L) The widespread use of electronic technology in business
organisations has brought about a great many benefits. At the
same time, like other types of progress, it presents certain
drawbacks.
J) On the one hand, electronic technology presents obvious
advantages.
O) First and foremost, in the speed with which it enables
information to be transmitted from one side of the world to the
other.
B) Moreover, in spite of the initial investment, which is often
expensive, in the long run, it is more cost efficient than
traditional technology.
H) At the same time, it allows greater accuracy, as it requires less human involvement, which reduces error.
I) Another advantage is the easier access to information; a wide range of information can be quickly and easily accessed.
D) Furthermore, this information is of the highest standard, thanks to the sophistication of word processors, desktop publishing and laser printers.
M) Last but not least, electronic equipment is more reliable than manual equipment and unlike human beings, it does not get tired!
C) On the other hand, there are numerous disadvantages with electronic technology.
G) Firstly, the cost can be considerable, as in addition to the initial expenses, there are installation costs, running costs and costs of training staff to consider.
.N) Secondly, there is a problem of security and confidentiality in using computers although it could be resolved by installing passwords restricting access to authorised users only.
A) Thirdly, any breakdown of equipment can hinder progress, costing the organisation lost time and possibly business.
F) Fourthly, there is the question of resistance on behalf of the personnel who generally dislike change and find it stressful adapting to new methods of working.
K) The last point is perhaps the most important since it is a health isssue; research has shown that extensive use of VDUs (Visual Display Units) can damage eyesight and may be harmful to an unborn child.
E) However, when we weigh the pros and cons, it seems that despite the negative aspects, there is so much to be gained by electronic technolology that it’s here to stay.
There are numerous advantages to Internet. First and foremost, it is very easy to use, as even a child as young as five understands what to do. Moreover, today it costs very little, even if it still remains inaccessible for the poorest members of the population? Another tremendous advantage is the limitless number of sources, which may sometimes be disreputable, so a certain degree of vigilance is necessary. The greatest advantage is probably the number of different functions Internet offers, including email, websites, social networks, blogs, and search engines. Last but not least, the Internet is undoubtedly a vector of democracy, as it is universally accessible.
