The Math Department would like to welcome students back and

wish them all the best during the 2016/17 school year!

SOCIAL STUDIES

The Social Studies Department would like to welcome all new and returning students for this

coming year.

The Department is very excited about the upcoming year full of many initiatives. Already on the

second day of school (September 8), our students toured a mobile “together” exhibit that was

housed in a large truck which parked itself on our school’s field. The museum was travelling

across the country promoting global development awareness in a fun and interactive manner. It

stopped at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and the University of Winnipeg. Kelvin

was the only school in Manitoba it visited!

Over the course of the year, the social studies teachers will continue to lead a number of field

trips. These opportunities will help to broaden the classroom experience by allowing students to

expand their learning in their own communities. Grade nine Social Studies classes will visit the

Provincial Legislature and grade twelve Law classes will sit through a trial at the Provincial Court

House. Many of the grade eleven Canadian History classes will participate in a historic walking

tour of downtown Winnipeg and Saint Boniface. We also plan to take our classes to the

Canadian Museum for Human Rights as well as the Manitoba Museum. As part of the Social

Studies Indigenous Issues Speakers’ Series, our students will also have the opportunity to listen

and to ask questions to several guest speakers who will discuss topical First Nations issues in our

city, province and country. For example, on September 30th (Orange Shirt Day), Lee Shingoose,

a residential school survivor, will speak to our students about her life experiences.

Lastly, the Department will be hosting teacher candidates from the University of Winnipeg and

Saint Boniface university this fall. The expectation for students who will be having a teacher

candidate in their room will be the same as it is for their regular teacher. Students are reminded

to keep up to date with their work and to continue to attend all their classes.

We are looking forward to another year with the students and parents at our great school!

FRENCH IMMERSION

All the grade 10 French Immersion students are going to Gaillardise à la Brise

on September 28th in LaBroquerie, Manitoba

Gaillardise à la Brise is the largest gathering of French-speaking youth in all of Manitoba and

Western Canada. The event gives the opportunity to high school students to live their

“francophonie” outside of a school context while creating new friendships with other students

who share their passion for French and their pride of being francophone.

Students will have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of workshops in the morning

and they will be entertained by top new bands in the afternoon.

It should be a spectacular day for all! Permission slips and fees are due September 21. Lunch is

included. The Bus departs from Kelvin at 9AM and returns between 4:30 and 4:45 PM.

Please contact Mme Chase at 204 474-1492 or at [email protected] if you have any questions.

FRENCH

FRENCH

Nous aimerions souhaiter à tous et à toutes une très bonne année scolaire!

The French Department would like to welcome Mme Lamoureux to our French Department.

Acceptable Practices for Work Done In Second Language with Internet Resources*

It is always acceptable to consult dictionaries and verb conjugation books such as the Bescherelle

which are accredited sources. In doing so, students must evaluate the options, with which they

are presented, and must then choose the correct word or phrase for their context.

A translation application such as Babelfish or the language tools on Google produce ready-made

answers which require no evaluation and no intellectual participation on the part of the student.

These sites do not aid student learning.

It is, in a way, asking “someone” to do the work for the student as if he or she had asked a

friend or a parent to do the assignment. The student is, therefore submitting work that is not his

or her own which is considered plagiarism. In addition, these tools only provide a literal word

for word translation which is often incorrect or illogical. Students who make use of these tools

are not displaying academic honesty.

* In consultation with Dr. Kenneth Meadwell of the University of Winnipeg

Check out our new French Department bulletin board!

Located on the upper level, across from the washrooms!

Club Français

An opportunity for students who want to enrich their vocabulary, to increase their fluency and

confidence with the French language.

Room 49 is open for you every Wednesday at lunchtime. BIENVENUE À TOUS!

Festival Théâtre Jeunesse

Auditions and rehearsals for the French Youth Theatre Festival will take place early

March. We are hoping to repeat Kelvin’s silver medal finish from 2016.

EDITING HOMEWORK

We would like to point out a couple of very useful websites for helping students edit their

work in French: http://bonpatron.com and reverse.net-dictionaries.

These sites allow students to put their work through a grammar and spell check in French.

The editor will point out the error and explain the grammatical concept related to it. The

wordreference.comlexilogos.com dictionary sites are also useful.

