Liikkeellä marraskuussa -festivaali täyttää tänä vuonna 25 vuotta. Festivaali on näiden vuosien aikana elänyt monta muutoskautta. Aina ajankohtaisena ja uutta etsivänä festivaali on tuonut sekä valoa marraskuun pimeyteen että oivalluksia ja taiteellisia avauksia kotimaamme tanssin ja esittävien taiteiden ympärillä käytyyn kes-kusteluun. Festivaali on esitellyt niin butoa (Carlotta Ikeda 1990) kuin fyysistä tanssi-ilmaisua (Wim Vandekeybus 1992, Rui Horta 1994), terveistä ja vammaisista tanssijoista koostuvaa taidetta (CandoCo 1998) sekä performatiivista esitystaidetta (La Ribot ja Vera Mantero 2000). Vuosiensa varrella festivaali on tuonut monta tanssikentän nyky-klassikkoa Helsinkiin (Felix Ruckert – Secret Service 2004, NEU-ER TANZ – Revolver 2005, Jonathan Burrows ja Matteo Fargion – Both Sitting duet 2006, Jérôme Bel – The Show must go on 2008 ym.) ja tilannut lukuisia kantaesityksiä kotimaisilta koreo grafeilta ja taiteilijaryhmiltä. Festivaalin tämän vuoden tilausteos Doubt in Frame / Queen of Sweden Killed Descartes on kolmen suomalaisen tanssitaiteilijan, mediataiteilijan, liettualaisen näyttelijän ja puo-lalaisen ohjaajan Dasha Mazurkan yhteistyö. Kantaesitys jatkaa fes-tivaalin monivuotista tuotannollista yhteistyötä Zodiak – Uuden tanssin keskuksen kanssa. Liikkeellä marraskuussa -festivaali on nyt aikuisuuden kynnyksellä ja toiminnan suunta on taas muuttumassa. Kansainvälisen festivaalin on mahdollista toimia poimien helmiä ulkomaisesta ohjelmatarjonnasta luottaen jo valmiisiin menestyksiin. Tämän vuoden festivaalin ohjelmistossa suurin osa esityksistä on kuitenkin uusia ja osaa esityksistä ei ole vielä tätä kirjoitettaessa edes ole-massa. Ollakseen merkittävä, radikaali tai yllättävä teos voi myös olla uudelleentulkinta, niin kuin osa festivaalin teoksista todistaa. Käsittelemällä eri vuosikymmenten koreografisia strategioita teki-jät ja yleisö kohtaavat uutena niiden taiteellisen potentiaalin ja voiman. Festivaali haluaa kiinnittyä taiteilijoihin, tukea uutta ajattelua ja saattaa näkyville teoksia, jotka vasta hakevat merkityksiään ja paikkaansa kansainvälisessä taidekeskustelussa.

Tänä vuonna olemme hakeneet teoksia Ranskasta. FranceDanse going North on Institut français´n tuella tuotettu kulttuuriyhteistyöprojekti, joka toteutetaan yhdessä useiden pohjoismaisten part-nereiden kanssa. Osana projektia tuomme Helsinkiin Anne Collodin parades & changes, replay in expansion, uuden näyttämöversion Anna Halprinin klassikkoteoksesta Parades & Changes. Rachid Ouramdane esittää poliittisen teoksensa Exposition Universelle (Maailmannäyttely), joka hakee merkitysmaailmansa kansallisten identiteettien merkeistä ja niiden yksilöön käyttämästä vallasta. Kolmas ranskalainen koreografi festivaalillamme on nuori Noé Soulier, joka tutkii filosofian kehollisuutta teoksessaan Ideography. Ranskankieliseltä kulttuurialueelta Belgiasta tulee lisäksi esiintyjäryhmä, joka tulkitsee uudelleen Pierre Droulersin hienon liikekoreografian de l’air et du vent (ilmasta ja tuulesta). Esitämme festivaalilla myös kaksi Anna Halprinin työtä käsittelevää dokumenttia sekä belgialaisen Thierry De Meyn kolme loistavaa tanssielokuvaa, joissa koreografeina ovat William Forsythe, Anna Theresa De Keersmaeker sekä uusimmassa Thomas Hauert.

