, in an INTERACTIVE and EDuCATIONAL way. Topics of geographical, historical, scientific, and cultural interest are woven into the storyline, as are the 7, 8 and 9 times mathematical tables!

All information about these books and where they can be bought can be found on the books’ own website www.pud-swan.org and now the first 17 pages are available to read on Google Books.

At its AGM on 21st September Churches

Together in Alresford (CTIA) launched its commitment to raise £5000 towards Christian Aid’s appeal to help the thousands of Zimbabweans who are in urgent need of food and support.

Max Khanna, Christian Aid Church Partnerships officer, told the meeting that in Zimbabwe there is 80% unemployment and 43 is the average life expectancy. 10% of children fail to reach their fifth birthday and half of the population has no access to clean water. In 2008 more than 4,000 people died of cholera in Zimbabwe and more than half of the children who died from the disease were malnourished.Working with trusted local partner organisations, Christian Aid has already been able to provide thousands of families with seeds, tools and agricultural training and this has ensured improved harvests, providing food for health and nourishment and enabling money to be earned, needed to pay for essential medical care. But ongoing support is needed as drought, a ruined infrastructure and an economy in collapse mean the population cannot grow enough food to survive without substantial external assistance. unless the food insecurity issue continues

How to turn £1 into £10to be addressed further outbreaks of diseases such as cholera, anthrax, TB and malaria will continue to claim lives.

“Christian Aid has already taken significant steps to avert the crisis and save lives in Zimbabwe but much more needs to be done and the people of Alresford and surrounding areas have a remarkable opportunity to make a difference” says CTIA chairman Piers Armstrong. “If £5000 can be raised over the next couple of years matched funding has been secured so that for every £1 raised will be matched by £9 from the European Commission”.

With the assistance of Charlotte Page, Christian Aid Regional Co-ordinator for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, CTIA will over the next few weeks be finalising its fund raising plans for the Zimbabwean Church Partnership scheme and details will be publicised through the CTIA churches and elsewhere in the Alresford area. “Whether or not you have any connection with CTIA we would be delighted to hear from any individuals, groups or businesses interested in making a difference and contributing in any way to this exciting project” says Piers. Further information can be obtained from [email protected] or 01962 734542. Churches Together in Alresford are St. Mary’s Old Alresford, and the Anglican, Roman Catholic and Methodist churches of New Alresford.

Youth' it is said 'is wasted on the young'. Yet history inverts that notion;

in fact a great deal of ‘youth’ has been wasted, its blood spilt on the battle fields for our freedom, and it continues thus today. Youth has paid a heavy price.

With that aside, it is only retrospectively with all the so-called advantages of age and experience that we feel entitled to pontificate, but with what? A degree of envy, even bitterness? With a tut – tut, ‘in my day’, or even a remorseful ‘if I had my time again’?

When does a child become a ‘youth’ in society’s eyes: is it between the age of eleven and sixteen, before driving lessons, or the magical age of eighteen when our democracy decrees them adult? What is it about the very word ‘youth’ or ‘youths’ when used to describe a section of our community that has very definite negative connotations?

Here we would hate to be described, in any way, as

Youth‘ageist’ or ‘racist’, but are we ‘youthist’? How many times have you heard terms like ‘yobs’, ‘chavs’ or ‘vandals’ directed at the youth of this town? Well wait just one minute, those young people just happen to be our children and grandchildren; they are members of this community.

Primary, junior and senior school children are excellently catered for in Alresford, both educationally and within the community. The majority of community events staged are either geared towards or are inclusive of the young. Clubs are abundant.

In all our schools children are encouraged to be confident, socially aware, safe, healthy, organised, good ‘learners’ and independent. They are consulted through School Council about decisions affecting their environment at every stage. We are beyond fortunate, as are they.

Yet the moment the eleven to sixteen age group shows the slightest signs of that independence, as a

community we’re not so sure we approve .We are more than happy for them to be engrossed in sport and other hobbies, but not for them to ‘hang around town’ or sit on ‘the bench’. When we provide them with something outside the parameters of school, like a skateboard park, we hide it away rather than celebrate it.

