1 Newsletter No. 30 - Term 3 Week 10 Thursday 18 th September 2014 From the Assistant Principal………….. Another term has flown by already! Term 3 at Kalinda saw, amongst many other things, an amazing whole school production, a trip to India, a Phillip Island camp, a Prep Zoo excursion, a Level 2 excursion to Edendale Farm, incredible student responses to our CBL topic on Environments, and a wonderful performance morning put on by our string orchestra. Of course the fun continues next term, with our Japan Trip heading off in Week 2, our Year 2 Sleepover, Junior school athletics experience and swimming programs, as well as our usual end of year Christmas Concert and Year 6 Graduation events. There is always something going on at Kalinda, and every event represents another opportunity for our children. As a parent I am very grateful to all the work our teaching staff and parent community do in putting in extra time to make all these wonderful extra-curricular activities possible at our fantastic school. Kalinda leading the way again! Earlier this year a team from the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) came down from Sydney to make a short film to showcase how Kalinda has implemented the Australian Curriculum. Our leadership team was interviewed along with several of our teachers. Kalinda was identified as one of the leading schools in Australia in regards to managing the implantation of this new curriculum. The short film will be showcased on their website for all schools in Australia to look at as an example of best practice. This year we have also trialled a more ongoing and informative method of reporting to parents in our Grade 5/6 area through our system of digital portfolios. This has been part of a whole school review of our reporting process, in line with the changing curriculum and the opportunity provided by more freedom being given to schools in the way they report to parents. I have been asked to fly up to Sydney to help launch the Kalinda film at ACARA, and also to present the new reporting ideas we have been developing to the board and CEO. This is a wonderful opportunity, and shows again that Kalinda is leading the way in Australia for both curriculum development and assessment and reporting processes. So, stay tuned for some new look reporting methods and processes next year! More information to come. ….and again! Kalinda was asked earlier this term if it would consider being a trial school for the new online NAPLAN assessments being developed by ACARA. These were carried out with our Year 3 and 5 students last week. Kalinda has both the wireless infrastructure and number and variety of digital devices to make it the perfect location for a trial like this to take place. The benefit for our school was that our teachers will receive the assessment results from these tests, which will supplement the internal assessments our teachers normally conduct leading up to our end of year reports. They are also able to give feedback on the online testing process, and have first-hand input into shaping the future look of the NAPLAN tests that students from every school in Australia will sit each year.

WORKING BEE

Many thanks to the following families for their assistance during last weekend’s working bee: Lipkevicius, Newton, Puckey and Mann, along with their mini-helpers; James and Baylin. On a beautiful Spring morning, we managed to stay on top of a few ongoing projects as well as to complete a few stand-alone jobs. 'Boxes ticked' included:

soft-fall was re-claimed and re-spread to priority areas (in all playgrounds) sand-pits were rejuvenated, in-ground drains were cleared of debris following recent heavy rains, drinking fountains were repaired and troughs thoroughly cleaned, the retaining structure around the Prep patio continues to grow via the use of reclaimed sleepers from

around the yard, and… the garden beds at the school’s entrance were weeded.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to every family who participates at our working bees, as we simply could not keep our huge grounds looking as pleasant as they are without you. And, as always, we would also like to say a massive thank you to Bryan Bennett and Ted (and Nathan) Dugdale who - along with Steve Harvey - organise the jobs that need doing and (most importantly) make sure the BBQ is ready for hungry workers!

If you are new to the school or have not yet filled out the working bee slip to indicate your date of preference, please do so through the office. Many hands make light work and it’s always a great opportunity to meet other parents and for your children to get together.

THE NEXT WORKING BEE IS ON SUNDAY OCTOBER 19

From 10:00am - 12:00noon. See you there!

and will offer participation opportunities themed around:

1. Ultimate Frisbee, and… 2. Karate / Self Defence.

‘WONNIES SPORTS’ HAS ARRIVED AT KALINDA PRIMARY SCHOOL: Wonnies is a dynamic business that is well known to many Kalinda families. Owned and operated by Scott van Gestel (‘a Kalinda Dad’ and lifelong musician), Wonnies has offered both private and/or group tuition in specialised music activities to Kalinda students for many years. The music tuition program is conveniently conducted on school premises, and during school hours, to provide ‘extension and pathway’ beyond the school’s specialist Performing Arts curriculum. For further information, please grab a Wonnies flyer from the office, or see Ms. Maurus or Scott, himself. But that’s enough about the Wonnies music program!

What many families might not know is that Wonnies now employs over 30 experienced and talented music AND SPORT COACHES who all share Scott’s passion to deliver excellence in music AND SPORT-SPECIFIC tuition. To introduce the Wonnies Sports model to Kalinda P.S., 20 (only) Grade 3 and 4 students have the chance to enrol in Kalinda’s first-ever FREE ‘Wonnies Soccer Academy’. Lessons will include both clinical and match-play components, and will be held every Friday throughout Term 4 at lunchtime on the school oval. It’ll be like a ‘club-land’ experience to provide ‘extension and pathway’ beyond the school’s specialist Physical Education curriculum (without needing to find a club - or time to spend at a club – …just yet)!

These 20 places will NOT last long, and it’ll be a case of first-in, first-placed. So to enrol, please e-mail Mr. Harvey on [email protected] for an enrolment form NOW!

13 – 17 OCTOBER (TERM 4, WEEK 2) IS HEALTH & PE WEEK: As a Health and

Physical Education teacher, I am (obviously) a huge advocate for the importance of

physical activity in the lives of children (and their families). The following article came

across my desk recently, and I thought I would share with you the opportunity to access it.

Click here to find out five compelling reasons why we need lots of physical activity in and around our schools,

worldwide.

OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program Week 10 - Term 3 – 2014 (15th September -19th September)

Program Update

Hi everyone, and welcome to the final week of Term 3. We have spent the past week trying to outdo each other with little riddles. Seeing who can see the hidden messages in the riddles to solve them. All the children were actively discussing and trying to guess the answers. We also wrote letters to the Queen. The children asked how she was, and wrote about what they were doing, and what they wanted to have happen in the future. A reminder to all parents and the wider school community that we have a “Suggestion Tree” which you are more than welcome to pin ideas for programming or healthy menu items onto. The more suggestions we have the better tailored the program will be to your community expectations. And lastly, HOLIDAY PROGRAMS will now operate from Great Ryrie Primary and Ringwood Heights Primary. Please feel free to visit https://www.oshclub.com.au/oshclub/holiday.html and view the program brochure of your preferred service. Bookings are open now. Excursions on offer these holidays are “Melbourne Zoo” and “St Kilda Childrens Theatre”. So rest assured that these holidays are jam packed with fun and exciting things for your children to do. Many Thanks Jeffrey Michaels-Woo
