2018 Schedule/Results Cardinals Wrap Up Historic Season In a season that started out with very little being expected of the Lamar University football program, the Cardinals forced everyone to stop and take notice of Beaumont, Texas. After a 1-4 start to the season, even less was expected of the Cardinals in 2018. All of that changed in the final 12 seconds of what appeared to be a heartbreaking loss to eventual SLC co-champion Incarnate Word. UIW lined up for want appeared to be the game-winning field goal only to have the kick blocked and recovered by LU’s Caleb Abrom. The DeSoto, Texas native then sprinted 66-yards untouched into the end zone for a thrilling six-point victory. It would be the first of six consecutive wins as the Car- dinals would rally from last place in the Southland standings into third and a berth in the NCAA FCS Playoffs for the first time in program history. Along the way, LU knocked off three consecutive top 25 teams, including the first-ever win over Central Arkansas. After finishing the regular season with six-straight victories the Cardinals received an at- large bid into the NCAA FCS Playoffs for the first time in program history squaring off against Northern Iowa. The Panthers were making their 20th appearance in the postsea- son. Despite being heavy underdogs, the Cardinals battled UNI down to the wire coming up just short, 16-13, at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls. Big Red ended the season with a 7-5 (.583) overall record and a 6-3 (.667) mark in Southland play. Historic Significance When the Cardinals got the call they qualified for the NCAA FCS Championships, it became a historical marker for the university. The FCS selection show marked the first time in program history that Big Red had qualified for the NCAA FCS (formerly I-AA playoffs) Championships. Home Sweet Home The Cardinals have made Provost Umphrey Stadium a very tough place to play over the course of the past five seasons. LU is 18-17 (.500) at home during that stretch with nine of the 17 setbacks coming against nationally ranked opponents, including one (Coastal Carolina) that was making the transition to the NCAA FBS level. Since the program’s return, Big Red is 28-24 (.538) in front of its home fans. LU in November The month of November has not been kind to the Cardinals historically. The Cardinals are 57-85-1 (.402) all-time in the month dating back to the 1955 season. Big Red was 1-5 (.167) in November over the course of the previous two seasons, but was 3-1 in the month in 2018 (with a perfect 3-0 mark during the regular season). Big Red ended the season with a 7-5 (.583) overall record and a 6-3 (.667) mark in Southland play.

Historic SignificanceWhen the Cardinals got the call they qualified for the NCAA FCS Championships, it became a historical marker for the university. The FCS selection show marked the first time in program history that Big Red had qualified for the NCAA FCS (formerly I-AA playoffs) Championships.

season, and the first time since 1957 that LU has not suffered at least one regular season loss in the months of October and November (Cards had two ties but no losses in 1957).

StreakingPrior to the postseason setback at Northern Iowa, the Cardinals’ closed the regular season with six-straight wins. The win streak was the program’s longest since the 1971 and 72 seasons. That year LU ended the 1971 campaign with four-straight wins and opened the following season with three in a row. It was the lon-gest single-season win streak since the 1967 season (7 straight).

Dare I Say En FuegoThe Cardinals ended the regular season as not only the hottest team in the Southland Conference but one of the hottest in the country. Prior to the FCS playoff game at UNI, Big Red’s six-game streak tied for the fifth longest nationally (North Dakota State - 17, Princeton - 10, Kennesaw State - 10, San Diego - 8, Weber State - 6, Hampton - 6 and Lamar - 6).

Top TurnaroundsAfter posting a 2-9 record and finishing 10th in the Southland a year ago, and starting the 2018 season 1-4, few if any thought the Cardinals could advance to the postseason. Six-straight wins later the Cardinals entered the FCS playoffs with one of the na-tion’s top single-season turnarounds. The Red and White stepped on the field against Northern Iowa with a five-game turnaround from last season which tied for the third-best single-season turnaround in the nation. Big Red officially ends the season with a 4.5 game turnaround from 2017.

Winning SeasonWith LU’s victory at No. 22 McNeese, the Cardinals assured themselves of a winning season. It marks the program’s second winning season since the sport’s return prior to the 2010 cam-paign (8-4 in 2014). It was also just the program’s fifth winning season in the previous 30 years. Consecutive Wins Over the Nationally RankedThe Cardinals’ win at No. 22 McNeese marked the program’s third-straight win over a nationally ranked opponent. It is the first time since the program’s return in 2010 that LU has record-ed wins over three consecutive ranked teams in the same season.

Moving In The Right DirectionThe Cardinals’ victory at McNeese marked its seventh of the season and sixth in South-land Conference play. It’s the team’s most wins since 2014. The Cardinals won more games, and more Southland Conference games, in the final six weeks of the regular sea-son than they had in the previous two years combined. With their victory at McNeese to close out the regular season, the Cardinals won just two fewer league games this season than it had in the previous three years combined.

Immediate ImpactApparently LU head coach Mike Schultz’s definition of “time” differs from the rest of the athletics world. From the moment he arrived Schultz stated that it would take time to turn a program around. Building a program doesn’t happen overnight. Most LU fans ex-pected some “time” to mean more than just two seasons. In just his second season with the Cardinals, Schultz has led the LU to a seven-win campaign. Schultz’s seven wins are the most by any second-year LU head coach, and his nine wins in his first two seasons are second to only Larry Kennan’s 11 in 1963 and 1964.