SCIENCE ZONE

Churchill Summary

This August, 4 Kelvin students, myself included, were chosen to go on the annual ten-day

research trip to Churchill, Manitoba, of 2016 with the International Student-led Arctic

Monitoring and Research Program (ISAMR). We were joined by students from Park School of

Baltimore, as well as a student from Vincent Massey and Junior-Rangers from Churchill.

Throughout our stay there, we hiked on the tundra to sites where we would collect our data

for the day, take pictures of the scenery or sit down for lunch. To

acquire the information we needed, we shared a few different tasks

within the group; measuring the depth of the active layer

(probing), identifying the species of vegetation on the surface layer

of the ground, and collecting soil samples to identify Ph levels. For

part of our visit in Churchill, we stayed at a lodge and research

centre twenty minutes from town (the Churchill Northern Research

Centre), but we also spent five nights at Nester One Field Camp in

Wapusk National Park. We had the amazing opportunity to ride in

a helicopter both there and back, as well as watch the Northern Lights, polar bears, hares,

caribou and arctic foxes from the field camp. To get an inside look

at the ups and downs of Churchill’s history, we listened to the Sayisi

Dene elder Caroline Yassie speak about her culture and spent a

night tenting in the Fort Prince of Wales. The goal of this annual

trip is to determine whether it is possible or not to calculate the

depth of the active layer by inspecting the vegetation, water and

soil that lies on the surface of the ground.

Discovery Days

On November 4th, Kelvin Students will be going to Discovery Days at the University of

Manitoba to attend workshops on careers in science and research pertaining to medicine. If

you are interested, see Ms. Labun in Room 18. Those on the wait list who would like to attend,

must meet Ms. Labun in Room 99 on Monday, October 17 at 3:45 pm.

Freshwater Ecology Day at Fort Whyte

“Freshwater Ecology Day is a day to learn about hands-on research and actions that we can

take to protect clean water. Students will leave with a bigger picture of water issues we face in

Manitoba, and become familiar with water-related projects in their community”.

Thursday, September 29th

LIBRARY CLIPPINGS

OCTOBER IS CANADIAN LIBRARY MONTH!

Canada’s libraries make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and in our

communities. They help to inspire Canadians to celebrate our culture, to advance

universal and equitable access to information, to support lifelong learning and to

document and preserve our heritage for

generations to come. In October, the

inspiration created in and by libraries will

be celebrated during Canadian Library

Month.1

With more than 18,000 books (both

fiction and non-fiction), subscriptions to

several periodicals and newspapers, and

an impressive collection of multimedia

items, Kelvin High School’s Library supports the teaching needs of staff and the

curricular needs of an increasingly diverse student population. The Library’s entire

collection, as well as the magazine article database, EBSCOhost, is searchable on line,

providing a local “on-ramp” to the Information Highway. Make a virtual visit to

STUDY STRATEGIES THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Kelvin High School is again offering parents and students

an informative learning session on

study strategies and relieving test anxiety!

When? October 13, 2016: 7:00 – 8:30 PM

Location? Kelvin Theatre

Presented by: Carol Hryniuk-Adamov and Rob Marriott

This dynamic presentation will focus on important principles and strategies to improve

learning, studying, reading comprehension and memory. It will explain ways to work

more effectively, giving practical tips to promote learning at home and tips to prepare

for exams. Ideally, parents and students are encouraged to attend together but people

may attend on their own. For some, the evening will be a "refresher" session, if you

have attended the River Heights School’s sessions. This year we will discuss strategies to

address anxiety. Kelvin’s new Social Worker Rob Marriott will present key strategies to

cope with general and test anxiety.

Carol Hyrniuk-Adamov:

Certified Reading Clinician, Clinical Support Services, Winnipeg School Division

Carol brings decades of classroom and clinical experience and

research knowledge to our school. She is an award-winning

literacy educator (2006 Canada Post Literacy Award). In 2007,

Carol was the first Canadian educator to win the prestigious

International Reading Association's Nila Banton Smith Award for

efforts to translate content reading theory and research into

classroom practice.

Rob Marriott:

Social Worker, Clinical Support Services, Winnipeg School Division

Rob is the new Social Worker assigned to Kelvin. He brings a

wealth of knowledge and experience from the field of social work

and helps us to understand the role of anxiety can play in our

student and family lives. He is raising our awareness of indigenous

perspectives in education, clinical services, and in our school

community.

Plan to attend this practical, strategy-packed evening!

