Dear readers, autumn has begun. While you are reading this Milc News issue you will probably be in full swing, your summer memories will occasionally give you up to some nostalgic sighs, but in your mind these warm memories will be more and more faded and distant. The cold comes. Rainy days arrive, gray days. It is time to react and take advantage of the many situations that autumn offers us to our convenience. Some examples? Go out with friends to pick up chestnut (chestnut is rich in vitamin A, B, C, D, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium, chlorine, calcium, fiber, reduces cholesterol and much more), taking a hot chocolate (the concentration of antioxidants in a cup of boiling chocolate is almost double that of red wine, and is about two or three times higher than that of green tea, four or five times stronger than that of black tea, while flavonoids help body to treat nitric oxide, that's why hot cocoa can improve blood flow, help reduce blood pressure and improve heart health), going to a village festival to rediscover the traditions of the land and local customs. Autumn does the rest, with its colors, its perfumes and its atmospheres full of charm and romance. Go to an organic farm on a sunday morning to buy some pumpkins, walk in a city park admiring the variety of the foliage, the pleasure of a thermal pool when the outside temperature starts to drop towards zero. However, well-being, even before what we do, comes from what we think. "Being well" is first and foremost a question of attitude, and as such it must be cultivated. We need to be predisposed to take care of ourselves and others, distancing ourselves from too many commitments, from pressures, from patterns of behavior that are often predetermined and that do not belong to us. We need to know how to slow down and regain possession of our spaces, short ones (a break for hot tea) or long ones (a weekend in a beauty farm). Man cannot produce more time than he already has, but he can manage it and above all he can do one thing: devote himself to it, or dedicate it to those ones who really love. True well-being comes from here. Good health and good wellness to all!

False food myths:

milc news

Flour from the supermarket? I take only the whole one! There is a widespread belief that wholemeal flour is better than white, perhaps because the word "whole" on the label triggers the bell in our mind that connects it to "healthy". But is it really like this? Unfortunately, no, many flours that carry the word "integral" are not really integral. The trick to recognizing truly whole flours is very simple, just read the label carefully: if in fact on the package it says "white flour / 00 with bran" then we should leave it on the shelf, since it is white flour with the

addition of processing waste that is not very healthy. The real wholemeal flour instead contains the words "whole wheat flour" in the ingredients, and it's the one we have to trust. Furthermore, although the benefits of wholemeal flour due to its high fiber content are recognized, this is also its limit; in fact excessive fiber intake can damage the intestinal mucosa and prevent the absorption of some important minerals (iron and calcium).

From the miraculous powers of Goji berries to the now famous food on the tennis courts, the banana, passing through a must of the shopping cart such as the whole wheat flour. Also this month we have placed the Milc News magnifying glass on 3 food products and their real properties.

Goji berries as an elixir of long lifeFor some time we have been talking about the miraculous power of Goji berries, considered an elixir of long life, since they would constitute one of the main foods of a centuries-old Chinese population. But can we trust these rumors? In reality, no scientific evidence has been found to show that these berries have greater power than common fruits and vegetables; it is not necessary to consider them as a superfood with magical powers, as they contain a quantity of vitamins and antioxidants similar to that contained in a portion of fresh fruit or in a healthy snack. They are therefore not to be considered as a necessity for the long life, but as a possible variation to fresh fruit.

Are bananas the food with the most potassium? After a good run or intense physical activity, we hear that we should integrate mineral salts like magnesium and potassium to restore the body's balance, and one of the most recommended foods is banana. This exotic fruit is in fact considered to be the food not only with more potassium, but also with the ability to avoid muscle pain, headaches and decreases in concentration. In reality, in the ranking of foods that contain more potassium, the banana is placed only in ninth place! In fact, before the banana, legumes, spinach, kiwi and dried fruit are better ranked. Bananas are a very convenient food to transport, but sometimes we can alternate them with dried figs!

THE DATA:A cohort study showed a 23% risk reduction in contracting diabetes type 2; the EPIC study (European Prospective Investigation Into Cancer And Nutrition) shows a 53% decrease in the incidence of metabolic risks and a 25% decrease in cancer risk.

The Mediterranean diet is not the best diet among all, but it is certainly the most complete for everyone

More than a diet, a modelThe Mediterranean model, because this is the correct wording, first of all it focuses the attention also on the aspects surrounding the table: it suggests the performance of physical activity, emphasizes the importance and beauty of sharing meals with the family and others, enhances the seasonality and territoriality of products in correlation with environmental sustainability.

