The inaugural Woodside Gift is just around the corner, and promises to be an event full of excitment, endurance and fun. The Local Extra asked Clint Hillas, event organiser a few questions. These are his replies.

How did the Woodside Gift come about?Gippsland was identified as an area that did not possess a great sporting event. With athletics being a sleeping giant in this country, we decided (East Coast Events) to run an Athletics Gift in Gippsland. The reason Woodside was chosen- it is a destination- a pristine beach, a pub and a beautiful running surface. It is also surrounded

by neighbouring bigger towns such as Sale, Traralgon, Yarram and Morwell. How will the Gift be beneficial for Gippsland? The Gift will bring in a number of financial benefits to the area with over 600 athletes and their families and friends coming in to the area. We would expect such as things as accommodation venues, restaurants etc to really benefit. We will also be employing local suppliers and local staff to work the event providing a further economic benefit. What sponsors are helping out?We are delighted to have Mitsubishi on board as our major sponsor- this has been under the Gippsland

Mitsubishi Dealers banner- we have also signed the NAB, Toms Cap Winery, Brooks Sportswear, Mayos Body Shop, PRIME TV, Coca-Cola, Teal Financial, Crocmedia, The Yarram District and Health Service and the Woodside Hotel. What events are you running? There will be eleven professional athletics races as part of the day and these are part of the Official Victorian Athletic League Season (VAL). The feature races of the day will be the 120 metre gifts for both Men and Women. Their will also be races for the quickest footballer and netballer in Gippsland. Who can participate?Registered VAL athletes can participate – register at www.val.org.au. Any

Black and White: documenting Indigenous AustraliaA Monash Gallery of Art Travelling Exhibition27 November 2010 – 23 January 2011

Drawing primarily on material in the MGA Collection, and featuring work by some of Australia’s best-known

photographers, Black & White: documenting Indigenous Australia examines the representation of Indigenous Australians in black-and-white photography from the nineteenth century through to present.

Aboriginal people have featured in the photographic history of

Australia since the earliest days of the camera. They have also been keen collectors and producers

of photography since the late nineteenth century. And, over recent years, Indigenous photographers have been among the most celebrated figures in contemporary Australian art.

This exhibition includes images produced by Indigenous and non-Indigenous photographers, working in a range of different historical and professional contexts. In a variety of ways, all the photographers in this exhibition demonstrate an interest in using the camera to document Aboriginal

Australia. From the commercial photography of European immigrants in the 1870s, through to the conceptually driven work of contemporary Aboriginal artists, black-and-white photography provides a vehicle for recording, remembering and re-negotiating cross-cultural relations.

SEAL Diving Services recently escorted a group of divers to Borneo in Malaysia to expe-rience one of the top diving destinations of the world – Sipadan Island.

The world famous island of Sipadan is the peak of an extinct undersea volcano rising over 600 metres from the sea floor formed over thou-sands of years by living corals growing on top. Sipadan is located in the heart of the Indo-Pa-cific basin and the centre of one of the richest marine habitats in the world. More than 3000 species of fish and hundreds of species of cor-als can be found there.

Sipadan was officially declared a Marine Pro-tected Area on the 1 January 2005. To protect the reef and its marine life, there is no longer any overnight accommodation available on Si-padan Island itself and the number of divers each day is restricted to protect this valuable eco system. The SEAL group stayed nearby at Borneo divers on the island of Mabul and travelled to Sipadan on each of the days they were granted permits.

Tour leader Rob Timmers, a very seasoned trip leader and experienced master scuba instruc-tor found the diving world class. “The green and hawksbill turtles came within centimetres of the diver’s underwater camera lens, making for some spectacular photography. The super visibility and deep oceanic drop offs combined with the prolific fish life made it a memorable experience for all.”

A highlight of the trip was diving Turtle Cave. This limestone cave has a labyrinth of tunnels and chambers where the skeletal remains of turtles that have become lost and drowned can be found. It is a dive only for the more expe-rienced diver; however the less experienced diver can see much from the cave entrance where large schools of fusiliers and big eye trevally tend to gather.

The SEAL group comprised a mixture of ex-perienced divers and newly qualified divers. Andrew Keay from Sale completed his diving course with SEAL Diving Services whilst on the trip. Andrew said “It was absolutely mag-nificent, I was awestruck by the sheer amount of fish, the large schools of Jacks and Barra-cuda were a definite highlight for me”.

Eleven year old Kelsea Timmers from Traral-gon loved the big schools of fish and barra-cuda and the spectacular wall dives covered in soft and hard corals. Kelsea did 16 dives on the trip keeping up with the adults. “There were turtles on every dive and they were ex-tremely friendly and inquisitive.” “I can’t wait to go back” she said.

