The Duke of Edinburgh’s AwardBCA is proud to be able to offer students the opportunity to work towards and achieve The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE), the world’s leading youth achievement award.

Many students find achieving a DofE Award life-changing, a fun adventure and major challenge. The award helps students push personal boundaries, gain new skills and enhance their CVs and university applications.

You achieve your Award by completing a personal programme of activities in four sections. The length of time you have to spend on each section depends on the level of programme you’re doing; the sections are:

– Volunteering: helping someone, your community or the environment

– Physical: becoming fitter through sport, dance or fitness activities

– Skills: developing existing talents or trying something new

– Expedition: planning, training for and completing an adventurous journey

For further information on joining the DofE programme please contact Gina Moore on [email protected] or call 01628 824444.

Industry PlacementBCA students are lucky enough to have a dedicated Industry Placement department at the College. As part of your study programme at BCA, all students undertake some form of industry placement. We work with companies across the sectors our courses cover to provide you with outstanding opportunities in industry. Placement enriches students in many ways – it gives you the opportunity to see your industry in action and puts the skills you have learned into practice gaining you valuable working skills and experience.

We have over 1,600 employers in our database and always welcome more. These are employers we trust and have worked with previously, ranging from small scale, local operations to multinational businesses. There is a placement for everyone and we are dedicated to making sure you get the right one for you.

Why is work experience important? – Industry placement introduces you to the world of work – it will give you an idea of the nitty gritty of your industry and the skills that are most valuable within it.

– Building relationships with potential future employers – students often impress their employer so much that their placement can result in a job offer. One in four students found employment as a result of their industry placement in 2018/19.

– Enhancing your CV – students with work experience relating to their studies are always more attractive to future employers.

– An industry placement is a compulsory requirement on your BCA study programme.

– Experiencing different settings – helping you to make meaningful decisions about what sector you intend to specialise in beyond your studies.

All BCA students get the

opportunity to step out of the classroom and into an industry

placement.

Choosing the Right CourseWith such a wide range of different courses to choose from, how can you find out which type of qualification would best suit your interests, career plan and learning style? Take a look at the options below to see which type of qualification would be best for you.

Competition for places on courses is high, so you can’t wait until you get your GCSE results to decide. If you are unsure, you can apply for more than one course. You will then have the opportunity to attend an interview for those chosen areas to help you make a decision. When you come to the College for your interview, we will consider your predicted grades and discuss the qualification and level that would suit you best.

Vocational coursesFor those of you who are interested in a specific field, or have a clear career path in mind, a vocational course will set you in the right direction towards employment or university. These nationally recognised qualifications place more emphasis on practical skills and are assessed through work related assignments and external assessments. You will see various vocational options throughout the ‘courses’ section of this guide, found on pages 24 to 107.

If you are interested in combining study with quality experience in the workplace, an apprenticeship would be the qualification for you. You will have the opportunity to earn a wage while learning relevant skills for your profession. Apprentices either divide their time between the workplace and college or complete 100% of their apprenticeship in the workplace. For more information about our apprenticeships, please turn to page 14 of this prospectus or contact our apprenticeships team on [email protected] or 01628 827438.

Foundation learning programmesYou don’t need any formal qualifications to enter a course at foundation level. If you need some extra support with your studies or work best within a smaller group, our foundation and entry level courses would be suitable for you. You will have the opportunity to develop numeracy, literacy, ICT, social and personal skills, and progress towards higher level qualifications. You can find out more about our Foundation programmes by turning to page 58 of this guide.

www.bca.ac.uk08

Your Study ProgrammeOur study programmes combine your chosen subject with a range of transferable skills to enhance your learning and help you develop. You will be equipped with the skills and knowledge required for progression on to Higher Education, apprenticeships and employment.

English and mathsDevelopment of English and maths skills is essential for successful progression. BCA will support you to ensure you leave us having achieved the best grades you possibly can. You will be timetabled into a class that is at the right level for you, based on your grades and prior experience.