This year is the 25th anniversary of Moving in November festival. Over the years the festival has gone through several periods of change. Always up-to-date and looking for new, the festival has brought light to the dark evenings of November as well as insight and artistic open-ings to the discussion revolving around dance and performing arts in Finland. The festival has presented Butoh (Carlotta Ikeda 1990), powerful physical expression (Wim Vandekeybus 1992, Rui Horta 1994), dance for able and disabled dancers (CandoCo 1998) as well as performative stage works (La Ribot and Vera Mantero 2000). Over the years the festival has presented several classics of contem-porary dance (Felix Ruckert – Secret Service 2004, NEUER TANZ – Revolver 2005, Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion – Both Sitting duet 2006, Jérôme Bel – The Show must go on 2008) and commissioned a number of premieres from Finnish choreographers and groups. This year’s commissioned work Doubt in Frame / Queen of Sweden Killed Descartes is a collaboration between three Finnish dance artists, a media artist, a Lithuanian actor and the Polish direc-tor Dasha Mazurka. The premiere continues the festival’s long-lasting collaboration with Zodiak – Center for New Dance.

The Moving in November festival – now at the brink of maturity – is again taking a new direction. This international festival has the possibility to pick pearls from abroad while relying on already suc-cessful performances. Yet this year’s festival features mostly new performances, some of which do not yet exist as we speak. As some of the works in the festi-val prove, a performance may be significant, radical or surprising even as a re-interpretation. By dealing with the choreographic strategies of various decades, both the artists and audience face anew their artistic

potential and strength. The festival wishes to attach itself to artists, to support new thinking and to bring forth works that have yet to find their meaning and place in the international debate on art. This year we have looked to France for performances. FranseDance going North is a cultural co- operation project realized together with several Nordic partners with the support of Institut français. As a part of the project we bring to Helsinki Anne Collod’s parades & changes, replay in expansion, a re-enactment of Anna Halprin’s classic work Parades & Changes. Rachid Ouramdane’s political work Exposition Universelle (World Fair) draws it’s meaning from emblems of national identity and their power over the individual. The third French choreographer featured in the fes-tival is young Noé Soulier, whose work Ideography studies the physicality of philosophy. Still more from the French culture zone, a Belgian group will re-interpret Pierre Droulers’ fantastic choreogra-phy de l’air et du vent (Air and Wind). The festival will also feature two documentaries about the work of Anna Halprin, and three brilliant dance films by Thierry De Mey with choreographies by William Forsythe, Anna Theresa De Keersmaeker and Thomas Hauert.

Doubt in Frame / Queen of Sweden Killed Descartes is collaboration be-tween three Finnish dance artists, a media artist, a Lithuanian actor and the Polish director Dasha Mazurka. In this new creation Mazurka and her collaborators focus on the theme of doubt in relation to the different do-mains of culture such as sexuality, religion and the history of philosophy.

Doubting, being in the intermediate space between the belief and the disbelief, is in the same time personal and shared phenomenon. It unfolds repetitiously in an artistic process as well as it establishes itself in the very base of the theater which is by definition an encountering of the private and the public. –Dasha Mazurka

Doubt in Frame / Queen of Sweden Killed Descartes is a commissioned work for the festival. Dasha Mazurka Open Source – frame for artistic practice – will be launched at www.dashamazurka.net in the end of Oc-tober. Dasha Mazurka Open Source is a form of distributing artistic work, ideas and information and making these available for further development and variation. It is constructed of modules, which are diverse in content, medium and function. Thematic of doubt and uncertainty is binding these modules together. Dasha Mazurka Open Source invites and commis-sions artists to participate this frame of inter-local activity, which does not demand physical presence.

Doubt in Frame / Queen of Sweden Killed Descartes on kolmen suomalaisen tanssitaiteilijan, media-taiteilijan, liettualaisen näyttelijän ja puolalaisen

ohjaajan Dasha Mazurkan yhteistyö. Uudessa teoksessa Mazurka ja hänen kumppaninsa keskittyvät epäilemisen teemaan, jota he käsittelevät suh-teessa kulttuurin eri alueisiin kuten seksuaalisuuteen, uskontoon ja filosofi-an historiaan.

Esityksen rinnalla, osoitteessa www.dashamazurka.net julkaistaan Dasha Mazurka Open Source, joka on kehys taiteelliselle toiminnalle, ideoille ja informaatiolle. Sisällöltään ja toiminnaltaan erilaisista moduleista raken-tuvan Dasha Mazurka Open Sourcen tavoitteena on soveltaa open source -toimintatapaa tanssin ja esittävien taiteiden harjoittamisessa. Se tarjoaa raameja ja tehtäviä tutkittavaksi, toteutettavaksi ja dokumentoitavaksi ja haastaa myös pohtimaan, mitä muotoja tanssitaiteen harjoittaminen voi nykypäivänä ottaa ja millaisina muotoina taiteen harjoittaminen voi arti-kuloitua? Dasha Mazurka Open Source kutsuu osallistumaan taiteelliseen toimintaan, joka ei vaadi fyysistä läsnäoloa.

