Every year we have new occurrences of one sort or other and this past month we
experienced a couple of Polar Vortexes. It is interesting how we add to our lexicon.
Your Chamber is gearing up for several events for this next month and utilizing the
services of Benedictine University. One of the graduate level MBA classes is
working with us to consult on a marketing plan for membership development. Sev-
eral board members met with two different groups of students regarding this pro-
gram through Professor Ann Fullmer’s graduate level marketing class. We look for-
ward to the results of their consultation at a presentation next month.
We will have two luncheons in the month of February, one at Benedictine University on February
20th as part of Lislepalooza which is a major event coordinated by the College of Business and the
other our Economic Forecast luncheon on February 27th at Oak Brook Hills Resort. The latter will
feature William Strauss, Senior Economist with the Federal Reserve Bank. It will be a multi-
chamber event with over 10 chambers participating. Table top sponsorships are available and there
will be over 200 people in attendance.
Lislepalooza will include a career fair and workshops in the morning followed by a luncheon fea-
turing a presentation on the new College of Business building which will be constructed in the near
future and later a Business after Hours.
These events will follow our premier event held on February 7th, the Lisle Chamber Dinner Dance,
Dancing with the Chamber Stars. This hugely popular community event includes a dance off
between chamber member/professional dance couples, silent auction, one hour open bar followed
by a reduced price cash bar, dinner with complimentary wine, and entertainment. This year the
theme is Luau in Lisle and will feature a Hawaiian dance troupe. If you haven’t made your
reservations yet you still have time to do so. This is the social event of the year in Lisle and you
will have many opportunities to meet other Chamber members.
The Government Affairs committee will be represented at a legislative summit on February 4th in
Springfield by myself, Paula Gleason of Neighbors of Lisle, and Kim Brondyke from Senator
Michael Connelly’s office. Every year we gain valuable information about issues that affect you
our members. We will be giving an update at a later date.
In January we had two luncheons with updates on local government, the first was a State of the
County presented by Chairman Dan Cronin and the second was Mayor Broda’s State of the Village
address. Congratulations to Boy Scout Troop 108 for receiving the Community Service Award for
their volunteer efforts during the April flood. Finally I want to give a special thank you to Dr.
Neeta Bhushan of Lisle Dental Center for a fabulous Business After Hours on January 29th. Don’t
forget your Valentine on February 14th and hope to see you soon!

I cannot believe January is already in our rear view mirror! We
had a busy January, and February looks just as exciting! If you
haven’t gotten your tickets yet for our annual event, Dancing
with the Chamber Stars, what are you waiting for? This event is
a first-class, exciting evening with hundreds of people and a lot
of laughs. If you’ve never been, I encourage you to give it a
try. You will soon see why so many people come back year
after year!
We have a Business After Hours on February 19th at Health Source of
Lisle. These are fantastic opportunities to network and gain new contacts and
business. Benedictine College of Business is hosting “Lislepalooza” on February
20th as well. We close out February with a Multi-Chamber Luncheon & Economic
Forecast. William Strauss, Senior Economist from the Federal Reserve Bank of
Chicago will be presenting. Check out the Chamber Calendar for more
opportunities to grow yourself and grow your business.
People aren’t born knowing how to run effective boards, which is why I was
excited to attend the Multi-Chamber Strategic Board Development & Orientation
breakfast on January 29th. I was very pleased with the wealth of information we
all walked away with! There is homework to do, but this is homework I actually
can’t wait to spend some time on. If you are currently on a board or an executive
director of an organization, register to attend the second half of the series on
March 26th. You’ll be glad you did!
Effective Chambers have active members participating and networking at the
events and getting involved in committees and events. We want to hear from our
Chamber Members! You joined. You are a stockholder in this
organization. What would you like to see happen in 2014? What would help to
get your business more involved, networking and getting the most this Chamber
has to offer? I genuinely want to know and would welcome your ideas. Send
them to me at [email protected]
I am looking forward with expectancy to an exciting year for Lisle Chamber of
Commerce. We have some great momentum started – let’s capitalize on it
together!

