Athletics Partners,

Though it seems a long time ago now, the 2009-10 academic and athletic year for Lehigh was one worthy of remembering, and even more importantly, it was a year to build upon in so many ways. Our teams achieved competitive success in terms of the aggregate winning percentage at the highest rate in the past twenty years. Led by league championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in men’s and women’s basketball, 16 Lehigh teams finished in the top half of the league and seven teams participated in NCAA championship competition. Ten of our student-athletes and two of our coaches were honored with major (“player of the year/coach of the year”) awards. Six of those ten student-athlete award honorees return to our teams, so there is a great foundation for continued competitive success. These athletics achievements were not accomplished at the expense of academic performance. Our aggregate student-athlete GPA was 3.11 and 17 of 23 teams had a team GPA of greater than 3.0. Five Lehigh student-athletes were named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for their sport, the highest total ever for a single year. One of those, Marquis Hall in men’s basketball, was named as one of ten national finalists for the top national award for scholarship/leadership/service. These achievements have become the standard expectation among all of our teams. Leadership, service and community involvement also continued to be hallmarks of the Lehigh student-athlete experience with more than half of all athletes engaged actively in such programming. Distinction was earned on campus by our student-athletes who were honored among all Lehigh students with the University’s top leadership, service, and undergraduate merit awards. Campus

Athletics programming (Club sports, IMs, and Recreation) also reflected an all-time high level of participation and achievement. Our alumni have also answered the call to action. Sport-specific alumni partnership organizations have taken a strong foothold and are beginning to function in ways that enrich the experience for student-athletes and for the alumni that become engaged. The sport-specific partnerships that have been formed have “raised the bar” in terms of alumni involvement with, and support for, our programs and have provided significantly increased opportunities for alumni to re-engage with Lehigh. These successes are owed fully to strong alumni leadership and an enhanced level of awareness about the importance to program successes of growing alumni participation levels in annual support. Challenges remain, of course. There is a lot of financial pressure for all of us which makes ever more important the focus we place on prioritizing and managing carefully and creatively. Many traditional revenue streams (ticket sales, corporate support, camps income) are comparatively depressed from their highest (or even normal) levels. With more than half of every dollar spent on direct expenses coming from departmentally-generated sources, the premium on achieving a high level of Athletics Partnership participation has never been greater. With Partnership giving essentially flat in 09-10 relative to the previous two years, we have room for improvement and cause for optimism regarding the difference such improvement can make for our teams and programs. So please know that in the quest for consistency in achieving our academic, competitive, and student development goals, YOU are the real difference makers. For those of you who have been involved, we extend our sincere gratitude for your loyalty and your generosity. For those not yet on-board, please join the team investing in the educational experience of some really special leaders of tomorrow.

With our enthusiastic appreciation,Joe Sterrett

Our student-athletes continue to demonstrate their understanding that competing in the classroom is critical to their overall development. They also demonstrate that they take lessons of preparation, competition, and commitment to goals from their athletic experience and apply them to their academic life. It seems to be working! In the 2009-2010 academic year, the GPA’s of our student-athletes were comparable to those of our students in general. For the Fall 2009 semester, the average GPA of our Lehigh students was 3.13. For our student-athletes, it was 3.12. For the Spring 2010 semester, the average GPA of our Lehigh students was 3.14. The average for our student-athletes was 3.11. We (the members of the Athletics Department) monitor the academic results of our student-athletes very carefully. After all, it is only through their commitment to academics and athletics that they develop most completely.

The Naperville, Ill., native led the Mountain Hawks with a 4.0 grade point average and was a multi-year member of the Dean’s List and the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Marquis hall ’10 put together one of the finest careers for a Lehigh basketball player in school annals. And his accomplishments off the court were every bit as impressive. The Portland, Ore., native was named to the national 2010 Lowe’s All-Senior All-America Team. A three-time, All-Patriot League selection and two-time Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year, Hall also was named Lehigh’s Graduating Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the most prestigious award given by the athletics department. He is the first player in league history to total 1,500 points and 500 assists and leaves Lehigh as the all-time leader in assists with 566. A finance major, Hall graduated with a 3.39 grade point average and was also an active member of Lehigh’s award-winning C.O.A.C.H. program (community outreach) and a multi-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