Keeping the blisters away!

One thing that I’m always asked when selling a pair of boots or socks is will this help me “prevent blisters”! Well, there is a few more ingredients involved than just your socks and boots when your making your very own blisters.

Yes, boots are one cause, but you just need to take a few things into consideration when your buying a new pair. A wrong fitting pair of boots will do things to your feet that would impress a Spanish Inquisition. Too small and you can loose a toenail, too big and you will get a blister the size of a fifty cent piece. The trick to avoid this you ask? Simple!

Firstly, when trying on boots, take the socks your going to use when walking. This means that the boot will feel the same when your in the shop to when you get home.

Secondly, when you put the boots on, tie them all the way up and firmly. This stops your foot slipping around when you walk and will let you know of any little niggles in the fit of the boot. Thirdly, if your walking around in the boots and they slip up and down on you

heel this usually indicates that they are too big, But if it’s only a small amount then that is fine as this may just be the initial tightness in the shape of the boot you have . Your toes should not be touching the end, but if you can slide your foot forward and just touch it then that’s fine.

Lastly, remember all footwear comes in different lengths AND widths. As a general rule half sizes are a wider fit giving you more room around the small toe area. If your in a half size and your foot can move side to side go back to a straight size.

Now comes the fun part. All footwear needs some time to break in!Do it slowly over a period of weeks and slowly build up your time in the boot.

Socks! There are an astounding amount of socks on the market these days, ranging in length, material, blended materials and features. Don’t be fooled

by slick marketing, a $50 sock will rarely be better than $20 sock, but spending a little more on a pair of socks should not be shunned. With materials it all comes down to what your doing and when. In

hot humid climates COOLMAX is a great material, with quick drying times and moisture wicking properties that help to prevent moisture build up, which helps prevent blisters. Cotton is a cheaper alternative to COOLMAX in terms of comfort but not in terms of moisture wicking, they are in fact the total opposite. Cotton has a great ability to hold

on to every drop of sweat, water and anything else you come across and as a consequence blisters will thrive. Wool is a tricky one in peoples eyes, they think it would be hot and sweaty on there feet, but in actually fact it preforms very well under pressure and doesn’t make you sweat. Do be careful of cheaper poor

quality wool sock as they can have too high a Nylon content. Nothing makes your feet sweat more than nylon.

Conditioning your feet is a huge component of blisters. If you have never been bush walking then your feet will be softer and more susceptible to injury. But on the other hand don’t just be tempted to strap your foot up in strapping tap or Elastoplast as these hold moisture in the skin and end up softening the skin, hence complicating the problem. To condition your feet simply walk around the house in your boots for a few hours every night.

But when the weather turns and you get wet, never expect to get out without something going wrong with your feet. Water, heat and movement is the perfect combination for a blister. Be aware of “hot spots” developing and react to what your body is telling you. Stop and fix the problem.

So what does this all mean for you, simple, take care of your feet, don’t skimp on quality footwear. The trip should be about the sights and sounds of the bush, not of walkers complaining how much their feet hurt.Yours in the outdoors.Chris

Welcome to December. I am not sure where the rest of the year has disappeared to. I am sure it was only yesterday that Rob and I decided to open Fisherman’s Hut, all of a sudden we have been open for just over 5 months.

Christmas will soon be upon us and to bring in the festive season we have a few specials going on in the store. All

our Spotters sunnies are being reduced by 20% for December. We also have a range of combos on special too. You may be surprised at what you will find inside, including DVDs, books, clothing and many other great stocking fillers.

Our Christmas tree is up and towering high in the café. We encourage you to bring in a decoration and add it to the tree. We will also be collecting gifts and making sure they are donated to Mission Australia to help bring a smile to a child’s face this Christmas. Feel free to drop a gift off and leave it under the tree.

We like to support our local community and have provided gift vouchers and tackle as prizes for the local fishing club competitions. Another way we support the locals is by offering a Fisherman’s Hut loyalty card. The card will give local anglers 10% discount on all tackle

purchases. If you don’t have one yet drop in for a chat and we will do you up a card.

The fishing has certainly been heating up since the last edition. Almost everyone hitting the salt water has been catching a nice bag of flatties. Gummy are still being caught and if you get to the Snapper at the right time, bagging out on them is not too hard either (the hard part is finding them!). Lots of people have been catching bronzies, seven gill and hammerhead sharks off the beaches and out of boats. Squid is also on the menu, with the weed beds at Port Albert and Port Welshpool producing some nice sized calamari.

