Anyone in South Bristol wanting to drop a size this December is in luck because the Whitchurch evening and Hengrove morning groups are home to a consultant target slimmer – and she wants to share her weight loss secrets. Sarah Bryant lost 2st 7lbs with Slimming World 5 years ago and has maintained her inspirational weight loss ever since. Now Sarah runs her own two groups helping others to lose weight. She joined Slimming World as a member in September 2009 and slimmed down in just 9 months: "My weight was affecting my health and my self-confidence and I knew I needed to make a change. Joining Slimming World was the best decision I’ve ever made – not only did I lose my weight for good but I got a brand

new career that I love too." The 45 year old lost weight following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, which encourages slimmer's to lose weight without ever going hungry by filling up on healthy foods like fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, fish and fat-free dairy. She says: "It’s too generous to be called a diet. Right from day one I loved the flexibility of being able to choose from hundreds of healthy foods, without having to weigh or measure my portions. I still eat the same way now and it’s been easy to maintain my weight loss because Slimming World has helped me to learn how to make healthier choices that I can build into my life in the long term. It fits in perfectly with my family because we all enjoy the same meals, and even when we eat out there’s always something I can have and stay on track." "Before Slimming World I’d tried every which way to lose weight on my own and never really had much success. It’s a big thing to admit that you can’t do it by yourself and I was really nervous about" Anyone’s welcome to join one of our groups, and if you would like to find out more about becoming a Consultant yourself call Sarah for more information on 07879 443888 or visit www.slimmingworld.com.

Nearly three quarters of British people give money to charity every month in 2014, shows a new report. This news comes as no surprise to Direct Local. Last month we had a special feature on Children In Need, which went on to raise tens of millions of pounds in just one day and counting. Generous people in the UK come up with cash again and again when faced with those in greater need. The World Giving Index 2014 report, which came last month, named us as the second most giving nation in Europe, after Ireland. Sir Bob Geldof, the man behind the new Band Aid single featuring One Direction, said “I love living in this country at

moments like this,” going on to say the UK “led the world” in this form of charity campaigning. The Do They Know It‟s Christmas? Single, which is raising money for the Ebola crisis, topped the iTunes chart within an hour of going on sale. “Within four or five minutes we had a million quid, and the demand was so great that The iTunes site crashed due to the incredible demand.” said Sir Bob.

The Ebola crisis has killed more than 5,000 people in west Africa and Unicef said about 7,000 children had been orphaned. A video for the song was shown on ITV‟s X Factor just after the launch last month. The track can be downloaded at a cost of 99p. A CD version, costing £4, is available in the shops now.

As competition increases, charities are challenging traditional fundraising, resource exchanges and volunteering models, to engage more people in the giving of time, skills, money and resources to gain the biggest possible impact. Text fundraising has been used by various charities as a quick, easy way to raise money. During the recent England versus Scotland football game, there was an emergency television appeal to help Ebola victims. Viewers were able to donate £5 by texting the word „KIT‟ to 70333 with all donations going to Unicef‟s Ebola appeal. The UK Government said it would match the donations made during the game up to £5million. Chancellor George Osborne has agreed to take no tax from the Band Aid single, so every penny will go to help the charity effort.

The celebrity factor has helped many charities reach new audiences, and high profile bands such as One Direction have lent their support to various charity appeals in 2014. Most notably the BBC‟s Children In Need and Band Aids Do They Know It‟s Christmas? The BBC‟s Children In Need appeal broke all records on the night by raising more than £32.6 million. Presenter Terry Wogan said “I am thunderstruck, astounded and just astonished.” Recently, the ceramic poppy display began to be taken down at the Tower Of London. There were 888,246 flowers planted to represent those killed in World War One. Each poppy was sold for £25, raising more than £22 million.

Light Up Your Life!

Sensors, Smartphones and Serious Savings

As we come into winter, we start to need

more light in our homes both day and night.

There seemed little new in the lighting

market for many years. This has all changed

now and from energy saving and long life to

remote control, the technology has come out

of the dark ages.