There were plenty of other academic achievements reached and awards won, on team, league, and national levels in 2009-2010. Unfortunately, there were too many to name in this publication. Hopefully, however, through the accomplishments listed above, you can bear witness to the following: • We continue to recruit student-athletes who are just as strong academically as they are athletically.• Our student-athletes mirror the rest of our student body in terms of academic capability, drive, and performance.• Our student-athletes care about their academics as much as they care about their athletics.• We (the Athletics Department) monitor and measure the academic progress and performance of our student-athletes as much as we monitor their athletic progress and performance.• Our entire league (the Patriot League) is of like mind when it comes to academics.• We display academic achievements so they are visible to our student-athletes The visibility of academic achievements, when coupled with the competitive nature of our student-athletes, motivates our student-athletes to make the grade!

on the field, in the pool, on the court … wherever they were, lehigh athletes were successful in setting new records, winning awards and making the Brown and White proud. Across all sports, Lehigh’s athletic teams posted a winning percentage of almost 60 percent, an eight percent increase over last year. Within the Patriot League, that number climbed to 62 percent. Lehigh turned its rivalry over Lafayette into a one-sided affair, winning 75 percent (16-of-24) of all competitions, including the football team’s second straight win over the Leopards, and the men’s basketball team’s thrilling victory in the Patriot League Championship game. Three Lehigh teams: men’s basketball, women’s basketball and women’s lacrosse, won Patriot League regular season cham-pionships, with both basketball squads adding tournament crowns. For the women’s basketball team, it marked their second straight regular season and tourna-ment title. In all, 16 out of our 24 teams finished in the top four in the Patriot League (or the EIWA, in wrestling). Both Mountain Hawk basketball teams participated in the NCAA tournament, as Lehigh was one of just seven Division I programs to have its men’s and women’s programs earn their conference’s auto-matic bid. In addition, the wrestling team sent seven wrestlers to the NCAA Champion-ships in Omaha, Nebraska as the Moun-tain Hawks returned to the top-20 and crowned their first All-American since 2006 with a third place finish from Zach Rey ‘12 at heavyweight.

The cross country and track and field teams also competed at NCAA Regional championship meets. A number of Lehigh student-athletes earned recognition on the National, Regional and Patriot League level for their accomplishments throughout the 2009-10 academic year. Linebacker Matt Cohen ‘10 from the football team earned All-America honors from four different organizations, and became Lehigh’s first Associated Press All-American since 2004. The Patriot League’s defensive Player of the Year in 2009, Cohen finished his Lehigh career with 177 tackles, 18.5 sacks and 44 tackles-for-loss. He was joined on the AP All-America team by offensive lineman Will Rackley ’11, who was named to the third team. Much of the success of Lehigh’s men’s basketball team was due to the success of its backcourt, led by Marquis Hall ’10 and C.J. McCollum ’13. Hall was nominated for the Bob Cousy Award, given to the top collegiate male guard and was a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award as well as a member of the Lowe’s senior All-America Team. McCollum put together one of the finest freshman seasons of any athlete in any sport in Lehigh history. He became the first Patriot League basketball student-athlete to be named Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the same season. McCollum was an honorable mention As-sociated Press All-American and received numerous Freshman All-America honors in the spring of 2010. On the regional level, the men’s soccer team had a pair of NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region selections in Adam

Welch ’10 (first team) and Adam Gazda ’09 (third team). Welch was the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and helped propel the Mountain Hawks back into the Patriot League tournament. Evans Kosgei ’11 of the cross country team earned All-Region honors from the USTFCCCA with his 17th place finish at the Mid-Atlantic regional qualifier, the highest for a Lehigh runner in the current format. Kosgei finished second at the Patriot League Championships and was named the league’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s cross country. In track and field, Khalil Uqdah ’10 won his second career IC4A title in the pole vault. He also won his second Patriot League title, clearing 17-feet, 3.5-inches to set a new league championship indoor record in the event. Field hockey standout Kim Eng ’13 was another Lehigh freshman who dazzled in her first year in the Brown and White. The Patriot League’s leading scorer was named Patriot League Rookie of the Year and added second team All-Mideast honors from the NFHCA. Lehigh’s softball program continued to be one of the top programs in the north-east, with its tenth straight 30-plus win season. Two Mountain Hawks, pitcher Tiffany Curtis ’10 and first baseman Julie Fernandez ’12, were named to the NFCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region team after garnering major Patriot League awards. Curtis was named Patriot League Pitcher of the Year, while Fernandez was the league’s Player of the Year after hitting a league-best .442 with 14 doubles. At the Patriot League level, Lehigh had a pair of Rookies of the Year and eight

