Managing the issue of cycling on the pavement is ongoing. Hotspot areas seem to be Bridge Street, New St and Mill End being identified. Kenilworth’s SNT encourages residents who witness unsafe, aggressive or anti social cycling activity to report it to us. Remember that to effectively do anything about it we will need a time, date, location and description of offender and pedal cycle so we have the basic details required to undertake any investigation. The SNT have already dealt with one such cyclist.

Crime Update Kenilworth - December 2013
Burglars visit Kenilworth just before Christmas
Unfortunately, in the last few days further crimes have taken place in Kenilworth. These have largely been traditional burglaries. Doors and/or windows forced or smashed, properties entered and in some cases numerous items stolen. The late notification of the first two events is due to further problems with the police crime alert notification system.
Here are the details:
Please be aware of the following incidents, which have occurred at homes in your area over recent days: Incident 323 of 7 December
Before 7pm on 7 December, offenders entered a home in Rouncil Lane, Kenilworth through a rear door and stole many items.
Incident 122 of 8 December
At some point before 10am on 8 December, offenders forced open a window at the rear of a home in Clinton lane, Kenilworth and entered the premises to steal several items.
Incident 150 of 17 December
Between 11am and 2.10pm on 17 December, offenders smashed the rear patio doors at a home in Red Lane, Burton Green and entered the premises to steal several items.
Incident 319 of 16 December

Between 1 and 3.30pm on 17 December, offenders smashed the glass in the patio door of a home in Crackley Lane, Kenilworth and entered the house. Once inside, the offenders carried out a search of the house before making off with items of jewellery and electrical goods.
Please be vigilant and report anything you see that is suspicious immediately. Crown Watch would like to commend the actions of the off duty police officer, who through his actions whilst off duty successfully apprehended two offenders leading to their subsequent arrest.

Advice Update Kenilworth - December 2013
With Christmas and New Year just around the corner, you are probably in the process of buying presents and stocking up on supplies for the festive season. However, at this time of year rich pickings can be found. We want you to be able to relax and enjoy the festive season, so here are some useful tips to ensure that you don’t become a victim to an opportunist thief.
▪ Make sure gifts and valuables, wrapped and unwrapped, are out of view and not visible from any windows. This applies in the car as well as in the home.
▪ Photograph valuable property and log any serial numbers. Don’t store the information on a laptop, as that might be stolen too – keep it on a memory stick in a safe place.
▪ Don’t put gift packaging out for recycling or leave it sticking out of your bin – thieves will notice boxes for branded products like laptops, TVs or accessories that could indicate an expensive piece of kit somewhere in the house. The safest thing to do is to break down any cardboard boxes or fold them inside out so that you cannot see the branding. You can then store them out of sight inside your home until you can dispose of them at a local recycling site.
▪ Mark any expensive gifts you receive for Christmas with a UV pen or property marking service. This will make it harder for burglars to sell the items and allow police to return them to you. Call your local policing team on 101 for advice about property marking products. You can register your property with www.immobilise.com which is endorsed by a number of police forces.
▪ Lock all doors and windows, leave a light on and draw the curtains when you go out at night. Keep your doors and windows locked from the inside even when you are inside your home.
▪ Visible burglar alarms, exterior security lighting, timer lighting switches and leaving the radio on help to deter thieves and give the impression that somebody is at home.
▪ Bolt and padlock garden gates and make sure you don’t leave ladders out, or other things that burglars could easily use to climb on. Remember to lock your garden shed and store your tools inside; it stops burglars using your tools to break into your house. Consider fitting extra padlocks to gates, sheds and garages. Don’t keep presents in the garage or shed.
If you’re going away, we always recommend asking a trusted neighbour to pop in to your home every now and then to turn the lights on and off, draw the curtains, collect the mail and make the house look occupied. It goes without saying, make sure everything is properly locked up before you leave and the burglar alarm – if you have one – is set. We advise cancelling your newspapers, magazines and milk deliveries. We also recommend that you don't advertise the fact you are away from your home on Social Networking sites -‐ thieves use Social Media too! You don’t have to be a member of a Neighbourhood or Home Watch scheme to be a good neighbour, and even if you don’t have much contact with your neighbours, Christmas could be the perfect time to break the ice, have a friendly chat and get to know them a bit better. Burglars wander around looking for chances. The best opportunity for the police to catch them in the act is for you to spot them before they break in. Wherever you live, remain vigilant and if you see anything suspicious, call 999 immediately. Call 101 to contact police in a non-‐emergency situation.

2013 Reflections Kenilworth – December 2013

Beat Manager PC Pete King and PCSO Craig Ricardo
Reflections on 2013 by the Editor Fraser Pithie
It has been a bit of a rollercoaster of a year for Kenilworth in terms of crime and safety but overall our town has remained a very safe place to live and enjoy. Perhaps a measure of just how safe Kenilworth is can be gained from those in the community and how they see problems and raise them. Simply, things such as dog mess, use of the Greenway, cycling on pavements, parking problems. I am not saying that any of these are not issues, they clearly are to those that raise them. It’s safe to say though that if we were plagued with discarded needles, illegal squats, daily shoplifting and burglaries and street dealing of drugs the issues raised at the towns quarterly Community Forum’s would not be from the previous paragraph. Thankfully Kenilworth does not suffer or have to endure the misery of having areas that are saddled with such major issues
This year has shown that too often we, as a community, do not help ourselves. We reached a low point mid year when our SNT followed up with advice to owners of cars (residents) who had left valuables such as Sat Nav devices on show. In a couple of cases their proactive approach was not welcomed and they faced abuse. I don’t believe that is typical of the vast majority of people who live in our town who are, and remain, supportive of our police. We have had a share of burglaries this year, but albeit at very low levels. Serious Violent Crime has fallen again this year and that is to be welcomed and an active Community Speedwatch group continues to assist in pressing home safe driving behaviour. So it has been disappointing that in the last couple of months so many vehicles have been broken into with valuables taken. With over 50% of these vehicles either unlocked or with valuables on show it is little wonder the town became a magnet for those who commit this crime. This is an example of how our SNT cannot help us if we don’t help ourselves As 2014 approaches I hope we can all do more ourselves to think what we do, how we do it and to take some of that precious resource, time, to heed the advice of our police and help ourselves to avoid having a much greater amount of time taken up sorting out the problems and issues that arise once a criminal has taken your property. I am sure you join with me in thanking our SNT for all their hard work in 2013 and wishing them all the very best for 2014. A Happy New Year to you all.