A natural medicineBut let's get to the preventive aspect. According to a study published in the British Medical Journal, conducted in 2005 on the elderly population (over 60) of nine European countries, a greater adherence to the Mediterranean model allows a statistically reducing the risk of overall mortality by 8%. Not only that: the "Lyon Diet Heart Study" has shown that this type of diet has a primary role also in the secondary prevention of coronary diseases, reducing the recurrence rate from 30% to 70%.

The real secret of the Mediterranean dietWhere's the magic? There is no trick: the winning card lies in varying our meal choices often giving more attention to each meal to whole grains, fruit and vegetables, dried fruit and extra virgin olive oil, from which we get a good amount of fiber and polyunsaturated fatty acids that promote prevention.

The most complete modelUnlike the others model however, for example the vegetarian and vegan model, it is also suggested a daily consumption of dairy products, two or three times a week of fish and a medium-low use of meat, especially the red one should not exceed twice a week. This allows us to take proteins and iron in a more easily digestible form than the one present in vegetables and in a more completely way the B vitamins, including B12 which in the vegan diet must instead be supplied through supplements.

However, each model has its own strengths and weaknesses, but if we want to follow a complete diet, surely the Mediterranean model is what allows us to vary our foods on the table in the best way and helps us not to forget all those aspects secondary that contribute to crowning our meal. Eating better is possible!

The latest trend in the fitness world is called Budokon, a Japanese word meaning "the spiritual path of the warrior" . This discipl ine, which incorporates martial arts, yoga and meditation, was conceived in 2000 by Cameron Shayne, an internationally renowned martial arts master who is v e r y p o p u l a r a m o n g o v e r s e a s celebrities. The Budokon is not only a sport but also a philosophy of life that blends the richness of spirituality with the science of bio mechanics. Let's d iscover a l l the secrets of the Budokon.

Budokon: balance of body and mindDefining it as a sport is an understatement. In fact, in addition to training the body, the Budokon stimulates the mind and improves self-esteem. The Budokon practitioner burns fat and with the sweat, sweeps away the tensions accumulated during the day. It can also be a tool to be use to correct posture, tone muscles and make body movements more fluid and faster. A lesson usually lasts 75 minutes and is practiced barefoot with clothing suitable for making large and dynamic movements.

First part: YogaIt starts with very gentle movements and breathing exercises (breathing control is essential throughout the lesson) and then moves on to yoga. The yoga techniques used are the Iyangar, which works on alignment to achieve physical (and also emotional) stability, and Ashtanga, more dynamic and choreographic, which consists of a series of positions executed following a sort of flow, as if it was a dance. This phase serves to loosen joints and muscles, which are often contracted and limit the limb mobility.

The Budokon is not only a sport but also a philosophy of life

ZOOM: who is Shayne Aaron CameronBorn October 17, 1977, he is a professional New Zealand boxer. He is a former Commonwealth Cruiserweight champion, having also won several regional heavyweight titles. As an amateur he won a bronze medal in the heavyweight division at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. A curiosity: it was ranked fifth in the 2015 series With Dancing With the Stars in New Zealand.

Second part: Martial artsThen we move on to Budo, which is a combination of fighting techniques derived from Tae Kwon Do, Jui-jutsu and karate. The fight is simulated: kicks and punches are dumped into the void, against an imaginary opponent, or against padded shapes. This part helps to tone the muscles of legs, gluteus and abdomen, without weighing them down, but making them stronger, with positive effects also on the waist.

Third part: MeditationThe final part of the lesson is aimed at relaxing the body through Zen meditation. Practitioners sit on the floor, with their legs crossed, and focus their attention on correct posture and breathing, in order to develop awareness of themselves and the space around them.If you were looking for an activity to burn fat, shape your body and relax your mind, then you have found the sport for you!

Once there were the "normal shoes" and the "sneakers shoes". Today in practice every sport has its own shoe. Whatever sport is practiced, it is good to choose the right equipment, starting right from the sneakers, which promote performance and help keep the body in balance. In this article you will find some useful advice for a first orientation. But remember: in sport, commitment, talent, training are everything. But even starting "on the right foot", rather, "with the right shoe" can make the difference!

The main features of sneakers shoesWhen choosing sports shoes, the following elements must be taken into consideration:- type of training;- body weight;- type of land on which you are training;- individual plantar support (can be obtained with the

baropodometric examination);- sports discipline that you want to practice;- posture.

A shoe for every sportFor every sport there is a suitable shoe, just think of the football shoes with metal studs, the high basketball shoes to prevent ankle sprains or super light racing ones. Before proceeding with the purchase we must not first think about the discipline and then the aesthetic aspect.

Fitness shoesGym goers have to bet on models that allow them to move easily and perspire sweat. Furthermore, fitness shoes are equipped with two-part soles and shock absorber designed to cushion shocks caused by jumps and movements.

