Tea che r & Par en t Con necti on In the town of Tombstone, Arizona is a very famous cemetary known as Boot Hill. On many tombstones from the days of the Wild West, the following grim words are read: “Hanged by mistake.” Justice in the Wild West was of the “shoot first and ask questions later” variety. One could question if this was “justice” at all!

But God’s justice is always perfect. In the words of Romans 6:23, we plainly see what is fair and right: “The wages of sin is death.” Because we all sin, we all deserve to die.

However, God’s love goes far beyond what is fair and right! Though we deserve death, He gives us life—Ultimate Life, eternal life—through His Son, Jesus. In John 3:17 we read the amazing words, “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” Though we de-serve condemnation and death, God gives us Ultimate Life—eternal life with Him in heaven.

Jesus died so that we can enjoy Ultimate Life. Christ was not “hanged by mistake,” though He was more innocent than those men buried in Boot Hill! Perhaps if there had been a tombstone for Jesus, His epitaph would have read, “Killed to bring life.”

Our Bible story is the wonderful story of how God saved the lives of the Israelites at Passover, and how through the final plague He delivered His people from slavery in Egypt. But more than that, this story mo-tivates us to consider anew the greatest deliverance made by the greatest deliverer, Jesus Christ, the final and perfect Passover Lamb.

Dirt Clod Art Provide several large bowls or plastic bins of dirt or sand. Children make drawings or random designs on sheets of construction paper using white glue. Then, children sprinkle dirt or sand over the top of the glue drawings. Finally, extra dirt or sand is poured and shaken off papers and back into the large bowls or storage bins. Children set aside their dirt and glue art pictures to dry.

Wes ter n Wea r RelayGet ready for a day of rootin’-tootin’ cowboy fun! Fill two cardboard boxes (“horse troughs”) with cowboy gear (cowboy hat, adult-sized boots, bandanna, fringed vest, large-buckled belt, etc.), placing the same types of items in each card-board box. Place boxes on one side of the play-ing area. Divide class into two teams. Teams line up opposite cardboard boxes on the other side of the playing area. Members of each team take turns running to their team’s cardboard box, tak-ing out and putting on all the items in the box, removing items, putting items back in the box and running back to their teams. The first team to finish the relay wins!

For Younger Children: Children put on only one item, remove item and run back to their teams.

Chili Con Ques o In a crockpot, com-bine a can of chili without beans and a package of pro-cessed cheese, cubed. Heat until cheese is melted, stirring oc-casionally. For each child, place tortilla chips in a paper or plastic bowl, and spoon chili con queso on top. You may wish to provide addi-tional toppings like shredded cheese, diced onion or tomatoes, etc.

Lesson 6

Int roducti on In our trunk today, we have something white and fluffy. Can you guess what it is? Children respond. Open trunk to remove stuffed or toy lamb. Today we’re going to hear about how lambs saved the lives of God’s people! Open trunk and remove printouts and Bible. Hold up Bible. We know today’s story is true because it’s in the Bible. Lead children to repeat words or phrases as indicated in story.

Tell th e Sto ryEvery time Moses told Pharaoh to let God’s people go, Phar-aoh said, “NO!” (Children repeat, “NO!”) And even though God had sent terrible bad things, called plagues, to Egypt, Pharaoh kept on saying, “NO!” (Children repeat, “NO!”)

God told Moses to tell Pharaoh there would be one more final plague. (Children repeat, “One more.”) This would be the very WORST plague of all! Moses went to the Pharaoh and told him that around midnight, every firstborn son in Egypt would die! (Children repeat, “Oh, no!”) Even the firstborn of the cattle would die. There would be sadness in Egypt, un-like any that had been seen before or would be seen again. (Children repeat, “So sad!”) Moses then told Pharaoh that God would keep all the Israelites safe. Not one Israelite boy would die! (Children repeat, “Yay!”)