But there is real talent in the skate park, should you feel inclined to go and watch them one day. And those who sit on the bench - some may well be ‘hard to reach’ kids with very real problems but some are not, others may well be promising sports people, or artists or academics, craftsmen or philanthropists. We shouldn’t judge. Regardless, they all represent a gap in our community ‘market’ in that they have nowhere ‘adult’ to go to meet their friends, somewhere (and this is not to denigrate the work of the AYA) that isn’t labelled ‘Youth Club’ - but perhaps more of a ‘coffee shop’ or ‘internet café’? Do they feel disenchanted and annoyed with Alresford

and its inhabitants? Quite possibly; hormones at either end of the age spectrum can render us that way. We are all at some time in our lives rebels without a cause or a clue. Angry from Alresford was a youth once too. Is there not some way we could bridge that gap? Of course it’s easy to find ourselves bound by the (albeit vital) bureaucracy of Child Protection, specialist training, the problems of potential alcohol and drugs abuse, let alone money, insurance, man-hours and premises.

Can we not set up lasting dialogue with our own youth in our community? Is there a youth representation at the ADTP? Does The Rotary have a young wheel; do The Pigs have piglets yet? Perhaps that is a way to start. If we pride ourselves on being a complete community, it is surely insufficient not to try?

What do you think?Gill Grant

First a good news story: there were no children killed on Hampshire’s roads in 2009, and the

number of adults who were killed or seriously injured is on target for the 50% reduction from 2002 figures. Despite many people saying ‘it’s an accident waiting to happen’, in reality, thankfully, most of us know those risky places and take more care. Crossing Jacklyn’s Lane still remains a nightmare for drivers and pedestrians, including buggies, I continue to chase up the County for more work to be done there.

Views please! The County promised 4000 new grit bins, but the first delivery this year is just 1250. I am resubmitting a list of bins needed in, but if the grit bin that you hoped for doesn’t arrive near you this year, can I ask you, please, to purchase a small amount of grit for your use: I have asked HCC if they can sell it at the local Recycling centre, and will feed back on this in December’s magazine.

Despite cuts in the budget, there is a County road mending project called Operation Restore. I know it has caused disruption, but I hope that the new road surface makes it worthwhile. Road mending will continue in 2011. I know the Salisbury Road and Grange Road areas paths remain in poor condition but if the pavement outside your house is bad too, please contact me.

A Day Out from Alresford?... Try Leckford

2010’s success was music to our ears. Help 2011 to be an even bigger hit.

The small village of Leckford lies on the main road from Stockbridge

to Andover and, if one correctly observes the new 30 M.P.H. speed limit, it still only takes about 30 seconds to pass through it, but it has an interesting historic connection. Here in 1928 after the death of his father, John Lewis acquired the estate [later acquiring additional lands on the other side of the River Test, in Longstock] and he created a recreational resort and a place of rest and recuperation for his workers, which it still is today. The estate farms over 3000 acres and provides much for the Waitrose supermarket business.

Though not visible from the road, the gently flowing river winds its way between banks of willows only a few yards away and, between them both, is the old track of the Andover to Southampton railway line [‘The Sprat and Winkle’] which here, has been incorporated into the 44 mile Test Way Footpath... bring your walking shoes or boots? The church of St. Nicholas in Leckford [almost on the

‘footpath’ and facing the village shop] dates from Norman times and is well worth a pause for ramblers, because it contains some most interesting features, not least the remarkable choir and sanctuary seating. This was ‘rescued’ from an Italian monastery by a parishioner and installed here in 1923; the seats still have the names of the Italian monks on them! The visitor will notice repaired stonework around the windows and to the boundary wall. In fact over £14,000 has been spent on each of these since 2002. The major donor was the John Lewis Partnership, supported by Hampshire County Council, Test Valley Borough Council and the P.C.C. Before returning home don’t miss out on visiting Stockbridge... you’ll see why when you arrive... shops, galleries and refreshments all available; plus the views from the National Trust areas of Stockbridge Down on the Winchester Road, and from alongside the Test on Stockbridge Common [accessible from the High Street], are not to be missed.