Tennis, volleyball and soccer shoesIf you intend to practice the above sports disciplines, you must make sure that they have the respective requirements:- tennis shoes: in this case we must consider the type of soil

on which we will play, such as red earth, cement or grass. But also the weight and the muscular power: shoes with high "cushioning" favor explosiveness and give more thrust. The shoes for the red earth must have the herringbone sole to avoid quickly sand residues. If you play on concrete, good shock absorbers are essential, while on the grass a smooth sole may be enough to prevent the grass from being damaged;

- volleyball shoes: they must be light, cushion the blows as much as possible and guarantee excellent grip on the ground;

- soccer shoes: since they are usually played on the grass, they must be fitted with metal studs on the sole and be light to guarantee accurate shots.

Why choosing the right training shoesChoosing the most suitable training shoes for your discipline is very important, as it helps to prevent injuries. To ensure that this purpose is maintained, it is advisable to replace them often and to devote the right maintenance to them, perhaps asking for advice from an expert and keeping yourself informed at a trusted sports shop.

The benefits of

dancingfor the elderly

milc news Stay young

It is well known that moving always good, but for the elderly it is worth double. The dance for the elderly is a physical activity capable of offering numerous benefits to all those who practice it, but what are they? Let's find out together.

Fun and socializationElderly people who practice dance consistently have the opportunity to have fun and socialize with other people. Indeed, dancing becomes a pretext for meeting and socializing, thanks to which boredom and loneliness can be driven out.We must also not neglect the psychological benefits, first and foremost the acquisition of greater self-confidence, as it demonstrates how tangible results can be obtained on the physical and on the psyche.

Physical benefitsElderly people who practice dancing can enjoy numerous physical benefits, including:Ÿ b e t t e r m o t o r c o o r d i n a t i o n . T h e e x e c u t i o n o f

choreographies encourages to train body and mind, also helping to prevent all degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's;

Ÿ excellent muscle control. Taking steps and choreography involves controlling the muscles, keeping them well trained in this way. A good muscle tone avoids falls, loss of balance and domestic accidents;

Ÿ elastic joints. Thanks to the elastic joints it is possible to obtain more autonomy and freedom of movement, essential elements for not losing one's self-sufficiency during the third age;

Ÿ reinforced bones. Properly trained joints and muscles help protect bone health, thus preventing osteoporosis and catalyzing their healing in the event of breakage;

Ÿ oxygenated blood.

At the beginning of 2019, over 65's in Italy were 13.8 million (about 23% of the Italian

population).

Incentive to follow a healthy dietThe desire to be always performing on the dance floor encourages following a healthy diet and defeating food addictions, which will instead be considered a means to create conviviality with fellow dancers, just think of aperitifs or restaurant dinners.

The dances recommended for the elderlyDid reading the previous paragraphs make you want to start dancing? Very well, now all that remains is to choose the type of dance that is most suitable for those over 65. First of all we must rely on the guidance of expert teachers, who will be able to indicate the best movements and steps to take. To get tangible results, the ideal frequency is twice a week. In order to socialize as much as possible, it is advisable to choose a couple dance (waltz, ballroom dance, tango).

Dancing improves coordination, muscle tone, elasticity, bone strength, blood oxygenation.

The recommended

vaccinationsfor the elderly

milc news Stay young

Over the years the immune system weakens, leading to a delayed response and less than external attacks. Moreover, the third age is that in which most of the chronic diseases arise (hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, chronic respiratory diseases) and some infections can aggravate these conditions. This explains why the target of election of the vaccination campaigns is represented by the over 65 yrs, who are the ones who risk the most. Here are the recommended vaccinations for the elderly.

Page 17: Know more, live better News n5_November.pdfnews n.05 November 2019 Know more, live better Monthly multi-thematic magazine edited by Fondazione Milc on psychophysical well-being, for

Influenza vaccineInfluenza can cause greater severity and a higher risk of complications in elderly subjects with a pre-existing chronic disease. For this reason, experts advise people over 65 yrs to undergo flu vaccination every season, between October and December, to prevent complications, hospitalizations and deaths.

Pneumococcal vaccinationAnother vaccination recommended starting at 65 years of age is the pneumococcal vaccination, which defends the organism from Streptococcus pneumoniae, a bacterium that can cause serious diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis. Two types of vaccine are available: 13-valent (PVC13) and polysaccharide 23-valent, which are administered two months apart from each other only once in life.

