Good News From Living Word

LIVING WORD

From the Pastor’s Desk…

Prayer is the foundation of the Christian life.

Without prayer, we have nothing.

But what is prayer? Why do we pray? What do we hope to accomplish by praying?

Too often, when people pray, they seem to be looking for something from God. They request things. To be sure, it’s good to feel comfortable coming to God with our wants, desires, and needs. We should do that. God wants us that from us. But prayer is so much more than a one-way communication line with God about what we’re looking to achieve for ourselves.

Prayer is a conversation with God. When you talk with a friend or a family member, do you always ask for something? Most people don’t. Most of our conversation with other people are back-and-forth exchanges. That’s what God is looking for from us when we pray. God wants us to commune with him through conversation…through prayer. We are to come to God with so much more in prayer than simply what we’re looking for from God. What would you think if every time someone spoke to you they were asking for something?!

Our conversations with God are to be borne out of familiarity and trust. We are to trust God above all things and people. God is the one who is always there fore us, and so we should trust that God will hear our prayers and answer. Just like other people who talk with us answer us when we speak to them, so we can expect God to answer us when we pray. God answers our prayers so much more faithfully than anyone else, though. God answers our prayers for the sake of his Son Jesus, whose prayers he also heard from the cross—forgive them, Father, for they know not what they are doing. Even in the midst of the worst possible thing imaginable, Jesus was in prayer to God, and his prayer was an outpouring of himself for our sake. Even in death, Jesus was faithful so that we might have faith in the promise of God to hear our prayer and to answer. For indeed—God did answer Jesus prayer. Three days later, he raised him from the dead and to that end, promises us through that same prayer to grant us eternal forgiveness. Jesus prayer was answered. And so too is our prayer answered.

Christians are to be in constant communication with God. We are to come to God with our wants, needs, and desires, but more importantly, we are to come to God with our whole lives. God shares in our joys, in our sorrows, and our in all parts of our lives. When we talk to him about what’s going on, we know that God is listening and that God will answer. We have seen that in Jesus and we see it in other ways in our lives. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective, and thanks be to God through Jesus Christ who makes us righteous to stand before the Lord!

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Daniel

Summer's Sweet Sound

On a cool day in September When the leaves are swirling ‘round I’d give anything to remember Summer’s sweet sound The cries of children playing, ever so sweet The rustling of trees swaying that friends climb to meet On a cool day in September When the kids are walking home, I’d give anything to remember, Summer’s sweet tone

With the rumble of summer storms, Turning the world green The blowing of winds warm, That makes every tree lean On a cool day in September When Winter is soon to be found, It’s hard to remember, Ever hearing Summer’s sweet sound

Church Bells

A minister was walking to church one morning when he passed one of his members working in his garden. "Can't you hear those bells calling you to church?" asked the minister. "Eh, what's that?" said the member. "Can't you hear those bells calling you to church?" "I'm afraid you'll have to speak a little louder!" said the member. "CAN'T YOU HEAR THOSE BELLS CALLING YOU TO CHURCH?!" shouted the minister. "I'm sorry," said the member, "I can't hear you because of those darned BELLS!" The Lord is My Shepherd A Sunday School teacher decided to have her 2nd grade class memorize Psalm 23, one of the most quoted passages in the Bible. She gave the children a month to learn the chapter. One little boy was excited about the task, but he just couldn't memorize the Psalm. Although he practiced and practiced, he could hardly get past the first line. The day came for the children to recite Psalm 23 before the congregation. The little boy was nervous. When his turn came, he stepped up to the microphone and proudly said, "The Lord is my Shepherd and that's all I need to know!"

Our Summertime Pack Activities continued with a sports day held at Roslyn School in July and a bike rodeo at the church’s parking lot in August. Our Cubmaster, Mr. Raggi also hosted a family picnic at his home in August where the Pack Committee did some planning for the new Scouting year.

Coming-up in September our first Pack meeting will be a Rain Gutter Regatta as a recruiting event, and in October our Pack meeting will have a special Halloween theme. Mrs. Miller, one of our Scouters (leaders), will be facilitating a First Aid course for adults in Fellowship Hall in October also.

In early November we will have a family camping outing to Musser Scout Reservation in Pennsburg. Our Pack will also be participating in the Ten Commandments Walk where we will learn about different communities of faith, and our Pack meeting theme will be Disabilities Awareness.

This year we will be accepting kindergarten age boys and girls into the new Cub Scout program called Lions. The national pilot program proved successful so The Boy Scouts of America is rolling-out the program nationwide.

The members of Living Word Lutheran Church, our Chartered Organization, are always invited to attend our Pack Committee meeting, where we plan our activities, held at 7:15 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month, and to attend our Pack meetings which are on the last Friday of the month at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Both meetings are held in Fellowship Hall.
