The capital delivery process is complex and one that cannot be left to chance. Prior to launching a major facility project, healthcare executives must ask themselves, “Are we ready?” Poor alignment of expectations and goals at the outset can get a project off on the wrong foot, which can cause delays and cost money down the road – possibly even jeopardize the project. In today’s environment, projects must be prioritized. Capitalshould be invested when the project furthers the strategic goals of the organization, generates a positive returnon investment, or involves critical infrastructure upgrades.

In order to ensure a successful capital facility project, the first step is to assess priorities and evaluate the true readinessto launch. KLMK Group will conduct a thorough data and information analysis and meet with hospital leadership to determine what is known, what is unknown, what has been completed and what remains to be done. This is followed by a series of half-day sessions aimed at identifying gaps in expectations versus realities. The outcome of this process is an implementation plan, or road map, for bridging the gaps.

Key areas explored during the assessment include: • Strategy – What’s the reason for the project? What are the priorities?• Scope – What’s the project scope and how was it defined? • Process – Is there a plan for implementation?• Funding – Where’s the money coming from? Is it enough? • Approach – What’s the best approach to minimize risk and maximize value? • Team – What players (internally and externally) need to be in place? • Schedule – How long will it take? What’s realistic?

As a healthcare executive, you must know the answers to these questions. Dedicating time to conduct a LaunchGap Analysis (LGA) prior to the launch of your project will save months of rework and change orders, millions ofdollars and a lifetime of frustration.

The major phases of KLMK’s Launch Gap Analysis (LGA) are

similar to those of a physician treating a patient. They are:

• Discovery (History and Physical)

What information is currently available relative to the

proposed project? This involves initial data gathering

and pre-session interviews.

• Gap Analysis (Diagnosis)

Where are the gaps in what is known and unknown?

What is already done? What still needs to be completed?

• Implementation Plan (Treatment Plan)

What is the plan to ensure that expectations are aligned

and that everyone is headed in the same direction?