Saying Good-Bye to the Class of 2018Lamar University’s 2018 senior class gave Cardinals fans a season they won’t soon forget. The members of the senior class include Garrett Bowery, Chaston Brooks, Darrel Colbert, Jr., Brandon Dabney, Dedrick Garner, Dorian Gaston, Taylor Givens, Joe Gonzales, Martell Hawthorne, Milton Holmes, Isaiah Howard, Davon Jernigan, Reg-gie Long, Duncan McVey, Garrison Mitchell, Rodney Randle, Jr., Tyler Rios, Dewan Thompson, Jr., and Jarod Wood.

All-Southland ConferenceSeveral members of the Cardinals football team were recognized by the league follow-ing the season. Eleven members of the team were recognized on the SLC’s postseason squad including two superlative honors and two first-team selections. Senior Garrett Bowery was named offensive linemen of the year, while junior quarterback Jordan Hoy was named newcomer of the year. Joining Bowery on the first team was defensive back Davon Jernigan, while junior Daniel Crosley garnered second-team recognition. The players named to the honorable mention list included Darrel Colbert, Jr., Myles Wanza, Case Robinson, Dedrick Garner, Chaston Brooks and Rodney Randle, Jr.

Players of the WeekThrough the first four games of the Cardinals win streak, players were being recognized by the league as Southland Conference Players of the Week. Juniors Caleb Abrom and Tyler Slaydon were named SLC Special Teams Players of the Week after the first two wins, while junior quarterback Jordan Hoy garnered offensive player of the week honors the follwoing two weeks. Senior quarterback Darrel Colbert, Jr. added his name to that list as the league’s offensive player of the week following the final game of the regular season.

Among the Nation’s EliteThe Cardinals enter the postseason nationally ranked in several statistical categories. The Red and White currently rank nationally in fumbles recovered (T26th - 10), defensive touchdowns (T15th - 3), rush offense (13th - 241.8), pass yards per completion (12th - 15.37), passes intercepted (T6th - 17) and turnovers gained (6th - 27).

Mike SchultzHead Coach9-14/Second Season

After succeeding as the offensive coordina-tor of efficient, high-octane offenses for the better part of 16 years – 14 of those in the state of Texas – Mike Schultz enters his second season as head coach of the Lamar University football program. He was hired as the second head coach since the

program’s rebirth in 2010 on December 21, 2016. Schultz was in the unenviable task of trying to guide one of the nation’s youngest teams through the rigors of a Division I schedule. The Cardinals opened camp with 57 new players (signees, walk-ons and transfers) and Schultz began the task of molding his young squad into a cohesive unit. Despite the team’s overall youth, the Cardinals still placed four athletes on the postseason All-Southland team. Among the Cards’ all-conference selections was junior Nate Jones who ended his first season in Beaumont by leading the Southland and finishing fifth in the nation in interceptions. He also finished tied for first nationally in interceptions per game. In addition to the standouts on the field, Schultz also produced two academic standouts. Sophomore Shyler Staton and former Cardinal Manasseh Miles garnered Academic All-Southland recognition in 2017. The Houston native, who most recently spent five seasons under Dennis Franchione at Texas State, helped jump start a Texas Chris-tian program that began in the Western Athletic Conference when they arrived and became a national power in the Big 12. Prior to their arrival, the Horned Frogs suffered a 1-11 mark in 1997 that turned into a 7-5 record and berth into the Sun Bowl in 1998. He and the Frogs would go on to play in nine more bowl games in the final 10 seasons he was there. When Gary Patterson took over the program, Schultz stayed on staff as offensive coordinator and the two built a program that was ranked in the AP and Coaches Top 25 polls in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2008 by year’s end. In 2005 the Frogs were ranked ninth in the country as the Mountain West and Houston Bowl Champions. He was the mastermind that built the foundation for a dominant offense that lasted for more than a decade. Schultz and the Frogs ranked among the nation’s best in scor-ing six times in his 11 seasons, and five times each in total and rushing offense. TCU’s running attack ranked ninth nationally in 2006 with 194.6 yards per game and 17th in total offense (408.5 ypg). In 2004, the 362 points scored tied for second in school history, while the 48 touchdowns were one shy of the school mark in 2005. TCU ranked fourth nationally in rushing offense with 275.6 yards per game at the turn of the millen-nium, and was one of just six schools to average over 200 yards rushing and 200 yards passing in 2003. He was key in the maturation of TCU’s all-time leading rusher LaDainian Tomlinson, who racked up 5,263 rushing yards in his career, but it was when Schultz showed up that he excelled. In 1999, Tomlinson ran for 1,850 yards and topped that his senior season on 2,158 – each led the NCAA. Including Tomlinson’s two seasons with more than 1,000 yards, Schultz tutored five 1,000-yard rushers with the Frogs, who only had four in the 100-year history of the program beforehand. Tomlinson was a Heisman Trophy finalist and the Doak Walk-er Award winner before being picked fifth overall in the 2001 National Football League draft. He would go on to garner NFL Most Valuable Player honors following the 2006 season with 1,815 rushing yards and an NFL record 28 touchdowns. As offensive coordinator, he helped groom Andy Dalton into