Dasha Mazurka on puolalainen koreografi ja ohjaaja, jonka kotikaupunki on Katowice. Hän opiskeli tanssia SNDO:ssa, Amsterdamissa 1980-lu-vun puolivälissä ja saavutti menestystä koreografina Hollannissa 1980- ja 1990-lukujen vaihteessa. Myöhemmin hän on työskennellyt mm. Ber-liinissä ja Poznanissa, Puolassa. Vuonna 1996 hän vetäytyi esitystaiteen ammattikentältä. Doubt in Frame/Queen of Sweden Killed Descartes on 15 vuoden hiljaisuuden päättävä come back. Teos sisältää osia hänen varhai-sista teoksistaan.

Veli Lehtovaara on koreografi ja tanssija, joka toimii tanssin ja esitystai-teen ammattikentällä Suomessa ja Belgiassa. Hän valmistui P.A.R.T.S. Research Cycle -koulutusohjelmasta vuonna 2010 ja koreografiksi Teatte-rikorkeakoulun maisteriohjelmasta 2011. Lehtovaara on kutsuttu Zodiak – Uuden tanssin keskuksen housekoreografiksi kaudelle 2011–13. Hänen viimeisimpiä töitään koreografina ovat: Kynnyksellä – On the threshold (2011), Light as a Feather, Green as an Apple (2010) ja lyhytelokuva A Man Standing Behind a Seated Woman (2009).

Mikko Hyvönen valmistui P.A.R.T.S. -tanssikorkeakoulusta Brysselistä vuonna 2010 ja työskentelee tällä hetkellä freelance tanssija-koreografina Suomessa ja ulkomailla. Hyvönen haluaisi pysyä avoimena uusien lähesty-mistapojen ja näkökulmien tutkimiselle tanssitaiteen tekemisessä. Viimei-simpiä yhteistöitä: Kynnyksellä – On the threshold (2011), Houdini’s hit (2011) ja Trash Talk (2010).

Maria Saivosalmi on valmistunut tanssitaiteilijaksi Teatterikorkeakoulun maisteriohjelmasta. Vuodesta 2004 hän on työskennellyt tanssijana Hel-sinki Dance Companyssa useiden eri koreografien (mm. Nigel Charnock, Kenneth Kvarnström) kanssa. Yhteistyö liettualaisen Andrius Katinaksen kanssa on ollut aktiivista jo kymmenen vuoden ajan. Andrius Katinas on Suomeen kotiutunut liettualainen teatteri- ja tanssi-taiteilija. Hän on opiskellut teatteria ja tanssia sekä Liettuassa (Lithuanian Academy of Music) että Suomessa (Teatterikorkeakoulu). Hänen aktiivi-nen työskentelynsä esiintyjänä ja koreografina alkoi vuonna 1999.

Jukka Huitila on valmistunut valosuunnittelijaksi Teatterikorkeakou-lun maisteriohjelmasta. Huitila työskentelee valosuunnittelijana pääosin esittävän taiteen kentällä. Huitilan visualisointeja ja videototeutuksia on nähty myös mm. live-musiikin tapahtumissa, tanssifestivaaleilla ja instal-laatioissa. Hänen kiinnostuksensa performanssi- ja Live Art taiteeseen on johtanut esiintymisiin näyttämöteoksissa vuodesta 2005. Huitila työsken-telee kansainvälisesti.

René Descartes (1596–1650) oli merkittävä ranskalainen filosofi, mate-maatikko, kirjailija ja tiedemies. Hän opiskeli Collège Royal Henry-Le-Grandissa La Flèchessä sekä Poitiers’n yliopistossa ja sai lakitieteen bak-kalaureaatin ja lisensiaatin arvon vuonna 1616. Descartes työskenteli niin Ranskassa kuin ulkomaillakin: viimeisin matka suuntautui Tukholmaan, jossa Descartes opetti Ruotsin kuningatar Kristiinalle filosofiaa. Descar-tesin kuolinsyyksi kerrottiin keuhkokuume, mutta myöhemmin hänen on esitetty kuolleen arsenikkimyrkytykseen.

Ruotsin kuningatar Kristiina (1626–1689) kasvatettiin sukupuolestaan huolimatta prinssiksi. Jo viidentoista vuoden iässä Kristiina puhui seitse-mää kieltä ja osoitti lahjakkuutta useammassakin tieteen- ja taiteenlajissa. Kristiinan kiinnostuksenkohteet, tuolloin epänormaaleiksi luokitellut henkilökohtaiset suhteet sekä suurpiirteinen hallitsemistapa herättivät kyseenalaista huomiota ja luterilaisuudesta katoliseksi kääntyminen oli 1600-luvun Euroopassa skandaali.

