Principal’s Comments Attitudes to School Survey The Attitudes to School survey is an annual Department Education and Training (DET) survey for Years 5 and 6 students. It will be conducted in the coming week/s with our students. The survey is designed to provide some insight into students’ perceptions and experience of school. We will also conduct the survey with Year 4 students and create a modified version for the Year 3 students. We use the results from these surveys to inform our program planning and teaching approaches to continually enhance student engagement, connectedness to school, each other and wellbeing. The Year 5 and 6 survey results will be reported back to the school by DET at the end of July. The survey results will be communicated to parents through the 2016 Annual Reporting document which is completed early in 2017.

Prep enrolments 2017 Thank you to families for spreading the word about Karoo Primary as we are hosting many tours for Prep for 2017 and for other classes. Parents are requested to note the high level of interest in enrolment at Karoo Primary School for Prep 2017. An enrolment form for siblings of current students is available now from the school office. Parents are requested to complete the enrolment forms and return them to the school office as early as possible to assist with planning for 2017. Thank you for your assistance with this.

Education Week Monday 16th May to Friday 20th May This year we will be celebrating Education Week with a focus on our eSmart Anti-Bullying program and the use of technology in the classroom. The school will be open on Wednesday 18th May from 9.15am to 10.45am with classes undertaking their ‘normal program’ as an opportunity for parents and friends to observe and join in the learning. In the evening we will open from 5.45pm to 7pm with classrooms open for activities from 5.45 to 6:45pm and musical performances held during the evening. Please join us in celebrating quality education at Karoo.

Tribes Groups On Tuesday we started our first 2016 Tribes Groups with an introduction during lunch eating time. Most students have remained in the same group as last year but we have had to make some changes, so some children were made to feel welcome in their new group and our Prep students were also welcomed! The multi-age groups Prep to Year 6 focus on across the school friendships, respect, tolerance and understanding. It is a very effective forum promoting our school values and a school climate of anti-bullying. Next Monday will be our first TRIBES session.

ANZAC Day Presentation Last Friday our School Captains Aimee and Fletcher made a presentation to the students, followed by laying flowers at our flag pole to commemorate ANZAC Day. Here is the speech given by our captains:

“Anzac Day is one of Australia’s most important national commemorative days. Last year 2015 marked the 100 th anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. Anzac Day falls on the 25th of April each year. The 25th of April was officially named Anzac Day in 1916. ‘ANZAC’ stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.

On the 25th of April 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula. These became known as ANZACS and the pride they took in that name continues to this day. So on the 25th April each year we commemorate soldiers who have been killed in the two World Wars and other areas of service including: Korea, Malayasia, Borneo, Vietnam, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan.

ANZAC s in World War One (WW1) at Gallipoli: In August 1914 Australia and New Zealand joined Great Britain when war was declared on Germany. Very early on the morning of 25th April 1915, the ANZAC soldiers were in boats just off the coast of Turkey. They climbed down rope ladders onto small row boats and rowed close to shore. But as they were making their way off the boats and onto the beach a bright flare went up into the sky and the Turkish army fired machine guns and rifles at them. Many men were killed, injured or drowned. Once ashore, the ANZACs became confused. They were at the base of very high cliffs and not on a flat beach as expected. They had been landed at the wrong place! After eight months of fighting and the ANZACs losing 10,000 men, the troops withdrew from the Gallipoli peninsula defeated.

There are many stories of bravery and battles and many soldiers and other people were killed. On the 25th April each year we remember those who have fought and been killed in wars. I will say the Remembrance Ode:

‘They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.’

Lest we forget. ”

Hawthorn Players talk to Year 6 classes and Hawks fans On Tuesday April 26th, James Sicily and Teia Miles, two Hawthorn FC players visited our school to

deliver a leadership talk to the Year 6 students. The players also agreed to meet students who follow the Hawks, signing jumpers, footballs etc. and answering questions from their fans, during the lunch break. The players were happy to give their time to our students and for such young and relatively inexperienced players they conducted themselves most capably. They gave the students valuable information about life as a football player and how leadership roles are assigned and carried out at a football club.

Auskick fun!

AFL Auskick Clinics enjoyed by Prep-Year 2 classes Last week each year Prep – Year 2 classes experienced Auskick clinics conducted during their PE session.

Development officers Ben and Nathan from the AFL conducted these clinics and Andy, a representative from Eildon Park Football Club, was at a number of sessions to support the Auskick program. Auskick is for both male and female students up to about 8 yrs old to experience the involvement, fun and skills of AFL football without the competitive element of the game. If any parent would like

further information about Auskick and a form so that their child can register for Auskick, please see Mrs Fiona Marker or myself as we have some registration forms.

District Cross Country Reminder Next Friday May 6th is District Cross Country Day and team members are reminded that the permission form and payment need to be returned to school by Monday 2nd May please. Emergencies need not return their payment unless they are required to attend ,but do need to return the permission form.

Chocolate Drive A note will be coming home to all families tomorrow regarding our 2016 Chocolate Drive, which will commence on Friday 13th May. If you do not wish to receive a box of chocolates in this year’s Chocolate Drive please notify the school via the form coming home no later than Thursday 5th May. The option of making a donation in lieu of selling chocolates is also offered. Year 7 Transition forms A reminder to all families of Year 6 students your Year 7 transition form must be completed and returned to the school no later than Friday 13th May, regardless of which school your child is applying to for 2017.

Mother’s Day Stall Wednesday 4th and Thursday 5th May

A display of Mother’s Day goodies is located in the library window for you to see what is available along with prices. Please direct your children to take a look and maybe try some simple maths to budget for the stall. Larger families can also work out who is getting what to avoid double ups. Students will be able to purchase as many items as they like however will need to buy them one at a time before lining up to purchase more. This allows all students a greater selection of products and a good chance they will get their first choice. Each class will be allocated a time on Wednesday 4th May OR Thursday 5th May and left over stock will be available before school on the Friday. Allocated times will go on Tiqbiz closer to the day. Thank you for the responses to helpers for the stall. We are still requiring assistance so if you are available please fill in the reply slip or let me know.

THE ART REPORT

Reporting on Art Projects currently on Display

Today I viewed the artwork by some of the talented students at our school and wish to share with

you some of the interesting and creative pieces of work I looked at.

Year 6 – Circle Artwork

Our Year 6 Art Captains who are Aaron,

Indiana, Lilian and Srofiyah made the Circle Artwork. The artwork is made

from a special coloured material called

resin that is the same as 50 layers of

varnish. The finish is very smooth and

they are very colourful and different.

They are on display in the main administration building next to Mrs

Harding’s office. They are going to be

up for auction later this term. I hope I

can buy one!

Year 3 & 4 – African Bead People

The African Bead People are made from

wire, glass beads and paper magic clay.

The kids threaded the people together

using wire. The African Bead People

look like statues and I was very impressed when I saw them. I think it

would take a long time to make one of

these. They are on display in the Art

Room windows.

Year 2 – Robots

The Year 2’s have all drawn some

fantastic pictures of Robots that looked

out of this world. They used coloured

oil pastels and red and yellow paper. I

think that the kid’s fingers would have been pretty dirty afterwards. They are

on display in the office near Reception.

Year 1 – Marine Aquarium Fish Tanks

The Year 1’s have made awesome fish tanks made from different coloured

paper with fish, seahorses, grass, sand,

joggle eyes, sharks and starfish. I like

the real sea shells used to make the fish

tanks. The kids used real tissue paper

to make it look more interesting and realistic and they really do look like real

aquariums. They are on display in the

hallway in the office near the sick bay.
