Leeds County Award of Merit presented to Tony Gunnewiek, Gunnebrooke Farms
After graduating from Rideau District High School, Tony left the home farm to work in Foremost, Alberta and then on a dairy farm in the Co-drington/Warkwarth area where he became involved in Junior Farm-ers and eventually became a director. In 1983 he returned to the family farm to work with his father Tony Sr., and brother, John. He joined Leeds County Junior Farmers and met Leslie. They married in 1987 and Tony is the proud father of Claire, Amanda and Alex and loving grandfather of Allan, Nina and Vera. In 1988, John, Joyce Tony and Leslie formed a partnership and bought Gunnebrooke Farms. They incorporated in 1995.

By Eleanor Renaud, Provincial Director As spring gets closer I know we all hope for a better cropping season than 2019. As we get our equipment ready for planting season please keep safety top of mind. Remember stress is also something you need to be mindful of, so take a moment to enjoy family and the beauty around you. OSCIA is working on the final plans for the new E newsletter. It’s called “The Innovator,” News from the Grassroots. If you haven’t already done so please be sure the OSCIA has your email address. This will ensure you keep up on all that is happening across the province, as well as right here at home. It also allows us to share the great things happening here. With these change to how we do the newsletter it will give the region more money for doing projects and knowledge transfer. Renfrew Soil & Crop held a Workplace Safety workshop some-thing every county should run as safety should be top of mind for all of us. Hasting Soil and Crop held a workshop on “How Ruminants Fit in the Ecosystem.” This sounded interesting, is this something that could be done in Our Region? There are so many ideas out there that we could duplicate and our members learn from. I would like to see the counties in the region work more together collaborating on research projects workshops or courses that ben-efit our members.

Leeds County Award of Merit presented to Tony Gunnewiek (continued from front page) Gunnebrooke Farms is mainly in Bastard ward but with some acreage in South Crosby ward of Rideau Lakes Township. The farm includes about 920 acres owned and 140 acres rented. About 500 acres are cropped. Crops include hay, silage, grain corn, soybeans, winter wheat, barley and maple syrup. This year there will be about 3500 maple taps. The have about 120 Holsteins, milking 65 cows twice daily. Tony also enjoys managing the woodlot to heat 3 far-mouses with wood and sell surplus firewood and logs. Tony has enjoyed being a long term member of the Leeds County Soil and Crop organization. He has held many positions over the years but recently he has been most interested in getting your farmers involved at all levels and keeping this a vibrant group of involved farmers. Over the years, Gunnebrooke Farms has entered their crops in many competitions including local fairs (Delta, Lombardy, Perth) and maple syrup competitions in Vermont and the Toyal Winter Fair. Tony and John have won the Leeds County DHIA Herd Management Award 19 of the past 25 years. In 2003, Gunnebrooke Farms won the Allan Kilborne Memorial Stewardshiip of the Land Award. In 2008, Gunnebrooke Farms was inducted into the Purina Leader’s Council. Tony was the Ontario Forage Mater’s County winter in 1993 and again in 2013. As a young farmer, Tony was also a motorcycle enthusiast and pilot. Now his interests include reading, local history, geography, geology, weather, road trips, and of course, soil sampling. Because of Tony’s interest and research Gunnebrooke Farms was an early adopter of no-till and soybeans in Leeds County. Tony and Leslie are now transitioning their share of Gunnebrooke Farms to their nephew Ste-ven, and his wife, Emma Lee. They will be the third generation of Gunnewieks on this farm. Thanks to Alex Oosterof for this information!

Communcations Update During discussions at our local AGM’s several areas of concern were identified: 1. Lack of consultation with Regional Communication Coordinators and membership. 2. What will be the purpose of the regions? 3. Changes to how we currently do business at the local and regional level. Our main mar-
keting tool for soliciting sponsorship and new members will no longer exist, as we know it now.
4. No job description or budget for RCC’s after March edition of Newsletter. 5. Less local content in a provincially produced newsletter. 6. Who will decide what local content will be included in each newsletter. At the RCC training session held in conjunction with the provincial AGM we were provided an-swers to many of these questions. 1. I had the opportunity to speak at length with the Chair of the sub-committee, Phil Oege-
ma. During our conversation it became quite clear just how much the information gained from increased consultation with the RCCs would have been a benefit to the committee during their discussions. However, I hope our discussion helped with decisions made since the AGM will reflect a stronger understanding of how we do our job at the regional level.
2. The ‘purpose of the regions’ is being considered, the discussions are ongoing at the pro-vincial level.
3. Regarding changes to how we currently do business at the local level: the sponsors we are able to solicit will be listed in the ‘regional’ portion of the e-newsletter. This will cre-ate a provincial exposure, provided members from other parts of the province access our regional link.
4. During our training we were presented the proposed budget for each region, which will provide excellent opportunities for RCCs and their region. Along with the budget we re-ceived draft job descriptions: the first outlined duties related to the provincial portion of the newsletter and responsibilities; the second outlined a proposed list of duties and re-sponsibilities to the region.
5. The amount of local/regional content provided will be determined by the regional board and communication coordinator. In our region the board is planning to meet after further training for the RCCs, Regional Presidents and the Provincial Director.
6. Local/regional content will be accessible via links in the e-newsletter and will be created by the Regional Communication Coordinator.
I am optimistic and looking forward to future training and information sessions.

Congratulation goes to Bruce Hudson for winning first prize for his delicious Cheesecake! To quote Bruce: “They really weren’t very hard to make...lol!” To qualify the cheesecakes had to be made from Canadian dairy products. Making presentation is Victoria Eastman.