Next God gave Moses instructions to keep the Israelites safe from the final plague. (Children repeat, “Safe.”) God said, “The man in charge of each family is to take a perfect one-year-old male lamb and kill it. (Hold up stuffed or toy lamb.) Then take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops around the door. (Children repeat, “The door.”) Roast the meat over the fire so that you can eat it along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. If you have anything left over, burn it. (Children repeat, “No leftovers.”) Dress like you are ready to leave on a trip at any moment! Tell them to

eat quickly (Children repeat, “Eat quickly.”); it is the Lord’s Passover.” (Children repeat, “Passover.”)

The meal was called the “Passover” because the Israelites would be “passed over” when death came to the Egyptians. All of the Israelites would be saved! (Children repeat, “Yay!”) God told the Israelites that they are to celebrate the Passover every year, and to this day, their descendants do!

Then the Israelites bowed down and worshiped God. (Children repeat, “Worshiped God.”) They were so grateful for God’s good plan! The Israelites did exactly as they had been told. The Israelites carefully spread the lamb’s blood on the sides and tops of the doors. The lamb’s meat was roasted over the fire. The families gathered together to eat their special meal, the Passover. (Children repeat, “Passover.”)

After eating, the families all stayed inside their homes, as they’d been told, and waited for the long night to be over.

At midnight, all the firstborn sons in Egypt died! The people were so sad! (Children repeat, “So sad!”) Pharaoh and all his men and all of the Egyptian people got up during the night, and began to cry, for in each and every house, some-one had died.

(Show Lesson 6 Bible Story Art.) It was still nighttime when Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron to come before him. “GO!” Pharaoh cried. (Children repeat, “GO!”) “Leave! You and all the Israelites!” And with that, the Israelites were finally freed from slavery in Egypt!

God’s Wor d & MeGod saved the lives of the Israelites during the Passover and God wants to give us life, too. The Bible tells us, “God gives us eternal life in Jesus.” God loves us and He wants us to have Ultimate Life. Show “Ultimate Life” printout and read aloud. Jesus made a way for us to become members of God’s family. When we become members of God’s fam-ily, we will live forever with Jesus in heaven. Pray briefly, Dear Jesus, thank You for making a way for us to become members of God’s family. We want to have Ultimate Life and live with You forever in heaven. We love You! In Your name, amen.

Lesson 6

Int roducti on When have you gone on a trip with your family? Where did you go? What did you to do get ready for your trip? Volunteers respond. Today we’re going to hear about how God instructed His people to prepare for a very long trip!

Tell th e Sto ryPharaoh, king of Egypt, still refused to obey God and let the Israelite slaves go free. Even though his country had suffered through several plagues, including the Nile River turned to blood, insects, frogs, dead animals, boils, hailstorms and even darkness, Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let God’s people go.

So God told Moses there would be one final plague—the worst plague of all! God said, “After this plague, Pharaoh will let the people go free once and for all! Tell the people to ask the Egyptian people for anything made of silver or gold.” The Egyptians liked the Israelites and Moses, too. God made sure that the Egyptians would give His people everything they asked for.

Moses went to the Pharaoh and told him what the final plague would be. “Around midnight, every firstborn son in Egypt will die! From your own firstborn son to the firstborn son of the slave girl, and even the firstborn of the cattle will die. There will be sadness in Egypt, unlike any that has been seen before or will be seen again. But every Israelite son will be safe!” Moses then went on to tell Pharaoh that this will be the final plague and that after this, Pharaoh WILL let God’s people go. Then, Moses left Pharaoh.

Do you think Pharaoh believed Moses? Why or why not? God had said to Moses, “Pharaoh will refuse to listen to you.” Despite all the amazing signs and wonders Moses and Aaron had shown Pharaoh, he would not let the Israelites go free.

Next God gave Moses some very special instructions for the Israelites to follow, so that they would be safe from the final plague. God said, “Tell the Israelites, that the man in charge of each family is to take a perfect one-year-old male lamb and kill it. After killing the lambs, take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses. Then roast the meat over the fire. That night, the family is to eat the meat along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. If you have anything left over, burn it. And when the people eat, they are to wear their cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand—like they are ready to leave on a trip at any mo-ment! Tell them to eat quickly; it is the Lord’s Passover.”