The most obvious change in lighting is the

end of incandescent bulbs and the arrival of

low energy lighting. While early CFL

(compact fluorescent) bulbs were pretty

horrible and couldn't be dimmed. Todays

models are far nicer and can even be bought

with remote controls to dim and brighten

them.

The big news though, is the rise of LED.

Light-emitting diodes aren’t just incredibly

cheap to run; because they don't get as hot as

other bulbs, they are much more versatile.

They’re already a common sight in car head-

lights, and you can replace most of your

houses incandescent bulbs with LED’s for

relatively little cash - including halogen

downlighters, which were previously

difficult and expensive to replace with

LED’s.

When you combine LED’s with sensors,

things start getting interesting. For around

£12 you can get LED motion detectors,

which light up stairs and other potential

hazard areas and an LED in an external

motion-sensing security light will give you

the same peace of mind as before, but

without the enormous energy drain.

As technology gets smaller and cheaper, it

also gets smarter. Wouldn’t it be great if your

lighting linked into your wireless network

and could be controlled by your phone?

That’s already available: Philips Hue

light bulbs do just that… Enabling you to

change both brightness and colours - so you

might use a gently brightening yellow glow

to wake you in the morning, or point at a

photo to get the lighting to match its colours.

It’ll be a while before such technology is

everyday affordable though - a starter pack

will currently set you back £179 for one

controller and three bulbs. In the future every

household will be able to control their

lighting in this way.

If you like the idea of motion sensors, light

sensors or timers for your lighting, but would

rather not shell out for the expensive

smartphone kits, a simple but effective

motion and sound sensing light switch will

set you back less then £10.

The smartphone compatible hardware may

have the wow factor, but lower tech options

won’t give your wallet the ‘ow’ factor.

For Your Families Sake…

Don’t Wait To Make A Will

Todays increasingly complicated family

structures make writing a will more

important then ever before. There are many

more litigation cases, where an individual’s

failure to leave clear instructions is causing

family heartache for all concerned.

What many couples don’t realise is that if

you live together without formalising your

relationship through marriage or a civil part-

nership and you die intestate, your estate

could go to other relatives, rather than a be-

reaved partner. And, if no relatives can be

found, then the Treasury receives ALL the

money! Not only that, but given the rising

number of second and third marriages and

the likelihood of different children from dif-

ferent relationships, it’s imperative that fami-

lies take steps to formalise their will arrange-

ments, and ensure that ensure that everyone

is properly taken care of.

Many legal disputes centre around poorly

written wills. For example, if an individuals

will simply refers to leaving an estate to his/

her children - without being specific about

who those children are - then it leaves open

the possibility of a claim from other, previ-

ously unknown children. There has even

been cases where, after someone has died,

another child who is perhaps the result of a

secret relationship, has come forward to

make a claim.

The second (or third) marriage scenario can

also create friction between the different par-

ties. While children from a first marriage

may expect benefit when a parent dies, very

often there will be a second spouse who is

allowed to remain in the marital home for her

lifetime. A widow may well have been left

the property, but this is of little use if she

doesn't have a sufficient income to be able to

stay there.

With negotiation through an experienced

solicitor, an amicable solution can usually be

found, which enables both parties to benefit.

But it would have been great deal easier, and

cheaper, if the arrangements had been talked

through with a will writing expert in the first

place. Making a well-written and thought out

will is the only way to ensure your wishes

will be carried out to your instructions.

How To Avoid A Digital Disaster

Over Christmas, digital products will be one

of the biggest attractions when it comes to

buying presents for your friends and family.

These days, we’re doing more and more

things digitally: our holiday snaps sit on hard

discs, our music is often in MP3 or on our

phone and we are more likely to download

films as to buy them on discs. This is all

great when our digital world is working

Perfectly, but how do you make sure it stays

that way?

Protecting your digital world falls into three

key categories : protection of your valuable

data, protection from online threats and

protection from physical damage.

Protecting the hardware is the easy bit. Surge

protectors can prevent nasty spikes in the

electricity supply, which can in turn cause

damage, and if you have a laptop and your

have to work in a public area, you can buy a

Kensington Lock to secure it to something

heavy… Make sure of course that you have a

password on your computer!