Created in 1996, de l’air et du vent is one of Pierre Droulers’ major works. In this profoundly plastic choreography, which also incorporates exhilarating physicality, the choreographer manages to grab hold of the elusive and make the invisible visible. Here, despite their indescribable fragility, the movement along with the sound, lighting and set – consist-ing of a few objects or materials floating on stage – acquire a remarkable density. Built on the singular nature and commitment of magnificent performers the show combines the materiality of objects and the poetry of air. You can sense that they are really making the space breathe.

Fourteen years on, Pierre Droulers has decided to reactivate de l’air et du vent. He is “reactivating” rather than simply reviving it, because he sees this undertaking as an authentic act of artistic generation raising very topical questions about notions of creativity, transmission and collectivity.

The performance is no longer entirely the 1996 version of de l’air et du vent. It is much more than that – full of new meaning, it blows forward.

Belgialaisen Pierre Droulersin de l’air et du vent (Ilmasta ja tuulesta) on kekseliäs koreografia alati muuttuvasta luonnonvoimasta. Vuoden 1996 alkupe-räisteos elää ja hengittää uudelleentulkinnassa, joka

alkuperäisteoksen tavoin vakuuttaa ennen muuta vilpittömänä ylistyksenä liikkeelle ja kehollisuudelle. Droulersin mukaan de l’air et du vent on sekä poeettinen, poliittinen että filosofinen projekti.

de l’air et du vent on löytänyt inspiraationsa postmodernin tanssin liike-ajattelusta. Yhdessä alkuperäisteoksen tanssitaiteilijoiden kanssa Droulers aloitti teoksen valmistelun työstämällä sen lähes tismalleen alkuperäisiin mittoihinsa. Alkuperäiseen toteutukseen sovellettujen uusien ideoiden sekä aktiivisen taiteellisen dialogin myötä teos kasvoi nykyiseen muo-toonsa. Muotoon, joka hengittää omaa musikaalista aikaansa sekä luottaa monitasoisen liikkeen ilmaisuvoimaan.

Koreografina, monipuolisena esiintyjänä ja Charleroi/Danses'n yhtenä taiteellisena johtajana tunnettu Pierre Droulers on työskennellyt mm. Anne Teresa De Keersmaekerin, Michèle Anne De Meyn sekä Sherryl Suttonin kanssa. Droulers on perehtynyt Judson Dance Theaterin perintöön tutustuttuaan Steve Paxtoniin New Yorkissa 1970-luvulla.

Noé Soulier composes disparate theoretical argumentations through the use of choreographic, musical or cinematic tools. Far from defending a thesis, he engages the audience in a thought experiment structured around dramaturgical principles (rhythm of speech, expectations, etc.). The result-ing polyphony of thoughts is an opportunity to revisit classical theoretical discourse through the live experience of a construction in progress.

Noé Soulier, Paris 1987, studied at the Paris Conservatoire, the National Ballet School of Canada, and at PARTS – Brussels, where he graduated from the research cycle in 2010. The same year he received a bachelor degree in philosophy at Nanterre University (Paris X). He is currently doing a master in La Sorbonne (Paris IV). He also studied harpsichord with Elisabeth Joyé. In 2010, he is laureate of the first prize of the Danse Élargie competition, organized by Le Théâtre de la Ville – Paris and Le Musée de la Danse – Rennes, with the piece Little Perceptions. 2011–12, he'll take part in the residency program of Le Palais de Tokyo – Paris: Le Pavillon.

Ideography was premiered in August 2011 at Tanz im August festival in Berlin.

Noé Soulierin luentoesitys tutkii teoreettisia argument-teja koreografisin, musiikil-lisin ja elokuvallisin keinoin.

Teoksessa filosofiset tekstit asettuvat vastakkain, rinnakkain ja lomittain; kertomukset ihmisen maailmasta sekä kehollisuudesta leikkautuvat äkisti esimerkiksi hyönteisen rajattuun aistimaailmaan.

Kehollisuutemme hämmästyttävä omalaatuisuus näyttäytyy teoksessa vie-raana Soulierin tarkastellessa kehoaan ja sen toimintaa eri näkökulmista. Soulier tasapainoilee kysymyksiensä keskellä, seuraten sanojensa painoa ja kuunnellen niiden kaikuja merkitysavaruudessamme. Arkipäiväiset tapah-tumat saavat valotuksen, jossa itsestäänselvyyksien läpi voi katsoa, tutkia ja oivaltaa.

