Dear Friends:

With only a week to go before the Labor Day weekend unofficially closes out the Summer season, I hope your Sum-mer months have been as full and as varied as have mine. From the perspective of being at the conclusion of Summer I am a mite dizzy from the speed with which the weeks and months have passed. It seems only yesterday that I was sharing with you our preparation for the annual Priest Retreat (which was in June) which was quickly followed by Deacon Michael’s and Deacon Daniel’s ordination to the Diaconate which segued into the first La Cena...and BAM-MMM....here we are staring at September! Perhaps it is similar to your own experiences when the child you once walked to the kindergarten classroom door is now driving off for their Senior year in High School and it suddenly hits you that an entire lifetime has come and gone?

Within the Bulletin during the past weeks we have run an article regarding ‘THE CHANGE IN POSTURE’ that most other parishes will be adopting as of this weekend. Being in a TEMPORARY/INTERIM Church, the change does NOT apply to us, but I have placed the article in the Bulletin so that you won’t be surprised if you visit neighboring parishes for Mass (making sure, of course, that you have still sent your Offertory envelope contribution to Santa Clara first or availed of Electronic Giving.) Eventually when we have constructed our own permanent Church, we will kneel...on padded kneelers...but for now, with moveable chairs and hard concrete floors, we will continue to stand, just like people do at Masses in St. Peter’s in Rome.

This weekend, Seminarian Cheeyoon joins me, along with about 30 or so Santa Clara couples, for a most unusual op-portunity afforded us by our relationship with Farmers & Merchants Bank...a day at the Polo Games in Santa Barbara. An invitation that was extended exclusively to all our PSA contributors as a way of expressing THANKS, the Polo games are pretty high end and not the usual Sunday experience for most of us, myself included. As the Carpentaria morning fog burns off, the morning begins with Mass being celebrated on the grass of the actual Polo field, followed by a personal tour of the stables and Polo grounds by members of the Walker Family (who own Farmers & Merchants bank) which culminates in a delicious catered lunch in the F&B Pavilion...followed by the actual Polo Matches...in-clusive of the midgame Divot Stomp (just like in Pretty Woman). The day comes to an end around 4pm, trophies are given, champagne is poured and everyone saddles up their Chevy’s, Fords and Jeeps for the return route home...with perhaps a stop over in LA for dinner or snacks. For Cheeyoon it will be a pleasant introduction to the INTENSE and varied DEMANDS of life here at Santa Clara.

Writing this on the Feast Day of Ignatius Loyola (Founder of the Jesuit Order) I am reminded that a number of people have commented, both pro and con, on the variety of articles I insert into our Bulletin from time to time. My effort is to demonstrate the diversity of issues and views regarding them out in the WORLD, beyond our Yorba Linda en-campment. In recent days I sent off to our Bulletin editor a few articles pertaining to Former-Cardinal Archbishop McCarrick, who in retirement is now facing the fruits of numerous allegations of sexual misconduct. My purpose is to keep before you the criminal frailties of some of the clergy...and the regrettable practice by other clerics to look the other way or not prosecute the crimes of their brothers. I have also reprinted the back and forth exchange between Fr. Reese, S.J. of America Magazine and Cardinal Dolan of New York, pertaining to ‘reflections on’ and ‘fallout from’ the recent Irish vote that removed Ireland’s abortion constitutional prohibition. My purpose is again to promote the free exchange of ideas, disputes, agreements and varied concerns on a wide variety of issues so that further conversation might ensue in your own world.

Speaking of ‘the world’, next weekend we will have representatives from The Disciples of Mary religious order present at all our weekend Masses as our MISSION SUNDAY-Mission Appeal outreach. Even though it will be the holiday weekend, please come with open hearts and minds (along with some extra cash in your pocket) so as to hear how we can be of help to those in need elsewhere in the world.

Don’t forget that our Parish MINISTRY FAIR is scheduled for the weekend of September 8th & 9th after all the Mass-es. Representatives from ALL our ministries, outreaches and social organizations will be present with information and INVITATION for you to add your skills, energy and enthusiasm to our Santa Clara endeavors. It is one thing to come to Mass weekly, receive Eucharist and go home...it is a FAR DIFFERENT experience to participate in making Santa Clara come to life and help serve our community!

In these final days of Summer Lisa Alonso and I have been at work in our outreach to solidify our guest speakers for our 2019 Good Friday Prayer Breakfast. With some extra prayers on your part for our success, I will hopefully have good news to share with you in the upcoming weeks...but even now, please make sure you mark your schedules with Good Friday, April 19, 2019 for your participation at our Good Friday Prayer Breakfast....at the Anaheim Sheraton Hotel (we were maxing out the Anaheim Hills Country Club for the past three years and needed to move.)