Protecting your valuable information and,

music, videos and photos is easy too. No

matter how careful you are, digital products

can and do break. Every hard disc will wear

out eventually. That’s why it’s really

Important to keep back up copies of anything

important. You can do this in several ways,

such as using an online cloud service such as

skydrive.live.com, by burning to DVD or by

copying to an external hard drive. Major

companies such as Apple and Samsung also

have their own cloud back up services, and

can be set to back up your phone or tablet.

It is also worth remembering too, that

services such as Facebook wont help you if

you accidently delete or damage your online

photo libraries; once again make sure that if

it’s important, you have more than one copy

in case of disaster.

The other issue to worry about is ‘malware’,

which is software designed to do nasty

things. Sometimes malware spies on you,

trying to obtain your passwords and other

details; or it might just damage files or slow

your computer to a crawl. The good news is

that it’s relatively easy to avoid. Windows 7

and 8 both have firewall software, which can

prevent nasties getting in, and they also assist

you by giving warnings, so you can avoid

most malware. Don’t open unsolicited email

attachments from people you don't know.

Don’t let fake emails from your bank fool

you - your bank will NEVER send you

emails requesting your private details.

Keeping your digital world safe isn't

difficult, time consuming or expensive, but

it’s worth doing. If disaster strikes, you’ll be

glad you did.

With winter temperatures arriving across the UK, now is an important time to feed the wild birds visiting your garden. While food shortages can happen all year round, winter can be especially bad for the UK’s birds. With frost on the ground and bare trees and bushes, birds can often struggle to find enough food to see them through winter. At this time of year birds need high-fat foods which help give them energy and build their fat reserves. There are lots of ways you can feed wild birds. Bird tables, ready-made food blocks or fat balls, hanging peanut feeders and even homemade snacks are all popular inexpensive choices. In extreme weather you should try to put out food twice a day if lots of birds visit your garden.

Why not make your own fat balls using the leftover fat from your Sunday roast? Let the fat cool, then add some mixed bird seed and chopped peanuts, mixing thoroughly. Pour the mix into an empty yoghurt pot then let it harden in the fridge. Once completely set, push out (like an ice lolly). These can be put on bird tables or into feeders.

Did You Know?

There are 259 species

of wild bird that live in

the UK or visit

regularly!

A Unique Opportunity To Invest In A Future Champion

Josh Day is a professional paint sprayer and motorcy-cle racer from Cirencester, Gloucester. Josh competed in the North Gloucester Road Racing Club Road Racing Championships in the 2007 season. This was his first ever race season - no motocross, no mini mo-to… No prior race experi-ence whatsoever. Despite this, he finished 13th in the Open 600cc Championship and 2nd in the Open Novice Championship. These re-sults were achieved on his standard Yamaha R6 road bike, with the only modifica-tions to race fairings and tyres. Josh was determined to progress quickly in his racing career and so, still on his 2006 Yamaha R6 bike, he entered himself for the first few rounds of the 2008 season Met-zeler National Superstock 600 Championship. His plan was sim-ple; see what level he could jump to during the first few rounds of the national championships, then complete the year gaining valua-ble experience.

But plans sometimes go awry. What actually happened would be beyond even Josh‟s wildest dreams. A number of top ten fin-ishes, along with a podium finish at Oulton Park meant that Josh finished the season in 13th posi-tion overall. Commitment, Drive & Passion

As well as riding in the Metzeler National Superstock 600 Champi-onship in 2008, Josh was also making appearances at club level with NG Road Racing. The Open 600cc Championship was some-thing Josh was really keen to win, but other commitments allowed him only to compete in 8 races. Even knowing that he couldn‟t complete the season, his passion and natural talent for racing shone through, and he came out with four victories, and three 2nd posi-tions. He finished the season 3rd in the final championship stand-ings. 2009 saw Josh again entered into the extremely competitive Met-zeler National Superstock 600 Championship. With Successful pre-season testing, the outlook was promising. Brands Hatch played host to the first race of the season, and Josh qualified well,