Player of the Year award winners. Captain Troy List ’11 became Lehigh’s first ever Player of the Year in men’s tennis as Le-high’s top singles and doubles performer. Lauren Dykstra enjoyed another spec-tacular season on the lacrosse field, which culminated in her being named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year. Dykstra has now won Offensive Player, Defensive Player and Rookie of the Year awards from the league in her first three seasons. Emma Melendez ’12 from the volleyball team rounds out the major award winners for the Mountain Hawks as the libero was named Defensive Player of the Year. In addition, Lehigh had 37 student-athletes named to the All-Patriot League first team and 41 selected to the second team.

The 6-foot 3 guard was named to Rivals.com Non-Big Six Freshman All-America First Team, the NABC All-District First Team, an ECAC Third-Team All-Star, the ECAC’s Rookie of the Year, and made history when he became the first player ever to be named the Patriot League’s Player and Rookie of the Year in the same season. Named to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team, McCollum led the Mountain Hawks in scoring at 19.1 points per game, with his 631 points being the most scored by a freshman in Lehigh and Patriot League history. The Canton, Ohio, native also averaged 5.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.3 steals while shooting 42 percent from three-point range and 81 percent at the foul line.

The Allentown native, who was named the Graduating Male Athlete of the Year by Lehigh’s athletics department, was also named a Second Team pick by the Associated Press. The highly talented linebacker and senior captain became Lehigh’s first First Team All-America since 2004, as he led the Patriot League in sacks (9.0) and tackles-for-loss (13.5) in 2009, marking the second consecutive season he accomplished that feat. The 2009 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, Cohen wrapped up his Lehigh career with 177 total tackles, 18.5 sacks and 44 tackles-for-loss. He was the first Lehigh player to earn two First-Team All-America selections in the same season since tight end Adam Bergen in 2004.

The school record holder in the indoor and outdoor pole vault, the Baltimore native won a second IC4A championship in his senior year. While competing for Lehigh, Uqdah also won two Patriot League titles as well as the indoor league record in the event. in The coMMuniTyLehigh’s award-winning C.O.A.C.H. (Community Outreach by Athletes who Care about Helping) program continues to serve the Southside Bethlehem community, organizing more than 30 events during the 2009-2010 academic year that connect with local, middle, and high school students. The newest venture for C.O.A.C.H. is the collaboration with St. Luke’s Hospital and the creation of the Reading Rocks program. This new program connects student-athletes with Donegan Elementary School students in Bethlehem in an effort to emphasize the importance of reading and academics. Within one year of supporting Read-ing Rocks, PSSA test scores improved dramatically. “Not only did grades three, four, and five make great gains but grades two and one were the best they had ever been,” stated Sonia Vazquez, principal at Donegan. Annual reports showed that in the 2008 school year, only 38 percent of the students scored at a proficient level. After tireless efforts by teachers and the implementation of Reading Rocks, 68 percent of students were proficient in 2009. “This vast improvement could not have been possible without the dedication and compassion of the teachers, adminis-trators, and our student-athletes.” “The Reading Rocks program had such

a successful first year because the student-athletes who volunteered were able to connect with the elementary students one-on-one and most importantly helped make reading fun,” stated Julie Kuhns ’10, a member of the field hockey team. “It’s amazing to see how donating a few hours a week toward the program can really change a child’s outlook on reading and education, in general.” At the conclusion of each semester, Donegan students were rewarded for their efforts. In addition to the Reading Rocks program, C.O.A.C.H. program participants also raised more than $2,000 for The Miracle League of the Lehigh Valley and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation through their Breakfast for a Buck program. The late-night breakfast, which was hosted once per semester, served more than 750 hungry students. The 11th annual Adopt-A-Family event continued with C.O.A.C.H. support. For this program, Lehigh Athletics teams and other campus organizations are responsible for adopting families in need from the Bethlehem community. Throughout the first semester, the teams raise money to buy gifts and necessities for the families. This year Lehigh Athletics raised $32,553 for the needy families.

