TO THE VOTERS OF ROCKCASTLE COUNTY m| Forestry Notes by - S. Ronald Singer To'reword a well-known phrase, "a farm is a farm Is a farm". But just "what is a farm? Does land have to have live- stock, chickens,' and tobacco on it to be a farm? Last week I examined' the "farm" "of Charles S. Lewis up on Chestnut Ridge Road. To anyone passing by,- it Would ap- pear to be nothing more than an area of woodland. And they would be right, because this is a Tree Farm. Mr, Lewis and I examined his tree farm and mapped out areas of young pine stands that needed a thinning, areas of older pines and hardwoods that should* be projected frotn fire, areas that were bare and are going to be planted this spring and fall in poplar and pinel and several areas that were * not supporting proper growth Wore marked for s i t e preparation and replanting. All of t h i s - improvement work is being completed under the direction and help of the Service Forester, and with cost- sharing from the Mt. Vernon ASC office. j When Mr: Lewis has com- J pleted his improvement work j on his Tree Farm, little change [ will be visible from the road, j but *h*L trees will benefit from i his work s%d in just a few | years the overall -increase - of I tree height, size,.and value will i Mr. Lewis told me that he is not expecting to gain from this woodland improvement for himself, but he hopes that his granddaughter will when she gets ready to go to college. -This, he said, was worth plan- ning for. I agree "Wtth-him. J. W. (Pete) Hurd am a candidate for Jailer, subject to the action of the Re- publican Primary, Way 23. am 39-ycars old and a vtt- eran of World War Two. VFAST, AND RIGHT w • Lawn Care Important During Early Spring February may seem the wrong time of year to be think- ing about lawn care, but some things can and should be done now. according to N. R. Elliott, UK Extension horticulturist. If your Jawn was sown in bluegrass seed this past Sep- tember, late February is the time to apply fertilizer, so that ir wlll dissolve and the grass can use it before weeds start to germinate in lale spring. Use a good, high-grade, complete fertilizer, such, as 8-8-8 or 10- 6-4. he suggests. Apply at the rate of about 15 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Late February also is the second-best time to sow blue- grass seed. September is the recommended month, but, if you did not get j o u r lawn sown last fall, this is the best limp to do it. Usually. '4 to V4 pound of an extra good bluegrass seed should be sown on. each 1,000 square feel of lawn area. Planning your flower and shrub arrangement now, during the cold weather, can give you better looking grounds- next summer. You may want to change, the location' of some flowers, move some shrubs,'dis- card some old shrubs, or add new ones. Making plans now will help you be ready to make need 1^1 changes when the time tomes. lf*7the m a n y varieties of plants on the market" confuse you and and you need unbiased advise at no cost, sec your local county Extension agent. Forestry Notes by - S. Ronald Singer

T o ' r e w o r d a well-known phrase, "a farm is a farm Is a farm". But just "what is a farm? Does land have to have live-stock, chickens,' and tobacco on it to be a farm?

Last week I examined' the "farm" "of Charles S. Lewis up on Chestnut Ridge Road. To anyone passing by,- it Would ap-pear to be nothing more than an area of woodland.

All of t h i s - improvement work is being completed under the direction and help of the Service Forester, and with cost-sharing from the Mt. Vernon ASC office.

j When Mr: Lewis has com-J pleted his improvement work j on his Tree Farm, little change [ will be visible from the road, j but *h*L trees will benefit from i his work s%d in just a few | years the overall -increase - of I tree height, size,.and value will

i Mr. Lewis told me that he is not expecting to gain from this woodland improvement for himself, but he hopes that his granddaughter will when she gets ready to go to college.

-This, he said, was worth plan-ning for. I agree "Wtth-him.

Lawn Care Important During Early Spring

F e b r u a r y may seem the wrong time of year to be think-ing about lawn care, but some things can and should be done now. according to N. R. Elliott, UK Extension horticulturist.

If your Jawn was sown in bluegrass seed this past Sep-tember, late February is the time to apply fertilizer, so that i r wlll dissolve and the grass can use it before weeds start to germinate in lale spring. Use a good, high-grade, complete fertilizer, such, as 8-8-8 or 10-6-4. he suggests. Apply at the rate of about 15 pounds per 1,000 square feet.

Late February also is the second-best time to sow blue-grass seed.

You may w a n t to change, the location' of some flowers, move some shrubs,'dis-card some old shrubs, or add new ones. Making plans now will help you be ready to make need 1̂ 1 changes when the time tomes.

lf*7the m a n y varieties of plants on the market" confuse you and and you need unbiased advise at no cost, sec your local county Extension agent.