We have introduced a gluten free range to our café menu. We now have gluten free cakes, cooked fresh in our kitchen, and we can also do almost anything on our menu gluten free. Just

ask and we can cater for anyone with food intolerances or special dietary requirements.

We have also started taking booking for Christmas functions. We can cater direct from our menu, or to your specific requirements. Don’t forget we are happy to cater for private functions at any time throughout the year.

You may have heard the promotion on TRFM and Gold 1242 to win a Jetski. We have entry forms on the counter in the shop, so don’t forget to call in and fill in your entry form.

Until next time, from all of us here at Fisherman’s Hut we would like to wish you well over the festive season and hope you have a safe and happy New Year. We would also like to thank all of our customers for your support since we opened in June. Mim

The Asias: Vietnam, India , The Philippians, Timor, Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, There are also some very good coffees being grown in Australia, mainly, Northern Queensland (Capricorn Coast)

The Coffee Tree: Arabica beans and robusta beans are two different species of coffee grown commercially. Arabica trees are delicate, they require cool subtropical climates, lots of moisture, rich soil, shade and sun. They are subject to attack from various pests and insects, and are extremely vulnerable to cold and bad handling. Arabica trees are grown at an altitude of 600 to 2000 meters.

Robustas are hardier plants, capable of growing well at low altitudes of 200 to 800 meters, they are also hardier and disease resistant. They produce more beans per acre than arabica plants and at a lower cost for production.Arabica beans, discovered in Ethiopia, have a wider taste range, between varieties. They range in taste from sweet-soft to sharp-tangy. Their unroasted smell is sometimes likened to blueberries. Their roasted smell is perfumey with fruity notes and sugary tones.

Robusta beans, discovered in the African Congo, are often described as tasting grain-like. Their taste range is neutral to harsh and the unroasted smell is often described as raw and nutty. There are high quality robustas on the market but they are rare and reserved exclusively for the best espresso blends that require a percentage of robusta to achieve the desired taste. Robusta beans have more than twice the caffeine as arabica beans

Interesting Coffee Facts:Coffee is the largest commodity in world trade, after petroleum.Coffee is produced in around 50 countries, most of which are in the “Third World.”When shopping for perfume, take some coffee with you in your bag and have a good sniff in between smelling each perfume to refresh your nose! Brazil and Colombia grows over 72% of the worlds supply of Arabica coffee beans.Coffee is the world’s most inexpensive luxury.A mixture of coffee grounds and sugar, fed to a pot plant and watered regularly, will revive houseplants that have turned yellow in winter. Did you know there are around 8,000 coffee beans in one kilogram of coffee?Coffee is the only product where the fruit is discarded, and we consume the seeds, which are the coffee beans. Each coffee cherry has two coffee beans, when there is only one, it is

called a pea berry. Each kilogram of coffee makes around 100cups of the delicious brew.Sprinkle spent coffee grounds around the base of your garden plants and it will stop snails and slugs from munching them! Coffee is the world’s second most popular drink after water

AVIATORThe

Ben McGuinness and his homebuilt Waiex aircraft.A new addition to the West Sale aircraft scene is Ben’s Waiex recreational aircraft, registered # 19-7411. (Pictured Below)Ben is an apprentice Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (LAME) at Southern Aircraft Services (formerly known as Yungur Aviation.). He started building his aircraft at age 19 in November 2007, and finished it at age 22 in October 2010.

The aircraft is a low wing, all metal, vee tailed tailwheel aircraft powered by an Australian Jabiru 3300 120 HP engine. It has a cruise speed of 140 kts (260 kph) at 2850 rpm. The stall speed in the landing configuration is 35 kts – quite impressive for an aircraft with such a high cruise speed!Construction took about 2,000 man hours and, on inspection, is magnificent. Well done Ben.

CHC Helicopters

This company will have an operation based at West Sale for the next 18 months. It will be using two Super Puma AS332L1 helicopters, namely LHG and LOJ to crew change, etc to the Derek on the barge DB30 currently conducting pipe laying operations offshore in the Bass Strait oil field.

Each Super Puma has a gross weight of 8600 kg, cruises at 127 kts (235 kph), carries two tonnes of fuel and burns 600 litres per hour. They are twin engine aircraft – the engines being Makila 1A1’s of 2,000 HP each.

The CHC crew comprises two Base

Managers (who alternate), four pilots and six ground crew including engineers and operations staff.

