Enrollment: 42

Course Description: This course examines ethical, legal, and social issues that arise in modern health care and health sciences contexts. The purpose of this course is to provide you with an ethical framework through which to analyze not only current but also future, yet-unknown ethical issues that affect the provision of health care on a daily basis. Areas of study will include: the treatment relationship; health care access; diversity issues; the allocation of health care resources; historical and contemporary efforts to reform the health care system; informed consent; human subjects research; stem cell research; animal research; body ownership as a legal and ethical concept; organ and tissue donation, procurement, and transplantation; confidentiality and privacy; genetics and genetic testing; end of life care and decision making, including advanced directive and withholding/withdrawing life-sustaining treatment; reproduction, including abortion and assisted reproductive technologies; pharmacy, drug, and device issues; psychiatry and neuroscience; and issues of bioethics in society, in particular bioethics and culture/religion.

HSCI 164 – Topics in Health Sciences, Independent Study (UG, Spring, 2 cr) Role: Research Mentor

Course and Role Description: This course, the first of a two-term experiential sequence, is a component of the required Health Sciences Senior Capstone Experience. The purpose of this course is to provide students experiential opportunities related to health sciences issues and careers in their chosen pathway. Students will

complete focused learning opportunities with preceptors on projects related to healthcare or other health sciences fields. Learning components include active learning site time, reflective communication, assessments, and documentation consistent with an experiential course. As a preceptor, I have contributed to the delivery of the course and facilitated learning outcomes for the students listed below.

Teaching Experience as Master’s Level Lecturer at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (2013 to 2017) KIN 550 – Psychological Aspects of Human Movement (UG/G, 3 cr.) *DPT Program Required Course Role: Co-Instructor

Enrollment: Fall 2014 = 14; Fall 2016 = 35

Course Description: Course Description: This course is an advanced study of psychosocial theories that inform the practice of integrated health care and integrated performance enhancement. Applications to both prevention and rehabilitation will be considered, with an overall focus on optimizing participation. Both practitioner and client / patient viewpoints will be considered throughout the course. The course will primarily address psychological and sociocultural aspects of health-, performance-, and participation-related behavior, as well as theoretical approaches for the promotion and support of health- and performance-related behavior change among patients or clients.

KIN 709 – Research Practicum (G, 3 cr.) *DPT Program Required Course Role: Reader/Grader Enrollment: Fall 2016 = 24

Course Description: The purpose of this course is to provide students instruction in the types of research expected of a practicing physical therapist with a focus on developing skills in survey based research and disciplined inquiry practices. The course is sequenced as a 2-semester course.

KIN 270 – Statistics in the Health Professions: Theory & Practice (UG, 3 cr.) Role: Lead Instructor Enrollment: Spring 2014 = 210; Spring 2015 = 214; Fall 2016 = 79; Spring 2016 = 58 *Department transitioned from one to two offerings per semester in 2016.

Course Description: This course is premised on the fundamental belief that the professional delivery of health and health-related human services should be informed by knowledge generated from scholarly inquiry and scientific research. A substantial amount of the published scientific research informing the health and health-related professions is quantitative. As such, study findings and conclusions are most often based on statistical analyses. This course is designed to enable undergraduate students in the health and health-related professions to understand fundamental descriptive and inferential statistics reported in such published studies.

KIN 400 – Ethics and Values in the Health and Fitness Professions (UG, Fall/Summer/Spring, 3cr.) Role: Lead Instructor (Online) Enrollment: Fall 2015 = 51; Spring 2016 = 65; Summer 2016 = 28

Course Description: This course is designed as an introduction to the role of ethics and values in the health and fitness professions. In light of the ethical dilemmas which inevitably arise in healthcare environments, this course will expose students to evidence-based strategies and practices for managing such ethical situations. In a broad attempt to bridge the gap between basic ethics theories and practical application, students will demonstrate competencies through a series of case scenarios. In addition, students will be better prepared to successfully navigate ethical decision making within clinical applications unique to their own health and fitness careers.

Teaching Experience as Master’s Level Lecturer at Carroll University (2014)