Mayor Joseph Broda, presented his State of Vil-
lage address, January 16, 2014 at the Hilton Lisle/
Naperville. Mayor Broda discussed the flood of
2013, saying it was the worst flooding in 35 years
that he has ever seen in Lisle. He spoke about
how the police and fire department and volunteers
helped the families that were displaced. He
gave the Community Spirit award to the Boy
Scouts Troop 108 for their dedication to helping
the families of the flood. He went on to announce the new village board trustees, Tony Carballo,
Rob Getz, Brad Hettich, and Bob Mandel. Police Chief Jim Kosatka retired from the police depart-
ment after 34 years and Mary Lou Kalsted retired after working with the village for 32 years. New
Police Chief, Dave Anderson and Marilyn Sucoe is the new storm Water administrator. Mayor
Broda said the new event in the Village last Septem-
ber, the Lisle Ale Fest will be again presented by the
Lisle Area Chamber. Last year was a sellout, the
chamber had to turn away attendees. Mayor
Broda looks forward to continued development that
further enhances the Village and increases resident
participation in Village government. Mayor Broda
was elected as Mayor in 2001. He has lived in the
Village for 30 years and has been on the Village
Board since 1986.
David Schreier, and Joe Skvara were the speakers at the Multi-Chamber Breakfast on January 29,
2014 at WheatStack in Lisle. Strategic Board Development and orientation was the first part of a
two part series. A presentation about seeking solutions for organization leadership was the topic.
Each session conveys valuable information and can be attended individually or as a series. The
next presentation will be a full hot breakfast buffet at Wheatstack, March 26, 2014 at 7:30 am.

Despite the cold weather many chamber members attended the
January Business after Hours at Lisle Dental Center on Main Street in
downtown Lisle. Dr. Neeta Bhushan is a General, Family and Cos-
metic dentist and she opened her practice five years ago. In addition
to Dr. Bhushan are Dr. Asra Ali and Dr Aneeqa Malik also General,
Family and Cosmetic Dentists, and implant specialist Dr. Irbad
Chowdhury. The Lisle Dental Center does offer a chamber member to
member special of a complimentary whitening tray with exam,
x-rays, and cleaning.

years. In addition to her contributions as an Ambassador, Julie has worked on the
Dinner Dance committee, the 5K committee, the Golf Outing committee, and is Chair
of the Scholarship committee. She enjoys being an Ambassador for the Lisle Chamber
because she has the opportunity to work with great people throughout the village in all lines of busi-
ness.
Julie resides in Green Trails in Lisle with her husband Lee. She enjoys spending her free time with
her three children and seven grandchildren. In addition, Julie loves gardening, reading, and getting
involved in the community.

Naper Settlement receives $15,000 grant from Tellabs Foundation
Naperville, IL — Naper Settlement received a $15,000 grant from the Tellabs Foundation to
support the “Voices of the Past: The Underground Railroad in Northern Illinois” program. The grant
will fund 10 new junior high schools/middle schools with a high number of low-income students to
participate in the program.
“We are grateful for Tellabs Foundation’s support of Naper Settlement’s program that
brought history to life for more than 2,000 students last year,” President and CEO Mike Krol said.
“Because of the Foundation’s support, we can offer the program to 10 new schools that have not
been able to afford the experience.”
“I am very happy to see that the Tellabs Foundation is continuing our partnership in bringing
unique educational experiences to the students of Naperville, and other Illinois communities,” said
Chris Birck, who serves on the Tellabs Foundation Finance Committee, and is a past chairman of the
Naperville Heritage Society Board of Directors. “The ‘Voices of the Past: The Underground Railroad
in Northern Illinois’ program is an exceptional teaching tool, in that it brings an important history
lesson to life, for our students.”
WIB starts the New Year financially smart with finan-
cial advisors Carol Anderson, Anderson Wealth Advi-
sors, and Valeria Janke, Waddell & Reed. They talked
about the importance of developing a clear under-
standing of your overall finances. It is more than plan-
ning to save for your child’s education, or expanding
your business, or saving for retirement. Financial plan-
ning helps you focus on your goals and on how to
achieve them. Carol and Val discussed the fact that
women are living longer than most men, and women
should prepare for this possibility. Approximately
40% of people will need long-term care after age 65; therefore, they suggest considering a policy
for long-term care that provides services and support in the home and/or nursing home.