an NFL quarterback. In 2007, Dalton was listed as a freshman All-Amer-ican after he set the then single-season school records for pass comple-tions (222) and attempts (371) all while notching second in yards (2,459) and fourth in completion percentage (59.8) Schultz showed the ability to develop young talent throughout his career. Aaron Brown was tabbed as the MWC’s Freshman of the Year, and Lonta Hobbs and Robert Merrill became the first two freshman in TCU history to rush for 1,000 yards. Hobbs did it in 2002 and Merrill in 2003. Basil Mitchell was the fifth 1,000 runner under his tutelage. While at Texas State, Schultz was known for developing a fast, up-tempo spread attack that was highly efficient. The 2014 season was his best, with his quarterbacks ranking 10th in the country in completion percentage (65.4) all while his running backs ranked 18th in rushing offense (238.5). The team was 24th in the nation in total offense (464.4) and 25th in turnover margin (0.58). His offense ranked 111th the season before. He was an instrumental member of a staff that helped the Bob-cats make the transition from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) to the Bowl Subdivision (FBS). By their fourth season, the Cats would have been eligible for a bowl twice, but were still in the transition period. Schultz had two starting quarterbacks during his five seasons at Texas State, and both put up impressive statistics. His first quarterback, Shaun Rutherford, holds the Bobcat career record for pass completion percentage (62.4), while Tyler Jones owns the single-season mark of 65.4 from 2014. Running back Robert Lowe turned in the fourth most rush-ing yards in school history (3,027) and rushing touchdowns (29) under Schultz’s guidance. Between Jones, Rutherford and Lowe, they hold spots on Tex-as State’s career record books for offensive yards, touchdowns responsi-ble for, touchdowns scored and points scored career lists. Under Schultz, the Cats recorded 20 spots in the season record lists. While the offensive coordinator at Texas State, he worked with D.J. Hall, a two-time All-American at offensive line. He notched 31 all-conference performers that spans two conferences and an indepen-dent status, and at TCU he worked with 44 all-conference selections, also spanning three leagues. In all, he’s been a key to 80 all-conference athletes during his 18 years as a coordinator. Schultz, who has coached both on the offensive and defen-sive sides of the ball, started his coaching career at his alma mater and Southland Conference rival Sam Houston State in 1979. He served as recruiting coordinator and coached linebackers in one season and flipped to quarterbacks and receivers in the next year. He also was a recruiting coordinator and coached receivers and tight ends at UTEP and Kansas State before joining Fred Akers’ staff at Texas in 1985. Following that year, Schultz was an assistant and defensive coordinator at Westwood High School in Round Rock for four years before joining Franchione’s staff at Texas State in 1990 – his first stint at TSU. At UNM, he helped the Lobos to a WAC Mountain Division Championship and invitation to the Insight.com Bowl, the program’s first bowl berth since 1961. He’s been a part of 11 bowl appearances. After his time with the Horned Frogs, he spent time as the of-fensive coordinator at both Big 10 program Illinois and Middle Tennes-see State. At Illinois, he coached a rushing attack that again ranked at the top of the nation’s leaderboards (18th) and at MTSU he was invited to play in the GoDaddy.com bowl, only the school’s fifth bowl appearance at the time. Throughout his career, Schultz has worked with quarterbacks, running backs, receivers, tight ends, secondary and linebackers. He and his wife, Cindy have three daughters, Taylor, Kendall and Jordan, and he is a 1979 graduate of Sam Houston.

BEAUMONT, Texas – Eight different players scored a touchdown as Lamar University overwhelmed Kentucky Christian, 70-7, in the 2018 season opener at Provost Umphrey Stadium. The 70-point outburst was the fourth-best point total in school history, and ties for the third-largest margin of victory. Big Red ended the night with 602 yards of total offense, including 409 on the ground, while KCU could only muster 211 yards of offense and just 52 rushing. The LU signal callers finished the game completing 14-of-17 passes (.824) passes for 193 yards and three touchdowns. They also rushed for 246 yards and four scores. Senior Darrel Colbert, Jr. was 12-of-15 (.800) for 179 yards and three TDs, while carrying the ball seven times for 61 yards and a score. Transfer Jordan Hoy – one of four quarterbacks to play – completed his only pass attempt but carried the ball five times for 101 yards and two touchdowns. The defense was able to spread the wealth as juniors Darien Wilson and Kevin O’Neill led the effort with five stops. They were two of 11 players with at least three stops on the night. Big Red got the scoring started less than five minutes into the first quarter when Colbert moved the Cardinals 53 yards in just three plays for the touchdown. The drive was capped by an 11-yard pass from Colbert to junior Case Robinson. After a forcing a three-and-out, the LU offense was back on the march. Colbert directed an eight-play, 47-yard drive that ended with the senior calling his own number. Colbert carried the ball in from six yards out. Sophomore Kirkland Banks caught a three-yard touchdown pass from Colbert less than four-minutes later to give the Red and White a commanding 21-0 lead after the first 15 minutes. LU kept up the pressure in the second quarter scoring four more touchdowns. Juniors Isaiah Howard, A.J. Walker and Derrion Randle and sophomore Adam Morse each recorded their first touchdowns of the season. All seven first half scores were recorded by a different player. The Cardinals opened the second half with a new quarterback – transfer Jordan Hoy – and focused on the ground game. Hoy took the Cards down the field on a 10-play drive – with only one pass play – to take a 56-0 advantage. Hoy capped off the drive with a 10-yard run for the score. Kentucky Christian never seriously threatened LU in the second half as the Red and White scored the game’s first 70 points before the Knights cracked the scoreboard. KCU closed out the scoring with a 49-yard pass from Jug Smith to Dametric McGrue with just over five minutes remain-ing.

