The Cardinals shut out the Houston Texans 32-0 in the preseason opener last week at University of Phoenix Stadium. The win came exactly one year a er Arizona shut out the Packers 17-0 in the 2013 preseason opener in Green Bay (8/9/13) - which was also the last me any team posted a shut-out in the preseason.

Last year, it took the Cardinals over seven quarters of preseason ac on - spanning 109 minutes, 5 seconds - to give up their fi rst points of the sea-son. Arizona shut out Green Bay and the following week kept Dallas score-less un l the fourth quarter.

Arizona won in all facets of the game last week against the Texans, and below are a few of the highlights:• The Cardinals held a 42:07 to 17:53 advantage in me of possession• Arizona racked up 27 total fi rst downs, while allowing just nine• The Cardinals coverted 11 of 17 third down a empts while forcing the Texans into an 0 for 8 performance on third down• Arizona piled up 407 yards of off ense while allowing just 172 yards. WR Jaron BrownThe second-year pro - a rookie free agent out of Clemson who appeared in all 16 games last season - con nued his strong preseason with his showing against the Texans. Brown started the game and fi nished with two recep- ons for 15 yards, including an impressive fi ve-yard TD grab in traffi c that

capped the Cardinals second drive and gave the team a 14-0 lead in the fi rst quarter.

CB Antonio Cromar eMaking his Arizona debut, Cromar e posted the game’s fi rst INT when he picked off a Ryan Fitzpatrick pass in the fi rst quarter. He returned the INT fi ve yards to set up an Arizona fi eld goal, giving the Cards a 17-0 fi rst quar-ter lead.

K Chandler CatanzaroOne of the most heated ba les of the preseason for Arizona is taking place at the kicker posi on. Rookie Chandler Catanzaro handled the kicking du- es vs. Houston last week and was impressive. He hit all three FG a empts

and pinned the Texans deep on kickoff s. Following their fi ve kickoff returns, Houston started possessions on their own 18, 13, 16, 10 and 7 yard lines. Catanzaro also posted two touchbacks.

Head Coach Bruce Arians had high praise for the rookie following the game. “His kickoff s were outstanding. He had three behind the 15-yard line, when they were bringing them out. He was perfect, and I liked his demeanor.”

Cardinals rookie WR John Brown - the team’s third-round pick (91st overall) in the NFL Dra - has been crea ng a buzz since he debuted at mini-camp in the off season. During his fi rst NFL game ac on last week, he con nued to show why coaches and fellow players have taken no ce of the 5-11 receiver out of Pi sburg State.

Playing with the fi rst team off ense, Brown hauled in QB Carson Palmer’s fi rst comple on of the season on the opening drive, a 25-yard recep on on 3rd-n-16 that kept the drive going. He never slowed down from there, fi nishing his debut with four recep ons for 87 yards, including 71 yards on three third down recep ons.

Brown’s 87 receiving yards represented the fourth-best single-game total in the NFL during preseason play and second-best total by a rookie.

All of that stuff is gone. The confi dence level is very high. There’s a lot of things we need to con nue to get be er at, and we will because we s ll have a lot of camp le .”

However, academic challenges forced him to miss the 2009 season, and then Brown’s world changed in 2010 when his half-brother, James Walker, who played at NAIA school MidAmerica Nazarene University, was shot in Florida.

Walker remained in the hospital for months, and during that me Brown trans-ferred to Coff eyville Community College in Kansas, but he wasn’t awarded one of the team’s out-of-state scholarships and ended up si ng out another year. However, coaches at Pi sburg State in Kansas had learned of him and off ered him a scholarship. He signed his le er of intent in April 2011, and hours later he received the news Walker had died.

Brown made a promise to his brother that he would score the fi rst me he touched the ball at Pi sburg State, and he made good on that pledge when he returned a punt 84 yards for a TD in the 2011 season opener. He never looked back, going on to set school career records with 185 recep ons for 3,387 yards and 34 TDs. He totaled 45 TDs at Pi sburg State, adding six rushing, three punt return and two kickoff return scores.

