Good News From Living Word
LIVING WORD
From the Vicar’s desk….. Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe it’s 2020. Do you make New Year’s resolution? Every January, millions of people begin their year with New Year’s resolutions. Losing weight, getting organized, exercising more, eating healthier, and managing finances better are some of the most common resolutions. This year I am taking on a new resolution. Each day I will give an encouraging, affirming statement, to someone new to me. Our current cultural climate is divided, mean spirited, and even hurtful. Words that tear down are tossed about daily. It seems as if we have lost social etiquette of the mouth. My resolution is to give words that “lift up” to a stranger each day. That stranger could be someone I run into at the drugstore, the train ride, or at work. I am so tired of the negative and derogatory slander making the news, I am committing to making a difference. The words from the Apostle Paul: Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything to-gether in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts... (Colossians 3:14-15a) My encouragement for you as we embark on 2020 is to be a difference! Start each day reciting a Psalm every morning for the next year. “Create in me a clean heart, O God; restore within me a sense of being brand new. Do not throw me far away from Your presence, and do not remove Your Holy Spirit from me.” (Psalm 51:10-11). In January we enter the church season of Epiphany with the main theme being Jesus is the light of the World. As God’s child, we too are little lights. Brothers and sisters, let your light in Christ shine! God’s blessings, Vicar Rachel

A Few Thank Yous
Dear Church friends,
Thank you for your generous Christmas gift! It was a thoughtful surprise and joy. I used it for some Christmas family fun over the holiday break. I am enjoying all that we do together as "church".
God's blessings!
Vicar Rachel
Dear Fellow Congregational Members ,
I would just like to thank everyone for their time and patience through the process of selling our physical space and continuing as a congregation “Going Forth and Sharing Christ in Our Community”. We may seem to be small, but we are mighty. Our congregation has continued to share Christ in our community not only by being a presence in the heart of Roslyn, but also by making meals for the homebound, opening our doors to the food cupboard, sharing our space with another congregation, and the list goes on. I know a year ago we were ready to close, but I believe God had another plan for us and we will be able to continue serving God and our community in the future.
If at anytime, anyone has questions, concerns or any comments to share, please know I am always available. As we continue through this process, please keep the congregation in your prayers.
Once again thank you for your time and patience. I look forward to Living Word continuing to serve God and our community.
Sharing in Christ
Gale Rowley Congregational Council President

January Events and Announcements
Annual Congregational Meeting
Our potluck luncheon and annual meeting will be held on Sunday January 19 (inclement weather date January 26) We come upstairs immediately after worship service to begin lunch,
followed by the meeting. We will also elect new council members at this meeting. Currently we do not have a full compliment of council members, and several members are constitution-ally required to exit council. We will have several openings up for election at the 2020 annual meeting. Please faithfully consider and pray about serving the parish in this capacity. If you are interested, please see Gale Rowley or another council member. Also, all year end reports are due to the church office by Sunday January 5, so that the annual meeting bulletin can be assembled and distributed on Sunday, January 12.