30 Hampshire Mum's Diary

It’s foggy and we’re driving the twisty, undulating, narrow road from St Ives to Sennen

Cove.

A dear chum texts ‘What you up to?’ I reply ‘I’m in a convoy of Olympians on our way to Sennen for surfing. Pray for me.’ Everyone in our three-car party is very sporty: running, cycling, paddling, mountain climbing, you name it they've done it, and that is just the kids. All the adults, I felt sure, have taken part in the Olympics at some time in their careers; and then there was me, who can barely run up the stairs. The usual anxieties set in.

We were on our way to meet a professional sportsman who as it happened, dressed as he was head-to-toe in Neoprene, looked like something out of the ‘Incredibles’: I had never seen shoulders quite that large, ever.

Anyway, I digress. This lovely chap had generously said he would give us all a surfing lesson. The surf was up, as they say, and Sennen Cove was the place!

Squinting through the salty air I could see the mountainous surf that had been whipped to peaks of perfection by the horizontal wind and rain. And so it was that I found myself partially naked in the car park, summoning the courage to ease

Surfing at Sennen Cove

myself into a swimsuit still cold, damp and sandy from the previous day whilst simultaneously attending to the needs of the Husband and Stars I and II.

“Sandra, just do the Velcro will you, love.”

“Oh Mum hold the towel up! People will see!”

“Mum will I need goggles? MuM!?”

“Ok we’re off, love. Hurry up! Oh, and can you manage the body board bag? Cheers!”

Right. Marvellous. My long waterproof mercifully concealed all those bits of me that should remain hidden as I yanked up my swimsuit.

As I cowered behind the trusty Renault’s open passenger door it occurred to me that I was being feeble about the whole thing. Where was that Pagan spirit? I concluded that at my age no one was going to notice, let alone be interested in, my naked torso, so best press on. So I nonchalantly peeled off the layers of warm clothing – well this was August – and even took the time to fold some of them neatly onto the seat. Topless in what was, including wind chill, roughly minus two, turned out to be quite liberating. Anyway, the costume was on. Now for the wetsuit!

The successful donning of a wet suit is dependent on the following: it, and indeed you, being dry and sand-free, never be in a hurry, and you need to be …. slim ... very.

Now trust me, I’ve done my research: slim people glide effortlessly into wetsuits. Sadly people like me... don’t. It’s a bit like skinning an elephant seal in reverse. And so there I was in the soggy, tissue-strewn car park trying to act like I’d been surfing all my life, but failing miserably as I jiggled and jumped this way and that, pleading with the wet suit to just GO ON!!!

At last, with my flabby contours encased in rubber, I set off down the beach with the body board bag on my back. Was it me? Or had someone scrawled ‘The End of the World is Nigh’ on the back.

The surfing area, designated by the black and white flags (obviously), was way down the beach by what seemed like a mile … or two. By the time I got there the surfing training was well under way. The man with the marvellous shoulders was demonstrating his effortless transition from kneeling to standing on the board, all done in the twinkling of an eye with elastic ease.

Having seen the Husband’s back tweak with uncertainty, I came over all maternal and elected to look after Star II and his adventurous mate back along the beach in the red and orange flagged life-guard patrolled body boarding area. Body boards are fabulous for hiding behind as it turned out; I looked every inch the professional as I marched up the sand, my body protected from the view of those in their beach tents, whilst Star II and chum were happy to let their polystyrene versions whip around their heads as kites.

I sat on my board, to prevent it blowing away, and watched Star II and mate pretend they were surfing champions. In reality, having reconnoitred the sea, they had decided that crossing the rocks just offshore before the beach shelved away was not for them, and that four inches of foaming water was preferable for play.

After a couple of hours, a blue-lipped Star I declared it to be “Brilliant!!”, and is wanting a surf board for Christmas. The Husband said bits of him were aching that he never knew could... and I managed to avoid being winched up by Air Sea Rescue.

Another successful Pagan day out!

32 Business News Information Technology

TV programmes such as Channel 4’s Grand Designs or Help! My House Is

Falling Down are inspiring more and more people to get to grips with improving their properties.