The reason God called it the “Passover” is because His plan was that on that same night, He would have every first-born male son in Egypt killed. But the lamb’s blood on the doorframes would be a sign that God’s people lived in that house, and death would “pass over” that house as it moved through Egypt.

In Exodus 12:14, read what God wanted the Israelites to do. God told Moses to instruct the people to keep this day as a holiday in the future. As part of the celebration, for seven days after having the Passover meal again, they would eat only bread made without yeast. Also, for those seven days, the people were to do no work at all, except to prepare food to eat. God said it was to be called the Feast of Unleavened Bread (“unleavened” means the bread was made without any yeast), and to this day, the Jewish people still celebrate the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. God wanted it to be a celebration every year so that the people would re-member how He delivered them from slavery in Egypt.

Moses did exactly what God told him to do. First, he called all the Israelite leaders together and told them about every man finding a perfect lamb for his family. He told them about killing the lamb and spreading some of the blood on the sides and tops of their doorframes. Then Moses said, “No one should go out the door of the house until morning. Stay inside where you will be safe! When God goes through Egypt, he will see the blood on the doorframe and will pass over that house. He will not permit death to enter your houses and kill anyone.”

Moses then went on to tell the people about God’s plan for them to have this Passover meal and celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread every year from now on. Even after they were in the land that God promised to give them, they and their families were to continue the celebration as a way to remember how God had rescued them from slavery in Egypt.

Then the people bowed down and worshiped God. They were so grateful for what He was planning to do for them! What do you think the Israelites did next? Read Exodus 12:28 to find out. The Israelites did exactly as they had been told. The fathers of all the families went out and got a per-fect one-year-old lamb. Those whose families were too small for a whole lamb of their own shared with another family. They knew there were to be no leftovers.

The lambs were killed and the blood carefully painted over the sides and tops of the doorframes and the meat was roasted over the fire. The families gathered together to eat their meat, the bitter herbs, which was to remind them of the bitterness of slavery, and the unleavened bread. The reason they ate unleavened bread was because it takes a long time to make bread with yeast. And this meal was to remind them of how quickly they would have to leave Egypt.

After eating, the families all stayed inside their homes, as they’d been instructed, and settled down to wait for the long night to be over.

At midnight, God struck down all the firstborn sons in Egypt, from Pharaoh’s son to the firstborn of the prisoners in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well. Pharaoh and all his men and all the rest of the Egyptian people got up during the night, and began to cry, for in every house, someone had died.

It was still nighttime when Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron to come before him. “Go!” Pharaoh cried. “Leave! You and all the Israelites!” And with that, the Israelites were fi-nally freed from slavery in Egypt!

God’s Wor d & MeShow “Ultimate Life” printout. Through a long night of death for the Egyptians, God protected the lives of His people.

The lives of God’s people were saved by using the blood of a lamb. Our lives can also be saved by the blood of a lamb—Jesus! In the New Testament, Jesus is described as “the Lamb of God” (John 1:29) and the “Passover Lamb” (1 Corinthians 5:7). Jesus is the perfect, sinless, one and only Son of God. And just like the Israelites killed lambs at the Passover, Jesus was killed and his blood spilt, too. Jesus died to take the punishment for all our sins. But Jesus didn’t stay dead! Because He died and rose again, we can become members of God’s family and enjoy Ultimate Life—life in heaven with Jesus forever! (Invite children interested in knowing more about becoming members of God’s family to talk with you or another teacher after class. See “Leading a Child to Christ” on p. 12.)

Read Romans 6:23 aloud from your Bible. “Eternal life” means life that never ends. When our verse talks about eter-nal life, it’s talking about how we can have Ultimate Life with Jesus in heaven forever!

What were the instructions God told Moses to give the Israelites? (To kill a lamb and spread the blood on the sides and tops of the doorframe. To eat a special meal. Not to go out of the house the night of the Passover.)

What did God tell the Israelites to do again every year? (Celebrate the Passover. Eat only unleavened bread for seven days after the Passover celebration.)

