SAFELY TO AND FROM SCHOOL

Parents and children have been asked on numerous occa-sions through the newsletter and over the PA to follow the footpath when walking in out of the school grounds. This is the safest route to and from Dodd St. The speed limit outside a school is 40 kms during drop off and pick up times. Thank you for travelling at the correct speed during these times.

FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE

Dental health - Keep your child's teeth healthy

Teeth are important possessions. Here are some tips for keeping them healthy.

Clean teeth, gums and tongue at least twice a day with a soft toothbrush. Parents should supervise tooth brushing until children are 8 or 9 years old as children do not have the dexterity to brush the molars properly until then.

Adults and children should use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Toothpaste should be spat out after brushing and never eaten or swallowed. Do not rinse your mouth out with water after brushing your teeth.

Rinse your toothbrush thoroughly after brushing and store it hygienically. Replace your toothbrush regularly.

Older children and adults should floss their teeth daily.

Eating and drinking healthily is important for keeping your teeth healthy – try to keep away from too much sugar, especially between meals. For more dental health information, go to http://raisingchildren.net.au or http://www.dental.wa.gov.au/ . The School Dental Service provides free general dental care to school children throughout Western Australia, from pre-primary through to Year 11 (or 17th birthday). Contact your closest School Dental Therapy Centre or Dental Health Services on 9313 0555 for further information. If you require Interpreter Contact your local Community Health Nurse or Community Health Centre, Deb Aggett on 0417 851 497 for more information.

We would like to advise that we have an upcoming Academic Extension Program testing to take place on Saturday, 2 September with the closing date for applica-tions being Tuesday, 8 August. This testing is for current Year 6 students to enter Churchlands SHS in 2018 who reside in the Churchlands SHS local intake area. The application form can be downloaded from our website: www.churchlands.wa.edu.au > Learning > Academic Extension Program or by contacting Churchlands SHS on 9441 1700.

NEW LOCAL INTAKE SECONDARY SCHOOL The State Government announced its decision to build a new local intake secondary school, Inner City College (planning name), on Kitchener Park in Subiaco. Perth Modern School will remain in Roberts Road in Subiaco as the State’s only fully selective academic school.

The new inner city school is at the heart of the population growth in this area and, with its central location, will pro-vide much needed enrolment relief for secondary schools in the inner and western suburbs.

The announcement means local intake areas for Churchlands Senior High School, Shenton College and Mount Lawley Senior High School will be amended to create a local intake area for the new Inner City College. They will be released shortly and come into effect from the start of 2020 when Inner City College opens with its first cohort of Year 7 students.

Inner City College will have a full cohort of secondary students from Years 7 to 12 by 2025 and accommodate up to 2000 students in total. It will also have a Gifted and Talented academic program starting with its first intake of 32 Year 7 students when the school opens.

I am sure this news will be of interest to some of our families so I will be updating our website and including infor-mation in our next school newsletter. Further information about Inner City College is on the Department’s website.