17milc news Stay young

Herpes Zoster vaccinationFor people over the age of 65 the calendars drawn up by the Ministry advise you to undergo herpes zoster vaccination, responsible for the Saint Anthony Fire, which increasingly affects the elderly with extremely debilitating consequences. It is an infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella virus that causes a painful eruption and sometimes chronic neuropathic pain that can lead to loss of self-sufficiency. The only way to prevent herpes zoster is the vaccine, but it may not be as effective in immuno-depressed individuals.

Anti-difto-tetanus-pertussis vaccine (dTpa)Strongly recommended for over 65s, the difto-tetanus-pertussis vaccine provides effective protection against three different diseases: diphtheria, a respiratory disease with formation of membranes in the throat that can lead to asphyxia; tetanus, infection caused by a bacterium that enters the human body through a wound and causes muscle spasms; pertussis, highly contagious respiratory infectious disease characterized by whooping cough. The vaccine does not protect in the long term, so regular recalls are required every 10 years.

ZOOM: vaccine yes, but with reserveThe survey commissioned by the Health Directorate of the European Commission and published last April tells us that 85% of Italians consider effective the vaccines, only 9% consider them ineffective and the majority of people (61%) have been vaccinated on advice of the doctor. However, if 71% of Italians think they are sufficiently tested (only 18% think they are poorly tested), it is also true that 34% of Italians interviewed believe that vaccines can cause the disease they should prevent, while 32% thinks they are weakening the immune system.(Source: Eurobarometer 2019)

19milc news Psychology

Muscular tensions and psychological tensions: what are they?Muscular tensions are difficulties in movement. They are characterized by a rigid and not elastic muscle. They are due to stress and nerves and can be traced to psychological tensions: they are the reflection of our inner self.

How to recognize them? That is not always easy. It is in fact a gradual process and is perceived by individuals who suffer from it only when it reaches the most acute and unbearable stage. The pain is so strong that you usually can't even move. The greatest muscle tension you can have is the one at the cervical and the one at the upper limbs. This will certainly not allow you to sit correctly and will also cause you pain during your sleep. For the upper and lower limbs instead it is possible that the hands and the legs become stiff in an anomalous way. Curious is also how the tension of the jaw leads to a grinding teeth in a crazy way.

Why do they arise? The onset of muscular tension is connected to social and relational problems that involve stressful and not very calm situations. Most often they appear after a stressful period of work, after a particularly stressful meeting, coming out of situations of extreme hardship or embarrassment. They are in fact the way our body uses to respond clearly to the nervous and to discharge it all together. They are also related to a mental fatigue that is most often chronic. We also say that our mind, at times, is so tired that it lets itself go.

Practical advicePractical advice can be of various kinds depending on personal needs. In general, you can choose to attend a sport or group activity to relieve stress and ease these tensions. Sports such as running or boxing for men are recommended. A second advice is to attend stressful situations as little as possible and to dedicate oneself to the care of one's inner self as soon as possible, perhaps taking advantage of free time to dedicate oneself to what one likes more. Finally we have more than valuable advice: to best address a stressful situation it is good to talk about it with a specialist in the field. The psychologist is a great help. In severe cases, physiotherapy and rehabilitation are recommended to loosen the muscles and allow the body to resume its optimal functioning.

Journey through anger:origin, perception,

control.by Giuseppe Iannone

This second appointment with the world of anger continues in an attempt to investigate why we get angry, trying to understand how we can channel it. We have so far said that anger generally arises from unfulfilled expectations, from a standard from which situations, unexpected facts, deviate, generating anger in us. The Christian perspective explains that good people get angry when they think that instead of a reward, they have been given an unjust punishment.

Page 21: Know more, live better News n5_November.pdfnews n.05 November 2019 Know more, live better Monthly multi-thematic magazine edited by Fondazione Milc on psychophysical well-being, for

21milc news Psychology

Teased by fate? Then there are people who get angry because they feel they are made fun of by events and even by inanimate objects. For example, if our train is late, if the pen falls from our desk, if a drawer of the bedside table does not open, the frustration can turn into explosive rage if we believe that the pen has fallen or the drawer has not opened for to spite us. In these cases, taking a more dialectical attitude can help us better manage anger: it is one thing to tell us: "that guy cut my way in the car to annoy me" and another is to say: "that guy cut my way in the car and now I'm annoyed". I tell an anecdote about it: in the spring of 539 BC, Cyrus, the king of Persia, had declared war on the Assyrians. Cyrus had ordered his troops to march to Babylon (the capital of Assyria). The march was going well until the troops reached the banks of the Gyndes river and had to stop because of the dangerousness of the waters. The generals advised Cyrus to stall for as long as the flow of the river had decreased as the current so strong could decimate the troops. But Cyrus did not want to listen to his advisers and ordered the troops to cross the river anyway. It so happened that Cyrus' horse just slipped into the water and was carried away by the current. The king was furious. How had the river dared to swallow his horse among its waves? He decided to punish the Gyndes river for his insolence. Setting aside his war plan, he ordered his men to start digging dozens and dozens of canals to drain the river's water and reduce its flow so that "Even a woman in the future could have crossed the river without the water wet her knees ". The challenge lasted a whole summer and in the end the river was divided into 360 channels. His anger exhausted and his revenge completed, Cyrus ordered the exhausted troops to resume their march to Babylon.