The women’s basketball team captured its second straight Patriot League Championship, with point guard erica Prosser ’11 serving as one of the main catalysts for the Mountain Hawks championship run. Prosser earned first team All-Patriot League honors for the second straight season, leading the league in assists (4.3 per game) and steals (2.7), while topping the Mountain Hawks in scoring, at 13.9 points per game. Prosser netted her 1,000th career point in a win over Akron in early January. A former Patriot League Player of the Year, Prosser helped lead Lehigh to a school-record 29-4 record and Lehigh’s floor general helped the Mountain Hawks extend their record home-winning streak to 33 games. The Pittsburgh native’s impact can be felt off the court as well, where she serves as Lehigh’s executive representative for the Student Athletes Leading Social Change program. In July, Prosser spent ten days with SALSC members from 11 schools across the country, building schools in Kenya.

After leading Lehigh to a second place regular season finish, baseball coach Sean Leary was named 2010 Patriot League Coach of the Year. For Leary, this is his second Coach of the Year award, after receiving the honor in 2006. Leary led Lehigh to its most league victories (12) since the 2006 Mountain Hawks secured the number-two seed in the league tournament. Lehigh, which was picked to finish last in the Patriot League preseason poll, won three of its five league series, including a four-game sweep of Lafayette. A former starter at shortstop for Lehigh, Sean Leary completed his 19th season with the baseball program and his 15th as head coach. His 272 career wins rank second in program history.

Women’s lacrosse coach Jill Redfern was also named Patriot League Coach of the Year, the second such honor of her career and her first at Lehigh. Redfern guided the Mountain Hawks to their first Patriot League regular season championship and a school record-tying 14 victories. Redfern, who was named head coach in 2008 after previously serving as associate head coach of the program, considered the recognition a true team award, crediting her assistant coaches and staff for their efforts in Lehigh’s successful season. Redfern has been a part of four straight Patriot League Tournament appearances with the Mountain Hawks (two as an associate head coach and the the past two as head coach).

For the second time in his career, Kevin Cassese is a World Champion. The Lehigh head coach co-captained the United States to a 12-10 win over arch rival Canada to capture the gold medal at the FIL World Championships in Manchester, England in July. With the win the United States captured its first World Championship since 2002, where Cassese earned his first gold medal. In seven games in England, Cassese had four goals and an assist for Team USA. His best performance came in the final pool play game against Japan, a 19-5 U.S. win, where the co-captain scored three goals and was named Player of the Game by Team USA head coach Mike Pressler. The end of the World Championships marked the end of Cassese’s playing career as the Lehigh head coach was able to go out on top, with a world title.

Mike BroWn

One of just two four-time All-Americans in Lehigh wrestling history, Mike Brown was the first to accomplish the feat, doing so in four straight seasons from 1977-1980. In addition, Brown is one of only eight four-time champions in the 106-year history of the EIWA. An accomplished pinner, Brown ranks third in school annals with 36 career falls and at the time of his graduation, the Bethlehem native held the school record for career wins (95) and bonus wins (67). Brown burst onto the scene as a true freshman, going 26-3 and winning an EIWA Championship at 177 before placing fifth at the NCAA tournament. The next season, Brown moved up to 190, where he again went 26-3, this time with 13 falls and 20 bonus victories. He captured his second EIWA title and earned his second straight All-America honor with a third place finish. In that tournament Brown defeated Fred Bohna of UCLA 8-0 to earn All-America status, the first of four career impressive victories for Brown over NCAA Champions. In 1979, Brown captured his third EIWA Championship and enjoyed the best NCAA finish of his career as he placed second

