Weallhavedaysthatseeminglyflybyandattheend,weknowthatwewerebusy,butwecan’treallyarticulateexactlywhatwegotaccomplished.I’vecometorecognizethatas“stageone”productivity.Forsomeofus,manydaysgobylikethat.Andforstillothers,it’sawayoflife.Whenyou’reatstageoneproductivity,youarealmostexclusivelyinreactivemode.Andbeingreactivedoesn’tnecessarilymeanthatyouaren’tbeingproductive,becauseitmeansthatyouaredealingwiththeotherpeopleinyourworld,andweallhavetodothatsometimes:goingtomeetings,answeringemails,returningphonecalls,puttingoutfires,etc.Infact,maybeyouaresomeonewhosejobitistobereactive.Forexample,ifyouareamanager,andyoudon’thaveanyotherresponsibilitiesexcepttobethereforyouremployees,helpkeepthemontrack,makesuretheyaremeetingdeadlines,dealingwithinterpersonalissues,etc.,thenIwouldsaythatmeansyourjobistobereactive.However,ifyouhaveevenoneresponsibilitythatisn’tdependentonyourstaff,atleastonethingforwhichyoualoneareresponsible,andtherearepartsofitthatotherpeoplecan’tdoforyou,thenyoumustfindsometimetobeproactive,inordertogetthatthingdone. You are knocking thingsoff your to-do list, and youfinish eachworkdayfeelingsomesenseofaccomplishment…somesensethatyouactuallygotsomestuffdonethatday.Thisisagreatplacetobe.Ifyoufindyourselfhavingahardtimegettingtostagetwo,mysuggestiontoyouistobreakyourhabit,whichI’dbetmoneythatyouhave,ofcheckingyouremailfirstthinginthemorning.Ifthefirstthingyoudowhenyoustartyourworkdayeverymorningistocheckyouremail,thatsetsthetoneofthedayforbeingreactive.Itsendsyoudownthatrabbittrailofansweringemails,respondingtopeople…beforeyouknowityou’rereadingblogs,checkingyourTwitterstream,yourFaceBooknotifications…thennextthingyouknowyou’reofftoameeting,thentolunch,andwhenyoucomeback,it’sbackonemail,andthecyclestartsalloveragain.Breakthatcyclebygoingtoyourto-dolistfirstthinginthemorning,insteadofcheckingyouremail.Workforanhourorninetyminutescheckingitemsoffyourto-dolist,andthencheckyouremail.Theresultwillbeasenseofaccomplishmentattheendoftheday,eveniftherestofthetimewasspentbeingreactive.You’llbeabletopointtosomeconcretethingsthatyoucompletedthatday. Butformanypeople,thereareprobablythingsonyourto-dolistthatneedtobedone,andmayevenbeimportant,butcompletingthemmaynothaveasignificantimpactonyourworkoryourlife.Manyof themmaynotbringyoucloser to thebigpicturegoalsyou are trying to achieve. So this brings me to the third stageofproductivity: notonlymarkingthingsoffyourto-dolist,butcompletingthingsthatbringyouclosertoyourgoals.Somepeoplecall them “big rocks.” If you are unfamiliar with the metaphorofthebigrocks,youcanprobablyfindavideoofStephenCoveyillustratingitonline.Hewasnotthefirstonetocomeupwithit,butheiswell-knownfordiscussingit. Youareworkingatstagethreeofproductivitywhenyouaccomplishoneormoregoal-dependentthings inyourday. Thingsthatarestepstowardachievingyourmajorgoalsorinitiatives.It’ssimilartotheconceptBrianTracycalls,“eatthatfrog,”(whichyoucanseeatwww.eatthatfrogmovie.com). My suggestion to reaching stagethreeproductivityistomakesurethatyouhaveyour“bigpicture”objectivesalwaysvisible toyou. Idothis throughmy“projects”list.Ineedtoalwaysbeabletoliftmyheadoutofthe“forest”andseethe“trees.”Keepingalistcalled“projects”helpsmeaccomplishthis.However,everyprojectmusthaveonethingthatyoucandonext,tokeepitmovingforward. It’shelpfultorememberthatit’ssometimesimportanttobeinstageoneandstagetwoproductivity,butyou’rereallyempoweredandshapingyourlifewithintentionwhenyouarespendingtimeinstagethreeproductivity.