Positive effects of angerBut it might be a blessing in disguise. A proverb that fits in the case of anger, since this can also be a way to improve mood, for example when you feel sad or anxious.

Giuseppe Iannone [www.giuseppeiannone.it]

Psychologist and Neuro-psychologist, works, among others, at the Centro SaluteIN in Milan (www.saluteinmilano.it). He is also a certified instructor of breathing techniques, relaxation, autogenous training, Russian massage and self-defense (www.systemamilano.it).

Anger can also be a way to improve mood, for example when you feel sad or anxious

So at the base of anger is there always a reasoning error? Seneca has described what we today would call the cognitive conception of emotions, according to which there are beliefs at the base of emotions and once the incorrect beliefs are corrected emotion (in our case anger) would no longer have any reason to manifest itself. But we know well that things are not the case. In fact, how do we explain that some people, even knowing rationally that there is no reason to get angry if you find yourself, for example, stuck in traffic, get angry every time? To get out of this apparent aporia we must look at the structure of emotions and imagine it as composed of multiple layers. If there is a layer that we could call "cognitive" or "rational" emotions there is a second layer that I would call "intentional". Let me explain better: to whom would it occur to say that falling in love is manifested through pure rational reasoning? It is clear that when we are struck by someone attractive we are pure emotion: in this sense the emotions are nothing more than the way through which a possibility becomes evident to us. The same thing happens with anger. As an emotion, anger is a way of relating to the world, actually it is a way of feeling respect for oneself, for others and for the world (world understood as one's own possibilities). In the case of anger I feel indignant and others (people / objects / events) are an obstacle to my world (to my possibilities). Example: bottled up in traffic, I find myself angry (feeling respectful of myself) because the other cars (feeling respect to the others) will make me arrive late at the station and lose the train (my world). In this sense, the emotion of anger is nothing more than a relationship between us and the world and can be seen as a way to regulate our relationship with the world (especially competition relationships). Heidegger speaks of emotional tonalities that do not arise from our psyche but from our being in a world and constitute in this sense a way of being in the world.

Since ancient times man has resorted to thermal waters to treat the most varied body disorders. The ancient Romans had already discovered the beneficial properties of sulfurous water as early as the fifth century B.C.: they had understood that this type of water could attenuate muscular tension and joint pain (for example the Caracalla Baths).

According to the first philosopher of history, Talete, water represented the generating element of the entire cosmos, the so-called "Archè". Thermal waters arrive from the subsoil and flow at least at 20 degrees: the higher the temperature, the more the quantity of minerals grows.

Neurocosmetics:the new frontiers of beauty and wellness

milc news Trends

Being beautiful would already be an achievement in itself. Be beautiful and happy? Maybe in the movies. However, recently neurocosmetics is spreading like wildfire, as well as a branch of skin biology based on the link between the nervous system and the skin, thanks to which it is possible to derive various benefits, first of all the improvement of mood.

Page 25: Know more, live better News n5_November.pdfnews n.05 November 2019 Know more, live better Monthly multi-thematic magazine edited by Fondazione Milc on psychophysical well-being, for

How neurocosmetics worksNeurocosmetics takes into consideration the fact that the skin is a vital organ in all respects, capable of transmitting to the brain every stimulus and perceived sensation. It must be borne in mind that the skin is the first organ that is formed during gestation, followed by all the others. Based on this reality, it is possible to support the production of dopamine and serotonin, that is the number one friendly substances of good humor. This new frontier of beauty can therefore be used to drive away migraines, fatigue and stress, which, in the long run, can be the cause of psychosomatic pathologies such as psoriasis and dermatitis.

The most used active ingredientsIn neurocosmetics plant products are mostly used, just think of the blue poppy or essential oil of pink pepper, which are also able to reduce expression lines and thus make the face appear younger.Another widely used substance is acetylsapeptide 8, as it is appreciated for its great anti-aging properties; it is not rare to find it on the list of ingredients for numerous eye contour and anti-wrinkle creams.

Difference between neurocosmetics and aromatherapyThe difference between aromatherapy and neurocosmetics is really minimal, since both are closely related to each other: when the sense of smell perceives an odor, a reaction is triggered that can awaken certain memories and induce a response. The latter is positive if the person undergoing the treatment considers it pleasant, thus bringing it to a positive emotional state.