at 190, losing to Eric Wais of Oklahoma State in the finals. Brown finished the year with a mark of 21-3. In his senior season Brown went 22-3 and captured his fourth EIWA Championship and won the Fletcher Memorial Trophy for the most team points scored in his EIWA career in the first Eastern tournament held at Stabler Arena. In his final NCAA Championship, Brown battled through injuries to place seventh, earning his fourth All-American medal to finish his career with an impressive 95-12 mark. Since graduating from Lehigh in 1980 with a degree in Biology, Brown spent over 25 years as a pharmacist at Newhard Pharmacy in Northampton, Pa., and for the last two years has worked at Rite Aid Pharmacy in Hellertown, Pa. Brown and his wife Diane have three children: Michael, Shayne and Isabel. A two-year team captain, Brown was one of 13 children and the second of four Brown brothers to wrestle for the Brown and White, joining Charlie ’78, Pat ’82 and Bernie ’86. Bernie won two EIWA titles in his career to pull the Browns even with the Liebermans for the most EIWA titles won by a family at Lehigh (six).

Phil sTaMBaugh

One of the best quarterbacks in school history, Phil Stambaugh has his name all over the Lehigh record book following a terrific career that saw him throw for 10,575 yards and 78 touchdowns. During his time in the Brown and White, which spanned 1996-1999, Stambaugh led Lehigh to 31 victories, including an undefeated regular season in 1998 as well as two playoff appearances and a playoff road victory over Richmond. The record setting star entered the starting lineup with four games remaining in his freshman season and wound up completing nearly 55% of his passes for 967 yards and eight touchdowns. In the final game of that season, Stambaugh led the Mountain Hawks back from a 19-6 halftime deficit to defeat archrival Lafayette 23-19 and, in the process, became the first freshman to earn the MVP trophy in the storied rivalry.Stambaugh threw for 2,586 yards and 23 touchdowns, while completing over 60% of his passes as a sophomore to earn Second Team All-Patriot League honors. He led the league in passing and total offense that season and once again led the Brown and White past Lafayette, this time by a score of 43-31. During his junior season Stambaugh unleashed an aerial assault on opponents, as he completed 66% of his passes and totaled 3,121 yards and 22 touchdowns. He went on to be named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year as well as an All-League pick and an ECAC All-Star. With Stambaugh leading the way, the Mountain Hawks captured their third Patriot League championship that season and defeated a tough Richmond squad in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA I-AA playoffs. Lehigh, which handed Lafayette a 31-7 defeat to complete its undefeated regular season, finished the year with a national ranking of seventh. As a senior, Stambaugh led the Mountain Hawks to ten more victories, including another win over rival Lafayette,

as well as their second consecutive Patriot League crown and I-AA playoff appearance. Stambaugh completed a career-best 68% of his passes for 2,995 yards and 26 touchdowns and earned All-America accolades from Don Hansen Weekly Football Gazette as well as his second straight selection to the ECAC All-Star Team. Stambaugh was also a finalist for the Walter Payton Award that season and was selected to the Kelly Tire Blue-Gray All-Star Game. Stambaugh holds the Lehigh career record for pass completions, completion percentage, passing yardage and touchdown passes and the single season record for completion percentage. He is also in the top-five in Patriot League history in career passing yards, passing yards per game, pass attempts, pass completions and passing touchdowns. During his career Stambaugh passed for 400 or more yards on two occasions, 300 or more nine times and 200 or more in 13 games. Stambaugh earned seven varsity letters while at Lehigh including four in football and another three in baseball. Following his time at Lehigh Stambaugh spent time with a number of professional teams including the Buffalo Bills, New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL), the Rhein Fire and Berlin Thunder of NFL Europe and the New Haven Ninjas of the Arena League. Stambaugh graduated from Lehigh in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in History and following his playing days he entered the business world where he currently serves as President of Screen PAC/Pennsylvania Avenue Sports and Vice President of PMC316, Inc and he also owns a Rita’s Water Ice franchise. Stambaugh has also continued to work in the game of football where he serves as the Head Coach at his alma mater, Pius X High School in Roseto, Pennsylvania.

