Winston-Salem Jaycees Hold Holiday Parade & Christmas Cheer Service ProjectTwo Christmas traditions return to Winston-Salem, both in their 24th year, courtesy of the Winston-Salem Jaycees. First, the annual Jaycees Holiday Parade kicks off the city’s Christmas celebrations on Saturday, Dec. 6. A week later, the Jaycees hold their biggest service project of the year, Christmas Cheer.

The Winston-Salem Jaycees Holiday Parade begins at 5 p.m. at the intersection of Fourth and Poplar streets, then proceeds down Fourth through the heart of downtown to Liberty Street. The route continues on Liberty Street, ending at Corpening Plaza. The parade is immediately followed by the official tree lighting in Corpening Plaza, which is sponsored by the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership.

The parade features more than 100 entries from local businesses, non-profit groups and schools, along with the marching bands from every Forsyth County public high school and, of course, Santa. Entries are eligible for the competitions for Best Float (business), Best Float (non-profit), Best Marching Band and the Holiday Spirit Award

for the best walking group.

The Winston-Salem parade is one of the only Triad-area parades that takes place after dark. Entries are illuminated with festive light displays. The trees along Fourth Street are lined with Christmas lights, and the city’s Moravian Star-inspired street lamp decorations afford the parade

route a view that can only be found in Winston-Salem. To learn more about the parade, visit www.wsparade.org.

Greensboro Holiday Parade

By Jennifer KellyThe Greensboro Holiday Parade has been a downtown tradition for over 37 years. In 2000, five organizations (Downtown Greensboro, Inc., the Greensboro Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Greater Greensboro Merchants Association, The Bryan Foundation, and the City of Greensboro) approached the Greensboro Jaycees with a vision to revitalize the parade, showcase our downtown area, and bring back the crowds that our City’s parade once drew. The Jaycees accepted the challenge, and with the generous sponsorship of those 5 organizations, we were successful in bringing the state’s first giant balloon parade to Greensboro on December 9, 2000. With beautiful blue skies overhead, 35,000 people came to watch as large Macy’s style balloons,

professional floats, drill teams, and the area’s best high school marching bands paraded down the streets of downtown. Now the parade averages over 90,000-100,000 people annually. Come out and enjoy the festivities!

The Jaycees’ Christmas Cheer project is also in its 24th year and has become an essential part of the holidays for the more than 100 volunteers that make it possible. The Jaycees partner with the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club to identify 60 children facing economic hardship or other family issues. Christmas Cheer raises enough funds to take each child shopping at a local Target store. The children each get to meet Santa before heading to Airbound Trampoline Park for an

afternoon of fun and games.

The service project is dear to current and past Jaycees, and relies on the support of countless local businesses. For instance, this year both Lone Star Steakhouse and Five Below offered proceeds from special shopping days to Christmas Cheer. Several independent coffee shops team up for A Cup of Christmas Cheer, and will

also donate a portion of proceeds to the project. Donations directly to Christmas Cheer are tax deductible. For more information and a Cup of Christmas Cheer schedule, visit www.wsjaycees.org/christmascheer.

Get Your PC Ready for 2015 in 3 StepsIt can be tough to keep up on PC maintenance in our fast-paced business world, but a little effort here and there can go a long way toward preventing headaches down the road that are much more time consuming. PC cleanup schedules may vary throughout the year, but one time in particular that is a great opportunity to get things under control is the end of the year. Let’s talk about some winter cleaning habits that will put your technology in great shape for next year. There are three steps toward doing this: cleaning, archiving, and planning.

PC CleaningWe can accumulate a lot of emails and files over the year that we didn’t want to delete at the time. This is a good opportunity to sit down and go through them. What ones are you unlikely to use that you could easily do without?Go through your junk email, empty your trash, and remove unnecessary items from your Desktop, Downloads, and Temporary Internet Files. Depending on your web browsing habits, clearing the Temporary Internet Files or browser cache can sometimes free up a surprising amount of space and make your browser run better.Doing a hard drive defrag can sort clustered files and help your system find things more quickly, as well. It can take awhile to complete a defrag, so it’s a good idea to pick a time you won’t need your PC awhile to initiate, then come back to it later.

File ArchivingCreate folders for 2014, both on your PC itself and in your email. (If you have not done this before, take everything from 2013 and before and put it into a “Previous Years” folder.) You can then go through your documents and other folders to put files you won’t use regularly away so they can be easily found later. But they’ll be out of your way in your day-to-day, helping both you and your PC operate smoothly. Same goes for email. Go through old messages and either delete them or move them to the 2014 folder so your primary inbox is clean. It’s also a good idea to run a complete system backup and archive a copy on a flash drive or external hard drive. Put this copy in a secure place such as a safe deposit box.Planning

Your technology plan should include everything you’re doing now as well as any changes that you expect to make to your routine.Do you want to get a new laptop, or maybe a tablet? Will that make your current technology redundant? Will making this change alter your maintenance schedule or change the process of how you handle and create data? Will you have data that needs to be transferred? Knowing the answers to these things in advance will make the transition far smoother, keeping both your personal life and your business technology running efficiently and reliably.
