Children will be celebratingthe Island’s music, dance, poetry and song at theManx Folk Awards at thestart of next month. And for many, it may prove to be theideal warm up for the more competitiveManx Music Festival at the end of April.

It is the third year of the Manx Folk

Awards, hosted by the Department ofEducation and Culture, Manx NationalHeritage and Culture Vannin, and thisyear there is a multi-media element thatwill win one school a visit from superstarblues guitarist Davy Knowles, who will beback in the Island.

Jo Callister, advisory teacher for theManx curriculum at the DEC, said: ‘Thecompetition is for primary and secondarychildren.

‘We want it to be asinformal and enjoyable aspossible.’

All the primary schoolcompetitions will be held atthe Youth Arts Centre inKensington Road, Douglas, and some at TrinityMethodist Church nearby atRosemount, from April 7 to9.

But, partly due to thenumber of entries thecompetition now attracts,

secondary competitions will be heldonline – entrants will email video entriesand the judging will take place duringthe week of the awards

In addition, to coincide with the Island ofCulture celebrations, each school hasbeen invited to enter a multi-mediapresentation celebrating the Manxmusic, song and dance in their school.

Davy Knowles, who is filming adocumentary on Manx music, will judgethe entries and will visit the winningschool.

The blues rocker, now based in Chicago, has spoken repeatedly of his desire tolearn more about the roots of Manxmusic.

The decision by Folk Awards organisersto use the church at Rosemount isbecause the interest in the awards is sogreat and, by holding some events, thereit will enable parents to watch.

There are even plans to instigate a masssing-song during the choir classes.

Already there are more than 600 entries

to the Folk Awards from children in keystages one and two.

Jo said that while folk music and dancemay have a fusty image among someslightly older people, children don’tapproach it with the samepreconceptions and have enjoyedlearning more about the traditional Manxmusic.

‘It is more accessible,’ she said. ‘CultureVannin has put together a primary andsecondary music scheme which focuseson folk music and also the exams, violinexams etc, they are using pieces from afolk book so you can choose a Manxpiece of music to play in your exam.

‘We are just about to start to update themusic curriculum here in the Isle of Manto make sure it includes folk music.’

With the Shennaghys Jiu Celtic youthfestival taking place shortly after (April11-14) and the Manx Music Festivalunderway from April 25, Manx folkmusic is going to be all around. Makesure you catch some of it.

Music is something to celebrate for all kinds of folk

Some free advice to the new ministers

Help Helen raise money for charity

And so the dust is settling after AllanBell’s changes to his cabinet last week.

It is rather ironic that David Anderson haslost his job at the helm of the healthdepartment, just when he could probablydo with some medical attention to thewound in his back.

And if Sir Humphrey Appleby werearound to comment upon Mr Bell’sdecision to give two of the largestspending departments to novices, nodoubt he would describe it as ‘verybrave’.

However, we are all in this together and itis in that spirit that I offer the followingadvice to the new boys: InfrastructureMinister Laurence Skelly and Health and(soon to be) Social Care Minister HowardQuayle.

• However much you think you know, itis not nearly enough. Learn much andlearn it quickly. If you can do that withsome humility you may even find thebrow-beaten public servants who stillhave jobs in your departments won’thate you.

• Don’t get too comfy or too cocky. Yourjob is at the whim of the chief ministerand if it’s expedient, you’ll be out. Justask Graham Cregeen, the last newminister.

• Any anti-government comments youmade from the comfort of the backbenches will be remembered by someof your colleagues who will, absolutely, not be tempted to throw them back inyour face. Better find a good reason toexplain why you’ve changed yourmind.

• You’ve been appointed with justenough time to go before the generalelection for the public to blame youfor something. Or, if the glass is half-full, to prove that all those manifestopledges were not empty rhetoric.

• When using public transport, try tostay awake.

• When getting wound up byprovocative point-scoring from theback benches, remember you weredoing that a couple of weeks ago.

• Don’t ever upset CoMin colleague andcabinet enforcer Chris Robertshaw. Hedoesn’t countenance dissent and youmay find yourself, fairly quickly,‘reformed’.

• Remember that, ultimately, you’re stillemployed by your electorate. It is thevoters who pay your wages with theirtaxes and, perhaps more pertinent tosome MHKs, get to give an appraisalin a couple of years’ time.
