    BOARD OF EDUCATION

    Las Cruces Public Schools - Las Cruces, New Mexico

    “Creation of Las Cruces Public Schools Safe Zones Program” 

    WHEREAS, the Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education values every student’s identity and is

    committed to ensuring that all students feel welcomed, included and supported;

    WHEREAS, marginalized student populations are targeted and bullied, harassed and discriminated against

     because of their sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, race, ethnicity, immigration status,

    learning/mental/physical disability, religion, class, body type, etc.

    WHEREAS, adults in the schools who are identified as culturally competent, safe and supportive, are trained as

     part of a formalized Safe Zones program, helps students feel safer at school, improves attendance, and increasesgrade point averages; and

    WHEREAS, Safe Zones programs across the nation have demonstrated positive effects in promoting a culture

    of diversity and inclusion, sending a message to students that their identity is seen and valued, providing extratraining and support to self-identified school staff, and dovetailing with other bullying prevention efforts.

    NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Las Cruces Public Schools District is establishing the Safe

    Zones program for all schools under its jurisdiction in order to provide safe spaces and identify safe adultschool staff where students can seek support and resources;

    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Safe Zones program will be overseen by a Las Cruces Public SchoolDistrict staff member and guided by a planning team comprised of community agencies with expertise on a

    variety of issues;

    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that each school will identify at least two volunteer staff to be the identified

    as Safe Zones representatives for their school who will participate in Safe Zones meetings and trainings, and

    will identify their space with a Las Cruces Public Schools Safe Zones sign;

    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Las Cruces School District will publicize the creation of the Safe

    Zones program so that all students, parents, and concerned community members are aware of this program; and

    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Las Cruces Public Schools Safe Zones program will officially launchin August of 2016.