LUBBOCK, Texas – Lamar University struggled to find its rhythm offensively falling to Texas Tech, 77-0, Saturday afternoon at Jones AT&T Stadium. The Cardinals recorded 182 yards of total offense including 102 rushing. Texas Tech racked up 683 yards, including 419 through the air. Senior Darrel Colbert, Jr., got the start and finished the day completing 9-of-26 passes for 72 yards. He also carried the ball 10 times for 20 yards. Senior Davon Jernigan and Rodney Randle, Sr. led the Cardinals’ defensive effort with eight tackles. After being quickly forced off the field on their first possession, Texas Tech took the game’s first lead with an eight-play, 51-yard drive that ended with an 11-yard pass from Alan Bowman to Ja’Deion High in the back corner of the end zone with 10:22 remaining in the first. The Red Raiders added to their lead following a big play from their special teams. After taking a sack deep in their own territory, LU was forced to punt the ball away. Junior Tyler Slaydon booted a 42-yard punt but Tech’s De’Quan Bowman returned it 49 yards down to the Cardinals’ six-yard line. Texas Tech was able to punch it in on the very next play to take a 14-0 lead with 4:42 remaining in the first. Tech made it a three-touchdown lead when Bowman guided the offense on a 12-play, 80-yard drive consuming four minutes off the clock. The drive ended with an eight-yard run from Tech’s SaRodorick Thompson with 12:07 remaining in the opening half. Tech tacked on three more touch-downs before the close of the first half, including one with 17 seconds remaining before intermission, to take a 42-0 lead into the locker room. Despite the halftime score, the Red Raiders only held the ball 2:40 longer than LU. Tech went into the locker room with 373 yards of total offense, including 282 through the air. The Red and White was held to 71 yards in the opening 30 minutes. The Cardinals were knocking on the door in the third quarter following a Garrison Mitchell interception at the Tech 36-yard line, but Tech’s defense stiffened as LU turned the ball over on downs four plays later. Tech closed out the game with five more scores in the second half, two of which were set up by LU turnovers.

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University overcame an early 28-point deficit only to have a potential game-tying point-after attempt blocked late in the fourth quarter as Northwestern State escaped with a 49-48 victory at Provost Umphrey Stadium Saturday evening. Senior Darrel Colbert, Jr. completed 15 passes for 263 yards and four touchdowns. He also carried the ball 27 times for 137 yards and three scores. He becomes the second LU quarterback to rush for more than 100 yards in a game this season. Classmate Dorian Gaston hauled in four receptions for 114 yards and three touchdowns. After spotting Northwestern State 28 points, the Cardinals began to fight back. The Red and White cracked the scoreboard with 4:04 remaining in the second quarter when Colbert guided the Cardinals on a seven-play, 65-yard drive that was capped by a three-yard run from the QB for the score. LU finally pulled even midway through the third quarter quarter when Colbert found Gaston open over the middle. Unfortunately, the Demons would surge back in front by two scores with 9:30 remaining, but the Cards had one more come back left in them pulling within a point, 49-48 with 2:38 remaining in the game. Unfortunately, the would-be game-tying PAT was blocked and the Cardinald wouldn’t have another chance to score as Northwestern State ran out the clock.