YOUTH IN PHILANTHROPY (YiP)

Want to make a difference in our community? Looking for a school group to join? Consider joining YIP!

ABOUT YiP

YiP is designed to introduce motivated young people, like you, to philanthropy and local

community development. The program will give you hands-on-experience working as a team

and with local charitable organizations. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience.

HOW YiP WORKS

Schools around Winnipeg begin forming their YiP committee in September. Each committee

receives $5,000 from The Winnipeg Foundation to distribute to charities of their choice. As a

committee, we will decide our areas of focus, goals, and criteria. We will then get to visit the

charities in person and interview those involved to see how the money we received can make

the biggest impact. Throughout the year, we will also work on special fundraising projects and

initiatives.

WHY JOIN YiP

Through YiP, you’ll gain skills that will last a lifetime and learn about and network with some

amazing people and organizations doing powerful work to make our community better. Come

meet YiP’s student co-chairs at the Club Fair in the library at lunch. Also, keep your eye out for

Youth in Philanthropy’s posters around the school for meeting times and dates.

***We’d love your creativity, passion and input to make this the best YiP year yet!***

Everyone welcome!

SAFE GRAD

The Class of 2017 will be running a great fundraiser this November by selling assorted Steeped

Tea products. The Steeped Tea fundraising program offers fine loose leaf teas in several tasty

varieties, and three easy to use infusers for steeping. 5 out of 6 North Americans drink tea so

this should be a great fundraiser! Also, the tea will arrive before the winter break so it could

make an awesome holiday gift! Please talk to your favorite graduating Kelvinite to order your

delicious tea! If you don’t know a 2017 grad but want to place an order, please contact Ms.

Temesvari for an order form at [email protected].

WE ARE LOOKING FOR KELVIN PEER TUTORS !

We are looking for any Grade 10, 11 or 12 students who would like to be part of our team. Not only will

you be helping your fellow student, but you will be helping yourself, since your leadership and

networking skills will be honed, and knowledge, cemented. Tutoring also fulfills course requisites,

including CAS hours (I.B.) and Volunteer credit/Community service hours. Furthermore, the experience

gained will serve you very well in the future: employers will see you as a motivated, capable individual,

while universities will look for this type of experience on scholarship applications.

Tutoring can take place when it is convenient for you: during the lunch hour, before or after school, or

during a spare. Support is needed in virtually all subject areas, especially Math and Sciences, and programs

(English track, I.B., and French Immersion).

Applications can be found on the wall by the office door in Room 23, or can be obtained from Mr.

Lacroix. Don't hesitate to apply for this excellent opportunity for personal growth.

Challenge yourself to make a difference here at Kelvin!

WOULD YOU LIKE SOME HELP WITH SCHOOL WORK?

PEER TUTORING MAY BE THE ANSWER FOR YOU!

You will be paired up with another student who will be happy to share their knowledge and

experience in the subject(s) that are a challenge to you. Tutoring can take place at lunch, before

or after school, or possibly during your spare. It can take place on a regular or semi-regular basis

(often 1–3 times per week).

All you need to do is swing by room 23 to pick up and fill out an application.

Seize the day and take charge of your own learning!

CHINA

Spring Break 2017

China 2017 – Beijing and Hong Kong – March 24 to April 2, 2017

Kelvin students will travel to China during Spring Break, 2017 and there is room for

more participants. Asia Pacific Studies teacher, Monsieur Sokalski, along with past

Kelvin Vice-Principal, Joyce Wong, will accompany students on a 10-day trip, departing

Friday, March 24, 2017 and returning Sunday, April 2nd. Students will visit UNESCO

World Heritage sites including Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City (Beijing), and

the Great Wall before flying to Hong Kong and Macau. Kelvin scholars will witness

martial arts displays, visit a public school to meet students and join Chinese families to

make dumplings, among many other excursions and activities. All accommodations, air

& ground travel, along with breakfast and dinner, and admission fees are organized by

EF Tours and are included in the cost per student. Space is available, but limited, for

this once in a lifetime journey with Kelvin. Interested? Contact [email protected] or

[email protected] or visit http://www.eftours.ca/tour-website/1761725vv for more

information.

NEW YORK

May 2017

What could be nicer than Spring in New York? The New York fashion trip in May 2017

is open to students in Grades 9-12. Highlights include the Statue of Liberty, a Broadway

show, Times Square, Madame Tussauds, Fashion Institute, Soho, the beast speedboat

ride, and world famous museums. See Mrs. Strachan in Room 1 for details.

