Laena Romond and Traveller Rise Above All in $50,000 National Horse Show Hunter Classic, Presented by The Chronicle of The Horse

Hunter competition came to a pinnacle Friday, November 5 at the 138th annual Na-tional Horse Show (NHS). As the oldest indoor horse show in America, the National Horse Show brings a collection of some of the country’s top hunter riders and their horses to the Alltech Arena of the Kentucky Horse Park to contest for championship honors and a spot in the $50,000 National Horse Show Hunter Classic, presented by The Chronicle of The Horse. Throughout the first half of the week, invitations were extended to the Champion and Reserve Champion horse-and-rider combinations of hunter sections that competed over jumps at the 3’3” height or higher, with the 3’3” fence height being a new height on offer for the prestigious class. Patricia Griffith, Scott Stewart, Jean Sheptoff, Kat Fuqua, and Clara Propp each had two mounts apiece in the class to increase their chances of leaving with a portion of the pot. Heaven’s Dream and Fearless are Crowned Grand Junior and Grand Junior 3’3” Hunter Champions

Junior Hunter riders were the highlight of competition Friday morning in the Alltech Arena as each respective age group division vied for the division champion title and the coveted Overall Junior Hunter Grand Champion and Junior 3’3” Hunter Grand Champion honors. Awarded to the horse-and-rider combination with the most points accumulated in the Small Junior Hunter 15 & Under, Small Junior Hunter 16-17, Large Junior Hunter 15 & Under and Large Junior Hunter 16-17 divisions, Heaven’s Dream and Stella Propp were awarded the Junior Hunter Grand Champion title. Fearless and Bridget Hickton took home the Junior 3’3” Grand Hunter Champion honors to round out the Junior Hunter competition at the 2021 National Horse Show (NHS).

Junior Hunter riders tried their hand over an 8-obstacle stake round set by Kentucky’s very own Bobby Murphy (USA), which would ultimately decide who would be crowned division champions and Junior Hunter Grand Champion. The course offered each horse-and-rider combination the chance to showcase their horses’ strides and beautiful form over a classic hunter round that includ-ed several long lines going away from the gate, encouraging riders to gallop their mounts to meet the fences in perfect stride. In the end, Propp and Heaven’s Dream came out on top to be awarded Junior Hunter Grand Champion.

With an almost clean sweep of the Small Junior Hunter 16-17 division, Propp and Heaven’s Dream, an 11-year-old KWPN gelding owned by Isabella Griffin, were awarded the prestigious title of Junior Hunter Grand Champion. The dynamic pair started the division out strong Thursday, scor-ing a 90 in the handy round and taking home the blue ribbon, helping secure them a substantial lead going into Friday’s competition. They once again impressed the judges Friday morning in the under saddle, taking home the win and sitting them on top of the leaderboard for the division. After an impressive stake round, Propp and Heaven’s Dream were awarded a score of 90, earn-ing them the win and the “Custom Made” Perpetual Trophy, and also securing them the division championship in addition to the “Huntland” Perpetual Cup for their Overall Junior Hunter Grand Championship.

Hickton and Fearless, her own 9-year-old Hanoverian gelding, nearly made a clean sweep of the Junior 3’3” Hunter 16-17 division. Day one of the division, the dynamic duo won the first over fences class with a high score of 89, impressing the judges with their form and fluidity. The pair continued to be a force to reckon with during day two of competition, earning second in the under saddle class, winning the handy round with an 88 and earning an impressive score in the stake of a 90, helping them to secure the division champion title and Junior 3’3” Hunter Grand Champion honors.

Speed Queen Vanderveen Bests The Rest in T&R Development International Two Phase CSI4*

International show jumping competition returned to the Alltech Arena Fri-day evening for the T&R Development International Two Phase CSI4* at the 2021 National Horse Show. A highlight event of the day, 32 internation-al athletes and their top mounts would jump the two phase course in hopes of securing a piece of the $36,600 purse. Of the competitive roster, Kristen Vanderveen (USA) and Bull Run’s Faustino De Tili earned their place in the winner’s circle for their brilliant performance throughout the two phases of competition.

