Letter from the Principal As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to share my annual letter relevant to pranks and acts of vandalism. As a school community, we value our facility and appreciate the learning environment it provides our students. Therefore, we want to be sure that everyone understands that students identified as trespassing on school grounds before or after the school day and identified as engaging in a prank or destroying school property will be reported to the local police, which could result in arrests and fines. If seniors are involved in these situations, they will not be allowed to participate in graduation activities, and a letter will be attached to the student’s final transcript informing post-secondary schools of the infraction. Some schools have charged students as felons for committing acts of vandalism. Additionally, any student who is not a senior and is caught “tagging” or defacing any area of the school will be referred to the disciplinary tribunal for a hearing. The school will recommend that the student be removed from Grady and assigned to an alternative school. Also, the school will ask for restitution for incurred damages, including the cost of having graffiti removed and the cost of repairs to the building (e.g., soaking, sandblasting, pressure washing and/or re- painting of the area plus the cost of materials, including labor). The fine could be exorbitant. It is our hope that none of our students will trespass on school grounds before or after school hours or engage in any prank. It is important that you, our parents, are clearly aware of our position on this matter. There will be no deals worked out to dismiss this sort of behavior. Parents, we ask that you discuss this issue with your children to ensure that they thoroughly understand the serious consequences that will be imposed. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support with respect to this matter. Finally, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to the PTSA for the support given this school year: a phenomenally well-maintained Grady website, a well-managed College and Career Center, the GradyGram updates and Knight Lights publications, assistance provided during testing, chaperones for field trips, and all of the support you have provided to us this challenging school year. Letter from the Principal

As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to share my annual letter relevant to pranks and acts of vandalism.

Also, the school will ask for restitution for incurred damages, including the cost of having graffiti removed and the cost of repairs to the building (e.g., soaking, sandblasting, pressure washing and/or re-painting of the area plus the cost of materials, including labor).

On behalf of grateful faculty and staff, we are most appreciative!

Grady High School Academy Updates

Biomedical Science & Engineering Academy Mark your calendar for May 19, 2014, for the BS&E Honors Program. The program will start at 9:50 a.m. and end at 10:50 a.m. As many of you know, this is our opportunity to celebrate the academic achievements of our students, as well as their achievements beyond the classroom.

Our engineering students took 1st, 2nd and 3rd place at the APS Technology Fair held at Atlanta Technical College. Winning categories included game design, animated graphics, multimedia, project programming and mobile apps.

Thirty of our biomedical science students traveled to Athens to compete for HOSA, and we are proud to report that 20 of them will go on to compete at the national level. This is quite an accomplishment, as we have tripled the number of students advancing to nationals from last year.

The dedication, hard work and passion from our engineering and biomedical science teachers make all the difference. I am personally grateful for their service and proud to work in concert with their efforts. As we quickly approach the end of another great year, we want to express our sincere thanks to our parents for your support and entrusting us with your students. Together, we have nurtured their success and embraced our challenges. Until the next school year, let’s continue our great work.

Raymond L. Dawson, Academy Leader: [email protected]

Business & Entrepreneurship AcademyThe Business & Entrepreneurship Academy congratulates Nyla Woods, an exemplary senior, for signing a full track scholarship to St. John’s University on National Signing Day 2014! We would also like to congratulate our B&E students who organized and implemented Market Day 2014. This endeavor allows students to advertise and sell their culinary creations. They must consider all facets of their projects, including managing inventory, considering the mindsets of a target audience and effective cost analysis. Market Day is supported by Costco, and the students are able to keep or reinvest their profits. Finally, the B&E Honors program will be held Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at 9:45 a.m. in the theater.

Willie Vincent, Academy Leader: [email protected]

Communications & Journalism AcademyOn March 5, 2014, the Communications & Journalism Academy celebrated student achievements in an awards day program. Ninth through twelfth grade students received recognition for outstanding performance in their theme-based pathways and semester grade point averages from the fall semester of 2013, and for perfect attendance this school year. We recognized the accomplishments of 317 students. Congratulations to all!