All students will be working towards attaining a grade 4 or above at GCSE.

– Already achieved a grade 4 or above at GCSE? You will not be required to study additional English and maths.

– Achieved grade 3 at GCSE? You will be enrolled on to a GCSE course and will work towards gaining a grade 4 or above.

– Achieved lower than grade 3? You will be enrolled on to a GCSE course or another appropriate English and maths qualification at an appropriate level.

Find out more about numerical GCSE grading on page 113 of this guide.

Practical lessons, lectures and tutorials

This planned activity takes place on our extensive campus and helps you to develop your independent study skills. You will focus on extending your practical skills and knowledge to gain a strong understanding of your chosen subject area.

Enrichment and employability skills

Employer links are important and help you focus on gaining the skills you need for your future career. Your study programme may include visits from industry professionals or trips to business venues and workplaces. College life will help you to develop the skills required to be successful in your chosen career. Good punctuality, attendance and commitment to your study programme is an expectation.

Industry placementDevelop experience and gain extra knowledge of the workplace with a placement in an environment that interests you and suits your skills. Find out more about Industry Placement on page 05 of this prospectus.

VolunteeringInvolve yourself in additional activities that will enrich your development and boost your CV. Higher EducationGoing further with BCA

The thought of ‘escaping’ to university can be extremely exciting but it can also be rather daunting. Choosing the subject area you want to study is only part of it as there is so much more to think about. Course fees, the cost of accommodation, transport and of course, your ultimate career goals, all need to be taken into consideration. Also, moving away from home is not for everyone. If you are reading this prospectus, the chances are that you are fairly local to BCA and a two-year vocational Foundation Degree may be more suitable for your chosen career than a purely academic degree.

The Foundation Degree programmes offered at BCA are all vocationally driven and industry related, giving our students the best possible preparation for employment in their chosen field. Developed in partnership with and validated by either the Royal Agricultural University or Reading University, tuition fees are lower than those charged by most universities, yet you can be sure that all our programmes meet rigorous academic standards. Furthermore, our team of experienced and highly motivational tutors and friendly advisers provide a level of support that simply cannot be delivered by some of the larger institutions.

Vocational, less expensive and friendly doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on the university experience. BCA’s beautiful campus, set in almost 400 acres of Berkshire countryside, is linked to both the Royal Agricultural University and Reading University with their extensive facilities and, of course, all the social attractions of their Students’ Unions and their calendar of events and societies.

Then, after your Foundation Degree, what next? Some take their newly acquired skills and knowledge straight into the workplace, but many go on to traditional universities to top-up to Honours Degrees and beyond. Not only does BCA provide a great education experience, it provides a firm foundation for a great future too.

So, although you may not be ready for Higher Education this year, BCA may be just what you are looking for in the future as we are constantly developing our Higher Education portfolio.

For students who choose to travel from home every day, we run a subsidised transport service covering a wide area. We operate 20 routes in total and over 800 of our students use the service every day. We pick up from 11 mainline railway stations – Amersham, Aylesbury, Bracknell, Camberley, High Wycombe, Hounslow, Maidenhead, Reading, Wokingham, Slough and Uxbridge – with a further 100 stops over the 20 routes. So even if we don’t pick up in your immediate area, you can take advantage of the rail network to connect with our transport facilities.

For those students considering us as an alternative to studying in central London, Maidenhead Station is on the fast route from Paddington. Nearby High Wycombe is on the Marylebone line too, so getting here is a lot easier than you might think.

Our College Discretionary Learner Support Fund is here to help students who need financial assistance with the cost of coming to college. Many students successfully apply to this fund each year to help them get a bus pass. The cost of using the

transport service can be found on the website along with the latest timetable.

For those students who drive, we have extensive free parking onsite. Just register your vehicle with the Transport department during enrolment, or after you pass your driving test. Your vehicle must display an up-to-date parking permit.