Haluaisin käyttää teatteria muokatakseni teoreettisen työn reuna- ehtoja, koska konteksti, johon kulloinkin sijoitutaan, määrittää sen, mitä on mahdollista ajatella. Kun muutetaan kontekstia, muutetaan ajattelun mahdollisuuksia. Akateemisen maailman lait eivät päde teatteriin ja päin vastoin. –Noé Soulier

Ranskalainen Noé Soulier on opiskellut tanssia Pariisin konservatoriossa, Kanadan kansallisbaletin koulussa sekä koreografiaa Brysselissä P.A.R.T.S. -koulussa. Hän tekee MA tutkintoa filosofiasta Sorbonnen yliopistossa Pariisissa ja on opiskellut cembalon soittoa Elisabeth Joyén johdolla. Vuonna 2010 hän voitti teoksellaan Little Perceptions ensimmäisen palkin-non Danse Élargie kilpailussa, jonka järjestivät Théâtre de la Ville Pariisissa ja Musée de la Danse Rennesistä.

Ideography sai ensi-iltansa elokuussa 2011 Berliinissä.

Exposition Universelle is a solo work by Rachid Ouramdane that power-fully depicts the gap between ideologies and the individual. This work cross-illumines the individual's path of pleasure towards national ecstasy, while criticizing the power with national emblems which seize our iden-tity. Accompanied by flag heraldry and national anthems, Ouramdane studies the body as a medium for external signs and messages. Exposition Universelle is a personal statement on the connections between politics and the human body.

What I’m trying to do with this new work is to observe the way political speeches reflect on everyday life. It’s not only about the consequences on social organization, it’s also about the concrete effect that political decisions have on the body, the flesh, and the way some of them can represent a real economic and physical danger on people. Today I’m trying to work again with this tension by using national aesthetic and the way political authorities created stereotypes of glorious and bombastic body. –Rachid Ouramdane

Exposition Universelle was premiered in May 2011 at EXTRA festival in France. The performance is a part of FranceDanse going North project.

Exposition Universelle on Rachid Ouramdanen yksilön ja ideologioi-den välistä kuilua väkevästi kuvaava

sooloteos. Ajankohtainen teos ristivalottaa yksilön nautinnon muutosta kohti kansallista hurmiota, mutta kritisoi samalla sitä voimaa, jolla eri-laiset kansalliset merkit kaappaavat identiteettimme. Lippuheraldiikan ja kansallishymnien äärellä Ouramdane pohtii kehoa ulkoisen merkin tai merkityksen välineenä. Exposition Universelle on henkilökohtainen puheenvuoro politiikan ja kehon välisistä kytköksistä.

Rachid Ouramdane on Ranskassa syntynyt algerialais-taustainen taiteilija. Ouramdane on käsitellyt sosiaalisten, maantieteellisten sekä kulttuuristen identiteettien rakentumisen ja esittämisen ongelmia koko uransa ajan. Suomessa häneltä on aiemmin nähty teos Les mort pudiques, joka käsitteli nuorisoa ja nuorten kuolemantapauk siin liittyviä nettifragmentteja.

Ouramdanen taiteellisessa työssä rikkoutuvat taidemuotojen rajat: mo-net tanssiteoksista voidaan lukea body artin piiriin ja teoksissa on usein nähtävissä piirteitä myös mediataiteesta. Ouramdane on järjestelmällisesti haastanut ”koreografin” ja ”esiintyjän” perinteisiä määritelmiä sekä ky-seenalaistanut taiteen tuottamisen ja kierrättämisen tapoja yhdessä perus-tamansa L´A. -ryhmän toiminnassa. Ouramdanea voidaan kiistatta pitää yhtenä ranskalaisen esittävän taiteen tämänhetkisistä kärkinimistä.

Exposition Universelle sai ensi-iltansa toukokuussa 2011 EXTRA -festi-vaalilla, Ranskassa. Esitys on osa FranceDanse going North -projektia.

French choreographer Anne Collod has recreated Anna Halprin's re-nowned beautiful and controversial Parades & Changes from 1965 in collaboration with European dancers and aerialists. Halprin is one of the pioneers of postmodern dance in the United States and has been a major influence for more than 60 years. Parades & Changes was created with electronic music pioneer Morton Subotnick. The work caused great scan-dal when it was first shown in New York and was forbidden because of the complete nudity of the performers.

Halprin's Parades & Changes has been an inspiration to Anne Collod from the early years of the 21st century. She revitalized the work, premier-ing Parades & Changes, replay in 2008, performed by an international group of dance artists. parades & changes, replay in expansion 2011 pro-poses a complete version of all the "scores" of the sixties.

Putting into play daily actions altered by very simple instructions, per-formers cross the theatre with a series of "parades" which invite imaginary of the collective and utopias of "being together". Sound bodies, trips of objects, distended temporalities, raw materials and numerous sensorial states: This "ceremony of trust" is a magnificent unveiling which lays bare the process, the place, the action and the performer.

parades & changes, replay in expansion was premiered in March 2011 in Pontoise, France. The performance is a part of FranceDanse going North project.