A Few Thoughts on New Years Resolutions and the 20s.
18 Totally Doable 2020 New Year’s Resolutions
1. Start your day with a life-giving Bible verse instead of scrolling your smart phone. Bonus points if you invite your friends to read with you! Tip: Charge your device away from your bed!
2. Be more generous with your smiles. They look good on you!
3. Ditch single use plastic. Small changes in everyday habits can have a big impact.
4. Delete one harmful word or phrase from your vocabulary and replace it with something more con-structive. Tip: Don’t forget to remove it from your thoughts about yourself, too.
5. Shop local when you can. It’s an easy way to support your community.
6. Eat more plant-based. Start small to make it easy and fun – try meat-free Mondays, or Veganuary, and slowly increase the number of plant-based items in your diet. Even being partly vegetarian or ve-gan is a great move for your health (and your wallet)
7. Whenever you can, give up your spot in line to the person behind you.
8. Stretch more. Drink more water. Be a healthy example in simple ways to those who look up to you.
9. Set a daily alarm on your phone to remind you to take a moment to pray for someone other than yourself. Bonus points for each time you text that person afterward to let them know.
10. Find a new way to compliment your spouse/significant other each day.
11. Regularly schedule time to take a walk, and pick up any trash you see along the way.
12. Whisper to your kids when you feel like yelling at them.
13. Bring in your neighbor’s trash can when you’re resetting your own. Or mow their lawn for them. Or double your recipe while you’re cooking and surprise them with dinner. You get it: be a good neighbor.
14. Test the boundaries of your comfort zone by trying something new. Baby steps are okay!
15. Read more. Join (or start!) a book club for accountability.
16. Make your mornings less hectic by encouraging your family to pick out clothes and pack bags the night before.
17. Put people’s birthdays in your calendar, and then make a point to shoot them a text on their special day.
18. Invite people over for dinner/game night/Bible study. Sometimes folks just need a place to gather.
Looking into the 2020s with 20/20 foresight? Here are a few fearless guesses about life in the near future. By Eric Zorn Looking ahead, I see the 2020s as a decade where many expectations will fall short. Drones won’t be delivering packages to our homes in 2029. Most cars won’t drive themselves on city and suburban streets. Cryptocurrencies like bitcoin won’t have tak-en over for conventional currency. Humans won’t have returned to the moon or head-ed to Mars. Football’s popularity won’t have waned significantly. (Continued next page)
One man’s opinion on the coming decade….What do you think? (an excerpt…)
7
G o o d N e w s F r o m L i v i n g W o r d
What Do YOU think the 20s will be like?
3D printers won’t be common household items 10 years from now. Virtual reality headsets won’t be a major source of delivery for entertainment and sports programming. AM radio and Facebook won’t have died, and telecommuting won’t have unclogged our highways. The vast majority of us won’t be wearing computing devices anywhere but on our wrists, augmented-reality glasses will be a niche product and “artificial intelligence” will still be a buzz phrase, not a meaningful reality. We won’t be whooshing from place to place in pneumatic tubes or on high-speed trains. In the next 10 years, we will have a woman president and at least one woman coaching a major men’s sports team. The term “openly gay” will become a relic of the bigoted past, like “woman doctor.” Advances in voice recognition and text-to-speech technology will come to allow digital as-sistants to perform many complicated research and transcription tasks that today require a keyboard and make it easier for motorists to keep their eyes on the road. Most cars and trucks will all but drive themselves on interstates and other divided, limited-access roadways, and overall vehicle fatalities will continue to fall. Despite the continued popularity of big-time football, a handful of notable colleges and hundreds of high school districts will drop the sport over health concerns. Greta Thunberg will win the Nobel Peace Prize. Congress will not impeach another president but will, on the signature of a Democratic president, create a “public option” for health insurance that will pave the way for still-unrealized universal coverage. Seven-day-a-week newspapers will disappear this decade for sure. Most retail stores will feature the cashierless automatic checkout technology now seen in Amazon Go stores. Phones in 2029 will offer more computing power and versatility than today’s desktop machines, which for nearly all users will become obsolete. As the world wakes up too late to the environmental crisis, renewable energy sources will supplant fossil fuels. Climate refugees — people fleeing lands made dramatically less habitable by increasing average temperatures and rising sea levels — will become a major international problem, fueling a continuing rise in ethno-nationalism. Technology, once seen as primarily a liberating social force, will become the prime enabler of tyrants. Facial and gait recognition, full control of siloed internet services, cheap tracking devices, ubiquitous tiny cameras and the ability to create “deepfake” videos that generate convincing alternate realities will allow dictators to crush dissent wherever it arises and will sorely tempt officials in democratic countries. The U.S. Supreme Court will go too far in restricting abortion rights and spark a political backlash that will lead to an expansion of abortion access in many states. Yet the courts and politicians will continue to block overhauls of gun laws, and mass shootings will continue to be common. Medical science will continue to make great strides battling cancer and heart disease but be frustrated in the fight against forms of dementia.

Hospitality Committee Report - January/February, 2020
We hope everyone had a wonderful and blessed Christmas. It is hard to believe that we are now entering the year 2020.
Please join us for our annual potluck lunch before the Annual Congregation Meeting on January 19, 2020 (snow date January 26). Bring a favorite dish to share. Lunch will begin im-mediately after the 9:30 a.m. church service. (The lunch and meeting should be finished in time for everyone to enjoy football playoff games, hopefully including the Eagles. As Nate would say: Go Eagles.) As of the writing of this article, the Eagles still have a chance.
It is not too early to mark your calendars for the Pancake Supper on Shrove Tuesday,
February 25 at 6 P.M. Be sure to invite your family and friends.