To whom is neurocosmesis indicatedNeurocosmetics is indicated for everyone, including children, since it is a biological and safe treatment. Currently, however, it is more in demand by all those who wish to prevent and combat aging: thanks to the substances used, they can in fact immediately benefit from highly moisturizing and protective actions, which immediately make the face appear relaxed. But research has certainly not stopped here, because it is analyzing other beneficial active ingredients capable of acting together with lights and colors to slow down glycation, or premature aging.the skin is capable of transmitting to

the brain any stimulus and perceived sensation

Homemade, natural and personalized

shaving cream

milc news Trends

Our skin comes into daily contact with hundreds of chemicals, some of which are not very friendly to the skin (to put it mildly). Even many shaving creams on the market contain different chemicals that are harmful to health: for this reason it would be enough to take a few minutes to prepare a “home made” shaving foam. With a few simple steps it is in fact possible to obtain a 100% natural lotion rich in skin-friendly substances.

In shaving foams we find in the supermarket, we often find industrial chemicals, which, like SLES, can contain dioxane, a carcinogenic factor.

CURIOSITY: origins of shavingThe first to shave seem to have been the ancient Egyptians, already 3,400 years before the birth of Christ. Subsequently the technique of shaving was perfected during the Greek period: it is said that the first barber arrived as far as Rome from Sicily around 300 BC. C .. The most widespread blade model at that time was called Navicula and was up to 11 centimeters long.

Home made shaving cream: recipe number one Ingredients:Ÿ two thirds of a cup of coconut oil;Ÿ two-thirds cup of Shea butter;Ÿ a quarter cup of olive oil or grape seed;Ÿ ten or twenty drops of essential oil (aroma to taste).

Directions1. Dissolve coconut oil and Shea butter on a low flame until

liquefied (to avoid varying the consistency it is important not to bring these substances to a boil).

2. At this point add the olive or grape oil with the drops of essential oil, mix and let it set in the refrigerator (it will take a few minutes).

3. Remove the mixture from the fridge, soften it and knead it for three to four minutes with an electric mixer.

Here, now the homemade shaving cream is ready for use. The only negative aspect of Shea butter is that the oily consistency could create some problems with the drain pipes.

ZOOM: the data on the "production" of snailsFrom the table to cosmetics, the consumption of snails by Italians, has increased by 325% in the last 20 years. Every year about 44 thousand tons are consumed, between living and preserved.

The healing effect of snail slime The snail slime is not a modern remedy, rather it was widely used in ancient Greece as a remedy for derma inflammation. The researchers analyzed the snail slime and showed that it contains several active ingredients of vital importance for the skin, in fact it is rich in collagen, elastin, vitamin E and A. The vitamins and active ingredients indicated above make the snail slime perfect to heal small wounds and especially to reduce the marks left by acne or small lesions.

Protective action against atmospheric agents Another benefit of snail slime is due to the presence in its composition of muco-polysaccharides, components that create the classic viscous and gelatinous appearance in contact with water. The action of muco-polysaccharides is essential to create a protective barrier on the dermis, in this way the effects caused by smog, atmospheric agents and bacterial attacks are significantly reduced. The high viscosity also facilitate a better absorption of the creams, this is why the snail-based cosmetics are easily applied and their effect lasts for several hours.

THE ADVICE: Can I use the snails from the garden? It is good to remember that snails used in beauty centers or cosmetic products have been specially bred and purified, so it is not a good idea to test a "do it yourself" treatment with garden snails!

In the snail slime there is a percentage of water that varies between 91% and 98%

The collagen present in the snail slime stretches the skin and fills the typical signs of age

Improves skin elasticity Another advantage of using snail slime products is the improvement of elasticity and muscle tone in the skin of both the face and the body. As we have pointed out, snail slime is rich in elastin and collagen, two substances naturally produced by the body that have the specific function of improving skin elasticity and tone. By applying cosmetics snail slime based, the elasticity is increased and stretch marks and other skin blemishes are reduced.

Anti-aging actionSnail slime creams and treatments are also able to slow down the signs of aging, performing a filling and elasticizing function. The collagen present in this completely natural substance relaxes the skin and fills the typical signs of age. In addition to the aforementioned benefits of snail slime, it should be noted that it also has a soothing and moisturizing action. Aren't you curious to use it?