Brown ran the 40-yard dash in 4.34 seconds at February’s combine, the sec-ond-fastest me among wide receivers, and the Cardinals chose him this past May with their second pick in the third round, the 91st overall selec on.

Many around the Cardinals believe Brown can be a major contributor as a rookie, but no ma er what happens, is guided by the spirit of his brother.

“Every day I wake up I hear him,” he said. “When I’m red, when I’m working out and thinking about giving up, I can hear him in my head. It just pushes me to go even harder.”

When the Cardinals signed WR Ted Ginn, Jr. as an unrestricted free agent in the off season, they acquired the proven down fi eld threat favored in the off ense of head coach Bruce Arians.

Now entering his eighth NFL season, Ginn is coming off one of his best sea-sons as a WR, having hauled in 36 recep ons for 556 yards and a career-high fi ve TDs for the Carolina Panthers in 2013. His 15.4-yard receiving average also represented a career high.

For his career, Ginn has appeared in 104 games (40 starts) and amassed 10,610 all-purpose yards (2,604 receiving, 239 rushing, 1,741 punt return and 6,026 kickoff return) and 19 TDs.

Scoring From A Distance• Of Ginn’s 19 career TDs, 16 covered at least 25 yards, 10 covered 40+ yards and seven covered 50+ yards. Of his last 16 TDs, 15 covered at least 25 yards.• His three career TDs of 100+ yards (102, 101, 100) are ed with Josh Cribbs, Percy Harvin, Tony Horne and Cardinals HOFer Ollie Matson for the most in NFL history.

A Threat In All Facets Since entering the league as fi rst round dra pick in 2007, Ginn has been one of the game’s most produc ve all-around players, serving as a threat on of-fense and on special teams. His 1,496 all-purpose yards in 2013 represented his sixth season with at least 1,400 all-purpose yards, with only the Eagles Darren Sproles and Denver’s Wes Welker (seven each) accumula ng more seasons with 1.400+ yards among ac ve players.

• Ginn joins Sproles as the only players in NFL history with 200+ rushing yards, 2,500+ receiving yards, 1,500+ punt return yards and 6,000+ kickoff return yards in their career.

• Ginn is also one of just 15 players in NFL history - and four ac ve players (Darren Sproles, Steve Smith and Josh Cribbs) - with mul ple rushing, receiv-ing, punt return and kickoff return TDs.

From the me he fi rst stepped on the fi eld in a Car-dinals uniform, S Tyrann Mathieu proved Arizona had something special in its third round pick (69th overall) in the 2013 NFL Dra .

It took Mathieu just over 12 minutes into his fi rst NFL game to make one of the Cards biggest plays of the season, and as the season progressed he became the team’s most versa le defender and a frontrunner for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year before tearing the ACL and LCL in his le knee in Week 14 vs. St. Louis, ending his season.

Since that me, Mathieu has been rehabbing, work-ing his way back to the fi eld. He entered training camp on the PUP list, and although he gets impa ent to return, he has keeps himself busy helping out his defensive backfi eld mates, par cularly rookie S Deone Bucannon.

“He’s begging me to come off PUP, but he’s doing a great job of coaching Deone (Bucannon) out there and keeping himself mentally in it,” said head coach Bruce Arians.

Arians knows that when Mathieu is ready to come back, it won’t take long for the second-year standout to return to form. When asked at the begin-ning of camp how long it would take Mathieu to get back into game shape, Arians responded “Him? A day. That’s all he does.”

As A Rookie - A Glimpse Of What Was To ComeIn the fi rst quarter of the season opener at St. Louis, Mathieu chased down Rams TE Jared Cook a er a long pass play and knocked the ball loose from behind just as Cook was about to cross the goal line. The ball rolled into the end zone where it was recovered by the Cardinals for a touchback.

Mathieu Earns NFL Honor For OctoberMathieu’s play was quickly no ced around the league. In just his second month as a pro, he was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month for October a er he totaled 21 tackles, 2 TFL, a sack, an INT and fi ve passes defensed in the month.