anne Tierney

Anne Tierney had arguably the greatest career of any women’s basketball player in Lehigh history, setting the school record for points with 1,807 and the school and Patriot League record with 1,129 rebounds. She was the first female in league annals to earn First Team All-Patriot League honors all four seasons of her career and was a two time recipient of the league’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for the sport of women’s basketball. In 2000 Tierney earned the Patriot League’s Rookie of the Year award following a year in which she put together one of the most dominant seasons in Lehigh basketball history. Tierney averaged 18.5 points and 9.7 rebounds, while shooting a then-school record 55.6% from the floor and 78% at the foul line. She scored a career-high 35 points vs. Holy Cross and posted ten double-doubles throughout the season on her way to becoming the first freshman in Patriot League history to receive First Team All-League recognition. Tierney also received the John S. Steckbeck Award, given annually to the top freshman female student-athlete in the Lehigh Athletics Department. As a sophomore Tierney became the fastest player in Lehigh history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark as she totaled 522 points on the season, good for an average of 17.4 per contest. She also ripped down a school record 335 rebounds, and her 11.2 rebounds per game average ranked eighth in the nation and remains a school record. In addition, Tierney recorded 19 double-doubles en route to a second straight First Team All-League selection. Her 21 rebounds at Navy in February of 2001 established a new Lehigh record and remains tied for the all-time Patriot League mark. Tierney then averaged 14.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per game as a junior, totaling 14 double-doubles throughout the course of the season. She sank a career-best 24 three-pointers that year and became Lehigh’s

all-time leading rebounder in a win over American in January of 2002. During her final season in the Brown and White Tierney posted averages of 12.7 points and 9.3 rebounds while shooting 81% at the foul line and recording 11 double-doubles. Tierney was honored with her fourth consecutive First Team All-League honor, becoming the first women’s basketball player to accomplish that feat, and she was the first player in school history to eclipse 1,500 career points and 1,000 rebounds. Tierney was a two-time captain for Lehigh and tied or established seven school records during her career, including total points, total rebounds (Patriot League record), free throw attempts, made free throws, single season field goal percentage, single season rebounds (Patriot League record) and single season points per game average. She is one of only two Lehigh women’s basketball players to have her jersey number honored with a banner hanging in the rafters at Stabler Arena. Tierney excelled off the floor as well, graduating with a 3.90 grade point average as an Economics and Finance major. She was a Presidential Scholar, member of the Dean’s List every semester at Lehigh, a four time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, a three time Academic All-District selection and the recipient of the Lehigh Athletics Department’s Scholar Athlete award, as well as Lehigh University’s Service Award and Undergraduate Merit Award. Following graduation Tierney remained at Lehigh and earned her master’s degree in Economics before embarking on a career in finance in New York City, working at Standard & Poor’s Corporate Value Consulting Practice. Following her time in New York Tierney moved to Connecticut where she began working for Meridian Flexibility and currently she serves as President of Innovative Body Solutions where she and her business partner created The Ki-Hara Method of Resistance Stretching.

Brian joined Lehigh this year as the Steven J. ’69 and Karen A. Lee Head Rowing Coach. His last four seasons were spent as the assistant varsity coach, recruiting coordinator and the head freshman coach for the lightweight crew at Dartmouth College. At Lehigh, he will be responsible for the oversight of women’s and men’s rowing programs and will coach the women’s varsity boats. In four years at Dartmouth, Conley assisted varsity crews at the Ivy League Championships and the Eastern Sprints Championships. In three of his four seasons, Conley’s first freshmen eights reached the grand finals at the Eastern Sprints. While assisting at Dartmouth, Conley also served as head coach for the competitive women’s rowing program at the Upper Valley Rowing Club in New Hampshire. His crews posted four top-ten finishes at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta. Prior to his stint at Dartmouth, Conley, a Philadelphia area native, served as the head rowing coach for the men’s and women’s programs at Lower Merion High School. In just three years Conley turned a program that lost every race to one that medaled in major championships including gold and bronze medals at the 2006 Scholastic National Championships. Conley also enjoyed an impressive competitive career on the water. After a standout career at Saint Joseph’s Preparatory School, Conley attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a four-year oarsman including three years on the first varsity eight. caMPus aThleTics