The electric toothbrush: suitable for children and adultThe electric toothbrush is still a device little used by Italian families; indeed it is considered a niche product too expensive and not easy to use. First of all, it is necessary to dispel the myth that the electric toothbrush costs too much, given that in recent years there are very affordable models that also offer interchangeable heads to guarantee you several months of use. Secondly, the electric toothbrush is very easy to use, even by children, just press the power button and pass it on the teeth with a little pressure, the device thinks about the rest. For the little ones, colorful electric toothbrushes with heads suitable for the size of their teeth are on sale, so they become an excellent ally for your children's oral hygiene.

The electric toothbrush, dentists recommend it!It will certainly have happened to you to undergo a dental examination and to hear you say: "Why don't you use an electric toothbrush? It could improve your oral health and prevent tooth decay! ". If your dentist has also addressed you with this phrase, the main reason is because the electric toothbrushes clean the teeth and the mouth in depth and evenly, compared to the classic toothbrush. The electric toothbrush cleaning system is characterized by the presence of a rotating head that oscillates with a frequency between

THE ADVICE: fix frequent appointments with the dentist A correct oral hygiene also passes from a periodic check of plaque and tartar, which are very difficult to eradicate from our mouth, even with an electric toothbrush (which must be used together with dental floss and mouthwash). A tartar treatment is recommended (the so-called "tooth cleaning") every 6 months, or every 12 months.

The rotating head performs between 5,000 and 30,000 oscillations

per minute on each individual tooth

HOW MANY TEETH DO WE HAVE IN OUR MOUTH?An adult man has about 32 teeth in total. Dentists recommend brushing for 5 seconds for each dental "facade" (front, top, inside), which means we should always spend at least 2 and a half minutes brushing our teeth.

5,000 and 30,000 steps per minute on each individual tooth, thus removing any food residue and also eliminating the plaque between teeth. If instead we think of the classic toothbrush, we can well understand what the substantial difference is and why this electronic device is the recommended choice for all dentists.

Rotating heads for every needCompared to classic toothbrushes, there are actually hundreds of electric ones, which differ in terms of head, oscillation frequency and functionality. Among the main models of electric toothbrushes it is necessary to point out, those with an anti-stain head to remove the unsightly stains on the surface of the teeth or those specific for people having retainer, soft and not very invasive. In conclusion, the electric toothbrush is really the perfect solution for those who want to improve the well-being of the mouth and even if it costs a little more, the initial investment is definitely worth the result!

Postures and tips for office pains Interview with Matthieu Bresciani

This is a topic with the highest number of medical interconnections. Back Pain? It could depend on how we use the mouse at work. Obviously also from how we sleep, but perhaps also from how we chew; and how not to mention the cases of somatization due to work stress? Meanwhile, advanced economies are becoming increasingly service economies and the number of people working on the PC is always higher. That's why we want to ask Dr. Bresciani what he thinks about office pains.

What are the jobs or the employment most 1exposed to the risk of muscle or joint diseases? Paradoxically the sedentary jobs, I see many

employees and very few bricklayers (laughs..)

Is it more risky to spend several hours in front of 2the PC (the so-called videoterminalists) or have physical and executive tasks, even arduous ones,

which involve loading-unloading and continuous movement? The risk for those who carry out more physical work may also be of traumatic origin but generally problems on a postural basis occur more in sedentary workersi

What are the most recurrent diseases during your 3daily medical activity? More than pathology it is right to speak of imbalance and somatic dysfunctions to

which the pathology can be associated such as arthrosis, tendinitis, tendinosis, etc... Answering your question I would say somatic dysfunctions of the spine.

Who works all the time at the PC, what could 4encounter? What would you recommend to these workers? In the clinic every day I see person even

young people who complain of cervical, dorsal, lumbar pain but also of the upper limb, often due to the use of the mouse, surely the advice is to correct if possible their position during the activity; frequently speaking with the patient, incorrect attitudes and postures can be easily corrected, a correct postural hygiene in fact prevents functional overloads. The recommendation then once treated and completely re-balanced the patient is to carry out specific exercises that are taught to the patient and sometimes an appropriate sporting activity.

Have you noticed a trend over the years, a specific 5trend, a positive or negative trend? There are problems that follow a trend. The most concrete

example is linked to the over-use of smartphones, which, as can easily be imagined, complicates the life of our cervical body and beyond.

Page 33: Know more, live better News n5_November.pdfnews n.05 November 2019 Know more, live better Monthly multi-thematic magazine edited by Fondazione Milc on psychophysical well-being, for

Are there any posture exercises that can be 6recommended to everyone? We start from the assumption that the movement is the "obsession" of

the osteopath, giving movement or sometimes even a micro-movement to the dysfunctional structures so "trapped" is the purpose of the treatment, for this reason it is very important to identify specific exercises specific for the patient once treated. However, there are non-specific and global exercise programs that in a healthy subject can help prevent postural problems.