Students on the staff of Grady publications recently won several awards. The Southerner is a 2014 Online Pacemaker Finalist, one of 28 chosen from 148 entries and the only paper from Georgia. Additionally, the staffs of The Southerner and Nexus won 20 digital media awards in the 2014 Columbia Scholastic Press Association Scholastic Gold Circle competition. First place awards went to Margo Stockdale (news feature), Quinn Mulholland and Olivia Volkert (in-depth news/feature story), Keegan Hasson (single feature photograph) and Courtney Marshall (magazine website design). Second place awards included Ryan Switzer (breaking news story), Mary Claire Morris (news feature), Mallory McFarlin (first-person experience), typography Courtney Marshall and Madeline Viera (podcast). Third place went to Archie Kinnane and Josh Weinstock (news writing), Ben Simonds-Malamud (news feature) and Ryan Switzer (sports feature). Certificates of merit went to Sarah Smith (news writing), Jennifer Steckl (in-depth news/feature story), Madeline Veira (general or humor commentary), Chris Brown (sports commentary), Eli Mansbach (single feature photograph), J.D. Capelouto (photo illustration), Quinn Mulholland (interactive graphic) and the staff of The Southerner (newspaper website design).

C&J students visit various communication companies throughout the city where they have the opportunity to observe and speak with professionals in the field. On February 21st, juniors and seniors from Nexus and The Southerner sat in on the morning business meeting at the Atlanta Journal Constitution. C&J ninth grade students will attend field trips this spring to CNN and Cox Radio Atlanta where they will tour the television and radio studios, visit the control rooms and newsrooms, see how traffic reports are generated, watch recordings of teasers for the broadcasts, and meet various on-camera personalities. Many thanks to the PTSA for their generous support of the CNN trip.

Law & Leadership AcademyWith the state reorganization of the Career Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) law courses, The Law and Leadership Academy has revised its current law pathway and has added a new law pathway to its offerings. Both law pathways offer Introduction to the Law, Public Safety, and Corrections, and Security (9th). At the end of ninth grade, students will choose one of two law pathways: Application of the Law or Law Forensic Investigations. Students in the Application of the Law pathway will take Essentials of Legal Service (10th) and Applications of the Law (11th). The students in the Law Forensic Investigations pathway will take Criminal Justice Essentials (10th) and Forensic Science and Criminal Investigations (11th). Judge Bowden is the teacher and advisor for the Application of the Law pathway. Mrs. Barbour is the teacher and advisor for the Law Forensic Investigations pathway. Also, next year, seniors and juniors who have completed the Law Forensic Investigations pathway (which is the current Law pathway) can take Essentials of Legal Service or Application of the Law as electives.

The Moot Court team participated in its first competition on March 8, 2014 at the Georgia State University School of Law. The team worked diligently to master the art of legal argument in written briefs and oral argument. Participants from Grady included Monique Adams, Kaleb Edwards, Veronica Edwards, Jennifer Lyons, Caylin Newton, Gregory Partridge and Danielle Pines. Danielle Pines won the overall competition as well as the "Best Overall Oral Arguments" award. In addition, students will be participating in the Street Law Program in which corporate attorneys from AT&T will teach students contract and employment law. At the AT&T offices in Atlanta, students will apply their legal knowledge toward various situations. Finally, we are also partnering with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to create a Grady High School Criminal Justice Club.

5-7-0 Record at Regional TournamentGrady’s robotics team, G3 Robotics, FIRST Team 1648, recently competed at the Palmetto Regional FIRST Robotics Competition in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Members had a great learning experience at their second out-of-state regional tournament, the first of the spring season.

The competition is a three-day event attended by dozens of high school teams from all over the world, showcasing the robots they designed and built. G3 was selected for the third-seeded alliance, which included the Trail Blazers from Brazil, Team 1772, and the alliance leader, the Flying Platypi, Team 2655. This alliance competed well through the quarterfinals. G3 lost the first match, won the second, but lost the third, putting them out of the final elimination matches.

Senior Alex Loomis, vice-president of automation and electronics, noted that the team worked intensely, learned a lot and now knows what to improve on for its next event, the Peachtree Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, March 27–29 at the Georgia World Congress Center.
