Ask the Board A couple of long-time residents pointed out an error after the February newsletter, which stated that before 2007, there had been no dues increase since 1996. Actually, there was an increase in 2006 as well. Mary Mendoza apologizes for the error, and adds that 1996 dues ($27.50), adjusted for inflation would roughly equal our current dues of $36.60. According to the inflation calculator on money.cnn.com, $27.50 in 1996 would equal $36.33 in 2007, adjusted for inflation. On to this month’s “Ask The Board” question, submitted by Barry: “Does anyone from HOA management ever drive through the neighborhood looking for obvious deed restriction violations?” The answer, according to new Association Manager Chuck Vaughan, is yes. The inspectors from RealManage drive the neighborhoods approximately twice per month, and the Association Manager drives through another two times per month. Typically, when deed restriction violations are found, unless it’s an egregious issue, a courtesy notice is sent. If the issue is not resolved, 3 more communications are sent, approximately 10-14 days apart. If the issue is still not brought into compliance, the resident will be prosecuted in accordance with the By-Laws of the Association.

Sounds scary, doesn’t it? It’s scary how much electricity they waste! This term has been coined to describe the fact that most electrical appliances suck electricity even when they’re off. “Off doesn’t mean off anymore, but standby,” says Mark Pierce, a Cornell Cooperative Extension associate in the Department of Design and Environmental Analysis (DEA) in Cornell’s College of Human Ecology. “As a result, we’re using the equivalent of seven electrical generating plants just to supply the amount of electricity needed to support the standby power of our vampire appliances when they’re off.” What can you do about it? Unfortunately, many of our modern conveniences like DVRs and TiVo’s have to be on “standby” in order to record our favorite shows. But there are some things you can do. For those appliances that can really be “off” when you shut them off, like TVs, DVD players, stereos, toaster ovens, etc, you can pull the plug or use a power strip. For example, many kitchens have a clock on the wall, on the microwave, the stove, and the toaster oven. It’s probably difficult to unplug the stove and the microwave, but it might be easier to unplug the toaster oven when you’re not using it. Also, you could put other appliances on a surge-protected power strip, someplace that is easily accessible, and simply flip off the strip when you’re not using the devices. Another option is to plug the DVR or TiVo into the wall, but put the TV, DVD player, and stereo in another power strip, and flip that off

Green Tip of the Month – Vampire Electronics! when you’re not using them also. Same for the computer – maybe the router has to be plugged into the wall but you could put the processor, monitor, external hard drive, phone charger, USB hub, printer, etc. on a power strip. Experts estimate that an average of 7% of our electric bill is caused by vampire electronics, but the range can be anywhere from 5-25%! Consider using power strips and if you are shopping for new appliances, you can find a list of products that have standby losses of 1 watt or less at http://standby.lbl.gov/data/1wproducts.html.

Neighborhood Block Party & Benefit!By Liz Hennig

Sunday, February 17th, we hosted a wonderful block party. Our original idea of just having a block party grew into a benefit upon finding out that our neighbor, Michael Forby, had passed. Our hearts went out to his family and fiancée. Michael had just moved in a few months ago and was recovering from a car accident that had caused him to suffer from seizures. Unfortunately, we had not gotten the chance to know him very well. He had, however, done something wonderful for our daughter last fall. She had knocked on his door for her school’s fundraiser and he did indeed make a purchase of a necklace. The lovely part was that upon delivery, Michael told her he had bought the necklace for her! She was surprised and delighted by the gift! We then realized the day he passed that Michael had placed the thank you note she had written him on his refrigerator. While spending some time with the family, we realized the financial challenges they were unexpectedly facing. Our block party expanded into a benefit immediately. The party itself was a ball! We got so much help from so many neighbors (most of whom we had never met prior). One man swore there were at least one hundred kiddos running around, and even more adults around than children. We had neighbors from all over Legend Oaks II come over. We had lots of food, and live music performed by my husband, some of his musician friends, and many neighbors, too! There were tons of smiles and laughter. We even had a visit from the police for having the road blocked. But they were wonderful - once we explained what we were doing, they gave us permission to keep the street blocked until the end of our party to keep the children safe. When it was all said and done, I believe all of us made many new friends and we were able to give Michael’s family $1574.00, which we found awe-inspiring! If you would like to learn more about Michael, or express condolences to his family, you can visit www.mem.com and search ‘Michael Forby.’ Both his mother and his fiancée wanted all of you to know how much it meant to them to see such a crowd, how grateful they were for our gift, and how much they knew Michael would have loved the party. The week between Michael’s passing and the block party, we spent a lot of time planning and meeting new neighbors. The enthusiasm we were met with was better than we ever could have imagined. I recall saying to Michael’s family and fiancée that Michael was leaving quite a legacy upon our neighborhood. And, now that a couple of weeks have gone by, we are still seeing more people outside and talking, more kids playing together, and it even seems like there are more dogs out walking! We would like to send a special thanks out to Jeanine, Lesley, Chris, Gene, Alfredo, Alfredo Jr, Jessica, Scott, Michael, Mark, Joey, Brian, Sylvia, Rudy, Alexis, Jordan, Ethan, and ? (I’m probably forgetting at least a few people) who helped pull it all together, especially on party day. A special thanks goes to Austin Ghost Tours and Manuel’s Restaurant for their raffle donations, HEB for the balloons, and Al, who ran the silent auction. And another thank you to all of our neighbors and new friends for their generous donations, and just for coming out to play. We can hardly wait to do it again! Scott & Liz HennigPS We would really like to do this again. If you are interested, or have any suggestions, etc, please email us at [email protected]