Each helicopter carries a flight crew of two plus 18 passengers on crew changes Mondays to Fridays with departures twice daily from the West Sale terminal. The terminal at these times has become a hive of activity with security, weigh in, allocation of seats, etc prior to departure.

Visitors to the terminal will notice that it is screened in order to facilitate both CHC operations and other terminal users’ needs.

If members of the public would like to see the operation in action a visit to the Terminal Area at West Sale at about 11:00 am ESST would be well worth while. Please stay clear of operations, and remain behind the fenced off tarmac area, and bring the kids!

Gippsland Flight Centre

The CASA Flight Safety Seminar Pilot Workshop was held recently at the TAFE lecture theatre on West Sale Airfield. The objective of the workshop was to promote a safer, user friendly aviation environment in the Gippsland region, bringing all the sectors of aviation together to conduct aviating activities that enhance enjoyment and camaraderie in a healthy well organized aviation sector. The convenors were aviation safety advisors from CASA’s Safety Analysis, Education and Promotion Sector, VIC/TAS Region, and topics covered in the all day seminar included:1) Local Airspace Air Traffic Control

Procedures within the military controlled airspace2) Military Aircraft Performance & Procedures … presented by RAAF SQNLDR Charles Robinson3) Situational awareness at non-towered aerodromes4) Duty of Care - Law of Negligence… presented by Michael White and Tim Penney, Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA)5) Dissimilar Traffic Operations at West Sale Airfield… presented by Ward Bremmer, CHC Helicopters6) Biennial Flight Reviews… presented by Tony Peters, Gippsland Flight Centre7) Gippsland Aviators Forum/Discussion… Main speaker Daryl Hooke

There was a good attendance of aviators from mainly the immediate Gippsland areas of Yarram, Latrobe Valley and Sale. Both those presenting and attending the workshop represented many sectors of the aviation spectrum, and included both Military and Civil Aviation, Recreational Aviation, General Aviation, Warbird Aviation, and Rotary Wing operations. Everyone had good opportunity to have their flight safety questions answered, and learn more about RAAF Air Traffic Control Procedures and requirements, and the latest changes to rules and regulations as promulgated by CASA..

Gippsland Flight Centre would like to thank the presenters Michael White and Tim Penney from CASA, SQNLDR Charles “Chuck” Robinson from RAAF base East Sale and Tony Peters from Gippsland Flight Centre for an enjoyable and very informative presentation.Special thanks also to Anne and Henry from ‘Raeshaws at Fulham’ located at West Sale Airport who provided mouth-watering and delightful catering for the day and Peter Stark from Gippsland Flight Centre whose efforts especially using the video camera were greatly appreciated.

To any of our students or pilots that were unable to attend the Workshop, we filmed these beneficial presentations and are in the process of compiling a dvd to send out. We are happy to mail these upon request. If you would like a dvd, please contact Tony on 5149 2223 or 0412 474 016.Warbird Adventures Downunder

The Gippsland Lakes, Lakes Entrance, Metung and Lake Tyers Beach

The Gippsland Lakes, with its calm and expansive waterways, is a direct 3.5 hour trip from Melbourne. From National Park walks, to 90 mile beach, bird and wild life in abundance, stunning scenic surrounds, towns to visit, rivers to fish, and beaches to explore, the Gippsland Lakes are approximately 10 times the area of Sydney Harbour. Surrounded by natural habitat, it makes escaping the busy pace of life so easy, leaving you with quality time to spend with family and friends.

On the Gippsland Lakes is Metung; a tiny village, set on a narrow peninsula of land. The village, with all its character, has a village green where you will find a farmers market each month. A general store and some quality cafes, plus magnificent water views, create an ambience no one can tire of. There is a boardwalk that meanders along the water front from the Village to Riviera Nautic, where you can hire a day boat and grab a coffee from The Coffee Shop or an ice cream. For something special, spend

some time aboard ‘Rigby’, a traditional timber lakes boat whose connection to the Lakes go back to the 1940’s.

Where the Lakes meet the ocean, is Lakes Entrance. Here there is a hive of activity; boats, cafes, beaches, friendly locals, holidaymakers who love the water. The wharf is lined with fishing trawlers and boats providing plenty of opportunity to get in touch with the tradition of Lakes Entrance; an historic fishing town. Marry this with a range of quality cafes and restaurants, and activities such as mini golf, paddle boats, parks, day tours on the Lakes, golf courses and much more, there is something for everyone.

For a change of pace, if tranquil is more your style, you can’t bypass Lake Tyers Beach, just 10 minutes east of Lakes Entrance. The lake, a gentle body of water for swimming and boating, opens onto the thundering ocean beach providing the ideal setting to rejuvenate.