The question “What possibilities for being together does dance invent?” is one of those that have guided my creative and research work for several years. It is this question that led me to meet Anna Halprin, an extraordinary woman and ground-breaking choreographer whose work supplies incandescently hu-man answers. That question has also driven this project, and, more specifi-cally, made me want to work on this 1965 piece – parades & changes – which in its day blew away the codes that governed dance and its representation. What effects can be produced by bringing this piece’s multiple scenarios back into play, in a different time and places, by actors of today who are directly engaged with the questions shaping the contemporary scene? How can the con-ditions for a fruitful exchange between Anna Halprin and a new generation of dancers and choreographers be created? All of these issues lie at the heart of parades & changes, replays. –Anne Collod

Parades & Changes -teoksesta vuodelta 1965. Alkuperäinen teos on jäänyt tanssitaiteen historiaan radikaalina käännekohtana. Esitys kulkee esiku-vaansa mukaillen moninaisiin aistitiloihin ja venytettyihin aikakäsityksiin. Arkiset toiminnot muuntuvat anarkistiseksi paraatiksi, joka on tulvillaan erikoislaatuisia ja harhaisiakin mielikuvia yhteisöllisyydestä.

Halprinin Parades & Changes on innoittanut ranskalaista Collodia 2000-luvun alkuvuosista lähtien. Collod herätti teoksen uudelleen eloon: parades & changes, replay sai ensi-iltansa vuonna 2008 kansainvälisen tans-sitaiteilijaryhmän esittämänä. Ylistävän vastaanoton saanut teos kiersi laa-jalti Euroopassa ja Yhdysvalloissa, jossa alkuperäinen Parades & Changes oli sisältämänsä alastomuuden takia peräti kahdenkymmenenviiden vuo-den ajan kielletty. Collod sai molempiin uudelleentulkintoihin arvokasta apua Halprinilta ja Parades & Changes -teoksen musiikista vastanneelta Morton Subotnickilta.

Keväällä 2011 ensi-iltansa saanut parades & changes, replay in expansion on ensimmäinen kokonainen uudelleentulkinta teoksesta: Collodin johdolla esiintyjäryhmä luo alkuperäisteoksen kaikki kohtaukset uusiksi. Tanssitai-teilijoiden joukkoon on kutsuttu ryhmä sirkustaiteilijoita. Lavan element-tejä hyödyntäen he heittäytyvät valoihin ja varjoihin, ilmaan – näyttämön kaikkiin ulottuvuuksiin. Liikkeellä marraskuussa -festivaali tuo helsinki-läiselle yleisölle mahdollisuuden todistaa teoksen taiteellinen rohkeus ja nauttia sen valloittavasta huumorista.

Alunperin mm. biologiaa opiskellut Anne Collod on ranskalainen koreografi, joka on työskennellyt esimerkiksi Boris Charmatzin, Lau-rent Pichaudin sekä Cécile Proustin kanssa. Collod perusti ...&the alters -organisaation vuonna 2005, sitä ennen hän työskenteli eri 1900-luvun koreografien (mm. Doris Humprey, Kurt Joos, Yvonne Rainer) teosten uudelleentulkintojen parissa Eéfro’s Projectin kautta. Tämän projektin kautta Collod myös tapasi ensimmäistä kertaa Anna Halprinin.

Postmodernin tanssin uranuurtaja Anna Halprin on 1940-luvulta asti työskennellyt tanssitaiteen parissa, sitä uudistaen ja sen merkitystä alati kysyen. Hän on tutkinut tanssin parantavaa voimaa sekä kehittänyt uusia tanssin esityskonsepteja ja improvisaatiomenetelmiä. Amerikkalainen Halprin on yhteisötanssin pioneeri, joka on tanssija teatteriteoksissaan käsitellyt rohkeasti tulenarkojakin poliittisia aiheita. Halprinin opetus-työ on innoittanut satoja tanssintekijöitä (mm. Meredith Monk, Trisha Brown, Yvonne Rainer ja Simone Forti) ja hänen oppinsa kaikuvat Judson Dance Theaterin radikaalissa traditiossa. Hänen kotinsa kuuluisalla ulko-ilmalavalla taidetta, tanssia ja koreografiaa ovat tutkineet mm. koreografit Merce Cunningham, Eiko ja Koma sekä Min Tanaka, säveltäjistä John Cage, Luciano Berio, Terry Riley, LeMonte Young ja Morton Subotnick, sekä taiteilijoista mm. Three dance films by Thierry De Mey are a combination of timeless beauty and skillful motion. The choreographies are made by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, William Forsythe and Thomas Hauert, all leading names in contemporary dance.

