SAMFORD LIONS

“SCUTTLEBUTT”

Edition 5

Christmas 2018

President – Kristen McKinnie

Editor – John Burnham

This is the fifth edition of the Samford Lions Scuttlebutt for Lions Year 2018-2019. Any and all contributions for upcoming issues would be gratefully received and most appreciated.

By its very nature this is a working document of the past, present and future activities of the Samford Lions Club, with a bit of humour thrown in for good measure.

It will only be as good as the membership make it!

**************************************************

Editor’s Edge

I will be looking for eager volunteers in the New Year, to tell their story for future editions of the Scuttlebutt. Before I ask you to be a “willing” volunteer please be proactive and come and tell me you would be happy to tell the other members your story; even the juicy bits. I’m sure there are some interesting stories out there

In the meantime I hope you all have a

Happy Christmas and a Wonderful and Safe New Year!

Kristen’s Creed

Hi all,

Here we are almost at the end of the year, Christmas is only 18 days away at the time of writing, (that’s enough to scare us all), and I am almost 6 months into my stint as President. Thanks to all members, especially Bob, David R and Bronwyn for their patience and guidance as I make my way through the year.

November has been another busy month, with extra BBQ’s at the Samford Centennial celebrations and Arana Hills library and another extra BBQ at Bunnings later this month, which will help to refill the community account again, and fly the Samford Lions flag in the community.

Alice has been busy getting the Children of Courage off the ground. This is a great venture to encourage children and their families who are experiencing difficulties or hardships, either temporarily or permanently.

The maintenance of Kupidabin Park continues with another working bee, organised by Stewart. Thanks for all the hard work in the park, Stewart.

The Lions club of Warner is now officially up and running thanks to the team of John B, Alice and Bronwyn. They held their induction last month and it’s great to see a new Lions club up and running. We will be continuing to support them for some time to come. At the current time, they have 14 enthusiastic members who have hit the ground running and they only need another 6 to be chartered.

Once again, the Lions Christmas cakes are popular, with Frank coordinating their sales and we should sell record numbers again this year.

I have been trying to get a few social events organised during my tenure as President. Social activities are great for club morale and a great way to build a strong club. We have had 2 social nights for the 5th Thursday so far this year. We are contemplating a few more social activities for next year, so stay tuned. If you have any other suggestions or would like to take on the role of social events coordinator, please let me know.

Lions Club Warner Qld - Update

After three very successful ‘Meet and Greet’ Days in the Warner area and three Information Evenings we now have nine new members. We also have a number of people who have shown interest in joining with five application forms awaiting completion. On the 2nd Information Evening on 16th November, eight of the new members were inducted into the club by 1st Vice District Governor, Donna Hedges, who also gave a speech about what being a Lion means and what some of the projects the new club can get involved in locally, nationally and internationally.

The new members and prospective members mingled well together, which can only mean a big plus for the new club. The new members will be holding their first official Business Meeting on 5th December to discuss various matters, including their planned sausage sizzle on 15th December and club dues for the January to June 2019 period. At this meeting there were 13 members plus another who signed up on the night.

Lions Children of Courage Awards 2019

The Lions Club of Samford Inc. will be, for the first time, hosting the “Lions Children of Courage Awards” and we are now accepting nominations from the community.

The awards provide recognition to an extraordinary group of children with special needs, for their achievements in a variety of life changing situations.

These awards will portray them as children who have successfully overcome additional barriers which face them in this world and Act as an encouragement for their future, Help them to believe in themselves and Help to increase their self-worth.

There are 4 categories in which a child may be nominated:

- Special needs.

- Courageous act or deed

- Sibling recognition or

- Inspiring sporting achievement.

This is not a competition. Every child will receive an award at a gala ceremony to be held at the Samford Community Hall on Sunday 3rd March 2019.

Children should be between 5 and 15 years old at the close of nominations.

Nominations will close on the 1st February 2019.

Burnie Brae Pantry Project

(As recently seen on TV)

We have had an ongoing commitment with Burnie Brae since September 2015 and have taken it on as a club project. The Market Day is Project Pantry’s initiative that offers staple foods and personal care items to seniors on an aged pension and individuals receiving a disability support pension.

On MARKET DAY, after paying a $5 entry fee (which goes back into buying more provisions), clients walk through the market and collect one item from each table. Some items are pre-packed for convenience; including tinned or package items (cereals, rice, pasta, beans etc.) As well as personal care packs, other items include eggs, sweet/savoury biscuits, fresh bread, fresh fruit and vegetables etc. Meat is also provided at each Market Day for an additional $2. Each meat pack contains 2 sausages, 2 chicken wings, 1 chop and 150 g of mince.

In addition to receiving a hamper, recipients are invited to share a cup of tea or coffee and connect with others in the community.

With the assistance of the Drake’s Samford a specially marked yellow topped bin is being prominently displayed outside the store; to enable members of the Samford community to place any items they may have purchased in the bin to assist these pensioners in being able to buy staple foods at an affordable price. For any items that are too big to fit through the slot, they can give them to one of the friendly staff in

Drakes.

We, as members of the Samford Lions Club, are able to support this project by donating non-perishable items and toiletries each meeting in the basket provided. So please give generously whenever you can.

PLEASE SUPPORT THIS WORTHWHILE CAUSE BY PROVIDING CANNED GOODS AND TOILETERIES.
