Auto-Documenting the Genocide Against the Tutsi in rwanda

the testimonial encounter within the Cinema of Me

Alexandre Dauge-Roth

Alexandre Dauge-Roth is Associate Professor of French and Francophone Studies at Bates College, Maine. His scholarship and teaching investigate the social tensions between personal memory and collective trauma through testimonial literature, cinema, and documentaries. He published Writing and Filming the Genocide of the Tutsi in Rwanda: Dismembering and Remembering Traumatic History in 2010.

For two survivors of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, the possibility to bear witness relied on their mutual ability to take a camera, to shoot back, and edit an unprecedented representation of themselves as witnesses and survivors. is talk will focus on the rst-person documentaries of Gilbert Ndahayo "Beyond the Deadly Pit" and Daddy De Maximo's "By the Shortcut" to explore the voices of survivors within the judicial process known as Gacaca and the writing of history within the national reunication process.

Free Public Screening (in conjunction with the class “India Through Film”)

Vishal Bhardwajʼs adaptation of Shakespeareʼs “Othello”

(2006, 155m, in Hindi with English subtitles)

After successfully reimagining “Macbeth” in the Mumbai underworld (in Maqbool, 2003), Bhardwaj sets Shakespeareʼs meditation on fatal jealousy in contemporary rural Uttar Pradesh, substituting caste for race, and making the playʼs aristocrats and retainers into warlord-like local politicians and their goons. Omkara (Ajay Devgan), a low-caste man, rises to power in the service of a corrupt politician (Naseeruddin Shah) and wins the love of Dolly Mishra (Kareena Kapoor), a Brahman lawyerʼs daughter. But when he favors another man over his own crony Langda (Saif Ali Khan), the latter sets out to destroy him—Khanʼs Filmfare-Award-winning interpretation of Iago, one of Shakespeareʼs most intriguing villains, is a stellar departure from his usual lover-boy roles. Powerful acting, splendid sets and costumes, and intense emotions reaffirm why India still finds masala in Englandʼs national Bard.

ICFRC Lecture Luncheon – Friday, Nov. 15, 12:00-1:15pm Kurt Wall, MD/MPH Student "Witchcraft and Racism Threaten Tanzanians with Albinism" People with albinism have faced widespread discrimination and violence in east Africa for centuries, but only recently has this problem garnered significant international attention. Nowhere is this human rights issue more pronounced than in Tanzania, where a half-hearted government response to the problem has failed to stem waves of attacks against members of the albinism community. In the summer of 2012, Kurt Wall spent 11 weeks in Mwanza, Tanzania to try to determine what must be done to adequately address the unique social and healthcare-related issues facing this vulnerable population. He will share his experiences as a medical student at a healthcare clinic in rural Tanzania. Kurt Wall is a third-year MD/MPH candidate at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and College of Public Health. He received his undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 2011 with a major in Neuroscience. This spring he will be conducting an international health practicum project as part of his Master of Public Health degree. Register here, or contact the ICFRC office at (319) 335-0351 or [email protected]. Lectures are 12:00-1:15 pm @ Congregational Church, 30 North Clinton Street. Luncheons are $9.00 for ICFRC members, $12.00 for non-members. We encourage you to bring guests who would enjoy this topic. NATIVE HISTORIES AND ENDURANCEIN THE MIDWEST

SPRING 2014 COURSE IN AMERICAN INDIAN AND NATIVE STUDIES

This course explores Indigenous histories in the Great Lakes region—including Canada—with an emphasis on how these histories bear on the present and future. A key concept is survivance, which Anishinaabe writ-er Gerald Vizenor defines as a combination of survival and endurance. In contrast to absence or powerless-ness, survivance affirms Indigenous presence and agency in past and present. Examining colonization and decolonization as ongoing processes—as opposed to historic events—this course emphasizes concepts such as sovereignty, self-determination, and environmental justice within the context of enduring and evolving relationships to land and place.

Activities include a mix of lectures, discussions, film screenings, and a collaborative mapping project. Read-ings are drawn from a variety of fields, including Indigenous studies, history, cultural geography, American Studies, anthropology, and performance studies. Course requirements include weekly reading responses, participation in discussions, one short paper, and a historic profile for the mapping project.

Internships with the Cold War International History Project

The Cold War International History Project (CWIHP) at the Woodrow Wilson Center is currently accepting internship applications for the Spring 2014 academic semester. The application deadline is November 15, 2013. The Project supports the full and prompt release of historical materials by governments on all sides of the Cold War, and seeks to accelerate the process of integrating new sources, materials and perspectives from the former "communist bloc" with the historiography of the Cold War which has been written over the past few decades largely by Western scholars reliant on Western archival sources. It also seeks to transcend barriers of language, geography, and regional specialization to create new links among scholars interested in Cold War history. Interns at the Project will assist with research at archives and libraries, editing document manuscripts, publishing, translating, and disseminating CWIHP bulletins and working papers, coordinating scholarly conferences, and answering various information requests. Interns will also assist with digitizing, describing and uploading historical documents to the CWIHP Digital Archive. Interns at CWIHP are at the forefront of the debate and research over the historiography of the Cold War and will gain valuable knowledge from interaction with CWIHP staff, Woodrow Wilson Center Fellows as well as visiting scholars.

For more information, visit http://www.wilsoncenter.org/opportunity/internships-the-cold-war-international-history-project-1. To apply, email a resume and cover letter to the Cold War International History Project at [email protected] by November 15, 2013.

Internships at The Adroit Journal In partnership with the University of Pennsylvania’s Kelly Writers House, The Adroit Journal (www.adroit.co.nr), a charitable print/online literary publication, is looking to expand. To facilitate our growth, we are seeking college/university students interested in the journal’s various marketing, communication, humanitarian, layout, and legal responsibilities—in addition to our wealth of poetry and prose staff reading positions. Currently, our staff is comprised of approximately sixty high school and college students from Mauritius to Oklahoma, New York to Singapore, Kentucky to Alberta, and everywhere in-between. We would be delighted to consider Iowa students as additions to our community. For example, we are currently seeking human rights correspondents to orchestrate the annual humanitarian features for inclusion in the journal’s winter issues. Additionally, business-minded students might be interested in our marketing and advertising correspondent positions, and communications students might be interested in the roles of blog editor or social media correspondent. Furthermore, we are looking to find community service liaisons that might be interested in working with our partner charity, the Fill-A-Room Literacy Campaign, to coordinate the distribution of future print copies of our publication free-of-charge to underprivileged institutions and venues within regional hubs of Baltimore, Chicago, Boston, New York City, Berkeley, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. Finally, of course, we are always looking for more staff readers to help our current staff sift through the ever-growing collection of submissions. To check out all the positions offered (or to find more information on those I just listed), please feel free browse through the Employment Catalogue, which contains all of the necessary application and job description information. The application period for these various positions will close on November 13th, 2013. In the meantime, we will begin to evaluate applications on a rolling basis. Interested students may apply for as many positions as they would like and, although prior experience is always appreciated, we are always willing to work with staff members as necessary. This opportunity is open to anyone, anywhere—regardless of academic institution or academic major. Please feel free to contact [email protected] with any questions.