One flat thing is rightly considered as one of William Forsythe's major works, in which the virtuosity of the performers rivals the ingenious complexity of the choreography. One Flat Thing, reproduced adopts a subjective approach, not exhaustive, a perspective that gathers and prede-termines the sequence of production choices – in our view the best guar-antee to have a chance of success in the transmission of the choreographic challenges.

Starting with Maurice Ravel’s choreographic poem for orchestra, Thomas Hauert has produced La Valse, an abstract choreographic composition. The mental space between the performers is experienced as a flock of birds unleashing the complexity of its figures, with no conductor and with no pre-established plan. The harmonies, the melodies, the counterpoints are translated, amplified or physically deflected by the dancers.

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s choreography Prélude à la mer, brought to life by two performers, Mark Lorimer and Cynthia Loemij confronts itself with the harshness of the scene of a catastrophe: the site of a vanish-ing sea, the Aral Sea. The dance lives in a delicate symbiosis both with the surrounding emptiness and the music of Claude Debussy.

Thierry De Meyn kolmessa tanssielokuvassa kohtaavat ajaton kauneus ja taidokas liike. Elokuvien koreografit Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, William Forsythe ja Thomas Hauert ovat kaikki nykytanssin merkittä-vimpiä nimiä – ja tämä näkyy myös De Meyn elokuvien tasossa.

Nerokas One flat thing mielletään oikeutetusti yhdeksi koreografi William Forsythen pääteoksista. Thierry De Meyn One Flat Thing,

La Valse on Maurice Ravelin sävellyksen siivittämä elegantti tanssiku-vaus impulsiivisesta liikkeestä. Thomas Hauertin ja ZOO -tanssiryhmän luomus pitäytyy elokuvassakin tanssijoiden väliseen harmoniaan: teos on syntynyt pitkälti tanssijoiden keskinäisestä vuorovaikutuksesta sekä reaktioista. Koreografian jokainen hetki on yhtä tärkeä, yhtä intensiivinen, yhtä merkityksellinen. De Mey luottaa elokuvassaan onnistuneesti kore-ografian lennokkuuteen, pelkistettyjen tilojen rujoon tunnelmaan sekä tanssijoiden karismaan.

Anne Teresa De Keersmaekerin taidokas koreografia Prélude à la mer nähdään katoavalla Aralin merellä. Kuiva maa androgyynien faunien (ilmiömäiset Mark Lorimer ja Cynthia Loemij) alla viestii katastrofista, matka pakenevaan rantaan on täynnä kyltymätöntä liikettä. Tanssitai-teilijoiden dramaattinen liikekieli elää hienovaraisessa symbioosissa sekä ympäröivän tyhjyyden että Claude Debussyn musiikin kanssa.

When French choreographer Alain Buffard set out to create a film about the legendary American choreographer Anna Halprin, the pair staged a series of lunches on sites that were used for her performances, including Washington Square in San Francisco, the Berkeley Art Museum and Stinson Beach. The result is a move away from the documentary form, nor merely a film about dance, but instead a dialogue between two artists of different generations and geographies. More than a performance or a film, the project became an extended interview with astonishing moments of exchange. The "lunch scene" idea came to us in the beginning when I was trying convin-cing Anna to be a part of this project and to do a performance together. She was enthusiastic about the idea of a dance performance, but not in the tradi-tional sense with a repetition schedule and the usual constraints. We came up with the idea to stage a lunch and in so doing expose some of the performance pieces we had selected. –Alain Buffard

keskeisiin hahmoihin kuuluvasta Anna Halprinista. Se on viiden lou-naan aikana kuvattu kahden taiteilijan välinen intiimi dialogi. Buffard ja Halprin keskustelevat tapaamisten aikana mm. työskentelytavoistaan sekä taiteellisista kokeiluistaan liikkeen ja jokapäiväisten eleiden kanssa.

Halprin johdattaa Buffardin taiteilijauransa tärkeisiin paikkoihin ja tai-teensa teemoihin: keskusteluja käydään esimerkiksi Halprinin kotipihan kuuluisalla ulkoilmalavalla, meren rannalla sekä parades & changes, replay -teoksen harjoitusten äärellä. Halprinin sydämellinen, valloittava olemus ja taiteellinen ura sekä Buffardin henkilökohtainen näkökulma tekevät elokuvasta lämminhenkisen ja viihdyttävän.

Alain Buffard aloitti tanssimisen vuonna 1978 ja on uransa aikana tans-sinut useissa tuotannoissa mm. Brigitte Fargesisin, Daniel Larrieun ja Philippe Decouflén kanssa. Buffardin ensimmäinen sooloteos Bleu nuit valmistui vuonna 1988, seuraava soolo A Good Boy näki päivänvalon vasta kymmentä vuotta myöhemmin. Tällä välillä Buffard oli jo kertaalleen lopettanut tanssimisen vuonna 1991 kuultuaan sairastuneensa HIV:iin. Anna Halprinin workshopissa työskentely vuonna 1996 oli yksi keskeisistä syistä, jotka saivat Buffardin palaamaan tanssin pariin.