Experience the magic of the Gippsland Lakes and surrounds for yourself.

The retirement date has arrived and I am now about to become a ‘lady of leisure’

So many of my peers have claimed that they are busier after retirement than they ever were when they were employed but maybe the reason is simply that we move more slowly so everything takes longer?

I remember many years ago hearing the then Prime Minister Paul Keating saying that if he had his way 70 would be the cut off age for subsidized aged medical attention, aged pensions etc. I recall brushing the notion aside since I was immune from becoming so old.

However, surprise surprise, each of us (he and I) have now exceeded that use by date and I am wondering if he refused to accept his government pension and the associated perks when he reached that milestone?

One of my first tasks was the obligatory visit to Centre Link. That didn’t go so well and I came away wondering what standard of qualifications the interviewing personal require..

My ‘uneducated guess-timate’ would be that they are on minimum salaries of $60,000 to $70,000 per year but I still asked the lady allocated to my interview whether my situation would also be reviewed by a superior officer or if it stopped with her, and was told her decision was the final one!

So I was extremely frustrated to learn that my business trading account – other peoples’ money was counted as an interest bearing part of my assets. I am still wondering why they needed to see my business bank statement as had it been read they would have realized it was a cheque account which earned me nothing but in fact cost me to use.As any intelligent person but especially anyone in business knows – particularly when it is part of a so called service industry

- unlike a shoe shop or a clothing store where the cost of sales could be 50% or even less, my gross profit (commission) might be a rare maximum 15% with a sliding

scale to as low as 1% depending on the work involved.

Thus with careful planning it usually transpired that this months takings paid last months bills as well as the finals of last months clients and so on, so when there are no more clients the funds ultimately cease to exist!

I used to wonder at what I considered the stupid and even dangerous practice of the elderly of burying their savings in canisters in their back yards. However I am now beginning to understand their reasoning since money that doesn’t even belong to me is regarded by Centre link as mine!.

Some weeks ago I misplaced a tiny teardrop shaped stone from an ear ring in my bedroom, part of a very pretty set with necklace I had had for around 50 years.

It so happened, with an idea that it might be easier for me to manage ‘post accident’ I had just ordered on of those TV advertised upright sweepers so I didn’t vacuum the white carpet with the remote hope I might be able to use that appliance to locate the missing piece.

Seven weeks later when the sweeper eventually arrived I put it to use. Then with newspapers spread on the back step I carefully went through the collected dust. BINGO! There, gleaming in the sun was the stone. So that is one appliance which has more than paid for itself in the first week as I would never have found it with the vacuum cleaner.

Tomorrow I am leaving with a friend to attend two Hindu weddings as guests of the parents of the two grooms who have chosen their future daughters-in-law. The celebrations will continue daily for four days and will be an interesting experience as the last Hindu wedding I attended was in India in 1975, so I will have plenty to tell you in January Corner.

I do hope all our readers have a Happy Christmas as well as a safe healthy and prosperous New Year.

Until next time Lorraine .

53 Year Event Falls To Code RedThe Golden Beach Summer Surf Festival is host to the longest running surf fishing competition in Australia and is an icon feature of the Ninety Mile Beach Gippsland.

As did the events of 9/11 force us to change the way we do business so does now the events of Black Saturday bring about a change in the way we operate.

The Golden Beach Summer Surf Festival and Surf Fishing Competition will no longer be held on the weekend prior to Australia Day in January; the Event Managers have rescheduled this event to coincide with the Easter weekend on a permanent basis.

The change to the event date was brought about as a result of the introduction of the new fire season weather warnings in particular Code Red. The event organisers/ managers are unable to provide an appropriate risk management plan for such events of extreme weather conditions and in the interest of public safety have decided to move the event to a time period less likely to be impacted by such conditions.

It should be noted that the Golden Beach Surf Fishing Competition the main feature of the Festival is conducted along the coast line from Seaspray to Lochsport and Parks Victoria has proclaimed that the coastal parks from Seaspray to Lakes Entrance will be closed during days declared Code Red.

Ken Dyster Secretary of the Golden Paradise Beach Ratepayers & Residents Association says whilst it is disappointing that the event had to be moved to Easter the new 4 day competition will continue to entertain families for many years to come.

Sale trained greyhound El Grand Senor staked a claim to be considered one of Greyhound Racings all time greats with victory in last Thursday’s Melbourne Cup Final.

Starting a pronounced odds on favourite with the punters, the Carolyn Jones speedster gave supporters a few heart palpitations before recording a hollow victory. Pre race discussions had only a poor start from the boxes standing between El Grand Senor and victory.

