CREDITS

YDL seminar is a 2 credit course.

PURPOSE AND LEARNING OBJECTIVES The purpose of this seminar is to identify and apply leadership models to the core concepts of the Youth Development Leadership program at the University of Minnesota. Learning Objectives

• Investigate leadership theories • Summarize / synthesize leadership models • Apply leadership theories to youth development • Integrate leadership theories with the YDL core concepts • Identify 3 to 4 models of leadership that may apply to each core concept • Critique models of leadership theory with a youth development lens

ASSIGNMENTS

• Create chart to show what concepts of leadership might match well with core concepts of the YDL program

• Develop a leadership philosophy statement. • Create a seminar plan that can be used by YDL students interested in exploring leadership.

• Share information learned with instructors of YDL core courses and be available to share

information with other YDL students in core courses

Seminar Schedule July 1, 2008

Introduction and Seminar Planning Determine seminar purpose, scope, and objectives. Begin literature review. Create seminar website to document the work in this seminar. July 16, 2008

Build the Research Base Review scholarly materials needed for the seminar (e.g., articles, books, literature reviews, resource people). July 30, 2008

Build the Framework and Research Base

Develop spreadsheet for tracking YDL core concepts and leadership theories. Draft and group edit seminar proposals. Investigate and recommend resources. Distribute and review handouts on leadership models and theories.

August 15, 2008

Meeting with Mai Moua

Discuss leadership models and theories. August 25, 2008

Sharpen and Narrow the Seminar Scope Debrief feedback from Mai Moua. Discuss our stance on leadership (definition, mission). Narrow the scope of the seminar deliverables. Edit the seminar proposals. Start reading Northhouse text on Leadership: Theory and Practice. September 24, 2008