Breath Made Visible is the first feature length film about the life and career of Anna Halprin, the American dance pioneer who has helped redefine our notion of modern art with her belief in dance's power to teach, heal, and transform at all ages of life. This cinematic portrait blends recent interviews with counterparts such as the late Merce Cunningham, archival footage, including her establishment of the first multiracial dance compa-ny in the U.S., and excerpts of current performances such as “Parades and Changes” at the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, to weave a stunning, inspiring account of one of the most important cultural icons in modern dance.

Screened last year in the Moving in November Festival, this documentary is now re-run at the audience’s request. The name for the film comes from Halprin herself: according to her, dance is like breath made visible.

Breath Made Visible is a film about the living legend, Anna Halprin, one of America’s most influential though obscure treasures of modern dance. Yet the project is not a dance film, but a film about what is important in life and how we can cope with it. ja laajentanut esittävän taiteen käsitteitä. Ennennäkemättömissä arkisto-materiaaleissa nähdään otteita mm. Halprinin ensimmäisestä amerikka-laisesta monikulttuurisesta tanssiryhmästä sekä hänen teoksistaan. Viime vuoden Liikkeellä marraskuussa -festivaalilla nähdyn ja nyt uusintaesityk-seen yleisön pyynnöstä valitun dokumentin nimi on peräisin Halprinin itsensä suusta: hänen mukaansa tanssi on kuin ”breath made visible”, näkyväksi tehty hengitys.

Sveitsiläinen Ruedi Gerber on työskennellyt innovatiivisen Halprinin kanssa myös Seniors Rockin -nimisessä Breath Made Visiblen sisarteokses-sa, joka valmistui vuonna 2010. Dokumenteista on aistittavissa Gerberin ja Halprinin välinen lämmin suhde: he tapasivat ensimmäisen kerran jo 1980-luvun alussa. Suunnitteluprosessi Breath Made Visible -dokumentille käynnistyi niin ikään tuolloin. Gerber on työskennellyt ohjaajana, tuottajana, käsikirjoittajana ja aivan alunperin näyttelijänä. Hän on dokumenttien ohella ohjannut ja tuottanut palkittuja sarjoja.

The blog is a literary continuation to group discussions, where anyone is welcome to share thoughts on the festival programme and performing arts in general. Participants for the free audience workshop are selected through an open application process, which ended on September 16th, 2011.

Kulttuuriyhteistyö Ranskan ja Pohjoismaiden välillä on laajentunut vii-me vuosien aikana huomattavasti. FranceDanse going North on Institut français´n tukema ja useiden pohjoismaisten partnereiden yhteistyössä toteuttama kulttuuriprojekti. FranceDanse going North on osa suurem-paa Institut français'n hallinnoimaa sekä Ranskan ulkoministeriön tuke-maa FranceDanse -hanketta. Hanke on pyrkinyt edistämään ranskalaisen tanssin näkyvyyttä ja tunnettuvuutta maailmalla jo useamman vuoden ajan. Hankkeen puitteissa on toteutettu yhteistoimintaa- ja produktioita muunmuassa Itävallassa (2007), Sveitsissä (2008) sekä Kiinassa (2010).

The cultural exchange between France and the Nordic countries has increased in the past few years.FranseDance going North is a cultural co-operation project realized together with several Nordic partners with the support of Institut français. FranceDanse projects have been organized in several countries for example in Austria (2007), Switzerland (2008) and China (2010). FranceDanse aims to promote the richness and the diversity of French contemporary dance abroad, allowing a better visibility and touring of the companies in these areas.

Festivaalipassi / Festival pass 37 €

Henkilökohtaisella festivaalipassilla näet halutessasi kaikki viisi festivaalin esitystä. Ostettuasi passin sinun täytyy varata paikka haluamaasi esitykseen esityspaikasta. Esitykseen saapuessasi esität passin ovella lipunmyyjälle, joka antaa sinulle paikkalipun esitykseen. Paikkalippu tulee lunastaa viimeistään puoli tuntia ennen esityksen alkua. Passilla voit katsoa jokaisen festivaalin esityksen kerran. The festival pass is personal and you can see all five performances (but each performance only once). When you have purchased your festival pass you have to reserve your seat by calling the venues box office. You have to show your festival pass at the venue where you will get your seat ticket. The seat ticket must be claimed 30 minutes before the show.