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University grabbed a seven-point halftime lead only to watch South-eastern Louisiana score 17 straight to open the second half and hold on for a 30-24 victory over the Cardinals to spoil Homecoming. The Cardinals (1-3/0-2 Southland) finished the night with 351 yards of total offense, including 180 on the ground. Unfortunately for Big Red, 269 of the 351 came in the first half. Southeastern gained 494 yards on the ground, but LU’s defense forced the Lions (1-3/1-1 SLC) into five turnovers. Senior Darrel Colbert, Jr. ended the night completing 15-of-27 (.556) passes for 171 yards and a touchdown and carried the ball 21 times for 67 yards and a score. Junior A.J. Walker paced the Cardinals’ ground attack with nine carries for a season-high 88 yards. Senior Lane Taylor led the Cardinals’ defensive effort with 11 tackles – 10 unassisted. Class-mate Davon Jernigan recorded the biggest highlight of the night with an interception and return it 53 yards for a score. He also recorded seven tackles, recovered a fumble and broke up a pass. Similar to last week, the Cardinals got out to a slow start but unlike the Southland opener Big Red limited its guests to just one score in the first quarter. LU then turned to its defense to flip the momentum. Trailing by seven points, Jernigan picked of SLU’s Chason Virgil and returned it 53 yards for the score. It remained a one-point lead for the Lions until the 6:26 mark when another interception set up the Cards’ second score. After a Tyler Rios interception gave LU the ball on the Cardinals’ 27, the Cards were able to score five plays later and make good on the two-point conversion. LU went into the locker room with a seven-point lead after both teams converted a field goal. The Lions came out of locker room and scored 17 straight to build a 10-point lead and held on for the vicotry. The Cardinals made a late charge when Colbert found senior Dewan Thompson, Jr. in the back of the end zone to pull LU within three, 27-24, with just over five minutes remaining, but the Lions moved the ball down the field on their final possession killing off the majority of the clock before converting a field goal with seconds remaining in the game.

THIBODAUX, La. – For the second week in a row Lamar University held a first half, but the nation-ally ranked Nicholls Colonels used a strong second half to pull away for the 50-27 victory Saturday at Guidry Stadium. The Cardinals finished the day with 361 yards of total offense, but Nicholls ended the night with 613 – the majority of which came in the second half. Senior Darrel Colbert, Jr. completed 10 passes for 159 yards and one touchdown – a 44-yard pass to Mason Sikes. Junior A.J. Walker led the Cards’ ground attack with 12 carries for 77 yards, while Colbert had 19 for 60 and a score. Senior Davon Jernigan led LU’s defense with seven unassisted tackles, including two inter-ceptions. It marks his third pick in the team’s past two games. LU forced a stop on Nicholls’ first possession of game, but on LU’s opening drive Colbert’s third-down pass went through the hands of the receiver ricocheted off a defender and came down into the hands of Austin Dickerson who returned it 26 yards for the game’s first score. LU cut into the lead on their next possession with an Elvin Martinez 47-yard field goal. On the second play of the ensuing drive, Big Red’s defense stripped the ball and recovered it near midfield which led to the Cards’ next score (a two-yard plunge from Colbert). The Cards’ next score was also set up by a turnover – a Jernigan interception. The pick set up and 44-yard touchdown pass to Mason Sikes for a touchdown to give LU back the lead. Unfortunately, the Colonels outscored LU, 37-10 to close out the game.

BEAUMONT, Texas – Senior Lane Taylor broke through the line to block Cody Seidel’s 40-yard field goal attempt with 12 seconds on the clock, and junior Caleb Abrom picked up the loose ball and sprinted 66 yards for the game-winning touchdown as Lamar University defeated Incarnate Word in thrilling fashion, 27-21, Saturday afternoon at Provost Umphrey Stadium. The heart-stopping victory put an end to the Cards four-game skid, and handed UIW its first conference setback of the season. The game saw more than 1,000 yards of total offense as the Red and White finished the day with 422, including 254 through the air. Senior Darrel Colbert, Jr. completed 14 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns, and also carried the ball 20 times for 66 yards and a score. The Cardinals rushed for 168 yards in the game led by the return of sophomore Myles Wanza. The Houston native had 14 carries for 79 yards in his first game back since Texas Tech. Despite the offensive numbers, it was the LU (2-4/1-3 SLC) defense that stole the spotlight in the opening 30 minutes of action. The Cardinals kept their guests off the scoreboard by taking the ball away in the first half. LU picked off four passes in the game led by two from Garrison Mitchell. Senior Rodney Randle, Jr. and Taylor had the other two picks. Big Red’s defense also did what no other team has been able to accomplish this season. UIW’s running back Ra’Quanne Dickens entered the game with an astounding 9.2 yards per carry but the Red and White held him to just 57 yards on 17 carries (3.4 ypc). The Southland’s other Cardinals cracked the scoreboard first when Jon Copeland hooked up with Lamont Johnson for a 50-yard touchdown. The 7-0 lead held until the second quarter when LU evened things up. After Taylor picked off a Copeland pass at the LU 11, Colbert connected with ju-nior Jawun Ruffin on the very next play for one of the biggest plays in program history. Colbert found Ruffin open five yards down the field and Ruffin zig-zagged his way through traffic 89 yards for the touchdown – it is the longest pass play in program history. It breaks a record which was originally set during the 1957 season (George Parks to Larry Ward). The score would remain tied at 7 until the second half when the two teams combined for 34 points. The second half was setting up as the team who had the ball last would win as both teams appeared to be moving the ball will, but that changed after UIW tied the game at 21. Following an LU punt, UIW took over from its own 13 with just under two minutes remaining. San Antonio’s version of the Cardinals methodically moved the ball down the field aided by a pass interference against LU, to set up a 40-yard Seidel attempt with 12 seconds on the clock. Schultz had all three of his timeouts remaining and elected to use one. Once the team’s lined back up Schultz called his second timeout, but the gamesmanship still wasn’t finished. After the second timeout, the ball was snapped and it had the distance but Schultz called his third and final timeout just prior to the snap. It was just what LU needed as Taylor and Abrom stepped into the spotlight to play the role of hero.