A Season SnapshotIn 13 games played, Mathieu recorded 63 tackles, a sack, two INTs, 15 passes defensed, a forced fumble, fi ve tackles for loss and three QB pressures. He was one of just three rookies in the NFL with at least two INTs, a sack and a forced fumble on the season, joining Buff alo LB Kiko Alonso and New Eng-land CB Logan Ryan.

In his fi rst game of his rookie season in 2011, CB Patrick Peterson was tasked with covering Panthers All-Pro WR Steve Smith. In all 47 games that followed, Peterson was always given the task of covering the opponent’s #1 receiver.

Far from shying away from the task, Peterson embraced it and the results include 12 INTs, 60 passes defensed, two Pro Bowl selec ons (as a corner-back) and – most recently – a spot on the NFL’s fi rst-team All-Pro list.

A Pro Bowler in each of his fi rst two seasons (Kick Returner, 2011; Corner-back, 2012), Peterson earned his third career Pro Bowl selec on and was named fi rst-team All-Pro in 2013. He became the seventh player in NFL history to be chosen to three Pro Bowls before his 24th birthday and joins Ollie Matson (1952, ’54, ’55) as the only players in team history selected to the Pro Bowl in each of their fi rst three seasons.

The Cardinals defense featured the NFL’s top run defense in 2013, and one of main reasons opponents had trouble gaining ground against Arizona was a pair of stout run nose tackles - former fi rst round selec on NT Dan Wil-liams and Alameda Ta’amu, claimed off waivers by the Cardinals as a free agent just prior to the start of the ‘13 season.

Now entering his fi h NFL season, Williams posted one of his fi nest cam-paigns last season, totaling 34 tackles, a sack and an INT. Williams recorded his fi rst sack, INT and TD last season, including a two-yard INT return for a TD in the season opener at St. Louis. His fi rst career sack came in the season fi nale vs. San Francisco.

Willliams’ solid season in ‘13 came despite playing through tragedy. A regu-lar fi xture at Cardinals games both at home and on the road, Williams’ fa-ther, Thomas Williams, who made his home in Memphis, was on the way to New Orleans to watch Dan play when he was killed in an automobile accident near Jackson, MS. Williams’ mother and sister were also in the car and were both hospitalized.

Claimed off waivers from the Steelers on 9/1, Ta’amu went on to appear in 14 games for Arizona last season and recorded 13 tackles. Although his stat line doesn’t job off the page, Ta’amu developed into a key rota on piece alongside Williams last season.

Last season, Cardinals CB Jus n Bethel was selected to his fi rst career Pro Bowl in just his second NFL season, having quickly earned a reputa on as one of the most dynamic special teams performers in the league.

In 2013, Bethel recorded 21 special teams tackles, blocked two FGAs, recov-ered a muff ed kickoff and downed four punts inside the opponents 10-yard line (4, 7, 6 and 1-yard lines).

Bethel became just the third Cardinal ever to be selected as the Pro Bowl’s special teams player—Sean Morey (2008) and Ron Wolfl ey (1986-89)—and he also became the fi rst player selected to the Pro Bowl from Presbyterian College.

Selected by the Cards in the sixth round (177th overall) of the 2012 NFL Dra out of Presbyterian, Bethel established a Big South record with nine blocked kicks in his collegiate career. As a rookie in 2012, he made his presence felt immediately when he blocked three kicks (PAT, punt, FG) in the preseason.

During the 2014 preseason, the NFL is trying something new with extra point a empts. The rules governing extra point a empts did not change, but they are resul ng in an experiment:

• For the Hall of Fame Game and the fi rst two weeks of the preseason, the ball will be spo ed at the 15-yard line for extra point kick a empts. This will be done to gather informa on regarding possible future changes to make these plays more compe ve and exci ng for fans. The two-point try will remain at the two-yard line during this experiment.

In addi on to the experiment with PATs, the league made a permanent change to the goal posts, which were heightened by fi ve feet on each side.