As if to add some excitement to the occasion, El Grand Senor missed the start and was checked in the first few metres. With some supporters about to give up hope, El Grand Senor quickly recovered and found some clear galloping room then quickly dashed to a 7 length lead and put the race beyond doubt. Such was the black dogs dominance that the large crowd broke into loud applause 200 metres from the finish to salute greyhound racing latest superstar.

In completing his third Group 1 victory El Grand Senor moved into the top 10 of Greyhound Racing’s all time highest money earners. With total earnings in excess of $400,000 and 3 Group 1 victories to his name, El Grand Senor can justifiably lay claim to being the best performed racing animal of any code to come from this area.

Carolyn Jones said that “ I feel like the luckiest person in the world right now with such a fantastic dog” and further stated “ this is the biggest and most exciting race on our program, and I am just so pleased to have been part of it.

El Grand Senor is owned and trained and was bred by Carolyn Jones from her former top class race bitch Elgrando Gold.

A lucrative Stud career awaits El Grand Senor with interest already being shown in the dogs stud potential from greyhound breeders around the world.

But this aspect of his career will be put on hold for the meantime and El Grand Senor will continue to race with the next Group Race to be targeting being the Ballarat Cup in early December.

SALE CUP BOXING DAYThe Gold 1242 Sale Cup, to be run Boxing Day, will be run as a Group

1 event for the first time. Billed as the Richest Middle Distance Race in Australia the race has grown in prestige and prizemoney to the extent that it is now recognised as a Group 1 event, the first time that this honour has been bestowed on a race run by a Provincial Greyhound Racing Club.

The best of Australia’s greyhounds are expected to tackle the arduous 650m journey in search of the $50,000 first prize.

Cup Night at Sale Greyhounds on Boxing Day is regarded as one of the key racing events in Victoria and with the program of entertainment lined up for patrons, this years event will not disappoint. First race is at 6.00pm and admission is free.

Bright future for Academy table tennis

The Gippsland Sports Academy Table Tennis Programme has successfully completed its first year. Academy

athletes from all over Gippsland came together recently to be proudly presented with their graduation certificates by Member for Morwell Mr Russell Northe and Latrobe City Mayor Cr Kellie O’Callaghan.

“It’s their turn to shine, they’ve worked hard all year and really left their mark on the sport of table tennis” Academy Chief Executive Officer, Judi Buhagiar said, “it was really gratifying to see their faces when they were being presented certificates by two respected community leaders such as Russell & Kellie, she added.”

Mr Northe congratulated the Gippsland Sports Academy on the wonderful job they do to ensure Gippsland athletes are given the best possible opportunity to reach their full potential and congratulated the athletes for making the most of the opportunity they were given.

Buhagiar also said “It’s been a very successful year with two of our players bringing home bronze from the National Championships held in Queensland , another athlete being named as an emergency and our head coach was in Delhi at the Commonwealth

Games as the assistant coach to the Australian Table Tennis Team. We couldn’t have done it without the support of the volunteers from Leongatha, Traralgon and Bairnsdale Table Tennis Associations and Table Tennis Victoria.”

“We are in the planning stages for the 2011 programme and already we can see an improvement with the inclusion of the Wonthaggi Table Tennis Association. We are really excited about what 2011 will bring”.Academy girls make Victorian golf squad

Head Coach of the Credit Collect Gippsland Sports Academy golf programme, Rob Nichols, is delighted with the selection of two athletes into the Under 18 Victorian Women’s Golf Squad.

Bonnie Chignell ( Rosedale ) and Johanna Wyllie ( Lucknow ) gained

selection after their impressive results in the Victorian Junior Open Championships where Bonnie was a semi-finalist and Johanna a quarter finalist.

Nichols said the girls were in an extremely competitive field during the championships but their results spoke for themselves with their top 8 results clinching them a place in the squad.

The only girls in the Credit Collect golf programme from 13, Bonnie and Johanna have set the pace for the boys. “It’s a challenge and an inspiration to the boys and helps to lift everyone’s horizons,” Nichols said. He said that the girls had worked hard and deserved the recognition and their place.

Early next year a Victorian team of six will be selected from the squad. The team will compete at a number of interstate tournaments during the year.

We’re getting

financially savvy at a

younger age: Whatever your stage in life,

managing your finances is always important and it appears this

message is coming through strong from a younger age, according to a

recent survey.

Club Financial Services Gippsland

D i r e c t o r Rob Egan said

that “as you move through life your priorities change, and

there are lessons that can be learnt at each of these stages. A key financial life lesson is the sooner you get started, the sooner you’ll be reaping the rewards.