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University rushed for 435 yards, including 168 yards and two touch-downs from sophomore Myles Wanza, to upset No. 14 Sam Houston State, 41-23, Saturday. The Cardinals (3-4/2-3 Southland) took the lead with 2:55 remaining in the first half and never looked back. The Cards finished the day with 566 yards of total offense and were led by two players who rushed for more than 100. In addition to Wanza (who averaged 11.2 yards per carry), junior A.J. Walker added 23 carries for 121 yards. Senior Darrel Colbert, Jr., had 12 carries for 63 yards and two touchdowns. Big Red’s defense held Sam Houston State to 382 yards of offense and less than 100 rushing (79). The Cardinals’ defensive effort was led by senior Davon Jernigan who ended the night with a team-high 16 tackles, including one for a loss. For the Cardinals, it was their first win over a nationally ranked opponent since 2015 when it also defeated Sam Houston State, who was ranked third that year. For the Bearkat defense, the 41 points that LU hung on the scoreboard Saturday is the most surrendered by SHSU all season. After giving up the game’s first score, the Cardinals rallied to score 17 of the next 24 points. Sophomore Elvin Martinez pulled LU within three with his 26-yard field goal less than two minutes after Sam Houston’s game-opening score. Sam Houston pushed it’s lead to 10, 13-3, before LU began its offensive onslaught. Big Red closed out the opening quarter with a six-play, 42-yard drive that ended with a 17-yard run from Wanza with 45 seconds remaining in the first. The score remained unchanged until under the three-minute mark when Big Red was back on the march. Colbert guided a seven-play 80-yard drive that ended with him scrambling for a 14-yard run for the score. It gave the Cardinals their first lead of the game, 17-13, which they took into the locker room. The Cardinals didn’t waste any time picking up in the second half where it left off in the first. Colbert drove the Cardinals down the field in 2:09 and added to the lead with an eight-yard scoring run. The score pushed Big Red’s lead to 11, 24-13. Sam Houston surged back with 10-straight points to pull within four points, but the Cardinals responded with consecutive touchdowns to close the game.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Junior quarterback Jordan Hoy rushed for 225 yards in his first career start to lead Lamar University to a 24-17 victory at Stephen F. Austin. The victory – LU’s third con-secutive – moved the Cardinals back to .500 on the season (4-4/3-3 Southland). Big Red finished the game with 441 yards of total offense, including 369 on the ground. Hoy finished the day with 21 carries for 225 yards and two scores, including a season-long 68-yard rush. He also completed 11-of-16 passes for 72 yards. SFA finished the day with 420 yards of offense. Sophomore Myles Wanza added 16 carries for 85 yards, while A.J. Walker had 14 for 45. Junior Daniel Crosley had five tackles, including 3.5 for losses, and 1.5 sacks. He also had two QB hurries, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. SFA appeared poised to score the game’s first points until Dedrick Garner blocked a Stormy Ruiz 28-yard field goal attempt – third block in as many weeks. LU’s offense turned the stop into momentum driving the ball down the field for the game’s first score. The nine-play, 80-yard drive consumed 2:42 off the clock and ended with a two-yard run from Hoy. The score was set up by a 44-yard scamper from Hoy to move the ball into Lumberjack territory. The Cardinals added to their lead midway through the second quarter when Hoy kept the ball on the third play of the drive and carried 68 yards for the score. Big Red also tacked on a field goal before halftime to take a 17-0 lead into the locker room. The Cardinals hung nearly 300 yards of total offense on their hosts in the first 30 minutes, including 240 yards on the ground. LU’s defense was just as tough holding the Lumberjacks to 146 yards of offense. SFA could manage just 59 yards on the ground in the opening half of action. The Lumberjacks finally dented the scoreboard with 8:29 remaining in the third quarter when SFA’s Jake Blumrick found Tamrick Pace in the back-left corner of the end zone. The score trimmed LU’s advantage to 10, 17-7. SFA got the ball back and moved it deep into Cardinal territory but on 2nd-and-goal from the seven, Blumrick was dropped by Crosley who jarred the ball loose and recovered it on the LU 18. The Cards cashed the turnover in for points seven plays later in a drive that consisted of 6, 8, 17, 12, 7, 19 and 9-yard plays. The scoring play had a few heart-stopping moments as junior A.J. Walk-er got the carry and took it down to the two before losing the football. It was recovered by senior Dewan Thompson, Jr. as he fell into the end zone. SFA was able to take the next possession and move it down into Big Red territory before the drive stalled and the ‘Jacks were forced to settle for a 46-yard field goal. SFA tacked on one more TD late but could get no closer as LU picked up its third straight win.

