Dear Parents, Students and Community Members, The enjoyable start to Term 4 continues with a range of events, as well as children highly engaged in their interesting classroom learning programs. The Year 3’s participated in the ‘Food Sensations’ program provided by Foodbank. The chil-dren learnt about healthy eating while preparing and cooking a number of delicious dishes.

The Elements of Drama program sponsored by the Town of Cambridge was very well received by the children in Years 1 - 5. The children enjoyed performing their work to their class at the final session of the program on Thursday 25 October.

The Year 6 children enjoyed their incursion Mosaic Mak-ing with Bunnings.

The children from Kindergarten to Year 6 are busily working on their dance program. This work will culminate on Wednesday 12 December commencing at 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm when the children perform their routines for their parents.

On Thursday 1 November participating classes will be a part of the Count Us In music morning where over 600,000 children from across Australia all sing a designated song at the same time. This event will be taking place in our undercover area from 9:00 am until approximately 9:30 am. Thank you to our music teacher, Ms Emily Ruddock, for her great work with organising this event. It will be a joyful way to start the day!

Swimming lessons for children in Pre Primary to Year 6 commence on Monday 5 November and continue for two weeks. Please refer to the information sent home previously about this event.

YEAR 1 2019

To assist parents in supporting their children with the transition from Pre Primary to Year 1, parents of current Pre Primary children that have their first child in the family moving into primary school in 2019 are invited to attend a general information session on Friday 30 November commencing at 2:30 pm in the school library. Class teacher/ parent meetings will be held early in Term 1 2019.

SCHOOL BOARD MEETING

The next meeting of the School Board is on Wednesday 7 November commencing at 2:40 pm in the Conference Room. This is an open meeting.

A summation of the work of the School Board in 2018 will be presented by our School Board Chair, Mr Kael Driscoll at the Book Presentation and Awards assembly on Thursday 13 December commencing at 8:40 am.

SCHOOL BOARD PARENT REPRESENTATIVES 2019

At the end of 2018 Mr Kael Driscoll’s and Mrs Lucy Hopkin‘s terms of office on the school board will conclude and therefore we are requiring two parent school board representatives. The length of office is either for one year or three years. Nominations are now called for and close 4:00 pm on Tuesday 6 November. Please complete the nomination form attached with the newsletter and either email or bring into the front office. If a number of nominations are received then an election will be held. If you would like to know more about the school board, please contact Mr Kael Driscoll, School board chair, Ms Diane Tomlinson or a school board member. KINDERGARTEN & PRE PRIMARY ARRANGEMENTS 2019

At this point there will be possibly 1 Kindergarten group and 2 Pre Primary classes in 2019. Please note that the arrangement outlined could alter to include 2 Kindergarten groups. Staff appointments to classes are not known.

When making decisions about children’s placement in classes the staff considers a range of educational criteria (where applicable) including:

Individual development levels (academic, social, and emotional)

Peer groups

Gender balances (where possible)

Special needs e.g.: family situation

School psychologist recommendations

Parents of Kindergarten and Pre Primary children in 2019 only at this stage are invited to submit written input with respect to class placement. The submission must be based on educational reasons and is due to Ms Tomlinson by Monday 19 November 2018. Please note that all written submissions from parents will be considered but not automatically accommodated.

Parents of children in Years 1 – 6 in 2019 will have the opportunity through a newsletter later in Term 4 to submit their written input in relation to class placement.

HELPING YOUR CHILD BUILD HEALTHY RELATIONSIPS

Parents play an important role in assisting children and young people to build self-respect. This leads to the development of the values and skills needed to express respect to others. There may be some variation in what represents respectful behaviours across different cultures. However, in any cultural context, respect is about behaviours that convey valuing and caring about another person. Helping your child develop the following skills will help them to form healthy, respectful relationships with peers and adults. Understanding and empathy: Encourage your child to think about how another person may feel about something. Empathic listening: Teach them to listen and show they understand another person’s point of view Anger Management: In times of conflict, encourage them to think first before speaking, stay calm and avoid hurtful reactions. Conflict resolution: Disagreements are normal in any relationship. It’s helpful to teach your child that to work through a problem by understanding another person’s point of view. To achieve a compromise or agreement is better than winning an argument that leaves the other person feeling bullied, hurt or embarrassed. Problem-solving and decision making skills: Rather than you offering solutions for your child’s problems, hold back and support your child to generate a few possible solutions themselves. Encourage them to think about the impact of each option on themselves and others before deciding on their action. Honesty: In a relationship where there is trust and acceptance there should be no reason to lie and honesty should be encouraged. Assertiveness: Help your child to learn how to stand up for themselves or to speak up about their values or needs in a way that is non-confrontational and still respects others. have access to mentoring programs. Entrance to academic programs is determined by the results of the Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET). SUNSMART

Fake tans provide a safe alternative to sunbathing and solarium use. However Cancer Council WA is concerned that some people mistakenly believe these tans will protect them against ultra violet radiation. This is not the case. If you are wearing fake tan be sure to take appropriate sun protection measures.

Does your child have an antibiotic allergy? Kids needed for a S P E C I A L Study! Many adults and children who have been labelled as antibiotic-allergic, may actually not be allergic to antibiotic at all! If your child carries a false label of antibiotic allergy, they may not be treated with the best antibiotics which can impact on their care. We are carrying out a study at Perth Children’s Hospital to see if we can confirm or remove allergy labels.

What’s involved? This voluntary study which runs over two years, involves a phone call with one of the friendly study doctors and the opportunity of a de-labelling challenge in a safe environment. Everyone will receive follow up phone calls to look at the effect of the antibiotic allergy on their child’s heath care.

Who is eligible? Children aged 1 to 16 with an allergy to an antibiotic.
