POLISI IAITH Nôd yr ysgol yw hyrwyddo i’r graddau mwyaf posibl, ddatblygiad dwyieithog pob disgybl. Mae yn y polisi bwyslais ar integreiddio’r dysgwyr Cymraeg i gymdeithas Gymreig yr ysgol gynted ag y bo modd. Anelir at sefyllfa lle y gall pob disgybl drafod y gwahanol bynciau mewn dwy iaith, a hyn yn ei dro yn atgyfnerthu dealltwriaeth y plentyn o’r pynciau eu hunain.

Cymraeg fel pwnc Disgwylir i bob disgybl astudio Cymraeg hyd at ddiwedd blwyddyn 11, a sefyll yr arholiad priodol, iaith gyntaf neu ail iaith ar derfyn y cwrs.

    (b) Disgyblaeth Mae’r drefn ddisgyblaeth yn seiliedig ar bolisi lle mae pob athro yn gyfrifol am ymddygiad ei ddosbarth ei hun, ond, os oes angen, gellir cyfeirio disgyblion i sylw’r arweinydd cyfnod neu aelod o’r UDR. Mewn rhai achosion o gamymddwyn cedwir plentyn i mewn fel cosb, ond rhoddir manylion llawn i rieni ymlaen llaw os yw’n fwriad cadw disgyblion yn yr ysgol ar ôl 3.15 p.m. Mae gan y Prifathro hawl i atal disgyblion rhag mynychu’r ysgol am unrhyw reswm a ystyrir yn ddigonol am gyfnod hyd at 45 diwrnod ysgol mewn blwyddyn addysgol. CAREERS EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Ysgol Dyffryn Nantlle 2014 / 15

    9

A programme of Education and Guidance in Careers is prepared in the school as part of the Welsh Government’s statutory framework linking education with the world of work, as well as the framework for Personal and Social Education. The programme helps our pupils to develop the knowledge and skills that will enable them to make the best use of their capabilities in learning and work throughout life. It enables our students to nurture the skills to find the necessary information and use it correctly, to be realistic about their abilities and their personal aspirations, and to make knowledgeable decisions and plans about their future. The instructions offer the pupils a chance to review their work, to set new targets and to note new achievements. We place an emphasis on guidance, fairness, confidentiality and accessibility – we are confident that we reach these important criteria in full. An annual programme is prepared for years 9 to 11 with a special programme called ‘Into the Future’ for years 12 and 13. The latter is presented in the form of a graduated programme, integrated into the PSE programme, and it also contributes to the wider school curriculum. As part of the provision, we ensure that all students, during their period in school, receive advice on making options decisions. Pupils will receive advice from the Careers Teacher in school as well as from a member of ‘Cwmni Gyrfa Cymru’. Pupils can gain access to KUDOS, CID and Pathfinder – Careers Software packages, to help with their decisions. At least one week of work experience is offered to pupils, a programme made up of mock interviews, attending an options day and an interview with the school’s Careers Advisor. A day of ‘Industrial Awareness’ is held annually for year 10 pupils as well as entrepreneurship workshops. In this context, we place a strong emphasis on the school’s relationships with industry and the local business community. We arrange a variety of work placements, with clear aims and purpose, ensuring an appropriate relevance to the student’s educational pathway. The school works closely with outside agencies such as ‘Gyrfa Cymru’, Colleges of Further Education and Universities, Training Agencies, Gwynedd Council, Communities First, and many other local employers. We also promote a strong relationship between the Careers Department, ‘Cwmni Gyrfa’ and parents. A number of meetings are arranged and there will be a Careers representative present at all parents meetings for Year 9, Key Stage 4 and Sixth Form pupils held at the school. SPORT Physical Education is important in the school’s curriculum from the point of view of health, fitness and leisure, and we offer the pupils many different experiences. The success of the individual pupil and teamwork are promoted and extra-curricular opportunities are substantial. During their time at the school a number of our pupils will represent the school in sporting fixtures or take part in outdoor activities at other schools or locations. If you do not want your child to take part in these extra curricular activities, please inform the Headteacher by letter. ASSESSMENT (i) Homework

The child’s progress is continuously assessed and one aspect of the assessment is homework, an essential element of each pupil’s educational programme. It entails various activities, including written work, learning work and research. Parents should familiarise themselves with the arrangement, and encourage their children with their work by looking in detail at the tasks recorded in The Liaison Book.

(ii) School Examinations / Tests Another aspect of the assessment is the internal examinations held during the year.

(iii) Reports Report / Profiles are presented to parents three times during the year, and parents will be given the opportunity to discuss the progress of their children with teachers at parent evenings.

LANGUAGE POLICY The aim of the school is to encourage, as far as possible, the bilingual development of each pupil. In the policy, emphasis is placed on integrating the Welsh learners into the naturally Welsh school community, as quickly as possible. We aim towards a situation where all pupils can discuss their various subjects in two languages, with this capability in turn reinforcing the pupil’s understanding of the subjects themselves. Welsh as a subject All pupils are expected to study Welsh up to the end of their eleventh year, and to sit the appropriate first or second language examination at the end of the course. Language of Communication Welsh is the natural language of communication in school, and morning assemblies and school functions are conducted mainly in Welsh. PASTORAL CARE The aim of the school’s pastoral system is to recognise a pupil’s whole character as well as to ensure his / her welfare, monitor behavior and general progress and also to offer career guidance.

    (a) Organisation

The pastoral system is based on the work of form tutors and key stage leaders. The form tutor is the child’s first point of contact, and the key stage leader will monitor each child’s progress, their effort and behaviour.

    (b) Discipline School discipline is based on a policy of every teacher being responsible for the conduct of his own class, but, if necessary, pupils can be referred to the key stage leader or to a member of the SMT. Detention is also used as a punishment for the more serious offences, but parents will be given full details of any impending detention, if it involves keeping pupils at school after 3.15pm. The Headteacher has the right to exclude pupils from attending school for any reason which he considers reasonable, for a period of up to 45 school days in an academic year. Parents have the right to appeal against the exclusion to the Chairman of the Governors and to the Local Education Authority. We always aim to promote good behaviour.

    (c) Lunch-hour arrangements. (i) The welfare of the pupils necessitates that mid-day meals must be: (a) a meal taken at home (but not years 7, 8 or 9); (b) a school meal, or (c) a packed lunch eaten in school.

(ii) Before a pupil may leave school during the day, permission must be obtained from the Headteacher or the Deputies. Parents should make a request in writing.