CONWAY, Ark. – Junior Jordan Hoy competed 15 passes for 346 yards and four touchdowns to lead Lamar University to a stunning, 38-24, victory at No. 19 Central Arkansas. The victory – LU’s second consecutive over a nationally ranked opponent – marked the first time in program history it defeated Central Arkansas. The Cards finished the game with 512 yards of total offense, including 346 through the air. Hoy also led LU with 23 carries for 49 yards and a touchdown. Senior Isaiah Howard hauled in three passes for 110 yards and a score. Big Red’s defense held UCA to 435 yards and was led by nine tackles from Lane Taylor. It didn’t take long for LU to draw first blood. Just 21 seconds into the 1st Hoy found sopho-more tight end Mason Sikes running wide open down the near sideline for the score. The 28-yard strike was set up by a 47-yard rush from sophomore Kirkland Banks on the first play of the game. Unfortunately, UCA answered with a 70-yard drive to tie the game less than three minutes later. Proving LU could strike quickly and record a time-consuming drive, Big Red reclaimed the lead midway through the first when Hoy carried the ball in from one-yard out to cap a 14-play, 75-yard drive which took 4:45 off the clock. The Cards surrendered a 51-yard run to UCA’s Kierre Crossley on the first play of the next drive but the defense stiffened forcing a UCA field goal.. The Red and White added to their lead late in the first quarter. After forcing a UCA punt, Hoy hit senior Isaiah Howard wide open over the middle of the field for a 77-yard touchdown. The scoring play took just 11 seconds off the clock and gave LU a 21-10 advantage. Big plays continued to be the theme in the first half. After stopping the Bears’ offense early in the second quarter, the Cards marched the ball 67 yards down the field in just 57 seconds for a score. The Bears answered with consecutive field goals but LU stopped the small rally on their next possession. Hoy guided the Cards on a seven-play, 88-yard drive that ended with a 40-yard pass to Sikes – his second TD grab of the night. Big Red carried the 35-16 lead into the locker room. After a first half that saw a combined 51 points, the third quarter turned into a defense struggle that lead to just three points on an LU field goal. The Bears got back on the board in the second half when Luke Ross caught a two-yard pass from Carlos Blackman out of the wildcat formation. UCA went for the two-point conversion and got it to trim the deficit down to 14 points, 38-24, with 11:36 remaining, but that would be as close as the Bears would get as the Red and White kept their hosts off the scoreboard for the remainder of the night.

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University jumped out to a two touchdown lead and never looked back defeating Houston Baptist, 38-9, on Senior Night. The victory assured LU of a winning season – just its fifth in the past 30 years – and its first since 2014. The victory pushed the Cardinals’ (6-4/5-3 Southland) win streak to five straight which is the longest since the 1972 season. The Cards finished with 372 yards of offense, including 205 on the ground. Big Red’s defense held HBU’s high-powered offense to less than 300 (278 yards), and just 19 rush yards. Junior Jordan Hoy got the start and finished the game with six completions (.667) for 111 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried the ball 12 times for 83 yards. Sophomore Myles Wanza led the ground attack for the Red and White carrying the ball a team-high 13 times for 88 yards and a score. Junior Case Robinson hauled in a team-best three catches for 88 yards and two touchdowns. The defense forced HBU into three turnovers (two interceptions and a fumble) and two of those led to Cardinal scores. For the defense, it marked the 14th and 15th interceptions of the season. The Cardinals also finished the day with 10 tackles for losses and 7.5 sacks. Senior Lane Taylor finished off his last home game with nine solo stops, including one for a loss and an intercep-tion. The other interception came from Garrison Mitchell who returned it 76 yards to setup a score. The Cardinals jumped out to two-touchdown lead to open the game on two contrasting drives. LU took their opening drive and drove it 81 yards on 12 plays which was capped by a five-yard run from Kirkland Banks. HBU followed by driving the ball deep into Big Red territory only to have Mitch-ell snag a ball on the LU 8 which had been batted in the air and return 76 yards. The interception set up Big Red’s next touchdown which came on the very next play, a 16-yard pass to Case Robinson. The Huskies finally cracked the scoreboard midway through the second quarter when Bailey Zappe connected with David Racine from 14 yards out to trim the lead to seven, 14-7. After pinning LU deep in its own territory just minutes later, the HBU defense recorded a safety to pull with five, 14-9. The defensive score sparked its offense as HBU was on the move again and marched the ball down into LU territory attempting to take the lead heading into the locker room, but on the final play of the half Zappe took a 14-yard sack and fumbled the ball which was recovered and returned 47 yards by senior Chaston Brooks. The play gave LU a 21-9 lead heading into the locker room and the Huskies never recovered. The Cardinals came out in the second half and tacked on three more scores to pick up their sixth victory of the season. The first was a 46-yard pass from Hoy to Robinson – his second of the night – followed by a 22-yard scamper from Wanza. LU closed out the game with a 30-yard field goal from Elvin Martinez in the fourth quarter.

