Over 200 people attended to enjoy visits with Santa and the ever- popular carriage rides. This year, we had a special treat - caroling from the Austin Girls Choir. The Holiday Party has been a much-anticipated event each year in the neighborhood. This year, however, was especially challenging because only two people stepped forward to volunteer to serve on a committee to put on the party. The efforts of those volunteers were appreciated. But to continue what has become a great tradition, the HOA needs more of our neighbors to volunteer. Because the party is a “tradition,” much of the normal difficulty in planning the event has been eliminated; we have our normal vendors, we know what we need in terms of refreshments. The job, while manageable by a small group of volunteers, is not manageable when essentially one or two people have to do all the work. As we start a new year, we are hoping to see some revitalized interest in volunteering for neighborhood activities. These include our Easter Egg Hunt, Pool Committee, and the Holiday Party. If you have any interest in volunteering, please email Mary Mendoza at [email protected]. Please Help! The Board is actively seeking volunteers for the pool committee this summer. Responsibilities include recommending hours, repairs, etc., and planning summer events at the pool. Whetherit’s“goinggreen,”improvedproductivity,orincorporatinganewinitiative,likevolunteering,intoyourlife,ifyouconsiderthefollowingthreesteps,youcandothese,ormostanythingelse,mucheasier. Everyoneknowsit’sreallyhardtochangeourbehaviors.It’swhymostNewYear’sResolutionsdon’tlastbeyondJanuary.Whyit’ssohardtodothethingsweknowweshould,likeexercisingmoreorquittingabadhabit.Buttherearethreecomponentstochangingbehaviors,andconsideringthesemightmakeitmucheasierforyoutoincorporatethosenewthingsintoyourlife. The first component is awareness. Most of our habits are so ingrained inour lives andbehavior thatwedon’t even recognizethemanymore.Becomingawareofthebehaviorsthataren’tservingyou is the first step in changing them. For example, if you want to incorporatemoreenvironmentallyfriendlyhabitsintoyourlifestyle,it’simportanttounderstandwhatyou’redoingthatdoesn’tservethatdesire.Doyouleavethewaterrunningwhenyoubrushyourteeth?Doyouparticipateinyourcity’srecyclingprogram?Doyoubuyrecycledproducts?Trytothinkaboutareaswhereyoucouldimprove,perhapsevenmakealist.Thenthenexttimeanopportunitypresentsitself,you’llbemorelikelytorememberthatyouwanttochangethebehaviorinsteadofjustbeingon“autopilot”asyoumovethroughyourday.

Find a book, or an article, or a blog, or an entire website, about someonewhohaslearnedhowtosuccessfullystayontopofemail,whilecontinuingtogetthingsdoneandbeproductive.Maybeyouneedmorehelpthanjustreading,butthoseresourcesareavailableto choose and learn from as well. So first know WHAT you want to do, then find out HOW to do it.