It was another year of growth, achievement, fitness and fun within our Campus Athletics program. Campus Athletics is the label placed over our Club Sports, Intramural Sports, and Fitness & Recreation programs. In the Club Sports area, four new clubs (Aquatics, Badminton, Squash, and Weightlifting/Fitness) were formed in the fall of 2009, taking our total club program count to 37! Club Sports now involve approximately 1,000 participants, which is over 20% of our undergraduate student population. A number of programs were quite competitive and successful:

• Men’s Rugby qualified for regional playoffs.• Men’s and Women’s Skiing finished second in the USCSA Regional Championships, which qualified them for “Nationals” in Sunday River, Maine.• Men’s Volleyball finished first in the Mid-Atlantic College Volleyball Conference.• Men’s Ultimate Frisbee qualified for the Division III (schools under 75,000 enrollment). National Tournament in Appleton, WI and finished in 5th place.

Our Intramural program was as robust as ever! Eleven different programs involved approximately 2,800 participants over 953 scheduled events and 97 days of programming. A few examples of this extraordinary amount of activity are:

• Flag Football – 46 teams; Highest # of teams in 10 years.• Arena Football – 21 teams; First year of this offering; Played in Grace Hall.

• Soccer – 57 teams; Second highest # of teams in 10 years.• Volleyball – 44 teams; Fourth highest # of teams in 10 years.• Turkey Trot – 270 runners.• Dodgeball – 40 teams; Up 6 teams from last year.

For the 2009-2010 year, the standouts were:

• Phi Sigma Kappa – Upper-class Greek All University winner• Culo Grande – Upper-class Independent All University winner• Rebels – Women All University winner• Dravo 23 – Freshman All University winner• Intramural Managers of the Year: o Larry Shulman, Phi Sigma Kappa o Naomi David, Alpha Gamma Delta

The Welch Fitness Center remains open to students, faculty, and staff over 16 hours per day on most days and 294 days per year. Daily traffic into the center ranges from 200-235 people on Saturdays and Sundays to 315-325 people per day Monday through Friday. The Fitness Center also offers various instructional programs and group fitness sessions. Among them are: • Group Exercise – Jazzercise, Kickboxing, Hip Hopercize, Awesome Ab’s• Instructional Fitness – Spinning, Callanetics, Yoga, and Pilates

Our Campus Athletics team continues to be creative, enthusiastic, and energetic about fitness and fun on campus and the members of our campus community are responding!

on The Move!

In order to maintain its incredibly high participation levels, our Campus Athletics leadership team recognized the importance of visibility, awareness, and branding. In 2009-2010, a new logo was developed to create the identity that Campus Athletics was seeking. This logo (seen above) has been displayed on 700 club sport uniforms, 650 intramural t-shirts, 200 volunteer and student worker t-shirts, and in various venues across campus. Our Campus Athletics leadership team also filled the highly visible Taylor Gym hallway, which provides access to the Welch Fitness Center, with a 16-foot glass trophy case and a “Wall of Achievement”. The trophy case contains a plethora of club sport team and individual awards and the “Wall of Achievement” recognizes 56 years of intramural champions and club sport leadership. Campus Athletics is clearly “On the Move” and is energizing the campus toward fitness education, fun competition and the lifelong value of recreational sports.

The Athletics Partnership office has been busy launching and supporting sport-specific partnerships (alumni communities) for each of our varsity sports. We are grateful for the passion and leadership that our former student-athletes are demonstrating as they engage with our programs and with one another. Together, we have accomplished a great deal over the past two years, and yet, there is still much to do. Below, you can see where we stand relative to our objective of having a “partnership” for each of our varsity sports.

Lehigh has continued to partner with Service Electric Cable TV, the area’s largest cable provider to televise all home football games, plus select basketball games, wrestling matches and several other contests. Regionally, Lehigh partnered with WFMZ-TV in Allentown to produce and televise three football games and one wrestling match plus 13 episodes of the Lehigh Sports Magazine. Nationally, Lehigh events were televised on CBS, CBS College Sports, ESPN2, Fox Sports Net and Fox College Sports.

All Lehigh women’s basketball games can be heard live on WLVR-FM, Lehigh University’s radio station. Select wrestling matches, baseball and softball games will air on WLVR as well.