When it comes to most basements the words dark, dank and dingy may spring quickest to mind. Yet, you could be sitting on a hidden treasure that will add considerable value to your house – recession or not.

Always wanted a home cinema, a wine cellar, a games room or even a recording studio? Perhaps you’re just out-growing your home and wish you could have some extra space for more practical purposes. Realising the potential of your basement through a building conversion can create a lifestyle enhancing space that breathes new life into your home.

But it’s important to know who you are dealing with and that they can be trusted to deliver a safe, long-lasting project on time and to budget. That’s the view of Colin Brooks, regional chairman of leading trade body the National Federation of Builders (NFB) and Commercial Director of Winchester-based Blunt Construction Limited (BCL).

Mr Brooks said: “You need the right advice throughout the process of conversion. As with most structural work, you will need Buildings Regulations consent. However you won't necessarily need planning permission, except in

special circumstances, so you will need someone who can advise whether you do or don’t during the design stage of a proposal.”

“Other key issues include insurance-backed, long-term guarantees and industry accreditation. These give you peace of mind if any work does not come up to scratch and requires a remedy. Instead of working with a series of contractors you may wish to consider a company that offers a total solution from assessment, concepts and design right through to build, installation and finishing.

For its clients, BCL provides a full 10-year project guarantee. Its waterproofing system is approved by the British Board of Agreement industry standard and its main waterproofing products have a 30-year guarantee.

BCL has over 50 years’ experience in the building trade, providing quality workmanship using traditional skills and innovative solutions. The company is a member of the NFB which means it has been strictly vetted for accreditation purposes.

For more information contact BCL on 01962 717744 or email [email protected].

34 recipe of the Month

A good and simple recipe to enjoy with a nice bottle of red wine. Another

excellent way to get rid of the surplus of a shoot! I love old fashioned traditional country food; it's where the inspiration for cooking comes from.

MethodFor the stuffing: peel and dice the carrot, crush the garlic, julienne the onion and chop the parsely. Fry the diced bacon together with these ingredients. Put the breadcrumbs in a little milk, off the heat. Add the breadcrumb mixture to the egg, mix well and add salt and pepper, combine with bacon mixture. Stuff the birds well.

Cover birds with two slices of streaky bacon each, attached with a string. Fry birds briefly in butter. Remove the stem of the

red cabbage and the first external leaves. Wash the cabbage and slice in julienne (5mm) then blanch in boiling water for 10 minutes and strain. Next, melt the duck fat or warm up the olive oil in an oven proof dish. Fry the onion and cabbage briefly. ( I like a few seeds of cumin with red cabbage, but it is optional).Add red wine, put the birds on top and cover tightly with foil. Cook for 1 hour at 180°C or gas mark 6.

When cooked remove the birds from the tray and cut them in half. Strain the cabbage over a sauce pan and transfer to a serving dish. Put the birds on top of the cabbage then cover with a lid so that they do not to get cold.

Bring the remaining sauce to the boil, either whisk the corn starch to thicken the sauce or add small tea spoons (one at a time) of

Partridge or Pheasantwith Red Cabbage

soft butter in the warm, but not boiling sauce. Ensure you whisk all the time to achieve an evenly thickened sauce. Alternatively add an egg yolk whisking non stop, but be careful not to create scrambled eggs! Obviously corn starch is the easiest!

Taste and add seasoning if necessary. Pour the sauce over the birds (reserve some sauce for a sauce boat).

Finally, serve with a delicious home made puree. I love celeriac puree.

On 1st February 2011 I open a cookery school at the Clos Du Marquis. I will be able to teach eight students at a time. For more information watch this space. If a Frenchman loves cricket an Englishman can cook!Germain Marquis

Car of the month!

Motors

At the time of writing this we have been in our new building four weeks, and how it’s

flown! We have had so many visitors! It has been lovely seeing and hearing the centre full of children and the chatter of parents.

As with all new buildings, we still have some finishing touches, which I hope will be completed soon. A huge thank you for your patience while the new pathway was completed in front of the Junior School leading to Sunbeams. There is now pedestrian access from the main entrance on Sun Lane through to Sunbeams. Please can I remind visitors that, as we are on a school site, there is no parking within the grounds, unless you have a parking pass. If you do require a pass, please see Tracy in the office at Sunbeams who can issue one.In the next few weeks there will also be new signage which will direct families to the centre, no more balloons!