What did Pharaoh (FINALLY) do? (Set God’s people free.)

Why is Jesus sometimes called the Lamb of God, or Passover Lamb? (Jesus’ death and resurrection make it possible for anyone who believes in Him to escape from the punishment for sin, death.)

What are some of the ways Jesus has shown His love for us? Children respond. The best, most important way Jesus showed that He loved us was by dying on the cross so that we could become members of God’s family. Close in prayer, thanking Jesus that we can have Ultimate Life by becoming members of God’s family.

3. Set sheep aside to dry.

Talk Abou t

JR, you are doing a great job of covering your sheep with wool. Do you know the name for a baby sheep? (Lamb.) We heard about lambs in today’s Bible story!

The Bible uses the word “Lamb” to describe Jesus and the way He made a way for us to become members of God’s family. Our Bible verse today tells us about a gift that is given to every member of God’s family. Read Romans 6:23 aloud. Our verse says that members of God’s family get eternal life. That means we will live with God forever in heaven!

Pray, Dear God, thank You for sending Your Lamb, Jesus, so that we can become members of Your family. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For Olde r Childre nChildren fold sheets of construction paper in half to make cards, and write the words to Romans 6:23 on the inside of the cards. Talk Abou t

Today we’re making pictures we can hang up to remind us that God sent Jesus to give us Ultimate Life as mem-bers of His family. What did Jesus have to do so that we could become members of God’s family? (Died on a cross and rose again. Paid the price for our sins.)

When you have become a member of God’s family, what can you do to show God how much you appreciate what Jesus did for you? (Obey Him. Tell others about Jesus. Thank Him.)

Ask a child to read Romans 6:23 aloud to the class. When we’ve done wrong, what’s the good news in Romans 6:23? (God loves us so much that He made a way we can have the gift of eternal life through Jesus’ death and resurrection.)

Ask for a volunteer to lead the children in a prayer, thank-ing God for sending Jesus to save us from the penalty of our sins.

For You nger Childre nChildren use markers and stickers to decorate pieces of con-struction paper. Children glue craft sticks onto the edges of their papers to make a frame.

Lesson 6

Wor ship Cen ter Exodus 11:1—12:32

Coll ectBibles, Wrangler Roundup CD-ROM and CD player, song charts (pp. 248, 253), large sheets of paper, masking tape, marker, five balloons; Optional: white board, dry-erase markers

Pre par eTape large sheets of paper to wall. (Optional: Instead of large sheets of paper, use a white board and dry-erase markers.) Inflate balloons and knot to secure.

Tea m GameLead children in a game like Pictionary. Ask for a volunteer to begin the game. Whisper to the volunteer the name of something that is seen in a Wild-West town (horse, stage-coach, cowboy, horseshoe, bale of hay, lantern, Sheriff’s badge, cowboy boot, etc.). Volunteer draws item on paper or white board. Other children try to guess the item. (Optional: Divide group into teams. Which ever team guesses the item first scores a point.)

Bible Ver se GameRepeat Romans 6:23 aloud with children. Let’s play a game to help us remember this verse. Children stand in a circle and tap balloon, trying to keep it in the air. If the balloon falls to the floor, children take turns saying one word of the Bible verse, starting with the child who dropped the balloon. (The first child will say, “For,” and the second child will say “the,” and so on.) Keep adding balloons to make each round more difficult.

Son gYou, or another leader, lead children in singing “Go Down, Mo,” adding motions and/or clapping if desired.

Prayer Today we’ve been talking about Ultimate Life—life forever with Jesus in heaven! God gives Ultimate Life to all the members of His family. Briefly tell about the time you ac-cepted God’s gift of eternal life by becoming a member of God’s family. Close prayer time by thanking God for promis-ing to provide a way for us to be forgiven for our sins and to live with Him forever. Talk with interested children about becoming members of God’s family. See “Leading a Child to Christ” on page 12.

Son gYou, or another leader, lead children in singing “Psalm 57:9-10,” adding motions and/or clapping if desired. It’s because God loves us so much that He sent Jesus to make the way for us to have Ultimate Life!