Bernardo Costa Cabral (POR) set forth an eight-obstacle first-phase track, testing athletes’ power through the technical course. Those who navigated a clear effort would advance to the six-fence power phase in a race against the clock that would determine the top spots on the leaderboard. Setting the pace with the first double-clear effort was Erynn Ballard (CAN) aboard Ilan Ferder’s Billy Alpen, who were the second pair in the order-of-go. The duo navigated their way around the first phase to a fault-free finish for their shot at the second phase, stopping the clocks in 33.08 seconds and setting the time to beat.

The lead would change hands when Irishman Shane Sweetnam would over-take Ballard, riding Sweet Oak Farm/Seabrook LLC’s Ideal to a clear second phase time of 32.95 seconds. Fresh off of a second place finish in Thursday’s $72,900 International Welcome Stake CSI4*, Kent Farrington (USA) blazed his way through the course soon after Sweetnam with Take The High Road LLC’s Austria 2, stopping the timers in 32.12 seconds through the second phase. Always a strong contender, Aaron Vale was the next to overtake the lead. Riding Sleepy P Ranch LLC’s Major, Vale turned in a time of 30.45 seconds without knocking any rails. However, the speed queen herself, Vanderveen, was still to be seen. As the second to last athlete to take to the course, Vanderveen was speedy as ever aboard her trusty mount Bull Run’s Faustino de Tili, a 16-year-old Belgian Warmblood stallion owned by Bull Run Jumpers Five LLC. The dynamic duo posted a second phase time of 30.18 seconds, which would prove unbeatable for the final combination on course, leaving Vanderveen and “Frosty” in their leading position. The red ribbon was ultimately awarded to Vale and the 14-year-old Danish Warm-blood gelding, Major, while Farrington rounded out the top three with Austria 2, a 13-year-old Holsteiner mare.

Earlier in the day, junior athletes took to the Alltech Arena for the EquiJet $10,000 Junior Jumper class. 19 combinations tried their hand at the track, but it was Grace Debney and Temple Equestrian LLC’s Boheme de La Roque that sped to the win in a fault-free 51.86 seconds. Mimi Gochman claimed the second and third place honors with Gochman Sport Horse LLC’s Celina BH and Dolores BH, respectively. With Celina BH, Gochman completed the course in 53.681 seconds without knocking any rails to the ground, and with Dolores BH she crossed the timers in 54.365 seconds with no faults to her name. For Gochamn’s first place finish in Thursday’s class and second place result with Celina BH in Friday’s class, Gochman received the Jean Mac-Coll Hart Perpetual Memorial Trophy.

Immediately following the EquiJet $10,000 Junior Jumper, amateur athletes had their turn in the spotlight for the North Star $10,000 Amateur-Owner Jumper class. Topping the competitive 18 horse field was Natalie Dean and Marigold Sporthorses, LLC’s Dotcom D’Authuit for their clear round in 51.558 seconds. Second place honors were awarded to Vanessa Hood and Take Two LLC’s Lou Lou VLS, who crossed the finish line in 53.812 seconds without rolling any rails. Samantha Kasowitz and Fair Play Farm’s Charlie were third best, completing the course in 56.263 seconds without lowering the height of any fences.

2022 NATIONAL HORSE SHOW

October 26 - November 6

FarmVet was founded by equestrian Christian Currey in August of 1999 and is headquartered in Franklin, Tennes-see. Christian’s equestrian background and love for both equines and canines inspired him to create the “Walgreen’s for horses” that we know today as FarmVet. Christian knew the only way to keep up with the horse show circuit was to travel with it! His idea to create a Mobile Store that would be onsite at major horse shows bolstered FarmVet’s pres-ence in the equestrian industry. FarmVet’s Mobile Stores are to this day still the bread and butter of our company. Their educated employees travel with the Mobile Stores to horse shows across the United States, like the Nation-al Horse Show, providing recommendations on products from shampoos to supplements and crucial supplies and medications that often get left behind at the barn in the

midst of the packing frenzy.

This year, FarmVet is conveniently located outside the All-tech Arena in order to better serve their clientele. To see a complete list of FarmVet products, or to contact your local