“It appears people are heeding this advice, with 7 percent of respondents indicating that they purchased their first home before they were aged 30, and the results also showing the younger generation have purchased their first home earlier in life, being a very financially savvy bunch.

“Whilst many younger people may struggle to save as they meet bond, rent and general living expenses, it’s also common for people in their 20s to still be living with their parents. With few outgoing costs they often have quite a high disposable income, making it the ideal time to get a foot up on the

property ladder and our survey results showing that many are doing just that.” Mr Egan said.

Local mortgage broking firm, Club Financial Services conducted the national survey in Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland, with 95 percent of respondents having a loan of some variety (76 percent a home loan, 44 percent an investment loan, 13 percent a personal loan and 5 per cent a business loan).

Whilst this data shows the younger generation keen to get a foot up the property ladder, it is not surprising given the recent First Home Buyers Incentives. However, whilst grants have existed many have argued that these have been offset by rising property prices, meaning the average loan commitment for first home buyers has also increased.

Whilst the survey results look positive for the younger generation, first home buyer incentives are now significantly reduced and housing data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Oct 11 shows a weakened demand by the first home buyer. During August the number of home loans taken by first time buyers was just 7,460 and volumes haven’t been that low since Feb 2005. As a proportion of the overall owner occupier market, first time buyers equate to just 15.5 percent of the market, with South Australia and Tasmania being the weakest. Probably not so coincidentally RP data reports that these two most affordable capital city markets in Australia also have the lowest level of first time buyer activity. The findings highlight that housing affordability is not the strongest driver for first home buyers – more important are the employment opportunities that exist in the region.

“Perhaps the biggest figure to support our younger generation being financially savvy, is that as well has purchasing their first home younger, they are also getting early investment confidence, with 35 percent of respondents aged 18-29 and 44 per cent of all respondents under the age of 40 having already started an investment portfolio. This contrasted significantly to the results of respondents aged over 40 years of age, of whom just 13 percent had started their investment portfolio by the age of 30.

“With recent gains in property (in the 12 months to September 2010, house values rose 9.4 percent in Sydney, 12.4 percent in Melbourne and 6 percent in Adelaide), building a property portfolio appears an increasingly common strategy for wealth creation.

“With only 15 percent of these respondents indicating that they had commenced retirement planning, it would appear the younger generation believe property investing is an excellent source of cash flow as well as an appreciating asset, rather the considering the more traditional retirement planning strategies” Mr Egan said.

Whilst showing they are financially savvy, people in their 20s have often been typecast as being focussed on wanting gratification today and paying for it tomorrow, building up lots of credit and personal loans.

“This assumption was somewhat confirmed with 22 percent of people in their 20s having a personal loan, significantly higher than any other age group in the survey.

“Whilst our survey shows the younger generation to be a financially aware bunch, our advice to people in their 20s, is to identify their financial goals, to ensure they are making decisions now that put them in a strong financial position in the future. Short-term goals (five years or less) may include a wedding, honeymoon, furniture, a new car or an investment property, medium-term goals could include owning a home and financing children’s educations and long-term goals may include retirement and travel.

“Whilst some of these timeframes may seem a long way off, being able to plan for the short, medium and long term will make your financial goals far more achievable and ensure the younger generation remains financially savvy throughout their life.” Mr Egan said.

Howdy Folks! Ho Ho Ho. Are you ready for Christmas? Me either - me either, never mind back to the calm of the garden.

This morning on ABC, we were queried about no dig gardening. Morris offered to put his recipe on their website. I quickly jumped in and asked him to write an article for us. He’s too nice to refuse, so once again, let me introduce you to Morris Holmes, gardener extraordinare....

A no dig garden is very siimple. The diagram above shows the method of loading and getting the structure up and running.

The frame can be timber, plastic or even corrugated iron. Commence the fill with a layer of cardboard on the surface, being sure to place the frame over the cardboard , covering any weeds or grass on the site. Place a layer of newspaper about 4cm deep over the cardboard, then commence layering with lucerne hay, light dressings of blood and bone or similar fertilizer, newspaper or shredded papers, oaten or wheaten straw, or similar, a light layer of compost or garden soil, even potting mix.

Really, the layers can be of almost any material that will readily compost down. Repeat the layers as many times as it takes to fill the frame in your garden, but be sure to add some blood and bone or organic fertilizer between layers. The last layer needs to be either composted materials, reasonable quality potting mix, or garden loam for planting you first seedlings. I do recommend that once planted, you should liquid feed with a seaweed fertilizer at fortnightly

intervals.