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Trailing by three with just over three minutes remaining, senior Darrel Col-bert, Jr. guided Lamar University on a four-play, 86-yard drive that ended with a one-yard plunge for the game-winning score. The Cardinals’ defense held on the final drive to preserve the 21-17 victory at Cowboy Stadium. The victory – LU’s second over McNeese since the program’s return and just the 10th all-time – pushed the Cardinals win streak to six consecutive games as the Red and White ended the regular season with a 7-4 overall mark and third in Southland with a 6-3 mark. LU finished the night with 448 yards of total offense, outgaining their hosts by nearly 150 yards. The majority of the Cards damage came on the ground rushing for 279 yards. Colbert led the way with 19 carries for 110 yards and was one of three to rush for at least 81 yards in the game. Colbert also completed 9-of-14 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown. Junior Case Robinson had two very key receptions in the game for 80 yards and a score. Defensively, the Cardinals were led by seniors Davon Jernigan who had eight tackles and the interception on McNeese’s final drive to ice the victory. The Cardinals broke through on its second drive. Big Red started the drive on their 24 and moved the ball 76 yards down the field on six plays. The drive ended with a 14-yard run from junior A.J. Walker. The score remained 7-0 until the end of the first half when McNeese put together its first scoring drive of the day. Gunnar Rayborn capped a 12-play, 83-yard drive by converting a 29-yard field goal with 92 second remaining in the half. Big Red added to its lead on fourth and less than a yard from the McNeese 36. After Colbert got stopped on a run up the middle, Colbert faked the run on fourth down and dumped the ball off over the middle to Robinson for a 36-yard touchdown pass. The score gave LU a 14-3 advantage with 4:12 remaining in the third quarter. The momentum lasted mere seconds as Benjamin Jones took the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. McNeese lined up for a two-point conversion but had the pass batted away at the last second. The Cardinals put together another strong drive but it stalled at the McNeese 27. Big Red elected to attempt the field goal, but Martinez’s kick was wide left. The Cowboys took advantage two plays later when David Hamm broke a tackle and carried the ball 63 yards for the score to give McNeese its first lead of the game, 15-14. The Cowboys went for two again and converted it to take a three-point lead, 17-14, with 14:39 remaining. The Cowboys held the lead down the stretch as LU got the ball back with 3:23 remaining. The moment was setup for high drama, but Colbert and company didn’t make Big Red fans wait long for the final outcome. After runs of 18 and 28 yards from Colbert and sophomore Myles Wanza, re-spectively, Colbert went for it all on the third play of the drive. Scrambling out of the pocket, Colbert caught Zae Giles streaking the down middle of the field and heaved his way. Giles got a step on the defender and dove for the pass at the last second hauling it in at the one. Colbert put the Cards back in front on the next play with his one-yard plunge across the goal line.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Lamar University came up just short in their first NCAA FCS playoff appear-ance dropping a 16-13 decision at Northern Iowa. LU had two second half field goals miss their mark in the final 30 minutes which wound up being the difference in a game. The Cards finished the day with 417 yards of total offense and outgained their hosts by 71 yards. Senior Darrel Colbert, Jr. led the offense completing 14 passes for 268 yards and two scores. Sophomore Myles Wanza led the ground attack with 14 carries for 85 yards. It didn’t take long for the Cardinals to silence the crowd scoring their first touchdown on the second play from scrimmage. Colbert found sophomore Kirkland Banks down the far sideline and Banks turned up field untouched for 73 yards and the score. Unfortunately, UNI’s Deion McShane took the ensuing kickoff 59 yards which set up a 21-yard field goal just moments later. Big Red proved they could score without the use of a quick strike on their next possession. The Cardinals marched the ball 75 yards down the field on 11 plays which set up a 25-yard pass from Colbert to junior Case Robinson for a 13-3 advantage. The Panthers appeared to answer right back with a 35-yard TD pass, but the play was negat-ed due to a penalty and UNI was forced to punt, but the Cards couldn’t take advantage and punted it right back. After forcing the Cardinals to punt the ball away late in the first quarter, UNI put together a drive moving the ball deep into LU territory before the drive stalled and they were forced to settle for a 44-yard Austin Errthum field goal to trim the lead to seven, 13-6, with 8:16 remaining in the half. The Cardinals held the advantage until less than two minutes remaining when Eli Dunne found Jalen Rima open down the far sideline for a 32-yard scoring strike to tie the game at 13. With less than a minute remaining in the half LU went for the lead heading into the locker room but Col-bert’s pass was picked off in the end zone to send the game into the locker room all knotted at 13. The Cardinals appeared to make the first big break of the second half. With UNI starting a drive inside their own 20, Dedrick Garner batted a pass in the air which Chaston Brooks hauled in. Unfortunately, the Cards had to settle for a 42-yard field goal attempt, but it was pushed wide right. The Panthers took their first lead of the game with 13:09 remaining in the contest when Errthum booted a 35-yard field goal just minutes later. Facing 4th-and-15 from their own 30, Schultz dialed up one of the gutsiest calls of his career. LU snapped the ball to Brandon Arnold who rambled 23 yards – included breaking one tackle – to gain the first down. After a 28-yard completion from Colbert to junior Jawun Ruffin LU appeared to be in business, but the Red and White coughed up the ball on the following play. LU got the ball back late and drove it down to the UNI 19 to set up 36-yard field goal, but the kick sailed wide right. UNI’s offense was able to run the clock on the following possession. The Cardinals close out their historic campaign with just their second winning season since the program’s return (7-5), and just the fifth winning season in the past 30 years.