We are also waiting for some large notice boards for inside the centre, which will display a range of information for families as well as detailing what’s going on. We are very keen to hear from parents and carers and will be introducing a comments board which, with your help, will help us to shape the services we are delivering. Your opinions and suggestions about the services we provide are vital to us.

Sunbeams updateRhyme TimeDue to the overwhelming success of our first Rhyme Time delivered from Sunbeams and a comment from a parent, we took the decision to split the session into two age groups.

9.30 – 10am: 0 - 2 yr olds10.30 – 11.15am: 2 - 5 yr olds

HousekeepingAny new family or carer using the centre needs to complete a yellow registration form. This information is only used for our purposes and not given to any other organisation. These forms are available from Tracy in the Sunbeams office. Please can all adults who attend an activity please sign the activity register, including their children’s names. This data helps us to demonstrate how many families are using the centre and also acts as a fire evacuation register.

Parental Satisfaction SurveyThe Department for Education (DfE) has asked that children’s centres measure the levels of parental satisfaction within their area. It is a way of us measuring the effectiveness of services to families within our catchment area.

Why are we seeking feedback?• To give parents and carers the chance to provide feedback about their experiences of the individual services offered.• To help us to build on these responses and improve the services we are delivering.• To support us in meeting the DfE’s requirements.

Hampshire County Council would also like all carers who attend an activity during the period of 15 November to 10 December to complete a questionnaire. We will be sending these out via email but there will also be paper copies available within the centre. We would be grateful if you could take the time to fill them in and return them to Sunbeams. Once we have the results early next year, we will let you know the outcome.

We look forward to seeing you soon, The Sunbeams team. New telephone number: 01962 736852

Chamber ChatChamber members have been invited to the first of our new bi-monthly 'Chamber Chat' evenings - an informal get together open to all Chamber members. The first Chamber Chat was held at Jaga Design, on Thursday 21st October. The idea is that members can come along for a complimentary drink and nibbles whilst catching up with their fellow local business owners. We plan to hold our Chamber Chat evening at various members' business premises in the future, so if you would be interested in opening up your doors for a future Chamber Chat event please let us know.

The next Chamber Chat is to be held at the Alresford Chocolate Company, upton Park Farm, Old Alresford on Thursday 11th November from 6pm onwards. Christmas Chamber Chat- Tuesday 7th December at The Bell Hotel, West Street, 5.30pm-7.30pm. An invitation will be going out to all members soon.

The Pigs To Light Up Alresford Once again this year we are delighted to confirm that the Alresford Pigs Association will, on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce, organise the erection of Christmas trees above shops and houses within the main shopping

area of Alresford. Last year 50% more local businesses and residents supported the trees, with the majority of the monies paid going to local ‘worthy causes’ – especially relevant over the Christmas period.

With work starting on the trees at the end of November, we look forward to even more supporters this year, creating a festive delight for all visitors and shoppers throughout the Christmas period.

More information on the Alresford Pigs can be found at www.alresfordpigs.org

40 The Plot Thickens

I am not, by nature, the tidiest person – in a family home it is as endless as weeding. Yet

there is a satisfaction in the autumnal garden tidy up that I annually enjoy. As much as I celebrate spring’s arrival with eager trips to the garden centre and summer is greeted with a ceremonial ‘bringing out’ of garden toys and that special deck chair that I never seem to get around to sitting in; autumn has that calm air of unspoken superiority. Maybe it’s the anticipation of our quintessentially British countdown: Halloween, Bonfire Night, Christmas and New Year. Maybe it’s the comfort of being out in the fresh autumnal air and knowing a good sherry and roast dinner await. Or maybe it is simply the knowledge that in a busy family household there is one ‘room’ that I can tidy and it will stay that way until spring.