A Unique Opportunity To Invest In A Future Champion

only to be penalised with a ride through penalty for a jump-start while running in second place. The final results revealed that Josh still managed to finish in 13th position from 38 riders. Well aware that he had the pace to run at the front of the race, in the next round at Oulton Park, Josh was running in 3rd position only to have his race cut short after being taken out of the race by another rider on the first lap. The next round took him back to Donington Park where illness hampered his winning chances, he still managed to secure 8th position. A Test Of Dedication

Over the next few rounds his dedi-cation was put to the test. Due to technical problems he missed the next three rounds. This meant he was unable to secure any valua-ble points and make headway on the overall placing. Racing fit, Josh returned to Croft and it was obvious that he was aiming to win both points and his confidence back. This he did by coming 12th, and by Silverstone he was running at the front again, and finished the race in an unbe-lievable 6th place.

Champion & Record Breaker

Still passionate about road racing, and still dreaming of winning the NG Road Racing 600 Champion-ships, Josh juggled and coordi-nated all his other race commit-ments and managed to compete in 12 out of the 14 rounds during the 2009 season. It paid off. With an impressive 11 wins, Josh took the title for the 600 Championship 2009. Josh entered the 2010 Metzeler National Superstock 600 Champi-onship. It was undoubtedly Josh‟s year. Seven pole positions, 3 wins and breaking two lap records at both Snetterton and Thruxton - this was just the start. Some rac-es saw him leading with over 9.8 seconds over the rest of the field and at the final round at Oulton Park, Josh finally secured victory and took the Championship title. Today Josh still holds the fastest ever lap ever recorded for Brands Hatch, Thruxton and Knockhill circuits. Although these times were set in qualifying and not in the race. 2011 was to be a whole new ad-venture for Josh. He said hello to a whole new race championship.

Josh entered the 2011 MCE British Superbike Series, riding an Evo Kawasaki ZX1DRR. Although he hadn‟t ridden a 1000cc machine before , Josh‟s natural talent was still evident. Unfortunately, Josh‟s team were experiencing technical issues at the start of the Evo Championship, which meant he had to sit out the first 2 races. Riding Out The Rough With The Smooth

Undaunted, Josh waited until the team had resolved the issues. At Oulton Park Josh managed a top 3 Evo finish. But his bad luck didn't stop there. With a nail biting four rounds to go, the team he was riding for collapsed. Josh only managed 9 races out of the 26 available. With 23 riders in the series, this meant his overall standing was 15th.and now without a team. It is a testament to Josh‟s tal-ent, ability and determination, that within days he was pre-sented with and took up a rare opportunity to fill in for an in-jured rider in another team at the British Supersport Champi-onship.

This challenge covered the final 4 meetings of the season and included getting used to a brand new bike. With only a day for testing at Mallory Park, it was straight over to Cadwell Park, where Josh got to grips with the Su-persport bike. The 2nd outing on the bike was back at Don-ington Park and Josh skilfully managed to put the bike on the front row. Even though he had only competed in 4 rounds of the season, he finished the British Supersport Champion-ship against 36 riders in 21st position. New Adventures, New Bike

In 2013 Josh was chosen to ride the Be Wiser Kawasaki ZX1OR in the National Super-stock 1000 Series. The Be Wiser Kawasaki Team have been around the Superbike paddock for several years with great success. The British Superbike organis-ers for this year banned all foreign testing, which many

Champion 2010

teams took advantage of be-cause of the guaranteed weather. The organisers deemed the foreign circuits too dangerous and too costly for a lot of the teams involved. This obviously had an effect on the 2013 testing programme, and Josh like many other riders who had joined new teams with new bikes, meant they would start the season with limited valuable pre-season track time. With approximately 60 riders trying to qualify for only 30 grid positions, things were very close and lots of riders were unable to make qualification. Josh, however qualified in all of the 12 rounds for the sea-son. He had some great top 10 results, including a 4th position at Donington Park with the World Superbike Series. Josh finished the 2013 season at Brands Hatch with a fastest second day qualification 1st. He was also fastest in free practice and managed to finish the race in 6th place. Josh has now formed a new racing team in partnership with Bristol‟s Ruby Scaffold-ing and is excited to an-nounce the new team - „Ruby Racing‟.