Remember, this is a no dig garden and it is unnecessary, in fact, detrimental to dig it over between crops. Just top it up after each crop with another layer and off you go again. Just a couple of Dont’s. Avoid glossy paper - too slow to break down, and only use cardboard in the first layer of materials. - Morris

Thankyou Morris. On another note - Please support the RSPCA and buy a Christmas Tree from us this year. Stored under cover, held in water and trimmed to shape - they are the best trees in town! We sell the stands that hold and water them, and can arrange delivery too. Have a wonderful Christmas and a grand New Year. Thanks so much for all your support and fun this year. Cheers! Nancy, Linda, Dave, Morris and all the gang from RGN.

Powelltown’s history comes from logging, and there is still a major timber mill in the middle of town, as is the Powelly Pub and the Little Yarra Gallery that promotes wooden craft of the area, many pieces made by locals of the region. Visit the surrounding hills and the spectacular 7 acre rock climbs. The Ada Tree, a giant Mountain Ash, is considered to be one of Victoria’s largest trees. It towers over the surrounding rainforest in the headwaters of the Little Ada River north-east of Powelltown.

Neerim South is located in the southern foothills of the Great Dividing Range. It has become an appealing place to visit for travellers as it is well served by its collection of galleries, cafes and gourmet food outlets. Visit the Tarago Reservoir, then journey back North along the Main Neerim Road. You’ll pass through scenic countryside and lush rolling hills. Stop and admire the amazing views at the lookout points on the steep descent down to Noojee.

NOOJEE This wonderful “Valley of Contentment” has many natural attractions. Noojee has beautiful birds and wildlife, and great trout fishing. The lovely picnic grounds are nestled on the banks of the Latrobe River in the heart of town. Noojee township was first settled by gold prospectors in the mid 1860’s. Tin was found in good quantities west of Noojee and a road was surveyed in 1878. This opened the area to farmers who selected land up to 15km north of the Latrobe River.

In 1919 the railway was built to Noojee. Trestle Bridge is just a few minutes drive, or a pleasant walk, from Noojee. This bridge, known as No. 7, is the only remaining of seven trestle bridges on the section of railway line between Nayook and Noojee.

Toorongo Falls offers a 1800m circuit walking track to the Toorongo Falls with a branch to the Amphitheatre Falls. The walks beside the streams are beautiful, with rock formations and many species of ferns.

Shannons insurance has come on board as the naming sponsor of Queensland’s major car and bike show, Autospectacular.

The all-new Shannons Queensland Autospectacular will take place at the Willowbank Raceway during the Ipswich Festival thanks to a partnership between the organising Buick Car Club of Australia (Qld.) and Willowbank Raceway.

It is expected to draw more than 900 show and display cars and 300 traders to its new venue on April 10.

The Buick Car Club initiated and was responsible for the highly successful Cleveland Autospectacular staged for past decade, but urban and other pressures forced the event’s relocation.

Along with the new name and venue will come a number of other new features, including the chance for show car entrants, traders and sponsors to race their cars on the Ipswich drag strip during the event.

“It was already a fantastic event when it was held at the Cleveland Show Grounds, but it was limited by space. Now that it has moved to a bigger and better location it could easily become the best ‘all-makes’ car and bike show in the State, where we will see the largest gathering of car club enthusiasts.

“This is not just a huge static show. It

also features a large swap meet, ‘Test & Tune’ quarter mile drag racing and a huge variety of traders.

“Shannons has always had a long association with car club movement so we couldn’t pass up this opportunity to be the major sponsor. We also hope to see the event become a two-day event in 2012.”

At the 2011 Autospectacular, Shannons will be running a ‘Get a quote’ competition, with Hot Laps for two lucky winners with Jim Richards in his 320km/h Porsche GT2 to be taken at Lakeside Raceway on August 15 next year (conditions apply).

The famous Shannons Goggomobil will also head down the Willowbank Drag Strip, with a prize at Autospectacular for the person who can guess its Elapsed Time.

“We have no idea ourselves,” said Phil Ross. “We’ve never run it at Willowbank. The only clue we can give is that with a two cylinder engine producing just 15 horsepower and a top speed of 100km/h with a stiff tail-wind, an hourglass might be more appropriate than a stopwatch!”

Willowbank Raceway is Queensland’s premier drag racing facility and hosts four major drag racing events each year. Its annual Queen’s Birthday event is the largest drag racing event outside of the USA and is the season finale for the ANDRA Pro Series calendar.