So, once the air has changed and the chill has come, I spend a happy weekend pulling out spent salad and annuals, clipping back my herbs and idly pulling bits off the lavender. Even the topiary gets a good clipping. The roses, I have to admit, are pretty well cared for all season – I am on safe ground here. They are

deadheaded, pruned back and continue to flower. I had to take a firm hand with a fussy Hebe earlier in the year and, having pruned out the dead bits it rallied and had a fabulous display, so my confidence is bolstered to attack the big one that is getting rather leggy. Taking the dead bits off plants is easy. Pruning shrubs for shape frankly makes me a bit edgy. I have lost enough plants through inclement weather and accidental neglect; I don’t really want to kill any through direct action if I can at all help it. This is probably why the garden beds are mostly herbaceous; they ask simply to be tied back when they fulfil their glorious destiny and pulled when they are done.

Mother is one of life’s ‘hard pruners’. Many a year I have been given strict instructions to take plants back to knee or ankle height. And every time I am grateful, and quietly amazed, that it works. In fact it worked so well with the jasmine last year that for most of this summer it has been impossible to actually sit on the arbour seat, for fear of being caught up like some helpless fish in a sea of tentacles. And now I have the

looming prospect of a full-on up the ladder jasmine pruning like some kind of gardening professional. It doesn’t help that I have had one too many pruning disasters. My first lesson in plant grafting was learnt when I pruned an Acer too far and a prize bronze specimen is now its original green but with unique bronze tips. And in a recent fit of summer tidying fury I attacked the rampant honeysuckle ‘out front’ that was strangling next door’s winter jasmine. Amazing how the thickness of the satellite cable is exactly the same as the honeysuckle; and offers up the same lack of resistance. Only when I pulled the fistful of plant away did I discover my mistake – clean through, copper wires glinting in the sunlight. My husband smiled in a supportive way through gritted teeth.

Every autumn the inevitable question of spring bulbs is raised. We would love a joyous display of crocus, daffodils and tulips. Every year we spend a small fortune on bulbs; we even get around to planting most of them after they have sat in their bags for a few weeks. And every

spring we get a pitiful display. We simply can’t seem to do bulbs. It could be the clay soil; more likely to be the slugs and squirrels. That and the fact that Mother and I have only just learnt what appears to be a closely guarded gardening secret; that repeat flowering tulips need to be of the Darwin family. Alas, for another spring we will have to be content with walking along the Alresford Avenue and sighing heartily.

But autumn is nigh, the lawn is cut, the leaves are swept and the hedgehog is snuffling round for a suitable sleeping spot. Once again I have tidied and swept, pruned and pulled. The garden looks tidy and, dare I say it, a little bare. I shall have to bite the bullet next spring and get more shrubs. But for now, as I look out over the carpet of toddler toys, the strewn coats and bags, the haphazard shoes and we won’t even mention the kitchen, it is tidy, tidy, tidy and that will keep me going until spring.

what are the benefits of Solar pV?• Significantly reduced energy bills• can save over 1200kg of co2 emissions per year based on a 2.8kwp size system• reliable• economic• Get paid to generate your own electricity via the national feed-in Tariff.

Save and Earn with Solar PV Panels

why would i install Solar pV panels?Solar energy is the most abundant, quiet and reliable source of free, clean electricity for households and businesses alike.

The photovoltaic industry currently generates a relatively small part of the total renewable energy supply, less than wind, hydro power or biomass but it has the most potential. The increasing demand for pV has seen the market doubling in size every two years, making it the world's fastest growing energy technology. new government directives make Solar pV a fantastic way to reduce your energy bills and create income at the same time.

what is the feed-in Tariff?feed-in Tariffs (clean energy cashback) became available in Great Britain from the 1st April 2010. under this scheme energy suppliers make regular payments to householders and communities who generate their own electricity from renewable or low carbon sources such as solar electricity (pV) panels. Get paid up to 41.3p/kwh for all electricity generated and an extra 3p/kwh for excess electricity exported to the national Grid. The feed-in Tariff is guaranteed by the Government for 25 years and gives a possible 7-9% return on investment.

Do i need planning permission?installing solar panels has now been made a lot simpler thanks to permitted development rights introduced on 6th April 2008 in england and 12th March 2009 in Scotland.