KELVIN ROCKY MOUNTAIN TRIP

JUNE 23 – 30, 2017

CANMORE, ALBERTA

Explore the Rockies! Spend your last week of the school year exploring the mountains around

Canmore, Alberta. We will stay at the Canmore Alpine Club of Canada and day hike some of

the best hikes in the area – Mount Yamnuska, Lady MacDonald, and Ha Ling to name a few.

The trip was established in 1982 by staff members who wanted to

share their experiences of hiking in the mountains. This year’s

Rocky Mountain Trip will leave on June 23 and return on June

30. Staff members include: Ms. Gysel, Ms. Mitt, Monsieur

Charriere, Mr. Fredette, Mr. Dyck, and Ms. DeVos. All staff on the

trip have experience with hiking and outdoor trips. The trip is

open to students in Grades 10 & 11.

The approximate cost of the trip this year will be approximately

$950.00. This cost covers tour bus transportation, group supplies,

lodging, and all student meals once we are in Canmore. Students

will need to pay for their own meals on the way to and from

Canmore. The group will cook its own meals at the facility in

Canmore, and we will hike in the Canmore / Kananaskis area in

Alberta. Trip costs will be finalized once student trip numbers are

confirmed and payments will be spaced out throughout the

school year.

Please check out our Rocky website. Our site can be accessed through Kelvin’s home page. Go

to Athletics and Extracurriculars – School Trips – Rocky Mountain Trip or the QR code below.

If you have questions concerning this trip, please contact me at the school. I can be reached by

email at [email protected] or phone at 474-1492.

Bicycles at the School

Although bike racks are available on school

grounds, parents and students are reminded

that it is the students’ responsibility to provide

their own locks. Please be advised that we

have had a number of incidences where cable

locks have been cut. The school is not

responsible for any thefts. Students who do

bring bikes to school do so at their own risk.

Due to increased concerns with students having

adverse reactions to scented products, Kelvin

High School is taking steps to becoming a scent

free school. We are asking for the support of

students, staff and parents. We are asking all

those attending Kelvin to avoid wearing scented

products such as perfume, men's cologne,

scented hairspray or lotions, strong smelling

soaps, etc. Your support would be greatly

appreciated.

Valuables in the School

Students are being cautioned not to bring

valuables to school (ie: iPod, MP3 players), unless

it is a course requirement (such as a scientific

calculator). Kelvin will not assume responsibility

for any “lost” items.

CLIPPER TIPS

The practice of dropping off and picking up

students in the parking lot before and after

school is quite disruptive to the staff as well as

“an accident waiting to happen.” A number

of accidents have happened over the years.

Please be reminded that the school’s parking

lot is specifically assigned to, and paid for by,

school staff only and therefore, we are

requesting that you refrain from using it as a

drive-thru by making arrangements to drop

off or meet your son/daughter on one of the

surrounding streets.

Kelvin does not have visitor parking

Thank you for your cooperation

School vandalism often involves graffiti,

broken windows, damage to roofs and

playground equipment.

Smoke Free Environment

The Winnipeg School Division Board of Trustees has

adopted the following motion:

“School Division buildings, Division vehicles and

School Division property, shall be smoke free.

Smoking by students, employees of the Division, and

any persons shall be prohibited in Division buildings,

Division-owned vehicles and on school property”

Kelvin High School Code of Conduct

Kelvin High School has adopted a “Clipper Code

of Conduct for Student Athletes”. Kelvin

believes that participating in athletics is a

privilege. Student athletes are ambassadors of

our school. The image presented by our student

athletes will be of a positive nature, enhancing

the reputation of Kelvin inside and outside the

community.

To achieve this the “Code of Conduct” will be a

guide for our student athletes. The code will

reflect personal behavior, attitude, courtesy,

academics, sportsmanship and general

commitment. Student athletes who do not

adhere to these considerations will be referred to

an Athletic Review Committee and appropriate

action will be taken to rectify the situation.

Kelvin has an answering service from 4:30 PM to 8:00 AM. Messages can be left by calling

474-1492 and re-entering the same phone number when prompted.

Messages can be left for any staff member.

The Guidance/Student Office has a direct line during office hours

(8:00 am—4:00 pm). The phone number is 474-1156. Calls to all counselors should be dialed