Finally, like a last wave good-bye or a final hug till next week, please know that you are loved. FKB

August 25-26, 2018Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

Joshua 24:1-18 Ephesians 5:2-32 John 6:60-69

In the same manner in which Labor Day ‘unofficially’ marks the conclusion of the SUMMER season, so this weekend brings to a close the August scriptural reflections on Eucharistic themes. Having spoken strongly over the past weeks of HIS BODY and HIS BLOOD being the source of eternal life, along with the necessity for us to EAT and DRINK of his flesh and blood, this week we hear of the disillusionment of ‘many of his disciples’ to the point that they left Jesus and ‘returned to their former ways of life.’ In the same manner that all DEEP relationships require commitment and devotion, so too our relationships with Jesus cannot remain at ‘casual acquaintance’ level if we are to grow and prosper within our faith-relationships. For all our devout professions of knowing Jesus, God is still a MYSTERY and how God moves and acts will confound us. Being able to perceive the grace of God in the most horrific of situations is an example of how hard it can be to be a disciple of Jesus. When Jesus asks us to PRAY for those who persecute us, to be loving to our enemies, this confounds us...we who feel justified in being judge, jury and executioner upon those we deem our foes, we can think of Jesus’ words as being silly and unreasonable. The Incarnation, the eternal WORD becoming flesh as a human, did not occur so as to bless our ways of living and treating each other...but RATHER, to call us beyond the lives and behaviors with which we have become comfortable. The Eucharistic food Jesus offers us in his flesh and blood is not to sustain us in a comfortable bubble but rather to allow us to see God’s GRACE within the changes and peculiarities of life that rattle and confound us. Knowing that God is entitled and free to interact with his creation in any manner he wishes, how has our frequent reception of Eucharist enabled us to break free of old prejudices or small-mindedness? Are we open to having God love those we do not? Are we open to sharing eternity with those our culture rejects, condemns and ridicules? Are we open to letting Eucharist CHANGE US? Or, if we find out that God is interested in having a relationship with EVERYONE...will we walk away, in search of a God of our own making?

With next weekend’s Labor Day holiday, our Summer sojourn comes to an ‘un-official’ end. Thank you for sharing these past Summer weeks, as well as this weekend, with our Santa Clara Community. Please keep our Santa Clara PSA participants suffering through the Santa Barbara Polo games in your prayers this weekend as they travel back and forth for this outing. Our September 15th LA CENA is drawing near...please make your reservations promptly as a wonderful way to bid adieu to the Summer of 2018. Lastly, please note our Parish Ministry Fair approaching on the weekend of September 8-9...a perfect opportunity for you to claim ‘pride of ownership’ by becoming more deeply involved in the life of Santa Clara. As the ‘formal’ Summer season prepares to slip away, please remember, you are loved. FKB

MINISTRY FAIR 2018On September 8th and 9th, we are having our Annual Santa Clara de Asis Ministry Fair in the Church Parking Lot. This is a great opportunity to find new ways for you to get more involved in your Parish. A representative from each Ministry and Parish Group ready to answer any questions you have for them. Please take the first step and plan to join us after Mass on Saturday, September 8th, or Sunday, September 9th.

BUNDLE SUNDAY -TIME TO CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSETS! A St. Vincent de Paul truck will be at Santa Clara on Sunday, September 23rd, to collect those still usable but unwanted items that are now taking up space in your house or garage. Start cleaning out now.

heart & soul MinistrySeptember 1st and 2nd is the Heart & Soul Ministry food collection for Immaculate Heart Parish. We are grateful for your generous response in August, which helped many more families make it through the summer. Out September collection is Labor Day weekend, which means some of our regular donors may be traveling. Please keep the Immaculate Heart families in mind when you shop for your own end-of-summer celebrations. Your donations of canned goods, cereal, dried pasta and rice, personal care items and household cleaning and paper products make a big difference in their lives. Expired food items and donations of clothing, shoes, toys, electronics and housewares are not accepted. Such items are thrown in the trash and not passed along to Immaculate Heart Parish.

Have you been thinking about becoming Catholic?

Then the Rite of Christian Initiation is for you!

One of the BIG things coming as we look ahead to Easter 2019, is welcoming those who wish to become Roman Catholic into our Faith. If you, a friend, or family member, who have been participating in our community for a while, and want to come forward and receive Eucharist with everybody else, and want to become Roman Catholic either through Baptism....(for those who are of no Christian faith)...or Profession of Faith..(for those who have already been Baptized into another Christian faith)...NOW is the time to call Mary Chavez, our Director of Adult Faith Formation at 714-970-7885 ext. 231 to sign up.

Please do not delay because those seeking to embrace the Catholic Church need to participate within the fullness of the RCIA process....after September 18th it will be too late.
