Practice “Random Acts of Kindness” around the house and with oneanother.Notice good behavior and point it out, praising success and good tries.Celebrate small wins. Things are new, hard and different. Break down

When a conflict brews, model breathing for 10-seconds, calling a “truce” orcue, “We need to take a break”.Notice and praise when you “catch” your child doing well/ making a positivechoice. At school, scholars earn “Caught Yas”. You can give these at home.Consider utilizing rewards & privileges to reinforce good behaviors(completing school assignments, chores, getting along with siblings, etc.)that wouldn't normally be given during less stressful times.Issue a Gratitude Challenge: Encourage all to say “Thank You” whenever

Practice the skills provided in the Second Steps lesson as a family.Frame requests in the positive. Tell children what you want them to do.Example: Instead of “Stop shouting”, try “We all need to speak quietly.” Atschool, we call this a “Level 1 Voice” or an “Indoor Voice”.Foster ownership. Teach household chores and help children show pride intheir ability to help. At school, students earn points, tickets, privileges...Mix it up. When you feel the need to get louder (ex: shout), try whispering.Kids tend to lean in to a quiet voice, whereas yelling can add anxiety ortrigger fight/flight. It’s all in the delivery.Redirect poor behavior choices. Sometimes children misbehave becausethey are bored or don't know any better. Find something else for them todo.Use Time-Outs. When a child makes a poor behavior choice, explain to themwhat they did wrong in as few words―and with as little emotion―aspossible. Remove them from the situation for a pre-set length of time (1minute per year of age is a good guide).Creative play is a great boredom buster. Make a collage out of oldcatalogs, magazines, wrapping paper...and hang it up. Build an indoor fortor castle to keep the germs at bay, bringing in favorite stuffed animals ortoys.

Parenting during a pandemic didn’t come with a handbook. We areall adapting and doing the very best we can. As aparent/grandparent myself, I am always listening for other'ssuccessful approaches. Here are some strategies to consider:

challenges into smaller parts.

someone does something thoughtful or helpful. How many smiles can you cause?

A parenting quote I keep on my wall (my reminder for times of stress andchallenge) reads: "You will never have this day with your children again.Tomorrow, they'll be a little older than they were today. This day is a gift.Just breathe, notice, study their faces and little feet. Pay attention. Relishthe charms of the present. Enjoy today, it will be over before you know it."

Much love to you and your family.Rachel "Mo" Smith [email protected] 253-391-7872

F I E L D D A Y I N F O R M A T I O N F O R F A M I L I E S We’re excited to announce that our school community will be participating in a virtualfield day event the week of May 25 – May 31!

Field Day is an important tradition at our school. It is a significant dayfor our students and our staff that marks the end of a year of hardwork and celebrates our 5th graders as leaders. We feel that in theseincredibly challenging times, this virtual event is a unique way that wecan stay connected as a community and support one another in a funand meaningful way.

Here’s How it Works: ● By now, your family should have received a set of event cards and a scorecard thatyou can use to choose which games you would like to play – check your mailbox. ● All of the events are designed to be done indoors or outdoors using commonhousehold items. No need to purchase any special equipment or supplies. Your familymay complete as many or as few events as you’d like to – it’s up to you! ● On May 25, you can go to Ms. Henry’s Lake Grove PE web page to see short film clipsshowing how to play each game – https://fwps.instructure.com/courses/58078 ● The week of May 25 - 31, our entire school will participate in the virtual events at yourown pace, and - if you choose to - complete official score cards and share photos andvideos by sending them to [email protected] to be posted on our Lake Grove Facebookpage or Lake Grove PE website for families to see. ● Every student that completes at least 4 events will receive an OPEN National Field Day certificate through the mail. Your student can submit their scorecard by taking a photo of it and emailing it to [email protected] or by mailing it in an envelope to: Dana Henry, P.O. Box 18317, Seattle, WA 98118. Let the games begin! Have a blast!