33milc news Ask the expert

Do you notice a correlation between emotional 8stress and muscle-skeletal resentments? The psycho-emotional situation is always to be evaluated in

the patient precisely because it can play a fundamental role or even a real starter of the domino that generates skeletal muscle pain. In this regard, there are several approaches, including manipulative ones, which block this domino in the bud by acting, for example, on the diaphragm.

And specific exercises for those who work in the 7PC? There are specific exercises for a specific situation, but there are several non-specific exercises that are

valid for those are using the PC a lot.

Chewing and posture: how much are they related? 9There is a correlation above all on the posture of the cervical dorsal tract in my opinion, but I know that some

colleagues attribute further correlations to chewing.

The correct computer posture

1. Desk  While sitting, keep your torso upright and your elbows 90 °: the desk must be at your elbows.

2. Support on the feet. When working on the computer the feet must be placed on the ground.

3. Erect bust. The thighs must be parallel to the ground so as not to have areas of excessive compression on the seat. And the angle formed between the torso and the thighs must be 90°.

4. Lumbar curve. The back must be completely in contact with the seat back, even the shoulders. And in the lumbar part there must be a soft thickness of a few centimeters to recreate the physiological curve.

 5. Horizontal look. Use books or sheets of paper to lift the monitor so you have your eyes on the horizon.

From 2016 to 2019, the enterprises that have activated corporate welfare plans rose from 7.2% to 19.6%. But that isn’t to say our production process doesn’t have room for improvement. Four years later, the majority of SMEs (54%) have little awareness of the advantages of corporate welfare. However, there is good news: the companies that have defined initiatives in at least 4 areas, in 2016 were 25.5%; in just three years they doubled to 45.9%. Even more significant is the growth of highly active companies, that is with initiatives in at least six areas: they have almost tripled, going from 7.2% in 2016 to 19.6% in 2019.

Acupuncture

milc news Pocket Medical Encyclopedia

We often hear the expression "alternative medicine" repeated, failing to frame what it is. Acupuncture is a type of care that fits into this set of alternative treatments. It is a treatment method which consists of inserting needles into specific points on the surface of the human body to restore the patient's original state of health. Although it seems to work to alleviate various forms of pain, the principles of acupuncture are based on scientific foundations that are still entirely worth trying.

Page 37: Know more, live better News n5_November.pdfnews n.05 November 2019 Know more, live better Monthly multi-thematic magazine edited by Fondazione Milc on psychophysical well-being, for

37milc news Pocket Medical Encyclopedia

What acupuncture consists ofThis ancient therapeutic practice is based on the theory of meridians, invisible lines on the surface of the human body within which Ki vital energy flows. Along these energy channels there are many points that reveal the state of the organs: if at certain points the circulation of Ki is blocked, disturbances appear, such as low back pain, migraine, cervical, etc. The insertion of the needles in those specific points allows to clear the obstructed meridians, restoring the Ki flow and the balance of the organism. A session usually lasts for half an hour, except if it is the first visit which, including the history, is longer.

Acupuncture originsAcupuncture is a branch of traditional Chinese medicine. Its origins are very remote: just think that the first written testimony is found in the Canon of internal medicine of the emperor Huang-Di, dating back to 300 BC. It is believed that the acupuncture points were discovered by chance starting from the finding that small traumas at certain points were able to solve some disturbances not otherwise treatable. In the West, the fame of acupuncture reached its peak in 1971, when the journalist James Reston was urgently operated in China for appendicitis. To control post-operative pain this practice was executed which he did not know.

There are many acupuncture points, maybe even 2,000.

EffectivenessThe technique of acupuncture, which is learned in schools reserved for doctors, is usually applied for mild, widespread diseases. It seems to work to relieve various forms of pain (headaches, painful menstrual cycles, neuralgia, herpes zoster), as well as to soothe menopausal disorders. It also works well for psychosomatic disorders, such as anxiety, depression and insomnia. While acknowledging some benefits of the practice, Western medicine does not share the explanation of the functioning of acupuncture provided by Chinese medicine. According to the National Council Against Health Fraud (NCAHF) the therapeutic effects of acupuncture would be mostly in the minds of patients (the so-called "placebo effect").In conclusion, the use of acupuncture can be useful for treating a series of widespread diseases that limit the quality of life, and even if scientifically still not proven, acupuncture could also work on you. What to say, trying costs nothing.

THE QUESTION: real effectiveness? The National Center for Biotechnology Information archive (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed)contains more than 25,000 articles in which the term "acupuncture" appears. Is it proof that acupuncture is really effective? Not really, given that many articles appear in magazines of dubious reliability or minor.
